Easy way to "Rebuild indexes" ?

is there some command which can rebuild all indexes on the fly ?
or do i have delete each index, then recreate it using the same indexing options ?
the problem is : our mailserver (iplanet messaging) has quite often a fragmented index of the attributes mail in the PAB database. I'd now like to periodically rebuild this index, without manual user intervention

There is a db2index command, but it may be broken in iDS 5.1. I'm not sure if iDS has the db2index.pl command, but it may be broken as well.
There is an interface into the indexing subsystem via LDAP - cn=index,cn=tasks,cn=config - you basically create an entry under this entry (e.g. cn=indextask2309842) and specify the correct parameters as attributes and values of this entry. I think the attributes and values are documented in the docs. I think there may be a bug in this code but I'm not sure if Sun fixed it.

I have been using bde_rebuild.sql (available from Metalink) with pretty good success. It seems to work better doing it schema by schema rather than supplying % for schema name (gets hung up and never completes).

I don't undestand the difference between "analyze index" and "rebuild index".
I have a table where I do a lot of "insert" and "update" and "query", What is the best thing to do ??

When you use dbms_stats.gather_schema_stats package with cascade=>true option, you are also collecting stats for the indexes, no need to collects stats separately using dbms_stats.gather_index_stats.Of course, but I refered to the rebuild index question. Therefore I only mentioned the GATHER_INDEX_STATS.
Auto_sample_size has many problems/bugs in 9iOk didn't know that - I'm using 10gR2.
But this discussion made me curious. So I tried something (10gR2):

I tested two different methods:
1.) GATHER_TABLE_STATS with estimate 10%

It took about 6 seconds (I only set timing on in sqlplus, no 10046 trace) Now I checked the estimated values:

It took about 1,5 seconds. Now the results:

The estimate 10% was more exact - also a 1,7 and 2,6 percent variance is still ok. It's also very interesting, that using AUTO_SAMPLE_SIZE
causes oracle to execute a estimate 5% for the index and a estimate 0.5 for the table.
I tried again with a table containing only 1 Million records and oracle did an estimate with 100% for the index.
So for me I will continue using AUTO_SAMPLE_SIZE. Its very flexible, fast and accurate.

Is rebuilding the index a reasonable option or will that be much slower than a sync ?

Is there an easy way to reimport all songs in my itunes folder?

This may sound like a weird question but here goes... When I bring up my iTunes I have 8731 files (mostly music) that come to about 41.33G's but when I right click on my iTunes Music folder and select properties there are 8809 files and a total of 48.5G's. I am trying to free up some disk space and can't figure out why there is such a difference. I had issues with Norton 360 and removed it but I had to restore my music files from an external drive and when I did so I lost the links for music that I added after my last back-up. I noticed that TV shows I bought from Apple were not in my iTunes but I was able to locate them in the folder, and import them back into iTunes. I have a feeling there are music files in my folders that are not linked to iTunes but can't figure out how to import them without going through all 8800+ files. Is there an easy way to import all the files without losing the current playcounts or a way to figure out which files may be duplicated in my iTunes Music folder. Seems like I am wasting 7G somewhere that I would like to recover. I already went through the duplicate songs and that didn't help. Any suggestions would be great...

AFIK there isn't an easy way of linking up to a lot of dead tracks and retaining play counts etc, except by finding the dead tracks and repairing each link individually. The only exception to this is if there is a simple error in the path that can be fixed by a search and replace on the xml library file, then rebuilding the library. However it doesn't sound as though that would be a solution for you.
This MacMuse tip has a way of finding dead tracks if that helps.

It is much simpler to sacrifice the playcount information and just reimport your iTunes Music folder. Then you can eliminate the dead tracks with a script. One of the forum members has written one that you can find here:

I am looking to "move out" of my computer and into my wife's, is there an easy way to accomplish this task, keeping all my files and setting up a second user?

I just bought a new external 3TB hard drive for this task and want to keep my items seperate from hers for both our sanity.
I figured that I would do a time machine back up and use that to do the move part of things.
But as to setting up the new user on her computer I am just not sure if I can "tell" the computer to only use the new drive for my stuff and only acces the new drive for all things related to that new profile.
More then anything else I want to be able to say that all things that are hers have not been touched/acccesed/deleted by any of my actions. And that I am "confined" to the new drive.
I hope this makes sence.

