Dynamically register "mouse move" event for a VI

Just as in the example ”Dynamically Register for Events.vi” I want to dynamically register a “Mouse Move” event. I use the “Open VI Reference” to get the reference to the VI and I connect it to the “Register For Events” block just as in the example. When I click the block I get a list of events to choose from, but the “mouse move” event is not one of them. How do I select this event?
I have got the program running by copying the “Register For Events” block from the example and into my program, but I’m interested to know how this should have been done.
I use LabView 8.0

I've had the same problem in LV 8.2.1 and 8.5. I found that NI changed how to access the mouse move... it's now available under "Pane." See my attached example, a modified NI Example.

  • Image control mouse move event updates

    I would like to drag the ROI around in the Image control (holding down the left mouse button) and continually read out the ROI coordinates. I can't find a way to do this: the mouse move event does not seem to fire if I hold the left mouse button down. I assumed that I would have
    1. Mouse down when I click and hold.
    2. Mouse move when I move the ROI around.
    3. Mouse up when I release the left mouse button.
    This does not seem to be the case.
    I've done a simple workaround which is
    1. Use the key up event to check that the space bar has been pressed.
    2. Use this to toggle a "lock" boolean which locks the target to the mouse coordinates.
    3. Use the mouse move event to return the Image Control Mouse Coordinates property.
    4. Unlcok the target from the mouse coordinates by pressing the space bar again.
    This kind of works, but it is much less intuitive than the standard windows "click and drag".
    Any comments appreciated.
    Thanks.
    PS The Image Control is excellent, it has saved me lots of development time. Also, the ROI tools are hugely useful.

    If you filter the mouse down event (MOUSE DOWN?) then the coordinated are always returned on mouse move event weather the mouse is down or not.  I did get the coordinates when the left button was down anyway it was just when the right button was down which the move event was not handled (due to the popup menu consuming the event first?)  I thing there is a good way to do this with dynamic event registration, and NI has a similar example of drag and drop of controls, but I am not at my LV machine to look for it right now.  If I am wrong I am sorry it is early and my coffee is not brewed yet.

  • Detect clicked cluster in mouse down event for clusters within multiple stacked clusters

    With the help of Ben (see http://forums.ni.com/t5/LabVIEW/Determine-cluster-element-clicked-in-mouse-down-event/td-p/1245770)
    I could easily find out what sub-cluster had been clicked on (mouse down event) within the main cluster, by using the Label.Text Property.
    However if you have a cluster within a cluster within a cluster then you probably have to use individual mouse down events for each sub-sub cluster.
    I just wanted to use one "Main Cluster":Mouse Down event and from that determine which of the sub-sub clusters had been clicked on - is this even remotely possible?

    Yes but... you will have to pass through 26 Kudos worth of Nuggets to get there (Well maybe you can skip the last 5 or so).
    This Nugget by Ton teaches us how to use Dynamic Event Registration. (15 Kudos, must read and understand)
    This Nugget by me talks about getting at references inside arbitrary data structures. (11 Kudos, You don't have to read the whole thing, only enough to get at nested objects).
    SO use the stuff I wrote about to gather up the references to the clusters. Build them into an array and then use dynamic event registration and what you learned in that thread you linked in your question.
    So Possible? Yes!
    Easy? YOU tell me.

  • Mimicking mouse move event

    Hi,
    I'm using flex through a plugin, and not though a browser (like most people do). For some strange reason my flex SWF doesn't receives mouse move events. I can get the mouse move events in the application that contains the SWF, and I can tell the SWF that the events has occured, using the externalInterface API.
    Once I received a call that indicates a new mouse position, I want to mimick it as a normal mouse move event. Any ideas on a simple way to do this?
    thanks in advance,
    Vince

    If you have the stage coordinates of the mouse, you can get pretty far by calling getObjectsUnderPoint and dispatching a MouseEvent from the last element in the array (converting the stage coordinates to local).

