Editing after extracting audio?

Hi there,
I am running iMovie HD, and have a question about editing.
I extracted the audio from my video clip, and now I want to do some editing. However, whenever I make an edit to the video clip, the audio doesn't reflect the edit and immediately gets out of sync.
Is there anyway to recombine the audio and video? Or, can I just make the audio take the same cuts as the video?
I need to use the extracted audio, as I made some changes to it.

Robert,
The extract audio command really places a copy of a the audio from a clip into one of the two audio tracks. At the same time it lowers the volume level in the original video to zero.
As you've discovered, once extracted, the extracted copy becomes it's own entity and will not reflect any further edits to the video clip.
At this point you could reset the volume in the video to 100% and re-extract or try to edit your audio to reflect the changes to your video.

hello, does anyone know if you can add transitions or even certain transitions after you have extracted audio without affecting the synch of audio and video. in my case i needed to extract the whole audio portion, add clips, and now am trying to add some smooth transitions. thanks.

Hi drjsv - no-one seemed game to offer a comment, and I have not got a segment of video to test in this way, and nor have I ever needed that fine degree of synchro. But you can trial it and then if it is not satisfactory, just undo the transition. Maybe you have done that already! I'd be interested to know the result.

Garbled Audio Problem after Extract Audio

Hi Everyone,
Have a problem that I hope someone can help me with.
I extracted audio from a long iMovie (about 1:55) today. When I try to play it back, you get this awful noise. Sounds like an airplane or a very mechanical stuttering sound.
HOWEVER, when I refer back to each extracted audio file (i.e. Voice 01, Voice 02 etc) they sound fine. Something is happening when iMovie tries to play the voice files. (there are 148 such files in my movie.)
I am completely stumped. I've made many movies in the exact same manner that I've made this one, and they sound fine.

Extracted audio after putting in video transitions and lost audio on trans

Hi,
I edited video clips and added transitions, then extracted the audio- now there is no audio during the transitions, and no way to fade in the audio with the transition- there is just a blank space in the audio track under the transition- no waveform at all until the clip begins after the transition.
Can anyone help?

The idea is to do it the other way around.
• first extract audio
• then insert transition
• then fix the audio "transition"
If You turn on "Rubber band" Shift-Cmd-L (Content menu and down to Show Volume level)
On the original video clip this line is now on bottom - drag it up to 100%
Most possibly it's so on the extracted audio clips too.
Else
restore the video clips and re-do in the right order.

Extracting audio from video file to edit...

i know in imovie it's easy you just select the video then go up top and select the extract audio tab...
but how can you extract the audio from a video file in final cut so are able to edit the audio and video files separately from one another WITHIN final cut??

no output volume? ... you need to check your setting under the View menu > Audio Playback ... where are you sending the audio? maybe you're routing it to follow the video out through firewire to your DV device, in which case you need to turn up the speakers on your DV monitoring equipment
...or is this a muxed MPEG file? if so you need to demux it before bringing it into FCP, or better still, convert it to a more appropriate edit codec (you can use the excellent and free MPEG Streamclip application to do this)

How to let Premiere or Audition put Extracted audio clips into a desired folder when clicking "Edit clips in Audition"?

I recently did Volume Match for entire feature film dialogue clips, what happened is I found lots of extracted audio clips scattered around in my Media hard disk, luckily I only have one Hard disk for all media, I look it in Preferences in both Premiere and Audition, there is no such setting to put all extracted audio clips in one designated folder. Anyone has any solution to that?

When I send a Premiere sequence to Audition it makes a subfolder with the same name as the Premiere sequence I sent from automatically. All I have to do is specify a path before I hit OK. If you are sending one clip at a time it seems to save that extract next to the Premiere project file.

How to split video and extracted audio clip at same time?

I imported 10 min of DV from my Sony HC96 camcorder to iMovie 6.
I selected a video clip and split it using cmd-T but the extracted audio clip below it did not split. How can I split both the video and underlying audio clip so I can drag the edge of the new video clip for editing by direct trimming and keep the audio dialogue in sync. I have already gotten the clip volume levels right in the extracted audio.
This seems pretty basic editing but I must be missing something.

