Dynamic data source in Excel Pivot Table

Hello there,
I am trying to have dynamic data source in pivot table using INDIRECT but getting the error "Reference not valid". Here is how I setup the reference:
Named range: ConsolLink = "'R:\Root\Sub1\Sub2\Consol File.xlsm'!Source_OpexConsol"
"Source_OpexConsol" is defined in the source file as a dynamic name using offset formula.
In the pivot data source, I have tried "=INDIRECT(ConsolLink)" as the data source but that does not work.
I have also tried using INDIRECT in ConsolLink and just referencing "ConsolLink" as the data source. That does not work either.
I am not using Power Pivot. Appreciate it if someone can help.
Thanks.

If it is open, then try
Named range: ConsolLink = Range("Consol File.xlsm'!Source_OpexConsol")
And if it is not currently open, then try
Dim W As Workbook
Set W = Workbooks.Open("R:\Root\Sub1\Sub2\Consol
File.xlsm")
Named range: ConsolLink =
Range("Consol File.xlsm'!Source_OpexConsol")
W.Close False

  • Data Source path in Pivot Table changes to absolute on its own

    Hello.
    I have a .XLSX file, that was created long time ago (I don't even know in which Office version, but definitely not 2013), and maybe even was a .XLS file at first.
    So it's a 4 MB file with 16 Sheets and 8 Pivot Tables.
    All of the Pivot Tables use other sheets from the same file as Data Source.
    Data Source for some of them look like this: 'Sheet3'!$A:$E
    Everything is fine when I save the file, and open it from saved file.
    But as soon as I try to move the file elsewhere, or rename it, or email it - all Data Source paths change to something like this: '\Users\Sergii_Litnevskyi\Desktop\New folder\[FileName.xlsx]Sheet3'!$A:$E
    And it happens with all Pivot Tables. The problem is that it links to an old file path, where the file does not exist anymore. And it links to an external file, which is not what I want.
    If I Save As and select different path and filename - then it works fine. So it's a workaround for renaming and moving files, but not for sending them to other persons.
    I've read some threads, and people recommend disabling "Save external link values", but it does not help. It is already turned off in my office, but it keeps acting weird.
    So what I need is: Save the file, close it, rename it, move it to other place, send it over email as attachment. And then I want to have the same Data Source path in my PivotTables as I had before I saved the file. How can I do it?
    My Office version: Microsoft Excel 2013 (15.0.4454.1503) MSO (15.0.4517.1005) 32-bit

    Hi,
    According to your description, I suppose the issue may be caused by some reason.
    Do you link the outside data source?
    I think if the file moves the file elsewhere, or renames, or email,
    data source paths can’t be change.
    But, your data source paths add the absolute path.
    Do you link the outside data source?
    I recommend you zip the file and send it as Email attachment.
    If the issue exists, you may save as it in a new name and test it in another computer.

    I am pretty sure that I don't have any external links in the document.
    However, even if I did - why would it change Data Source path for all of the Pivot Tables, when I did not request it?
    I tried zipping it and sending to other person over email, but he got the file with changed data source paths.
    I can even record a short video to show what happens.
    Actually, I just did it. You can see the video here: http://screencast.com/t/qMBild3ck9b
    It is rather big - 23.8 MB.
    Let me explain what I showed there:
    I opened my original file. I showed that there are Pivot Tables, whose Data Sources are in the same file, on various other sheets.
    I showed this for all of the Pivot Tables in the document.
    I saved the file using Save As in a different folder and under a different name (TEST.xlsx).
    I then opened that saved file to show you that it is fine, and the Data Source path for one of the Pivot Tables is the same as it was in original file. It is the same for all of the other Pivot Tables.
    Then I closed, and simply renamed the file to TEST123.xlsx.
    Opened it, and first thing wrong - Security warning.
    Then I got ‘Cannot open PivotTable source file ….’ messages. And, as I showed, now all Data Source paths have been changed to full paths of the file, that was created by Save As (TEST.xlsx) from original file.