  • XY graph "mouse move" event stops generating when click on cursor

    Hello All
    When the mouse is moving freelly inside the XY graph control, the "mouse movement" event is fired.
    The same happens when muse clicks anywhere in the graph with the exception of cursors.
    hen mouse clicks on cursors the "mouse move" event is NOT generated even though the mouse is phisically moved.
    Is there any explanation to this.
    I enclose the example.
    regards
    Pawel

    Just today I had the same problem -> my solution:
    set event timeOut to some value(I have it at 1ms) then
    add to globalVariables some BOOL variable that will signal if mouse is down or up (set the flag in appropriate event),
    then add a case in the timeOut event which will read this
    global variable(flag) -> if it's TRUE then change the needed parameter.
    So even if the mouse move event isn't fired the main timeout event is.
    Not a perfect solution, but better than nothing.
    Peace

  • Mouse over event for every word inside a text?

    I want to do a separate mouse over event for every word inside a text.
    or at least get the string below the mouse cursor.
    any hint?
    henry

    There are no events for it but you can use TextField.getCharIndexAtPoint() to determine the character where the mouse is over, and from there you can work out the word where the mouse is over.

  • How to execute a method on mouse move event on an Image

    Hi All,
    I want to execute a method on mouse move event or mouse click event to an image.
    how can i achieve this?
    TIA,
    Vishal

    I am not sure if commandImageLink or goImageLink solve your requirement.
    But as a workaround you can use set of ClientListener and ServerListener with af:image to achieve what you need.
    using then you can capture client event and convert that into server event which you can use to call a bean method.
    Inside this bean you can call a web service or method binding.
    My first link in previous post shows that very well....

  • Mouse move event when mouse out of stage.

    Hi
      I'm wondering how is this task done that listen to mouse move event when user cursor is out of stage?

    Hi, kennethkawamoto2
        I've tried in this way: use "stage.mouseX, stage.mouseY" these two values when cursor is out of stage, and it worked quite well till now,
    If you mind discribe the issue that you've metion that " Flash does not report mouse location correctly beyond stage.." more in detail, I think I should avoid this. Thank you very much!

  • Problems with Mouse Down event for a picture control embedded in tab.

    I noticed that when trying to get a Mouse Down event for a picture control that the Mouse Down will not be 'fired' if the picture is embedded in a tab control. It also appears that this problem exists for other controls (I only tested a slider in addition to the picture). It isn't much of an issue for me now as I can just poll the mouse property of the picture control, but the Mouse Down event has information that I may want access to in my next software revision (button pressed, and Alt mod). I could do that by handling the Mouse Down event for the tab itself and checking to see if the the mouse property isn't -1, -1 for the picture, but that seems a little bit too kludgy (sp?) to me and wouldn
    't address the issue with other control types. Any chance of this being addressed by a patch sometime in the next couple of months???

    The problem I reported above was in LV 6.1.
    As a work-around, I used the mouse down on the tab control and did the math to decide if the picture was clicked.
    I have been told that this was fixed in LV 7.0. I can not confirm.
    You could call NI and ask about the service request number I cited above.
    I hope this helps,

  • What is the recommended way to handle mouse click events for custom nodes that subclass Panes?

    Hi,
    I have created a custom node that is a StackPane containing a Label on top of a Polygon.
    import javafx.scene.control.Label;
    import javafx.scene.layout.StackPane;
    import javafx.scene.paint.Color;
    import javafx.scene.shape.Polygon;
    public class CustomHexagon extends StackPane {
        private Polygon hexagon;
        private Label overlayText;
        public CustomHexagon( String text, double... points ) {
            this.hexagon = new Polygon( points );
            this.overlayText = new Label( text );
            overlayText.setStyle( "-fx-font-weight: bold;" );
            hexagon.setStroke( Color.GREEN );
            hexagon.setStrokeWidth( 5.0 );
            hexagon.setFill( Color.WHITE );
            this.getChildren().addAll( hexagon, overlayText );
    // Lays out the node where it should be according to the points provided for the Polygon.
            this.setLayoutX( points[0] - getLayoutBounds().getMinX() );
            this.setLayoutY( points[1] - getLayoutBounds().getMinY() );
    // Show the border of the StackPane.
            this.setStyle( "-fx-border-color: black; -fx-border-width: 1; -fx-border-style: dashed;");
        public String getOverlayText() {
            return overlayText.getText();
    I want to display a tesselation of these custom hexagons. Because a CustomHexagon is a StackPane, not a Polygon, MouseClick events can be picked up when the mouse is clicked outside of the stroke of the hexagon but still within the StackPane (which takes up a rectangle larger than the hexagon). The following program demonstrates this.
    public class Main extends Application {
        @Override
        public void start(Stage primaryStage) {

    After running this program, when one clicks within the intersection of two StackPanes (borders shown by dashed lines), the target of the mouse click event will be the StackPane on top as determined by the order in which they were added to their parent.
    This is a problem because there is only a small "T" shaped area within each hexagon that when clicked will target that hexagon with an event, rather than adjacent nodes.
    I would appreciate any reccomendations to solve this problem.
    Thanks,
    James Giller

    Hello, this is an evergreen. Just call setPickOnBounds(false) on the CustomHexagon.