Thanks, Sue. Let me see that I have this right. I split the video then the audio. I then selected and trimmed the video to the remove the 10-15 seconds I wanted to remove. To keep the dialogue in sync with the speaker's lips, I then selected and trimmed the audio to the same time as I trimmed the video. Then I dragged the audio clip back up to the new start of the trimmed video clip. I did this and the dialogue and lips seem to be in sync.
I guess originally I had looked for a solution where I cut both clips at the same time and trimming one trimmed the other. But now I see I just need to do them separately. Thanks for the help, Sue!

You can't do both at the same time, but you can do
them one right after the other. Highlight the audio
and split it after you split the video and be sure to
keep the playhead in the same position.

Extracting audio from premier project is not automatically opening in audition .How to reset this

I was using the feature of extracting audio from a time line in Premier for working on noise reduction and so on .It used to open automatically on choosing
" EDIT CLIP IN AUDITION" and on "saving" it was ready in Premier for further action. Now this is not happening. What happened and how do I reset this feature please?

Not a reply but some more input. The culprit is not Safari but iChat, which I discovered just now, having run the app and quit after the person I was inviting wasn't available. I'm grateful for anyone who shed some light on this for me.

Extracted audio takes up too much space?

I'm editing a video that's about 1 hour and 20 minutes long.
I'm putting music over about 2/3 of it, and want to keep the audio from the rest, but I get the annoying audio blip between clips with transitions, so I tried extracting audio from the clips where I want to keep it.
It works fine for a little while, but the more clips I extract the audio from, the longer each one takes, and the whole program seems to get bogged down.
I understand the audio is extracted from the entire original clip. Is there any cure for this problem? I still have 18GB available on my hard drive and the extracted audio seems to be about 1GB.

Hi Punky,
I usually extract all the audio in one hit after I have finished editing the movie then deselect the audio box for the clips timeline. This way there are no hassles with the audio being out of sync.
As for it hanging during extraction: Which Mac are you using and how much RAM do you have? Have you run a system cache cleaner lately, like Onyx? What other apps do you have running while you are using iMovie? You could also try removing the iMovie.plist (preference) file.

Extracted audio caused distortion in video timing

i need help!
i am making a music video for class.
from the edit menu i chose select all and then extracted audio, so that I could go in individually to each clip and delete the audio i did not need. when i tried to do a test delete and played the clip back the audio was gone like i wanted, but the song and the video were totally out of sync and my computer froze up and just played a bleep of sound here and showed a random clip there.
it took forever to unfreeze. it is still out of sync even after restarting my computer. the audio is still extracted from all the clips but the video and audio are still totally out of sync. I'm thinking if I could just unextract all the audio or revert it back to the original...that would solve the problem, but it will not let me do so?
some of the audio files are still available in my trash including audio for the whole video.
any suggestions?

