EEM for learned MAC

                   Hi there,
Is there any easy way to create an EEM script so if one any switch interface learned MAC address reached to 4 then it will send an email as alert.
Any idea? i am trying to work out but cant find any basic EER script any where.
Thanks

See this thread:
https://supportforums.cisco.com/thread/2169067?tstart=0
The script there looks at the DHCP pool, but it could be easily modified to look at "show mac address-table" for each port instead.  For each port, if the number of lines in the output exceeds your threshold, send an email for that port.

  • Help? Learning coding for iOS/Mac

    Hello,
I want to start learning coding, primarily for iOS and Mac applications. I know my way around computers pretty well, but as of now, I have essentially zero knowledge of coding. My question is, how should I start? What language do I learn first? Is iOS or Mac OS a better starting point? etc.
Any help and advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

What do you want to build for? That's the first question you should ask.
Building for iOS essentially requires you to learn Obj-C, which hopefully you know is a superset of C. Building for iOS also requires knowledge of other tools, such as Cocoa, a framework built by Apple. Additionally, you should be familiar or be prepared to be familiar with XCode, Apple's IDE. You'll also need to review guidelines for publishing to the iOS App Store.
Building for Mac can be done in many, many ways. You can distribute Mac applications yourself in almost any language you want, such as Java, C, C#, Ruby, Python, etc. All have IDE's (IIRC) that work with OS X. If you want to build for the Mac App Store, (IIRC) most apps are in Obj-C, and have stringent requirements like that of the iOS App Store.
Keep in mind, I've barely scratched the surface here. There's a lot more to development than just langauges, frameworks, classes, IDE's, etc. While both iOS and Mac have their own program (at $99/year), you may find that you may not want anything to do with coding, or may want to build for both.
You mention that you don't have any coding experience. If I were you, I would take very gradual steps, to see if this is something you want to get serious about. There's nothing wrong with diving right into a langauge like C, but you may feel overwhelmed. I plan on building iOS apps myself, but I didn't dive right in. I started learning Javascript two years ago (as well as HTML and CSS), and progressed to a bit of Java and Python. This summer, I plan on learning PHP and RegEx. So, two years in, and I don't feel ready to build with C just yet. However, people learn differently, so heck, you might even start building in 3 months.
TL;DR, give it a shot. You have nothing to lose. If you want to dive right in, start with C. Being verbose with that language will give you the upper hand when it comes to Obj-C.

I just got Pages for my iPad.  I am learning Mac. I spent hours on a document last night that has no content this morning.  The document is there but it is completely blank.  Did I accidentally delete the content?  If so, how?  Is there any way to retrieve this content?

I'm not sure what happned either but If you are doing this via iTunes, iTunes should have backed up the iPad first. It can take a good bit of time when you update with iTunes on your computer because iTunes downloads and installs the entire iOS all over again. If you are running iOS 5 on the iPad, and you will be now, you can update OTA via WiFi in the future and the process takes far less time since you will only be downloading an incremental update.
If you are syncing on a regular basis with iTunes, you should have a recent backup. In the worst case scenario, you should be able to restore from the backup. And as stated aboce, you can download all apps again and virtually all purchased content from iTunes (if you live in the U.S.) and you can always sync your iTunes library back to the iPad.
Let the update finish and see where you are then. Come back if you need help.

  • How can I buy an new Superdrive for my mac pro without having to take my computer to a apple store?????

I have a Mac Pro and my optical drive is not working anymore. Thus, I went to the online store to buy another one.
Surprisingly, the only one I found was the macbook air (external) superdive.
I did not buy it online on that day. However, I went to the Apple Retail Store in Sydney to buy another external hard drive and asked to one of the costumer supports in red if the "macbook air" superdrive would work in any mac. The answer: YES!!! So, I got one. When I was paying the products I asked to the other "red mac guy" the same question... Again, the answer was YES!!!
So... Do these costumer support guys have any training. It is written in the box that requires a macbook air... That's why I asked for two different guys!!! Why did they say YES???
Ok! Lets not put the fault on the red guys... So I ask Apple:
Why apple does not make a external superdrive for pros?? Or one that works for all macs!!
    or simply
Why can't we buy internal superdrives anymore? Neither the online store or the retail store sell them anymore!!!
How do I solve my problem? I have to waste my time, making an appointment and taking my Mac Pro to a apple store and wait untill all iphone user in the line learn how to send their photos to their facebook??
It is really strange how apple is leaving the pro costumers behind to become a ipad and iphone industry!
Let do not forget that mac only is where it is now becouse of the pros who made it name and did not leave it die.

You know you don't have to buy a replacement dvd drive from apple.  For example, take a look at OWC's selection.
You don't say what year your mac pro is so I use a 2008 as an example.  On that page click the little picture that shows a 2008 mac pro.  That will take you to this page.  And there's an example of a Lite-On drive.
In addition, on the right side of that page are links to instructional videos on how to add the drive to your machine.  Click, for example, Optical, med (medium) and you will see how straight forward it is to change the optical drive.

  • Where can I find information about creative/artistic software for my Mac?

I write (mostly children's plays) so I need to find out exactly what kinds of software are available to me for scripts, film, published material, etc. I am planning to rewrite a script which has been produced on stage several times into an animated film if I can learn how.  I need some software to help me with this project.
I also want software with various capabilities for needlework, quilting, crochet, sewing, pattern design, etc.
For years I have seen artists and craftspersons on tv demonstrating work they have designed on their own computers and then transferred to an art medium and though I have looked, I am evidently not checking in the right places to find said software.
Any help, suggestions or websites you give will certainly be appreciated.
    Thanks
    Carole

For writing you can use anything, but for the most bang for no money, I suggest the free LibreOffice suit.
It has word processing, spreadsheet, drawing and much more, all free. It's cross platform so anyone who downloads the free software can read it your files. Mac, PC or Linux, doesn't matter.