Is there an easy way to see how many rows in a table? (selected or unselected)

Hi all,
Forgive me if this is a REALLY dumb question but I would love to know if there there is an easy way to to see how many rows there are in a table in InDesign?
(And I bet I am really going to kick myself when I hear the answer and how simple it probably is..lol !)
I am working on a huge catalog and am dealing with LOTS of tables...very long tables too at times. I am also doing a lot of copying and pasting back and forth between InDesign and Excel and it would REALLY help if I knew how many rows there are in a table without having to manually count them (TIRESOME!!).
Also, is there a way to see how many rows I have selected at any one time? It would be SO WONDERFUL if the info box could also provide this information.

You need not select whole rows, just one or a couple of cells.
Then run the script.
An alert message is telling you how many rows belong to the cell range you have selected and:
which rows of the table are selected…
A typical message would be:
6 row(s) selected.
3 to 8 out of 20 of current table.
The script does some basic checks of the selection.
If no cell or table is selected, it will just do nothing…

Multiple objects with same name when rebuilding index online

I am looking for advice on how to handle a race-condition in sql server, related to reading metadata while an online index rebuild is being performed.
The problem is as follows:
At some point we execute the following statement:

The statement returns some metadata for indexes (indices?), the purpose of wich is not the subject.
When executed while an online index rebuild is running, a race condition occurs: When the rebuilding enters the final phase, the new index, which have the same name, becomes visible and thus results in two rows with the same name (from sys.object). I am unaware
if this only occurs for clustered index (which is what we have observed).
We became aware of this behaviour, as we added the metadata to a .Net Dictionary using name as key, and received a duplicate key exception. We have, hoewever, not been able to reproduce the situation, due to the nature of the race condition, and we found very
little documentation on the subject.
What we would like to do now, is to differentiate between the two. We see two options:
1) We could just use the first of the rows and ignore the second. This solution would require that the metadata for both rows are identical.
2) We could discern the "real" index from the "rebuilding" index. This requires some kind of extension of the Where-part.
We have not been able to determine if the requirements for either option is present, as we havent found any documentation, nor have we been able to test for differences, as we cannot reproduce the situation.
We would also like some way of reproducing the situation, so ideas as to how to do that is welcome.
Can anyone direct me to relevant documentation, or alternate solutions.

2. To reproduce, block the online index rebuild process by trying to alter the table's definition in a transaction (and don't commit, which will place schema lock on the table)

Is there an easy way to replace spry menus with jQuery menu system?

I just learned that Adobe is no longer using spry or that spry does not work on mobile devices. My entire site (built in CS5.5 moved to CS6) is built with 3 different spry menu systems. I have been told about jQuery, and many other menu system options. I work in design view and can copy and paste code, read code etc...but cant write it to save my life. I cannot seen to understsand how a different menu software system will integrate with DW especially when I use design view. My question is, is there an easy way to change my spry menu's? I have 2 spry menu bars, spry tabbed menus on EVERY page and a spry accordian menu that repeats on all pages. I am working with a template I built, so hopefully it is an easy fix.

Is there an easy way to remove duplicates in my library?

Hi there, since I first started using my ipod, I've had a new laptop. Having finally figured out (with your help!) how to move the songs from my ipod to the library on my new laptop, I did the transfer but it's duplicated loads of the tracks.
Is there an easy way to remove them/stop that from happening?

Is there an easy way to tell if all the variables between changing parts of an array are null? Ex: If all object variables between index 4 and 10 are null, do this...
ex 2: If all object variables between index 0 and 3 are null, do this...
etc.

SomeString.split(" ")   is there an easy way

Is there an easy way to split a sting into an array and leave out indexes that contain what I am spliting by?
the string I want to split is :
"Average 43 40 16 1"
lets say I am spliting the string with " "

Is there an easy way to replace/swap assets?

I output my short from Avid, ran it through Compressor, and made a DVD in DVD Studio Pro.
Now I've done some re-cuts and want to create a DVD of the new version, using the DVD Studio Pro file I used for the last DVD. Is there an easy way in DVD Studio Pro to "relink" the new video assets to replace the old ones in the new version? This would save me from rebuilding the main menu button, redesigning navigation, and recreating chapter marks.
I have found a workaround - Quit DVD Studio Pro, "hide" the old assets in a folder, and then direct DVD Studio Pro to the new assets when it asks where the old assets are located. But I wonder if there is an easier way to do this from inside the program.

I assume you mean replace the old ones with the new ones on the Finder level?
Well, part of my goal is to avoid destroying, re-naming, or moving the old assets.