Welcome to iMovie Discussions.
'Extracting' audio just copies it and puts it in an audio track underneath the video, and then silences the original sound within the video clip. So it does two jobs, instead of just silencing the audio.
To silence audio within a clip, just click on the little clock, at lower left, to show the full Timeline view, and then in the Menu at the top of the screen use 'View' and 'Show Clip Volume Levels'. You can then select a clip, and click on the little loudspeaker icon, alongside the volume level "Clip: 100%".
Your audio going out of sync sounds more like iMovie 4 rather than iMovie5/HD. But if your hard disc is close to being full on the iBook, that can cause problems for iMovie.
To fix things, you could try the following:
(1) As your audio should now be in separate audio clips beneath the video, you should be able to click on and then slide ('drag') your audio clips to line them up with the appropriate video, then use Apple+'L' to Lock the audio to the relevant video.
(2) As all the original audio remains within the video clips, but it's just had its volume reduced to zero during the 'Extraction', you could select the video clips, and return their volume up to 100% with that little volume slider at the bottom of the screen. When you've done that, UN-TICK (un-check) the little boxes at the extreme right which switches on or off the sound from the audio track(s), so that only the video track is ticked, and try playing the video: all the audio should now be back. If that plays OK, you can then just delete all the separate audio in the track(s) beneath, then Save your project. Then re-tick (check) the audio track boxes again, so that they're not disabled.
The original audio should now be restored, and you can do what you like with it. But it's always better to just reduce to zero any sound you don't want, rather than duplicating it - by 'Extracting' - and then just silencing the original ..and possibly the duplicate. That doubles the work which your Mac has to do during playback ..as it has to keep looking for the separate audio instructions, in its master project file, as well as playing back the video.
So (a) make sure that you've LOTS of spare space on your iBook, and (b) don't strain it too much by giving it too much to do, and (c) things may go smoother if you keep your video projects on a separate, fast (5400rpm or faster) FireWire hard disc (formatted as 'Mac OS Extended' or 'HFS+') plugged in to the iBook, rather than on the iBook's internal disc, and (d) make sure that you have no other programs running when you're editing with iMovie ..as iMovie needs as much of the Mac's attention as possible, and may be sluggish on a slow Mac if there are other programs running.

Audio Out of Sync in iDVD 6 Even When Extracting Audio iMovie 6

I realize this issue has been addressed since the first release of iDVD, but the previous workarounds of “Extracting Audio” in iMovie 6 no longer seem to keep the audio in sync when burning to iDVD 6. In fact, the audio is even out of sync in the iDVD preview now; i.e, the preview correctly shows the audio will be out of sync on the DVD-Video.
I have read at least one post that states Extract Audio (in iMovie) does nothing but pastes the audio on a separate track, but Apple’s own Knowledge Base offers this as a solution.
For those of us that have years of video that is analog or 12 bit, the Extract Audio seemed to be the solution, but no longer.
As a noteworthy side comment not meant to make this post too long, iMovie 6 is significantly slower in extracting the audio for a 2 -hour project, taking hours, and making the iMovie file 50MB. The process sometimes stalls to the point where “Force Quit” shows iMovie in Red and “Not Responding” but the process does eventually complete. The previous versions would keep the audio and video files in a separate folder and the iMovie file was a more manageable size. Any suggestions or insight would be appreciated.

I am fairly new to iDVD 6 and iMovie HD (widescreen), but I an currently assembling a highlight DVD for my daughter's softball team. We are in mid season. I had been creating separate movies (per game). I extracted audio and/or added sound and video effects to some of the movies clips. Alas not only do the extracted (original audio) and added audio (outdoor cheer) disappear but also the video special effects (slow motion) are not maintained in widescreen but are pillarboxed when copied/pasted.
At any rate, I am have now created a compilation iMovie and will be dumping new footage into it as we go. Editing the compilation, as well as editing separate "save as" individual game movies.
I only had 2-3 clips that had been audio manipulated and shared those back to my video camera and then reimported from camera back to the compilation project. The extracted audio with separate tracks are now a single audio clip but at least I have audio during those clips.
To end this ramble, knowing the limitations of messing with audio and trying to cut and paste to different movies I will now create duplicate movies with a master having no audio enhancements.

I hadn't thought about this option. It seems like a
lot of work. I wish there was an easier way. I have
archived ("Shared" to full dv quality) to DVD-ROM
discs all the raw .dv clips AFTER extracting the
audio, hoping that I could use these clips to
assemble custom DVD-Videos in the future, without
having to "Extract Audio" a second time. The .dv
clips all play perfectly with the audio synced in
Quicktime. Of course, the clip's audio was in sync
before the "Extract Audio" was applied. This sync
problem ONLY rears it's ugly head with iDVD Video
discs (don't know about DVD Pro). Thanks again for

Extracted Audio longer than movie clip, please help...