  • Excel Pivot Table with Date Hierarchies - query performance degradation

    For the sake of this explanation, I’m going to try and keep it simple. Slicing the data by additional dimensions only makes the issue worse. I’ll keep this description to one fact table and three dimensions. Also, I’m fairly new to SSAS Tabular; I’ve worked
    with SSAS Multidimensional in the past.
    We’ve got a fact table that keeps track of bill pay payments made over time. Currently, we only have about six months of data, with the fact row count at just under 900,000 rows. The grain is daily.
    There is an Account dimension (approx. 460,000 rows), with details about the individual making a payment.
    There is a Payment Category dimension (approx.. 35,000 rows), which essentially groups various Payees into groups which we like to report on: Automobile Loan, Mortgage, Insurance, etc.
    There is the requisite Date dimension  (exactly 62093 rows-more days than we need?), which allows visibility as to what is being paid when.
    Using this DW model, I’ve created a SSAS BISM Tabular model, from which Excel 2010 is ultimately used to perform some analysis, using Pivot Tables. In the tabular model, for easier navigation (doing what I’ve always done in SSAS MultiDimensional), I’ve created
    several Date Hierarchies, Year-Month, Year-Quarter-Month, etc.
    There are currently only two measures defined in the Tabular model: one for the “Sum of PaymentAmount”; one for the “PaymentsProcessed”.
    OK, in Excel 2010, using a Pivot Table, drag the “Sum of PaymentAmount” measure to the Values section, next to/under the PivotTable Field List. Not too exciting, just the grand total of all Payments, for all time.
    Drag the “YearMonth” hierarchy (from the Date dimension) to the “Column Labels” section. After expanding the year hierarchy to see the months, now the totals are for each of the months, for which we have data, for June through November, 2013.
    Drag the “PaymentCategory” (from the Payment Categories dimension) to the “Report Filter” section. Filter accordingly: We just want to see the monthly totals for “Automobile Loans”.
    Now, some details. Drag the “AccountSK” (hiding the actual account numbers) to the “Row Labels” section. This shows all accounts that have made Automobile Loan payments over the last six months, showing the actual payment amounts.
    So far, so good. Remember, I’m using a Date Hierarchy here, in this case “YearMonth”
    Now, if any of the other attributes on the Account dimension table, say “CreditScore”, or “LongName”, are subsequently dragged over to the “Row Lables” section, under the “AccountSK”, the results will never come back, before timing out or by giving up and
    pressing ESCape!
    If this exact scenario is done by removing the Date Hierarchy, “YearMonth” from the “Column Labels” and replace it with “Year” and “MonthName” attributes from the Date dimension, these fields not being in any sort of hierarchy, adding an additional “Account”
    attribute does not cause any substantial delay.
    What I’m trying to find out is why is this happening? Is there anything I can do as a work around, other than what I’ve done by not using a Date Hierarchy? Is this a known issue with DAX and the query conversion to MDX? Something else?
    I’ve done a SQL Profiler trace, but I’m not sure at this point what it all means. In the MDX query there is a CrossJoin involved. There are also numerous VertiPaq Scans which seems to be going through each and every AccountSK in the Account dimension, not
    just the ones filtered, to get an additional attribute (About 3,600 accounts which are “Automobile Loan” payments.).
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks! Happy Holidays!
    AAO

    Thanks for your reply Marco. I've been reading your book, too, getting into Tabular.
    I've set up the Excel Pivot Table using either the Year/MonthName levels, or the YearMonth hierarchy and then adding the additional attribute for the CreditScore.
    Incidentally, when using the YearMonth hierarchy and adding the CreditScore, all is well, if the Year has not been "opened". When this is done, I suspect the same thing is going on.
    From SQL Profiler, each of the individual MDX queries below (formatted a bit for readability).
    Thanks!
    // MDX query using separate Year and MonthName levels, NO hierarchy.

  • Using an Excel file as a dynamic data source? Opinions needed...

    I have posted this topic before, but as always; in order to get the relevant correct answer you have to ask the correct question.
    I'm trying to create a number of Pricelists linked to an Excel/CSV file. I have a Excel file that contains Pricelist information which is Product specific.
    I have had a number of suggestion that follow:
    A direct link to the Excel file. PROs: Excel file can be uploaded on FTP and overwritten if (and when) amended. Linking this is easy peasy in Dreamweaver. Person browsing can download info straight away on request - no hassle. CONs: Simply, not everyone has Excel and those who don't can not access the information.
    Import Excel file as tabular data. PROs: Fairly easy to do in Dreamweaver. Person browsing can see info straight away. CONs: Can be time consuming on larger Excel files. NOT amendable (so a number of price changes becomes a big job). Can't simply overwrite Excel file on FTP. Larger Excel files can take a lot of page space and thus require tonnes of scrolling).
    Use the Excel file as a dynamic data source. --Not entirely sure how I would go about doing this (any suggestions/links/tutorials etc)-- PROs: ? CONs: Contributor added this suggestion is not a good idea as it performs poorly on the web.
    Create a dynamic page using a database and import the Excel file to that....or maintain the price list in the database rather than an Excel file. --Again not entirely sure how I would go about doing this (any suggestions/links/tutorials etc)-- My understanding of this option is that it will require XML data and SPRY work. Is this correct? Can this be someone who is not an advanced user?
    If once again, I'm off the mark and better suggestions can be thought - please do so.
    As you can see I'm at a bit of a crossroads so an suggestions, comment, help, links, tutorials or applause would be greatly received.
    Thanks in advance and looking forward to seeing the comments this throws up!

