Editing hosts file SharePoint 2010 Production

Hello,
I have SharePoint 2010 Farm, and I have two web applications; mysite and sharepoint.
How do I suppose to change hosts file?
I currently have
127.0.0.1 sharepoint
127.0.0.1 mysite
Do I need to put NLB IP address instead of 127.0.0.1?
Thanks

There isn't really a reason to use a hosts file. For Search Crawl traffic, using the HOSTS file is not the proper way to target search, instead using the Web Application property SiteDataServers, or I have a project that makes this graphical, https://crawl.codeplex.com.

  • Login prompt appearing when opening Excel Files - SharePoint 2010 SP1 - Office 2007

    hi,
i have 2 sites on the same server, 1 at Port 80 and 1 at port 8300

    https://contoso.com:8300
Both are under same AD and credentials.
But when users on 8300 port site, tries to open office files such as Word or Excel.
In read only mode, login credentials screen comes atleast 3 times again and again, although users are using same and correct credentials

I have saves their credentials locally using credentials vault under user accounts.

    Hi,
For Login prompt appearing, please refer to:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943280. also, please make sure you have already add this site into trusted sites zone in IE since after this settings, you will not get the read only/edit popup windows. you can change different computers to test
to check if the office settings has some special. in addition, please keep one version of office product.
For he excel files open in browser and then have a option to open in Excel, please go to library settings > advanced settings > Opening Documents in the Browser to check if both sites have the same settings. also, maybe you miss click the open in word/

  • Point of Entry Excel form w/data to Flow into Access DB Hosted on SharePoint 2010

    Hello -
I have an Excel file with multiple tabs that require different people to enter data.  I need to post the Excel file on SharePoint with the data entered to flow into an Access DB.  I am new to SharePoint and would appreciate any ideas or thoughts
on how to accomplish this task.
    Thanks!

    Hi,
According to your post, my understanding is that you wanted to post the Excel file on SharePoint with the data entered to flow into an Access DB.
Both Access and Excel provide commands to connect to data in SharePoint lists. Excel 2010 provides a read-only (one-way) connection to linked SharePoint lists; whereas Access 2010 lets you read and write (two-way) data in linked SharePoint lists.
You can synchronize Excel 2010 and SharePoint 2010 with a download and install of a
    Microsoft Excel Addin.
You can synchronize Excel 2010 and Access 2010  with Sharing data by linking to an Excel worksheet from Access or Connecting to Access data from Excel

  • Unable to edit Hosts file in Win7 Home Prem 64bit.

Clean install.  Administrator account.  Unable to edit the permissions of the hosts file. There is one in the drivers\etc file, which I cannot edit. There is supposed to be one in %systemroot% \SysWOW64\drivers\etc   but there is no etc folder in the drivers folder.
Turned off DNS Server. gpedit.msc not found when calling it in "run".  This is the first time I've used 64bit anything, so a bit of a newb in that respect.
    Any ideas?