    First change the name from kPlusIconPNGIconRsrcID to kPlusIconPNGIconIRsrcID
    so "I" will indicate that your icon is inactive
    Create another resource id like:
    #define kPlusIconPNGIconIRsrcID 15
    #define kPlusIconPNGIconARsrcID 15
    Define paths to the icons
    resource PNGA(kPlusIconPNGIconIRsrcID) "../res/icons/PLUS_ICO_23_I.png" // Inactive icon
    resource PNGR(kPlusIconPNGIconARsrcID) "../res/icons/PLUS_ICO_23_A.png" // Active icon

  • Mouse released event for scrollbar

    Hello,
    I have a java.awt.Scrollbar component on applet.
    I need to perform actions when user releases the mouse from the
    scrollbar. For example the user presses the mouse on the scrollbars
    tracking rectangle and starts to track. Then the values of the
    scrollbar changes and finally user releases the mouse left button-
    this final event (mouse release) is in my interest. How can i get
    mouse release event from scrollbar? The AdjustmentListener does not
    suit for me because it fires AdjustmentEvents even then when the user
    hasn't released the mouse. I need to perform more actions for every
    scrollbar's change; so my applet i slow at the moment, because every
    "tracking in scrollbar" creates a lot of events before the mouse is
    finally released.
    I added a MouseListener for my scrollbar, but mouseReleased event does
    not work. Can yo help me?
    Thank you, any help would be nice.
    Here is some demo code i tried:
    import java.applet.Applet;
    import java.awt.*;
    import java.awt.event.*;
    public class Kerimisriba1 extends Applet implements
    AdjustmentListener, MouseListener{
         Scrollbar kerimisriba=new Scrollbar(Scrollbar.VERTICAL, 20, 5, 1,
    100); //algvrtus, nupu suurus, vhim ja suurim vrtus
         TextField tf=new TextField(10);
         public Kerimisriba1(){
              setLayout(new BorderLayout());
              add(kerimisriba, BorderLayout.WEST);
              add(tf, BorderLayout.SOUTH);
              //kerimisriba.addAdjustmentListener(this);
              kerimisriba.addMouseListener(this);
              System.out.println("AdjustmentEvent.TRACK="+AdjustmentEvent.TRACK);
         public void adjustmentValueChanged(AdjustmentEvent e){
              //System.out.println(e.getAdjustmentType());
              // tf.setText(kerimisriba.getValue()+"");
         public void mouseReleased(MouseEvent me){
              tf.setText("mouseReleased");
         public void mouseClicked(MouseEvent me){}
         public void mouseEntered(MouseEvent me){}
         public void mouseExited(MouseEvent me){}
         public void mousePressed(MouseEvent me){}
    }

    I made a screenshot of how the applet works in my computer:
    http://charles.pri.ee/scroll.gif
    As you see in the java console,
    the statement System.out.println("mouseReleased");
    does not executes,
    in my computer.
    I tried this on co-workers comuter with Internet Explorer- there was no mouse release event either.
    I hope i'm not very annoying, but i still need help:)
    I replaced the constructor with init() method:
    import java.applet.Applet;
    import java.awt.*;
    import java.awt.event.*;
    public class Kerimisriba1 extends Applet implements AdjustmentListener, MouseListener{
         Scrollbar kerimisriba=new Scrollbar(Scrollbar.VERTICAL, 20, 5, 1, 100); //algvrtus, nupu suurus, vhim ja suurim vrtus
         TextField tf=new TextField(10);
         public void init(){
              kerimisriba.addAdjustmentListener(this);
              setLayout(new BorderLayout());
              kerimisriba.addMouseListener(this);
              add(kerimisriba, BorderLayout.WEST);
              add(tf, BorderLayout.SOUTH);
              System.out.println("AdjustmentEvent.TRACK="+AdjustmentEvent.TRACK);
         public void adjustmentValueChanged(AdjustmentEvent e){
              System.out.println(e.getAdjustmentType());
              tf.setText(kerimisriba.getValue()+"");
         public void mouseReleased(MouseEvent me){
              tf.setText("mouseReleased");
              System.out.println("mouseReleased");
         public void mouseClicked(MouseEvent me){
              System.out.println("mouseClicked");
         public void mouseEntered(MouseEvent me){}
         public void mouseExited(MouseEvent me){}
         public void mousePressed(MouseEvent me){
              System.out.println("mousePressed");