    Hi
    Although not everyone has excel just about everyone can open csv files in some way, if not offer the option to download "open office" which is free for the pc, as for the mac they have a program installed by default to use csv files.
    The import tabular data is not really an option for the reasons stated.
    Use excel as data source - not a good idea, requires asp.net to work correctly otherwise it does run slow and is not recommended if you are expecting more than a very small number of users.
    As for the dynamic with database, this can be done with xml and spry but if you have a large amount of data this is almost as bad as the option above. You are probably better creating a database and importing your excel spreadsheet into this, for tutorials on creating a php/mysql database and set-up of testing server see - http://www.adobe.com/devnet/dreamweaver/application_development.html.
    No matter which way you go with the last option it will require a fair amount of knowledge and experience to do correctly, efficiently and securely.

  • Using external parameters within MS Query returning that data right into a pivot table Excel 2010

    In Excel 2010 i was able to use the external parameters within MS Query returning that data right into a pivot table.  But the parameter on the worksheet will not save in the paremeter setting of the data connection.  And if you save it and open
    it and try to refresh the pivot table Excel stops responding and you have to force the file closed.  I found out the reason to crash is that it did not keep the parameter saved.
    Can this be fixed?

  • Excel Pivot Table not working Office 2013 click to run

    Hi
    I have a user who is having an issue with Excel pivot tables.
    Issue occurs when opening an old excel-file (created with Office 2007) and then saving it with another name (Save As).
    When opened the next time, system gives attached error message when trying to update Pivot with "Alt + F5" command.
    --> For some reason it wants to find something from that old excel file + Pivot is not updated.
    Can anyone help?
    Thanks
    Dan Smith

    Thank you George for your reply. The user tried the Analyze-->Change Data Source and this is what was found:
    The original file name was ”Kaiken_syyskuu2014_2.xlsx”. (see the pic below)
    When I have saved it as “Kaken_marraskuu2014”, it seems that all the pivots are still linked to “Kaiken_syyskuu2014_2”??
    In earlier Office version this did not happen.
    This excel file must be updated on monthly basis. There is tens of different pivots, so It would be quite nightmare to update the names for every Data Source one by one, every month (actually it is not possible to type name for the data
    source, ranges/tables have to be selected manually).
    These pivots are not re-created every month. Only the data source gets updated by pressing (Alt + F5)
    This problems is solved if the pivot table data source gets updated also (=source is same than new file name) when you give new name for the file (=Save as).
    I don’t see the point why pivots are still linked to old file, if you have already gave new file name for the entire excel-file.
    I hope you can help.
    Thanks

  • Creation of a generic extractor and data source for the FAGLFLEXA table

    Hi All,
    Need to create a generic extractor and data source for the FAGLFLEXA table to support AR reporting. This table contains the necessary profit center information to perform LOB reporting against the AR data.
    Please advice on how to do this.
    Regards, Vishal

    Hi Vishal,
    Its seems a simple a work out.
    1.Go to RSO2 & choose the relevant option ie. whether you want to create Transactional DS, Master Data DS or Text DS.
    2. Name it accordingly & then create.
    3. Give description to it & then give table name FAGLFLEXA.
    4. Save it & activate. If you need it to be delta enabled then click over Delta & you can choose accordingly.
    If you still face some problem then do mail me at [email protected]

  • Can we set the dynamic data source when using getReportParameters() ?

    Hello!
    I have a report where one of its parameters refers to a list of values (LOVs). This list of values is an SQL Query type. When the data source used in the report is defined in the BI Publisher server, I'm able to get the report parameters using the getReportParameters() function in my application. However, if the data source is not defined the function throws an exception, which is understandable.
    I decided to dynamically set the data source so that even if the data source used by the report is not defined in the BI Publisher server, it still will be able to get the LOVs for the parameter. I tried setting the JDBCDataSource of the dynamicDataSource for the ReportRequest object that I passed to the getReportParameters() function. Please see the sample code below:
    reportRequest.dynamicDataSource = new BIP10.BIPDataSource();
    reportRequest.dynamicDataSource.JDBCDataSource = new BIP10.JDBCDataSource();
    setReportDataSource(reportRequest.dynamicDataSource.JDBCDataSource, connectstr, jdbc, dc); //function to set the values for JDBCDataSource object
    reportParams = webrs.getReportParameters(reportRequest, uid, pwd); //call the getReportParameters
    I was expecting this to work as this is what I did to dynamically set the data source before calling the runReport function. So, my question is -- can we set the dynamic data source when using getReportParameters() ? I tried this both in versions 10g and 11g. It does not seem to work on both versions.
    Regards,
    Stephanie

    report_id column of apex_application_page_ir_rpt can help us uniquely identify each saved report.
    We can assign this report_id value to a page item and this page item can be put in the Report ID Item text box of the Advanced section of the Report Attributes page of the IR.
    This should load the saved report identified by report_id and you can get rid of javascript