    Hi,
As you would know, some of the Windows 7 users can’t save the host file how they like it. The host file itself will simply vanish what the user had done with it.
In my scenario, I was unable to fix this even after all the instructions provided in above posts. Hence, I have come up with my own idea and luckily it
    worked.<o:p></o:p>
For those users who experience this problem, here are the instructions to fix it.
First of all, you should have the administrative privileges to edit the host file. In normal case, if an admin user directly go to the host file in system 32 and add his preferences
and then save it, it should keep the changes. However, in some wicked scenarios, it will not. I had done a detailed research on this through all the available online forums and even contacted Microsoft several times with no luck.
So, here you go with a correct solution for this problem.
Note: If you are not comfortable with Windows OS and don’t know what you are doing, this process can mess up things.
Hence, do not attempt if you are not 100% sure you can make it.
    Login to an administrator account.
In the run command (Windows key + R) type, “control folders” and hit enter.
Click on the tab called view.
Select the radio button for Show hidden files, folders and drivers –ON.
Uncheck the ‘Hide extension for known file types-ON
Click on Apply and then OK.
Type “drivers” in run command and hit enter. It will take you to where the folder “drivers” located in System 32.
From the “drivers” folder, double click the folder named “etc.”
Now you can see the “host” file along with others.
Now, in the search area in start menu, type “notepad.exe” and open the notepad.exe as administrator. (In order to do this, you can right click on the notepad.exe shown and select
“Run as Administrator.” If UAC prompted, click YES/OK)
Now, you will have a notepad open with administrative privileges.
At the top left side of the notepad click on “file” and then select “Open.”
A box will appear which will allow you select the file to open. Carefully, navigate to the location where the “host” file is located. To do that, select the drive where you
installed Windows. If you have the Windows installed in C: select ‘Local Disk (C :)’ > Windows > System 32 > drivers > etc. At this point, you might not have another option to proceed or select from. The window would be empty. To proceed further,
select the option “All files” from the drop down menu which is located above the “Open” and “Cancel” button. You can now see all the files located in etc folder.
Select “hosts” from the menu and click on “Open.” Note: You can either click on open or double click on the file.
Now, you will have the host file information open in the notepad which you had already initiated before with administrative privileges.
Make whatever changes you as you wish. (Example: If you need to block a web site called
    www.block123.com you can type 127.0.0.1
www.block123.com right under the local hosts.
Make sure you do not change any other letters or characters which are already saved in host file.
This will completely mess up your computer. For more information on the information about host file, refer the Microsoft web site:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/972034 . If you
have accidently delete/edit anything from host file, please delete the complete information stored in host file and copy and paste the host file information from Microsoft which is appropriate for your Operating System.)
Click on “file” again and select “Save as” and save it in etc. If the path is showing correct to etc folder, save it to etc. If it is navigated to somewhere else, follow the
instructions provided above and select etc folder and then save it.
Now, go back to the actual host file location which is in System32 > Drivers > etc (You would have it already open if you had followed the instructions just like the way
    I have provided)
There you can see 2 host files. One which has already been there and the other one you just saved.
Among the two, one is called “hosts” and the ‘type’ would be ‘file.’ This is the original host file. The other which you have just saved will be named as “hosts.txt” with the
    file type as ‘Text Document.’
Right click on the original host file and select rename. You can even click on that file and press F2. This will enable the option to rename the file. Rename the original host
file as “hostold” and hit enter.
Now, select the second host file which we have saved as a text document and rename it as “hosts.” Make sure that you DELETE the .txt file extension in order to change the type
“Text Document” to “File” and hit enter.
Now, you have successfully saved the host file with your preferences.
You can now delete the file which we renamed as “hostold.”
We are done. You would need to do this process all over if you need to edit the host file again. I know it is difficult, however, it is our own requirement and we have to invest
    few minutes on this.
Enjoy your computer with a great feeling that you have finally edited the host file as per your wish and take it from here. Wish you luck.
Should you have any questions, please feel free to ask.

  • Problem editing hosts file in Snow Leopard

I am having trouble editing my hosts file in Snow Leopard. Well, I can edit it fine, but the changes seem to give no effect whatsoever.
My hosts file looks like so:
    # Host Database
    # localhost is used to configure the loopback interface
    # when the system is booting. Do not change this entry.
    127.0.0.1 localhost
    255.255.255.255 broadcasthost
    ::1 localhost
    fe80::1%lo0 localhost
    127.0.0.1 localhost www.localhost.com
I cannot access localhost by entering '127.0.0.1' into my browser, nor can I access it by entering 'www.localhost.com'.
Firefox simply tells me either 'Unable to Connect' or 'The Connection was reset', respectively.
Is there something I am doing wrong?? I have been looking all over the internet all week and cannot see what I might be missing!
The only way I can connect to localhost is by visiting 'http://localhost:8888/'.
If it helps, I am running MAMP.
Thanks to anyone who can help.

Never mind, I found out MAMP was using port 8888 instead of 80, so I reset it and now it works fine

  • Edit hosts file in WRVS4400N

    Hi all,
Just wondering if there's a hosts file (for setting DNS name to IP address association) in Linksys routers, specifically the WRVS4400N, that can be edited? I'm living in an area where certain DNS entries are high-jacked, such as dyndns.org, and as such I can't use DDNS unless I set the host's IP address manually - ideally I'd like the Linksys router to do DDNS.
    Thanks in advance!
    Mike.

if your internet provider is messing around with the dns service that it provides then stop using their dns service completely and use OpenDNS instead
    http://www.opendns.com
basically, this means using the publicly available dns servers from OpenDNS (see below) instead of the ones that your isp has.
    208.67.222.222 and
    208.67.220.220
Fill those in in the router wan connection setup page -> dns servers to use fields, give the router a normal reboot (just to make sure it uses those... but sometimes is not needed) and you're all set to go.

  • Infopath list form displays blank in edit mode in SharePoint 2010

    Hi,
I have a custom list in SharePoint 2010. I am using InfoPath 2010 form to Insert and Edit list data. The list was working fine in the past days. Suddenly the InfoPath form displays nothing when I click on the Edit Item Button but its working fine in New
Item and Read Only mode. I checked Form Web Parts--> Content Type Forms--> (Item) Edit Form where the InfoPath form Web Part is missing. I added the InfoPath Form Web Part manually there then the InfoPath form displaying blank where
list data is available. All other lists are working fine in the site collection.
Would somebody help to resolve this issue?
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi pointtoshare,
When you added a new item in the custom list, whether this issue occurred.
Whether you could customize the custom list form using InfoPath.
Please click on “Customize Form”, it will be opened with InfoPath, check whether the default view has data. And create a new view, set it as default view, publish it , compare the result.
    I hope this helps.
    Thanks,

  • Not given the option to save files hosted on Sharepoint 2010 site.

