E-mail IMAP account again downloading messages

Hello,
My mail.app is setup using IMAP with my e-mail account on Apple OSX server 10.6. I've noticed that Mail.app randomly decides to download all the IMAP messages all over again at random intervals (could be a few hours, could be a few minutes). Additionally I know other people with this same issue. Does anyone here have this issue as well? If so, what is the problem?
Thanks pure admin...:)

no ideas?????? PLS i need help

  • Two Apple Mail imap accounts, but can never include 2nd account in REPLY ALL

Hi. I have two Apple Mail imap accounts. One for me and one for my boss. The problem is, if I receive an email in which my boss is cc'd and I then click on REPLY ALL, Mail never includes my boss's email address and I have to manually type it in. Is there anything I can do to fix this? Thank you.

Open Mail>Preferences>Accounts, scan down to the entry 'Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP)', click on the dropdown and select Edit SMTP Server List and verify that each account has the correct SMTP server set.
    Then close it
Once you have verified that the servers are set correctly check the box that says 'Use only this server' for each of the accounts.

  • Mail won't stop downloading messages... and won't quit either...

It just started a few days ago. It has been working just fine, even after I upgraded to Tiger (which was several months ago, finally). Over the last few days, when I launch Mail.app, it downloads all the same messages that have been on the server since Friday and won't ever complete the download. It just spins and spins. SO, the messages are never officially retrieved and removed from my POP server (which is a setting I have turned on). If I force quit the app. Or even quit the process (which doesn't usually have any effect), I then relaunch Mail.app and it re-downloads all the messages. Now I have about 5 copies of all these messages. And I can't seem to just quit the app.
I read a post that involved trashing the inbox and reimporting it back in. I'm not sure if that is the approach here. OR, if I can infact, just delete a particular cache file or temp file, or something that might get the Mail.app un-stuck.
Any thoughts? Let me know if you need any more specifics.
    Thanks!

Mail 1.x used MessageUidsAlreadyDownloaded to keep track of which messages had already been downloaded from the server. Mail 2.x uses MessageUidsAlreadyDownloaded2 for the same purpose. It could be that there is something wrong with that file, or with your Inbox, but it could also be that Mail is choking on some troublesome message on the server. Let's try this first:
    1. Quit Mail.
    2. In the Finder, go to ~/Library/Mail/POP-username@mailserver/.
    3. Move the MessageUidsAlreadyDownloaded files to the Trash.
    4. Move INBOX.mbox to the Desktop (don't trash it), to be imported later.
As a result or removing the MessageUidsAlreadyDownloaded files, Mail will try to download everythng still on the server as if new. You can use the Account Info window first to remove from the server any messages you don't want to be downloaded again. In order to do that, choose Get Info (⌘I) from the Action menu (gear icon) located below the mailboxes list in the main Mail window -- type "Account Info" in the search field of Mail Help for more information on this feature.

  • Mail won't stop downloading messages long ago deleted from server

I'm setting up my new macbook (with snow leopard) and I'm running into a problem with Mail. Even though I've deleted all my junk mail from the Google server and emptied the trash, Mail will still download everything every email I've received in the 2+ years I've had my gmail account (thousands of them)! Some of these messages are ones that I thought I got rid of years ago, it's a little scary to know they're still out there. If I go through the whole inbox, delete them, and empty my trash, they all just come back the next time I check for new mail. The gmail trash is also empty -- when I log into that there are only 50 messages in the inbox and nothing else. Help please!

The reason is that the emails aren't really deleted.
    They're "marked for deletion."
Gmail (as much as I understand it) is a variation on imap.
In an imap account, when you "delete" an email, it's marked for deletion.
The client then either stops displaying it, or displays it with s trike through, depending on client and setup.
To actually get rid of it permanently, you have to Purge the emails as well.
I don't know that Gmail will allow a purge, since their stated intent is to not delete any email, but to retain it forever.
I would suggest using a full email client like Thunderbird to send the proper Purge commands and see what happens.
Or, you use pop and set the date range in the gmail config.

  • Mail - erroneous "not been downloaded" message

Even though my account is online and emails have been downloaded... when opening emails (even previously read ones) Mail gives the following in in the email window:
"The message from "Person's Name" <[email protected]> concerning “the subject linet” has not been downloaded from the server. You need to take this account online in order to download it."
There is no logic to this problem as it happens sporadically... but very often.
I have to quit Mail and re-launch the program... this generally works, however, sometimes it take a couple of re-launches.
Help... Anyone? This is driving me crazy!
    Thanks

    Thanks!
    Here is the list:
    content_index 5.2 MB
FW_Juice_Planningw.mimeattac Zero KB (this is a Folder)
    Indo.plist 4KB
    mbox 1.14 GB
    tableofcontents 2 MB
I know my inbox is huge... however - I am a designer and need to keep my emails... is this causing the problem... if so, can I archive them?
    thanks again.