  • About  how to export excel pivot tables

    Hello all!
    I am currently working with the "help" of an oracle consultor from Oracle (Consulting) Spain, but she (and no one of her working mates) is not able to give me an answer about my doubt.
    The problem is: I know that Oracle Discoverer plus is able to export oracle Olap crosstabs automatically to excel pivot tables. It must do it in some way, but no one, here in Spain, is able to tell me how.
    I suppose Oracle engineers have developed a Java Api to do it, but , in Spain, it is useless trying to get this information from Oracle (an this is not because this is a "top secret information" , this is just because they do not know their products, just it!).
    The only help that I had from them regarding this issue was a reference to Jexcelapi. I do not want to reinvent the wheel, thus why I am trying to get any help from you. Please, you are my last chance!
    Does any body know how discoverer exports Oracle Olap crosstabs to excel pivot tables?
    Than you very much for your help in advance.
    Best regards,
    Miguel A. Vico.

    Hello again!
    Yes , you are right, but that is not my problem; my problem is that I need to do what Discoverer does, but using Oracle BI beans technology. An this technology gives me no chance to do it .
    BI beans exports to CSV and Excel format , but not to excel pivot tables, and I would need to do it .
    Could you tell me what is the API, Discoverer uses to get this job done?
    Best regards,
    Miguel

  • When to call DSDisposeHandle when you have a DLL function acting as a repeating DS dynamic data source?

    Hi
    I have a DLL function acting as a dynamic data source within a LabVIEW application (see attachment) - I am using DSNewHandle to dynamically allocate 2D array handle storage via the LV memory manager for the arbitrary size data arrays to be passed into the application. I had assumed that these memory blocks would (magically) be disposed when appropriate by the LabVIEW built in processing blocks that sit downstream, however this is not the case and the LabVIEW system memory usage keeps increasing until LabVIEW environment is exited (not simply if just the offending application is stopped or closed).
    So my question is how and where to mop up the used up array buffers in the application processing chain and how do I know when the buffers are actually exhausted and not being reused downstream (for instance the two 2D arrays are first combined into a complex 2D array by the re+im to complex labview operator - is the data memory out of this stage totally different from the inputs or is it some modified version of the input arrays - if totally different and the input 2D arrays are not wired into any other blocks why does the operator not dispose the input data stores?)
    Perhaps Im going about this the wrong way having the DLL data source dynamically allocate the data space arrays? Any advice would be gratefully received
    Regards
    Steve

    Then instead of doing:
    DLLEXPORT int32_t DataGetFloatDll(... , Array2DFloat ***p_samples_2d_i, ...)
    if ( p_samples_2d_i )
    // *p_samples_2d_i can be non NULL, because of performance optimization where LabVIEW will pass in the same handle
    // that you returned in a previous call from this function, unless some other LabVIEW diagram took ownership of the handle.
    // Your C code can't really take ownership of the handle, it owns the handle for the duration of the function call and either
    // has to pass it back or deallocate it (and if you deallocate it you better NULL out the handle before returning from the
    // function or return a different newly allocated handle. A NULL handle for an array is valid and treated as empty array.
    *p_samples_2d_i = (Array2DFloat **) DSNewHandle( ( sizeof(int32_t) * 2 ) + ( sizeof(float) * channel_count * sample_count ) );
    // Generally you should first try to insert the data into the array before adjusting the size
    // the most safe would be to adjust the size after filling in the data if the array gets bigger in respect to the passed in array
    // and do the opposite if the adjusted handle happened to get smaller. This is only really important though if your C code can
    // bail out of the code path because of error conditions between adjusting the handle size and adjusting the array sizes.
    // You should definitely avoid to return from this function with the array dimensions indicating a bigger size than what the
    // handle really is allocated for, which can happen if the array was resized to a smaller size and you then return because of errors
    // before adjusting the dimension sizes in the array.
    (**p_samples_2d_i)->Rows = channel_count;
    (**p_samples_2d_i)->Columns = sample_count;
     you should be doing:
    DLLEXPORT int32_t DataGetFloatDll(... , Array2DFloat ***p_samples_2d_i, ...)
    MgErr err = NumericArrayResize(fS /* array of singles */, 2 /* number of dims */, (UHandle*)p_samples_2d_i, channel_count * sample_count);
    if (!err)
    // Fill in the data somehow
    // Adjust the dimension sizes
    (**p_samples_2d_i)->Rows = channel_count;
    (**p_samples_2d_i)->Columns = sample_count;