We have a problem with opening forms on our intranet site.
We have hosted some forms which staff will search for in order to fill them in, only the experience is being jilted somewhat by what seems to be a simple issue. When opening a document for reference, you are given the option to Save the file. On a document
which is actually a form, we aren't presented with the opportunity to initially save it. Instead, the banner only asks if you want to Open the download, which then opens in the Word 2010 Web App. The problem is, this initially is not an editable file, which
causes confusion for the end users.
I wanted to share a screenshot of the banner bar but have not yet had this account verified, I will see to that now.
Can anyone advise how this can be altered on the back end so we have the "Save" function offered up as well?
    Kind regards,
    Craig M.

Hi Craig, your post is a little confusing. Could you provide a step by step of opening the document/form? Let us know what happens exactly at each stage. Without that information, my best guess is you need to go into the library settings and make sure
it's set to open documents in client application.

  • Console Application crashes on SharePoint 2010 Production

    Hi
I have a console application to migrate pdf files from database to SharePoint document library. It works great on my development machine and test server(one web/app server and one database server). However when I run this on our production enviornment web1
server (there are 2 web server and 1 app server), it crashes after taking input of SharePoint URL. Is this because production has hosted site collection name and single url. what url I need to type? so far I tried with actual web server name/hostedurlname/ipaddress
    and every scenario its crashing.
    Console.WriteLine("Enter SharePoint Site URL [Ex:
    http://sharepointtest ]");
                mySharePointURL = Console.ReadLine();
//As soon as I type the url and hit enter, console application crashes.
using (SPSite site = new SPSite(mySharePointURL))
                    using (SPWeb web = site.OpenWeb())
    Please help.

Actually its a seperate web application and the root site. I have tried adding the following urls:
    http://myapp.sharepoint.com  (hosted collection name)
http://myapp.sharepoint.com:7979 actual web application port but its configured and bind with root web 80
    http://webFrontend1:7979
    http://webFrontend2:7979
    http://localhost:7979
None of those url works and when I added try catch, I found out that url not found error. I am triying to get a GUID of the site and web and try to pass as a next step.
Thanks and let me know if you have any other approaches

    Hi Deepak,
Is this site collection url (e.g. FQDN url, or host named site collection url) different from other site collection?
If yes, please add the host named site collection in content source.
If not, and this site collection url are the same type/format with other site collection, please "reset index" if possible, and start a full crawl, let us know your resutls.

  • SharePoint 2010 SP2 hosted on Windows 2012 R2 NOT discovered by SCOM 2012 R2 + 2 SP MP's

What is the process to get SharePoint 2010 Management Packs loaded in System Center 2012 R2 to discover/monitor SharePoint 2010 SP2 (14.0.7121.5000) loaded on Windows 2012 R2?
    View of installed system:

The SharePoint 2010 Management Shell works fine!
    Result

    Peter,
I recommend to remove the Windows 2012 R2 server out of the farm and redeploy on W2008 R2.
This issue does not have an easy fix.
Summarizing, this appears to be the issue:
    1. Windows Management Framework 3.0 is integrated with Windows 2012 R2, which installs .NET 4 and Powershell 4.0. Not uninstallable.
    2. The Add-PSSnapin Microsoft.SharePoint.PowerShell is not supported with Powershell 4.0.
    3. The SCOM SP2010 MP puts a package on the defined farm server and when the agent launches the package, it calls Powershell (v4 in theis case) and errors out. The target W2012 server will have an Error 0 in the Operations Manager Event log. See below.
    Options:
    1. Work around maybe - Develop method for manual discovery (I'm working on that now).
    2. Rebuild SP2010 farm on Windows 2008 R2
    3. System Center Team - Write a new MP to down version Powershell (Powershell.exe -Version 2)
    4. Powershell Team - Write a SharePoint Snapin for Powershell 4

  • Move A Site From Moss 2007 To Sharepoint 2010

i have a site in sharepoint 2007 and i want to move it to a sharepoint 2010 server
not too sure what is the best method to do this ?
    thanks