I was reading some of your FAQ's about extracted audio being
recomposed with a mono instead of stereo for exported audio from a microphone or other mono device, and then importing it back into iMovie after mixing it in Quicktime, to make it stereo (albeit with only mono feed).
My question is this:
I extract the audio from the clip that I am running, and it is fine and good while within iMovie, however, once I drag and drop it to my desktop, and open it with quicktime and either play it or export it as mono to get it to play through both speakers, it uses the original
length of audio not the edited version that i pull from imovie. It is very frustrating, and I am not sure why it keeps doing this.
While it is in iMovie, the audio and video match, and are synched. But, when I export it, for some reason, it exports the original audio from the unedited clip (which has already been deleted!), and I don't know what to do to get it to export just the audio clip as it stands now within iMovie.
Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Aesthesia - that is a fact of life of non-destructive editing. When audio is extracted from a shortened, cropped clip, it actually extracts the entire audio from the underlying original source clip. You can test this by extracting audio from a cropped clip, and you will find that you can, by direct editing, extend it back to its original length.
That explains why the audio file when played outside of iMovie plays at the original length.

I have installed the Adobe "MasterCollectionSuite-CS5"-ITA with PremiereProCS5 and SoundboothCS5.
I made a few test with PremierePro Audio clips and used the option "Make a rendering and extract" with Soundbooth.
I want know, after that operation:
- Exists an option (a shortcut) to revert automatically the audio tracks from the extracted Soundbooth clips to the original audio footage?
- In other words, I want return to the original audio timeline situation, prior to make the extraction with Soundbooth. Is it possible?
- I know just one method:
Click and drag the video clip from timeline and release the clip in the "Source"Monitor window. After that I can drag the video+audio at the same start-and-end point of the source and put it into timeline, at the same place...
But with this method I loose the applied effects and transitions from the edited clips in the timeline...
Exists another method?

After you have edited the Audio file in Soundbooth, you should:
1)      Select the Original Footage in PremierePro > Project Folder
2)      Select with RIGHT Click the Video+Audio Clip in PremierePro Timeline, and in RIGHT Click Menu choose “Replace/Substitute with clip” > “From Folder”
3)      Now you can delete in PremierePro > ProjectFolder, the named Audio File “…_Extracted.wav” edited previously with Soundbooth!
The new one is your original footage!

Extracting audio tracks from a specialized CD

I am quite new to the Adobe A/V applications having used Sony Sound Forge and Vegas for many years. I am now a monthly Creative Cloud subscriber and thought it might be a good idea to learn Audition, Premiere, etc. since I also use Photoshop, Dreamweaver, Lightroom, and Acrobat.
My audio workflow is probably quite different than most in that I work part-time at a church and deal with a number of CDs that always contain split tracks (instruments left; voices right), and usually a demo track and a stereo instrument only track. The split track and stereo instrument versions of the song contain multiple tracks within them for practice purposes. When I use the "Extract audio from CD..." command I usually select all of the tracks but would like to have all of those tracks included in ONE .wav file with markers inserted at each track. Is that possible?
The only way I have been able to reconstruct the multi-track single song files after extracking them in Audition is to open each track in Audition and then create a multitrack session and piece each song together on a single track line. This is time consuming, especially when some of the CDs have multiple songs and may contain 70-90 individual tracks (divisions).
Another thing I have not been able to figure out how to do is to take a split track that is contained within a stereo Audition track in a multitrack session and create two mono tracks - one containing the instruments, and one containing the voices. Our choir director will sometimes want to eliminate parts of the vocal tracks and use a soloist instead and having the two tracks as separate mono tracks makes that easier, although I know I can open the piece up in the waveform editor and have access to either the left or right track separately.
I am also looking for a manual or online course for learning several of the Adobe products. Any suggestions?

