Editing Mixing 720 50p mts h264 and 1080 50i  xdcam mxf

Hi all, I'm going to shoot an event this weekend on XDCAM 1080 50i, I will probably need some B roll and and I was thinking to add my lil handycam and test it in 720 50p...
I plan to output mainly on a blu ray, but it will definitely end up on youtube and vimeo as well.
The handycam is able to 1080 50i as well so am I looking for trouble trying this?
Thanks

Output to BDR is usually 1920 x 1080i/25. I would use both the lil camera and the XDCAM at 1080i/25 to avoid scaling and frame blending. Uprezzing is always a bad idea, it costs too much quality, downrezzing makes no sense if both cameras support 1080i/25 and shooting P makes no sense since BDR only supports i/25 and not p/25.

  • FCP settings for HDCAM 1080 @ 50i

    Hello people,
This is my 1st (of many I'm sure) posts..
I have a bunch of tapes shot on a HDCAM 750 and 1080/50i. I've poppped them into FCP at DVCPRO50 for the rough cut.
What settings do I use witin FCP to capture the HDCAM uncompressed.. I have a Kona LHe and 3Tb of storage on a fibre channel, 8 gig RAM so we're ready to cook.. just not sure which setting to go.. I'm confused with the 50i thing.. there's not an 'easy setup' for this.. Is there?
    Help me people!

    Welcome to the forums.
Yes, I have the Kona LH as well and I note that there isn't an Easy Setup for 1080i50. 1080i25, but not 50. Could it be as simple as duplicating a 1080i25 setup, and changing the frame rate from 25 to 50? I dunno...that is an AWEFULLY high rate. There isn't a 1080i60 either. The highest it goes is 29.97. And when I deliver 1080 masters, they are 23.98.
I only mention the duplicating option as I see that Decklink HD codecs offer that option.
What happens if you capture at uncompressed 10-bit HD 1080i25?

  • Mixing AVCHD 50p and 25p

    Hi everybody !
I just shot an interview with two cameras.
One was a DSLR 60D, and the other an AVCHD Panasonic AF-101. There was also a sound recorder getting the sound directly from microphones.
The thing is the AF-101 was a rented camera and the operator wasn't used to work with it, so it might have been a set-up problem.
Now we need to edit this footage on Premiere Pro, and that's where the problem begins
When i import the AF101 footage into Premiere, he tells me that it is 1080/25p (like it's supposed to be from what we wanted), but in VLC i can see that it is 1080/50p, or more precisely :
    "Codec : H264 - MPEG-4AVC (Part 10) (h264)
    Planar 4:2:0 YUV
    Image Frequency : 50"
When i mix both footage - 60D 1080/25p and the supposely AF101 1080/25p - the footage from the Panasonic is out of sync !
The sound recorder and the 60D mix perfectly together, but the AF101 is definitely a bit in slow-motion, and Premiere keep teeling me that's 25p.
When i try to convert it from 50p to 25p, it doesn't change anything (as Premiere already interpreted the footage in 25p).
I'm reaching my knowledge's limit with this and still the Panasonic footage is the most important for us.
If there a way at least to put the independant sounds recordings into 50p that would be great.
I hope someone can provide some hints to resolve this
    Thanks everybody !!
    Chris

    huh?
I'm using lots of 720/60p, which works like charme - 'cause it within the AVCHD v1 specs.
1080/p or material beyond >24mbps bitrate are in AVCHD v2 specs.
FCPX imports only AVCHD v1. but, when you manually convert 1080/50p/60p into proRes, it works with such material .... common recommendation is CLIPWRAP.

  • 1080/50i or 720/50p

    Hi!
I just got a new camera from my new work, a Panasonic AG-AC160
I have to record a short commercial tomorrow, but I dont know if I should record in 1080/50i or 720/50p?
the commercial will be be a One shot movie, and I will have to use some few fast forward effects and slow motion effects, when i edit it.
The commercial will be uploadet on a website and a youtube channel.
but can anyone tell me pros and cons? (1080/50i vs. 720/50p)
    what will You record in?
    Thanks
    /Dennis

If the commercial will NOT be shown on TV, shoot 720p and you'll get superb slomo.
Interlaced is primarily for TV (not internet).

  • I've been giving HD videos in MTS format and convert the for editing in FCE.  Looks good in the program, but when I export the finished film, quality had been noticeable diminished.  Is there any way to prevent FCE from lowering the output quality?