I landed in this thread because I had a similar need to Muthuvel's. I am wanting to bring over just one subsite out of several.  My database in 2007 is around 7GB, and all I really want is just one site out of the many in it.
Ahmed's Ammar's steps were just right, and worked well for me in order to get the complete 7GB database over to SharePoint 2010, and later export\import that single site I was looking for.
For Muthuvel, here are my updated steps, starting with Ahmed's text (sorry for plagiarizing!).  Steps 7 and 9 are for subsites.  See links at the bottom for dealing with site collections.
    1) Find the content Database;  These are listed under Central Admin->Application Management->Site Collection List
    2) Backup the content database. Just doing a backup in SQL Server Management studio.
    3) Restore content database to the new server, I mean the DB server for your SP2010
Copy the BAK file to new server. Create an empty DB in Management Studio, restore from backup, you may need to change an option in the "options" tab of the restore dialog to get it to work. (Overwrite db).
    4) Create a new Web App on SharePoint 2010
For Step 4, I created a new Web App, choosing to create it with a suggested port number, such as 4072.  This was a temporary web application that I ended up deleting later.
    5) Remove Content Database from the new web app.
I didn't find that you neeed to remove the Content Database first.  You can add the content database by Central Admin or by STSADM, or by Powershell.
Central Admin would be Application Management > Web Applications > Manage Content DAtabases > Set the web application to your newly created web app > Add Content Database > specify the name of the database you just restored
    STSADM is as Ahmed gave:
Now use STSADM to add restored DB to this web app
c:\program files\common files\microsoft shared\web server extentions\14\bin on new server is where you can find the STSADM.
run this command from there. Which will upgrade the content db to 2010?
stsadm -o addcontentdb -url http://yourwebapp:port -databasename yourcontentdb -databaseserver yoursqlserver
Powershell would be this command below.  Be sure to run the "SharePoint 2010 Management Powershell" console, found under Programs\SharePoint 2010 Products.  If you run just regular powershell this won't work.
    Mount-SPContentDatabase "MyDatabase" -DatabaseServer "MyServer" -WebApplication
    http://sitename:port
    6) Run ISSRESET from command prompt
I'm not sure this was necessary, but I did it anyway.
NOW, the rest of the part about getting that subsite you want.
    7)  Export the subsite.  I did this with Powershell.
    Export-SPWeb http://sitename:port/sites/subsitename –Path "subsitename.cmp"
    8)  Create a new site for you to import this subsite into, in the Web Application where you want it to go.  This would be done with the regular Site Actions > New Site command.  You can also do it from Powershell, but that requires knowing
site templates by name, something I'm just learning myself.  The other thing here is that you have to create the subsite using the same template as the site you just exported.  So if that was a Team site, be sure to use a team site when you create
    this new area.
    9)  Import the subsite to where you want it to land permanently. Here I'm saying port 80 because that's the requirement Muthuvel mentioned.
    Import-SPWeb http://sitename:80 –Path "subsitename.cmp" -Overwrite
    10) Even after things say they are done on the server, the site may take an extra minute or two to come up when testing from a client.  Give it a little time. Once it comes up, somehow I found a way to change the visual appearance from the old SharePoint
2007 to SharePoint 2010, but now that I flipped that switch, I can't find the option again.  So I'm sorry that I am not documenting that here.
    11) Delete that temporary web app you created in step 4.  Again you can do this with Central Admin or Powershell.  Here's the Central Admin way:
Central Admin would be Application Management > Web Applications > Manage Web Applications, land on the temporary web app, click Delete.  Choose Yes to deleting the content database and the IIS web site.
GROAN!! I'm sorry, I just wrote all this out and realized Muthuvel was asking about a site collection, not a subsite.  Then for Steps 7 and 9 you'd want to use
    Backup-SPSite
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee748617.aspx
    and
    Restore-SPSite
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee748655.aspx
Good luck, hope someone else finds this as useful as I did!

  • Rename State Service Database in SharePoint 2010

As the title says, I want to rename/change database for State Service Application.
I did some experiments wit it as suggested by others but I think I somehow managed to broken my service.
I can SharePoint Products Configuration again and I got another database State_Service_GUID which I didnt want at the first place.
    I followed the steps on
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff851878.aspx#State and it failed as well, and I am in middle of no where.
I am even not sure if my service is properly running or not. I can see it in Service Applications page in Central Administration as Started but I cannot select it and use ribbon operations on it.

    Hi ,
    Rename the Service Database
Go to SQL Management Studio and rename the database
Open SQL Management Studio. You may have to go to your SQL Server to do this.
Attach to the instance that host SharePoint
    Find your database
Right click on the database name and choose Rename
Delete the GUID off the end of the name or make the name whatever you want then press Enter. SQL Database is now renamed. Notice I changed all of the spaces to underscores. Why? Because DBAs hate spaces in names more than they hate GUIDs and I am a nice
    guy.
Now go to your SharePoint Server and use PowerShell to set the database name.
Click Start > All Programs > Microsoft SharePoint 2010 Products > SharePoint 2010 Management Shell. If you have UAC enabled be sure to run it as Administrator.
Then run the following line. Be sure to replace your info for service app and database name.
Now you can celebrate you have saved the world another GUID. I have a master post here with all of the anti GUID posts linked in one place. Right here.