Thank you durin! Yes, File > Open Append is much faster. It requires, however, that I know which track numbers make up an entire song. Then the Edit > Extract Channels to Mono Files works great too. After working on the individual tracks I then Ctrl-clicked on each track and did Multitrack > Bounce To New Track > Selected Track to convert it back into a stereo track in the waveform editor. From there I can add it to a CD layout along with the other songs we are going to use on a Sunday.
I’m still working on the editing of the sermons I record for the purpose of burning CDs and also putting on our website. There are a lot of pauses that I need to take out and I have used Audition to help automate that process. I haven’t quite gotten it adjusted correctly yet as it seems to be deleting too much. I am also looking for a way to do a global delete of certain sounds like the sound many speakers make just before starting a sentence by putting their tongue against the front of their lower teeth and making a “clicking” sound.
I really like your “Skip Selection” option as I use a similar command in Sound Forge to check the area I am about to delete to check continuity before deleting the selection. In fact, I programed my mouse to do that with the push of one of its buttons. Will probably do that in Audition too.
I’m beginning to like Audition more and more each time I use it. Can’t wait to learn Premiere and its related applications!

Extract audio ?

Will someone please explain Extract Audio, Scroll to Playhead, Paste Over at Playhead, and Lock Audio at Playhead for me? When I don't understand a menu Option I am afraid to use it and have never tried any of them. I sort of understand Extract Audio but not Scroll to, Paste Over at, or Lock Audio at Playhead.
Can audio be separated from picture and shifted in time? If so is it done by the clip or all clips in the timeline at one time?

Extracting the sound from a video clip
Sometimes you may want to separate the audio track from a video clip. This is a good idea if you want to copy the audio to another location in your movie, or crop out any sounds. This technique is also useful if you recorded narration using your video camera and don't want to use the video.
To extract sound from a video clip:
Click the Timeline Viewer button (shown above).
Select the video clip or clips whose audio you want to extract.
Choose Advanced > Extract Audio.
The extracted audio appears as a separate clip in audio track 1 of the timeline viewer.
You can also adjust the volume of an extracted audio clip, move or copy it to a new location, change its length, and more.
Cutting, copying, and pasting clips
To copy or move your video and audio clips, you can use the Copy, Cut, and Paste commands, much as you do to edit text in a word-processing application. For example, you can use this technique to copy or move clips from the Clips pane to your movie, or to move clips around within a movie. You can also copy a video or audio clip from a different project into the one you're working on.
To copy or move a clip:
Select the clip or the part of it you want to cut or copy.
To learn how to select part of a video clip, see Related Topics below.
Do one of the following:
To move the clip, choose Edit > Cut.
To copy the clip, choose Edit > Copy.
To paste the clip in your movie, move the playhead (shown below) where you want the clip to appear.
Tip: If you want to paste the clip immediately after a specific clip in your movie or the Clips pane, select the clip you want it to appear after.
Choose Edit > Paste.
Note: When you position the playhead within a clip in your movie and choose Paste, the clip in your movie is split at the playhead and the pasted video (along with its soundtrack) or audio is inserted at that point. (Any video or audio that appears after the playhead is moved to the right in the clip or timeline viewer.)
If you want to paste over existing video or audio in your movie, choose Advanced > "Paste Over at Playhead." The pasted clip replaces the existing video or audio to the right of the playhead instead of moving it to the right.
Locking audio clips to video
You can lock an audio clip to a particular point in a video clip so that when you move the video clip, the audio moves with it. This is useful if you want a sound effect, narration, or a song to always accompany a specific part of your movie.
To lock an audio clip to video:
If necessary, choose iMovie HD > Preferences, click General, and select the "Snap to items in Timeline" checkbox.
Click the Timeline Viewer button (A, shown above).
Drag the playhead (B, shown above) to the frame where you want the the audio to start.
Tip: To precisely adjust the playhead position, press the Left or Right Arrow key to move the playhead one frame at a time. To move the playhead in ten-frame increments, hold down the Shift key while pressing the arrow key.
Drag the audio clip so that its starting point lines up with the "ghosted" playhead (shown below).
A yellow line appears and the edge of the clip automatically "snaps" against the edge of the "ghosted playhead" when you reach the frame you selected in step 3.
Choose Advanced > "Lock Audio Clip at Playhead."
Yellow "push pins" indicate that the audio is locked to the video.
To unlock the audio, select the clip and choose Advanced > Unlock Audio Clip.
Note: You can still change the location of a locked audio clip by dragging it. However, the video clip does not move with it, and iMovie automatically locks the audio clip to its new location.