This indicates an "overstuffed" mailbox issue which
means the problem mailbox has some corruption.
If this occurs with the Inbox mailbox for a POP type
account, quit Mail first and using the Finder go to
Home > Library > Mail > this account named folder
(named by the user name and incoming mail server for
    the account) > INBOX.mbox.
Move the INBOX.mbox to the Desktop.
When re-launching Mail, a new (and empty) INBOX.mbox
will be created automatically by Mail within the
account named folder. This will allow the Mail.app to
function properly while working on the old INBOX.mbox
moved to the Desktop and not risk losing any new
    messages received by the account.
Control-click on the old INBOX.mbox moved to the
Desktop and at the menu window that appears, select
    Show Package Contents.

  • SL Mail IMAP account locks server mailbox

I have just installed Snow Leopard and updated Mail.
I have a main IMAP account here at work which I set to access new mail only manually so that I could access the mailbox from home on a different machine or indeed on walkabout at work from my touch ipod without closing Mail down here. This worked fine. Now the account is still set to get new mail manually but in fact is updating automatically and as a result locking the mailbox on the server. It looks like the manual setting does not work.
So what can I do other than shut down Mail every time I leave the room? In the interim I've set up a Pop account instead and deactivated the IMAP one. But I dare not remove the IMAP account and set it up again from scratch, which was my next idea, until someone tells me whether it will delete all the mailboxes on my machine as it suggests.

having the same problems as everyone else, have a aol imap account on mac mail program. pass word is not even being stored in keycain & when i go to mail preferences pass word is not listed under imap account. when i type in my pass word & save it just disappears when i recheck. whenever i restart my computer my postage stamp icon on dock keeps bouncing when i click stamp it asks for pass word. when i type in pass word and check on remember in key chain it does not accept. if i do not check remember in key chain i am ok again but only untill i restart my computer. then i have to go through same process again. i have telephone support with my computer and was on phone for 3 hrs last week but no help yet. was told a report would be sent to engernerring dept. if we are all having problems then i think it is a bug & we might need to wait for a apple software update. just hope i and others have not made problem worse by trying things. if anyone does have a solution to my password problem please get back to me.

I took note of the statement in your reply to jlhoop "On the first page of adding an account, fill in the info, then hold down the option key and click Continue. You can then manually enter the details as per the GoDaddy instructions.." Because if I could get to the option to change automatic selection of iMap, that would solve my issue. Where do I find "Continue"
to click it. Is it a key on my keyboard (which)? Or should it show up in
the dialogue box when I hold down the option key (it doesn't)?
The button name has changed to Create, and when you hold down the Option key, it changes to Next.
If you Add Other account in Internet Accounts, choose Mail account, then click Create. On the next sheet is where you enter the email address and password, then hold down Option and click "Next."

  • Loaded Yosemite onto mid 2011 MacBook Air. IMAP account goes offline - message - Mail cannot send your password securely to the server.  Allow insecure authentication doesn't work. Repeated reloads. No joy. Help!

Mail cannot send your password securely to the server. You can remove this restriction in the Accounts preferences by setting “Allow insecure authentication”, which could put your password at risk.

    I have the same problem.
    Late 2012 imac 27", intel i7 core
When I upgraded to Yosemite, suddenly my email account (netvigator POP) gives an error:
Mail cannot send your password securely to the server. You can remove this restriction in the Accounts preferences by setting “Allow insecure authentication”, which could put your password at risk.
I have shut down & restarted mail, but no success. If I select Allow insecure authentication, it works, but that's not a long term fix.
I also have a hotmail POP account enabled, and that is working fine.
    What's happening Apple??

  • MAIL -How delete dual downloaded messages

Today, suddenly, in two different versions [4.6 on MacMini Intel core( !0,6,8) and 2.13 on MacMini PC (10.4.11)]
mail downloaded 89 messages previously already on each computer from 9/16, preferences are to remove after one week
Is this a glitch in the Comcast system or in my computer? or ?
That occurred  Only in one of 6 mailboxes.
IS THERE A WAY IN MAIL to highlight only those double entries to eliminate them - without deleting other mails?

So, if I understand right, you want to export messages in such a way that you could re-import them into Mail if you ever wanted or needed to?
If so, do this. First, place these messages in an appropriately-named mailbox. You will be deleting this mailbox later, so you may want to create one specifically for this purpose. Also, make sure this is a local mailbox, not one stored on an IMAP server. Next, go to your Mail folder (in ~/Library/Mail/, where ~ means your home folder). In there, open the Mailboxes folder and locate the one you put the messages into. Copy it to a new location, wherever you want it to be for archival. Finally, go back to the Mail app and delete that mailbox (and all mail inside it).
In the future, if you want to import this mailbox again, just choose choose File->Import Mailboxes, select Mail for Mac OS X in the window that appears, press Continue and then select the folder that contains the mailbox you want to import. (This is counter-intuitive, IMO -- don't select the mailbox folder itself, or Mail will complain it can't find any mailboxes.)
    Good luck!