  • BUG mouse move event on stage in fullscreen

    Hi everybody,
    I have a video player witch can use fullscreen mod, when user click on fullscreen button, player switch in this mod, so, when user move his mouse on stage, playerControls appear.
    My problem :
    on Windows : in enterFullscreen event handler, i listen MOUSE_MOVE event on stage, the problem is that the MOUSE_MOVE is fire, even if the user doesn't move mouse, mouse coordinate change, yes, but i think mouse_move event should be not fire...
    the problem not appear on Mac.
    Sorry for my bad english.
    stage.addEventListener(FullScreenEvent.FULL_SCREEN, onEnterFullscreen);
    public function onEnterFullscreen(e:FullScreenEvent):void {
         stage.addEventListener(MouseEvent.MOUSE_MOVE,moveHandler);

  • Dynamically register event mouse move

    I try to understand dynamically register for events.
    In this NI example of "Dynamically register for events.vi",  the first register events (outside the while loop), if I change the top item "mouse move" to something else, I cannot select "mouse move" event anymore, in the pull down arrow, there is not a "mouse move" as a selectable item.
    Can anybody explain this?  I have to close VI without saving.
    When I make change to the event, in the event structure, there will be a case "unknown event" displayed.
    My other question is: how does the program knows the difference between mouse outside the picture control?
    I know that when I press the mouse button down on the picture then the iteration starts to count,  I just don't understand how the program knows the difference, it is not obvious to me.
    regards

    You should try working with standard events before using dynamic events.
    As for your questions:
    The dynamic events available in the event structure are determined by the dynamic event terminal (inside the right red square in the image below). When you change the Mouse Move event, it is no longer available and you have to configure the event structure to use another event.
    The Mouse Up and Mouse Down? events are registered for all the controls (left red square), so clicking on any control would generate those events.
    There should be a tutorial on this site about using dynamic events. You can use the search engine to find it. Also, reading the LabVIEW help on this is a good idea.
    To learn more about LabVIEW, I suggest you try searching this site and google for LabVIEW tutorials. Here, here, here, here and here are a few you can start with and here are some tutorial videos. You can also contact your local NI office and join one of their courses.
    In addition, I suggest you read the LabVIEW style guide and the LabVIEW user manual (Help>>Search the LabVIEW Bookshelf).
    Try to take over the world!

  • Register mouse events

    Hello,
    I just wanted to ask if there is an easy way to obtain mouse events (such as mouse down, scroll wheel etc.) within an event structure (as it is possible with the keyboard). Now I'm using a while loop to continuously acquire the mouse state. It would be much more convenient however if I could use events to detect the mouse state.
    Thanks a lot in advance for any help!

    Hi Nishant,
    unfortunately, there is no option for mouse events under <this vi>, only keyboard. Do I have to install an additional package?
    Regarding my application:
    With the mouse scroll-wheel I want to interactively scale analog output data, i.e.: when I scroll in one direction data for an analog output task is multiplied by a specific value and given to the AO write vi (upscaled), when I scroll in the other direction the data is divided (downscaled).
    When I keep the right mouse button pressed and  the mouse is moved, an offset is being added to the data corresponding to the length of the mouse move (with the right button pressed).
    When the left button is pressed and the mouse is moved, a rotation operation is being done on the data.
    I have this implemented using the initialize mouse vis within a continuously running while loop, now I'm rewriting our application and I just realized that it would be very nice, if I could use mouse events just the same as keaboard events can be monitored within an event structure.
    Hope I was clear and thank you very much for any help!
    Look for pane (or control events) they have mouse events.
    I haven't tested the scroll wheel, looking at your code I would register for the mouse move event as soon as a mouse down event is happening as I have shown in my nugget.