    Hello -
I've been sent HD footage in MTS format and converted it to Mp4 for editing in FCE.  It looks good in FCE but when I export the movie, the quality is noticably diminished.   Is there any way I can prevent FCE from lowering the quality on export?
    Thanks.

    >I use Foxreal video converter for Mac to convert the MTS using the Apple intermediate codec setting and the problem is that I don't get image, just audio
My thought would be to NOT use Foxreal video converter.
    Use MPEG Streamclip or Clipwrap.

  • 1080 50i disadvantages and editing problems?

I am about to buy cosumer camera Sony HDR CX350ve. It records in AVCHD 1080 50i footage. I am in big doubt because of this interlaced scaning and all of discussions about film-like or no film like look. What it is all about?
How Premiere CS4 deals with 50i during editing? When i will see artifacts? What is the best way to convert to progressive scanining?
What i will see on 1080p LCD? Is this interlaced scaning really worse than progressive?
I really like this camera but I don't want to regret buying it while editing footage. Please help.

Nothing worth mentioning. But let's be practical, many users only edit and export interlaced material, you have no way to export to 25P on BRD or DVD, PC players like VLC or MPC automatically correct interlaced material for display on a progressive monitor, just as flatscreen TV's do.
Jeff's tutorial is great in NTSC land, but not in PAL land to introduce that "Filmic / Stuttering" look. The software solution is the best approach in NTSC land to create the stutter, not here. IMO even a software solution is only a band-aid, and does interpolate between fields to create a frame which will always entail mathematical inaccuracies and errors. If the information is not there, you can't create the information in post. So it will by definition look softer than the original. Converting i material to P will work reasonably nice on static shots, but not on fast moving shots or fast pans.

  • 720/50P to SD

I'm shooting 720/50P on a Sony EX3 and I need to downconvert to SD DV after editing on FCP. Can anyone give me settings to get the best quality. Or even advise me if 720/50P is my best option for shooting if it's going to end up on SD?

Sorry, I wrote that it a bit of a rush and wasn't very clear. Let me try again. I shoot on an EX3. The broadcaster I work for operates in Standard Definition. Currently I use the camera it self to downconvert my edited packages via SDI. I would like to see if Compressor can give me a result closer to the quality of the HD original, especially on projects which are not constrained so much by time. I am constrained to outputting to DV or DVCPRO25 via firewire. I do not want a 'progressive' picture effect.
Could anybody suggest a workflow with which I might achieve this?

  • Questions about H264 and MPEG2 settings in CS5

I am working on a composition based on the setting 1920x1080 (1.00) 29.97fps. I encounter problems with the H264 and MPEG2 formats at the output module:
    - If I choose MPEG2 as the format, a Settings Mismatch sign appears. It reads,'Output file will be resized to 720x576 (1.46PAR) to meet format constraints. Warnings: Frame rates will be adjusted from 29.97 fps to 25 fps to meet format constraints.' But when I export the same composition to Premiere, I am able to render it out as a MPEG2 1920x1080 (1.00) 29.97fps using Media Decoder without adjusting the setting at all. So what is the MPEG2 default format setting? Is it different from software to software even within Adobe? Can I change that in AE?
    - If I choose H264 as the format, I am able to export the file in the same setting as the composition. But I wouldn't be able to play the file on Windows Media Player when done. The note says it may require codec. Does it mean other people will have troubles playing the file also? Did I do something wrong with the setting?

Thank you for both of your responses. I wasn't actually mixing up H264 and MPEG2 formats. I was just trying to export a composition as either one of them. But the H264 file is not playable. Still dunno why. And the MPEG2 format sets the file as 720x576. If I re-size the file, the frame rate is still not right; and I don't know how to adjust that. Combined with the audio problem I 'd mentioned on the other post, now I always have to use Premiere to import the composition, render it, and then export it to Media Decoder.