  • Mac Mail POP Account Not Receiving Messages

Using Mac Mail, I am suddenly not receiving messages in a POP account. The gmail account I use is working normally. Under connection doctor both accounts are green. Help, please?

Same problem here since upgrading to Mail 7.1 (1827). All the settings are seemingly correct. The emails are marked as 'Read' on the server but are not downloaded.
The emails are also deleted a week later as set in preferences.
Thinking the emails may have gone elsewhere I used Spotlight to look for them. No success there.
Real puzzle and yet another glitch on the latest Apple Mail.
Come on Apple, get your act together.

  • Any insight as to why multiple Apple Mail IMAP accounts with Blackberry don't get emails?  Thunderbird seems to work fine.

I have two instances of Apple mail connected to the same IMAP server; one on my iMac and the other on my MacBook (when I travel).  I also have a Blackberry Storm connected to the same IMAP server.
The Blackberry gets emails fine.  The Apple Mail clients mostly don't get the same emails.  I have disabled the Blackberry and still get the same behavior.  Thunderbird or any web-based email client works perfectly well, so it seems the issue is with Apple Mail.
    Anyone have any suggestions?
    Frank G

If TCP port 25 isn't open, then SMTP services won't work.  That's the port that all SMTP servers use to communicate amongst themselves.    (Sure, you can change the port your SMTP server is listening on, but you'd also have to change the port processing on all of the other SMTP servers around — and if you did manage to implement that change everywhere, the local network folks would likely just block the new port for the same reasons they blocked the old port.)
If you have a public static IP address and have correct forward and reverse translations — host domain to IP address, and IP address to host domain name — then you don't need and very likely don't want to run your own DNS server.
More to help you learn how these pieces fit together and not something I'd expect you would need given you have a public static IP and public DNS here is a detailed DNS server configuration article for OS X Server; enable Show All Records and it applies to Server.app on 10.7 and later.  If you have questions after reading that, I can certainly answer them and also update the article to try to reduce the confusion or answer the question.
Your host didn't have valid reverse DNS, so you'll want to get that cleared up, and you'll want to get the port blocks cleared, or work with the local network folks to set up a relay through one of the existing mail servers.

  • Mac Mail constantly downloading messages (iCloud)

I recently did the mobileme to icloud swtich to keep my me.com email.
Since Snow Leopard doesn't have an iCloud option and the MobileMe account option no longer works, I had to switch to create a new IMAP account with all of iCloud's server info.
Ever since, the mac mail.app has been downloading messages practically non-stop.
Every few minutes it will download 5000+ messages and growl notifications will fill up my screen. My mail folder is currently at 20gb and growing. I know there isn't that much mail data on the server as I originally had my mobileme limit set much lower.
I tried deleting the account and creating a new one again, however it still happens.
    Please Help!

Ever get an answer to this? I am having the same problem with my Gmail imap in Mac Mail 4.6.

  • Messages from POP account not showing up in IMAP account folders

I've posted on this already, but I'm a little clearer about what the issue is, so I'm gonna try again.
I'm using Mac Mail. Recently my ISP assigned me an IMAP account. [Customer service says "we only use POP," but I can't get a POP account.] Messages in my mailboxes show up fine. I'm having difficulty with the mailboxes directly associated with the account---Inbox, Sent, Draft, etc.
I have only one Inbox. There are three Sent folders---the one that is always at the top of the sidebar, and two in an IMAP-specific set of folders. I coped the older messages from the POP account into what I thought were the corresponding folders of the IMAP account. Copied messages appear only in one of the IMAP Sent folders. However, when opened, they have no content. In some cases there is an indication that the content is "loading" but nothing ever appears.
Is it possible to get the older messages from the POP to show up with content in the IMAP folders? I gather from reading related threads from the archive that copying messages between account types should not be a problem, but it is for me.
    Thanks,

Well, I thought I found a solution in the archives here: Import the old messages from within Mail. Had no doubt that would work. Well, it didn't. Though all the old messages were Apple Mail messages, when I tried to import Mail said, "No valid Apple Mail files were found." Tried importing them as mbox files. Same result.
IMAP has advantages for people who check mail from more than one device, or for multiple users of an account. Not having been forwarned by AT&T that I was going to be switched from POP to IMAP, it has been a big headache for me. And it clutters up the sidebar with a changing collection of folders, including many that seem redundant, and some whose purpose I can't, in my ignorance, imagine.
Supposed to get a call today or tomorrow from a unit in AT&T that is "specially trained" to handle problems like mine. We'll see.
I sure would like to get help from somewhere.