  • PLEASE help with 24p editing mixed with 29.97

Hello--I am a newbie to all of this 24p editing. I shot a zombie movie last summer and have a MESS with the footage. Half was shot in 24p advanced mode on the Panasonic AGDVX100a with a 16:9 anamorphic lens, and half shot at 4:3, 29.97 with a Sony DVX2100.
I realize I need to "conform all of this footage".
Can I stay on a 29.97 timeline? I heard that dropping 24p adv footage onto a 29.97 timeline results in a "jittery" picture once output to TV.
Should I edit on a 24p timeline, and convert the 29.97 footage?
It seems that when I drop my 24p advanced footage into Premiere (CS4), on a 24p timeline--the fouth frame is identical to the fifth. Does this mean that pulldown removal is not happening correctly? How do I fix this?
Even if I do figure out how to edit on a 24p timeline, when I do my final render, what should my output file be? should I try a 24p DVD?
Also...This is an EFFECTS HEAVY film. So I need to do an edit in Premier, then render it and bring it into After Effects, do the effects, and do another render...then I will take that render back into Premier. Will this work? What render setting should I use? How will the pulldown be affected, if at all?
ANY HELP IS GREATLY APPRECIATED!!! I have scoured the net, but have not come across the right answers yet...please help!!!!

    Hello orion,
Your HDR-CX550V records HD as MPEG4 AVC/H.264; and SD as MPEG2-PS. It appears to be an AVCHD camcorder (at least for HD video).
Storing your +original footage+ could be done at least two ways:
1 - record to removable flash media and save the Memory Sticks as your originals, as you formerly saved your tapes. (If I did my math correctly, you could fit up to about 6.5 hrs. HD video on a 16GB memory stick depending on the recording mode you select.)
2 - copy the +entire directory structure+ from the flash media to a hard drive; this is important, you need the entire directory & files from the root folder on down, not just the AVCHD folder or just the .mts files. Test this before committing to it as your archiving method.
The third way (and what I would probably do myself):
3 - Log & Transfer into FCE and then archive the resulting QuickTime .mov files to a hard drive. (Admittedly, this is technically not the 'original' footage because it has been transcoded to Apple Intermediate Codec; however the quality is excellent and should be almost indistinguishable from the original AVCHD video.)
If you convert the video files yourself (you mentioned iSkysoft), you need to convert to QuickTime/Apple Intermediate Codec to use the video in FCE.
FCP can handle 5.1 audio however the state of the art of these camcorders does not lend itself to direct import or conversion from the camcorder. Even the pros need dedicated 5.1 audio hardware. Frankly, 5.1 audio on these consumer camcorders is more a marketing gimmick than something actually useful at present.
The filenames 00001.MTS, 00002.MTS etc. are assigned by your camcorder and there is nothing you can do to change that. (Although you could rename the QT .mov files after you Log & Transfer from your camcorder).
    - hoping this helps ...

  • .mts files and compressor settings

    Hello,
I need some help using final cut pro!
I recorded some footage on a Canon HG20 camera onto an SD card.
I then transferred the footage with showed up as .mts files from the SD card onto my macbook.
My first question is why can't I open .mts files with imovie or final cut pro?
I used an app called Video Converter to convert my footage into .mp4 files. But I realise that these are compressed files and may not be ideal for editing.
My second question is what is the best file type to edit in final cut pro?
So I imported these .mp4 files into Final Cut Pro 7. The compressor for these media files in the browser is H.264 and I realise that my sequence settings have to match these compressor settings. But I have two problems with this -
    1. I want to eventually export the video to YouTube, and editing .mp4 files with a compressor H.264 is going to eventually be poor quality. Right? Can I change my media compressor settings?
    2. The most important and puzzling problem is that even though my compressor settings match, everytime I drop something on the timeline or edit anything on the timeline it shows that I have to render it - so basically I'm rendering my footage continuously to see the playback. What am I missing - what am I doing wrong!?
Do I have to do something first in Easy Setup or changel my sequence compressor to Apple Pro Res?
All I want to do is edit something in final cut pro and upload it on to youtube with reasonably good quality - any help with this would be very much appreciated as I've been scowering the internet for answers and nothing seems to solve my problem!
    Thank you in advance,
    julia19

    Hi Russ,
thank you so much I'm doing a log and transfer now and it seems to be working! I think my initial problem was that I was trying to transfer only the .mts files when I should have been transferring everything from the SD card.
I can't believe it was that simple!
Are there any specific settings I have to do in Easy Setup in order to later export to YouTube?
    Thank you again!

  • Canon HF20: backup the MTS files (and later convert), or import in AIC?

    Camcorder: Canon HF20. FCE 4.01.
I have filmed some clips with the 7 mbps setting. The file size of the mts files is fairly small, but when importing it to FCE (or iMovie) the filesize is increased 10 times (to about 60 mbps) I found the answer in this post: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=10900327&#10900327 ,
I want to save all my video clips to my external drive, and I am tempted to just copy the mts files to a folder, and then later convert them when I want to edit the footage. Would this be possible, or do I have to import them in FCE now?
Is it possible to copy the mts files back to the camcorder at a later time (the entire file structure - the folder is called BDMV) and then import it in FCE?

Yeah, make sure you copy the entire folder structure from the highest level and DONT delete ANY files (like I did!)
I spent the entire night last night and the last week trying to get compatibility of .MTS files shot on a Canon HFS11 into FCE 4 (FCE 4.0.1 to be exact).
I shot 3 months worth of footage on the HFS11 and would daily dump the AVCHD folders into date folders (ie 060110, 070110, etc etc) on an external HDD.
Since I had all the .MTS files off the camera I didnt know if I could use Log and Transfer to bring them into FCE but it is possible. Like other forums many people suggested you had to have the folders exactly like they were on the camera. This is true, unless of course you have deleted some files or if any become corrupt then the structure isnt exactly the same. For me I had deleted any junk files using a fast .MTS viewer (called a windows 7 machine!) without realising it was going to affect the 'import' process in FCE.
    SOLUTION
I found that the files in the CLIPINF folder (.CLI files) were matched to the .MTS files in the STREAM folder. So if you delete any .MTS files I guess Log and Transfer reads the INDEX.BDM file or the .CLI files and says hang on, something is different. So I went through my .CLI files and found the names missing from the .MTS files and duplicated a colour bar clip I made and renamed it to the missing files. Viola, and FCE 4 could 'import' them.

  • MTS Files and workflow

    Hi,
I'm a recreational user of Final Cut Pro. I've recently bought a new cam corder and wish to get the most from my footage in terms of quality and the best from my system.
    Panasonic TM700
Mac Book Pro 2.5ghz running Snow Leopard
    Nvidia GeForce 9600M GT 512mb
    FCP 6.0.6
I currently store all media on a network drive (QNAP Nas with Samsung Spinpoint F1 SATA-300 - 7200 rpm). The current network is wireless so I find I need to transfer files to the local drive or an external hard drive and connect to the MBP by Firewire.
So with the new Camcorder - What is the best way to import the files into FCP? I have tried using the log and transfer function, but this imports files that are 10x the original size. I tried Clipwrap2, but again this still adds another 15-20% on the file size (which I find strange going by the description of what clipwrap does).
Has anyone had experience of MTS files and found a good workflow for importing, storing and editing?
    Thanks
    Zig

You will need ClipWrap2. It will be able to make sense of the mts files.
The recommended workflow goes something like this:
    1. copy the ENTIRE contents of the flash media to a folder on your hard drive.
    2. make a backup copy to a second (archive) hard drive
3a. Convert the files. If you have recorded files that are not natively supported or have screwed up the moving of the files from the cards to the hard drive, use the appropriate transcoding software. Then import the files into FCP.
3b. If you have recorded a format that is natively supported in FCP, importing the files will be done using Log and Transfer.
    4. Edit and be happy.
    Regards,

  • Can FCExpress deal with 720 50p..

    Hey guys,
just wondering can FCExpress deal with 720 50p. I have a Panasonic AG-HMC 41 (40) and when shooting with 720 50p I'm not seeing any great difference especially when I try to slow down the footage. It looks as if its not capturing the full 50 fps. I really want great looking slow motion footage.
I use iMovie to import all my footage.
If I upgrade to FCPro will that solve my problem?
I love FCExpress but also use slow motion a lot and would happily up grade to FCPro if it means I could get better looking Slow Mo.
    Thank in advance..

Thank you so much for that.
Looks like I'll just have to save and splash out on FCPro.
I'm guessing by the way you say 'reconform the frame rate' to make movies slow mo' it's not as simple as hitting 'Apple key & J' and selecting your required speed.

  • How can mode the Projekt to 720/ 50P

    My Prject is 1920x1080 25p , when i cange to 720/50p is only 720 / 25p possible.

You can't change the frame rate of a project if there are already clips in it. Make a new project in the specs you want, then copy and paste the content from the old project into the new.

    As a Test:
Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'
Import a few pics into this new, blank library. Is the Problem repeated there?