Well depends upon what sort of animation, 3D animation is very complex and requires a powerful machine and even racks of machines to do the final rendering.
2D simple animation I don't know of anything off hand, I'm guessing you need something that you can make changes in the frames and play it over and over until you get the desired result, moving things around and creating your story line. etc.
You'll need music and sound creation tools to create your clips, iMovie/GarageBand can likely help bring those two together, but doesn't do the animation, you need something else for that.

Ok your likely looking at the Adobe Creative Suite, with Photoshop, Illustrator and perhaps even InDesign for laying out any printed material like manuals and booklets.
Illustrator has exteremly fine controls of detailed artwork, create patterns that you can duplicate and so forth.

Well like any artist they use the computer to assist them to get their artwork done, but then need to use various manual techniques and sometimes very expensive machines you never see to transfer that medium to their end product.
Computers can't do everything, they are tools that can perform certain functions, it takes the human and training to transfer that to a finished piece.
A education in the graphics art field may assist you there, reading how to go about achieving your goals and see how a computer can help or not help.
You can check over at Cnet.com or MacUpdate.com for creative Mac software, lots ot choose from.

  • Can an iMac be used as a monitor for a Mac Pro?

    Hi all,
I'm getting nowhere looking in the search, so I'm hoping someone can clear something up for me:
is it possible to use an iMac as a display for a Mac Pro?
I am beginning to think I'd better get a Mac Pro, but I already have an iMac, for which I've been researching getting external storage so I can do Final Cut Studio editing and back up of it all... as someone suggested, might be better in the long run to just get it all in the Mac Pro, and have the option and simplicity to upgrade as and when... but then there's the need for a display for the Mac Pro, which does whack the price up... but if I could use this iMac, what a beautiful monitor...
I thought someone said that Final Cut would not allow another computer to be attached though... is that the case, anyone know?
Thanks for any knowledge and help, much appreciated... I'm learning to not rush into anything, as you learn more the whole picture seems to change!
    Cheers, Syd

The current 27-inch iMac can. Other iMac models can't outside of a VNC setup or ScreenRecycler; all such solutions require a standalone monitor for setup and troubleshooting.

  • Switch learning mac addresses

In a video that I watched a few days ago someone explained a basic process of booting up a switch and how a switch learns mac addresses. He said something that I would like to discuss. I know... it is not important but want to clarify :)
    PC1---SW1----PC2
PC1 wants to send sth to PC2. In the video it was said:
'a frame arrives at SW1 and SW1 learns the mac address of pc1 but it does not know the mac address of pc2 so it will flood this frame to all ports'
My uderstanding is that it all starts with an arp message: pc1 does not know the mac address and sends an arp and it will allow the switch to learn both mac addresses: pc1 and pc2. I am too lazy to do it in wireshark but did that in PT and that's what I saw as well. After the arp - switch learnt both macs and did not flood the frame.
Am I correct? I know it is not important but... ;-)

It may be possible that there was some aspect of the switch environment in the video that would change the behavior (perhaps something like a long timer for the ARP cache in the PC and a short MAC ageing timer on the switch). But in general you are correct. PC1 would send an ARP request as a broadcast, the switch would learn the MAC of PC1 and forward the ARP request. When PC2 sends its response to the ARP request the switch would learn the MAC of PC2 and forward the ARP response. So the switch should have both MAC addresses when data traffic begins to flow.

Hi Christina, belated welcome to Apple Discussions if nobody said it already.
I've had some experiences with these new flash memory recording camcorders, and I'll give you a quick rundown of what I've learned. Many of them (JVC, Panasonic, etc.) tend to record in a .MOD file format, which is non-standard, proprietary, and unrecognizable by most software. I thought Canon was usually a little more standards-compliant, but it appears they also use this .MOD format in your specific camera model. There are likely a couple ways we can get around this though!
In order to play the files, you will likely need to change their file format (.MOD) to .AVI manually. You'll have to locate the files on your Mac, and then manually change the file names so that the file extension (after the period) is .AVI
At that point, a video player application such as http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-macosx.html>VLC should play the files fine!
You should be able to transfer new video files from the camera to the Macbook Pro with no problems as well. Just plug in the camera to the computer via USB, and also make sure the camera is plugged in to charge. Once it's plugged in, open iMovie (came with the MBP, in the Applications folder) and the MBP should take care of the rest.
Let me know if you have any success with any of this!

    Yes. You can.
I've learned something. New. This must be recently changed. That last time I clicked on a Link I though was a dmg file and turned out it was and exe file my Macs wouldn't allow me to do so. But haven't tried recently everytime and exe file comes up I cancel. I gues I am used to the time everytime a Virus or some other nasty was downloaded it was packaged in and exe file and Macs owuldn't allow it. I suppose with the INtel guts now they can no longer refuse to download.

What is the best way to learn Mac OS X 10.7 Lion in depth?
I have updated to lion a few months ago, found my way around just by playing with it, but now I would like to get serious and learn pretty much all it can do. But wondering if I should get one of those lion tutorial apps, or just an old fashion book. I guess practical exercises would help. Oh, and with Mountain Lion coming this summer, should I just wait?

Thank you for your suggestions Softwater. Your book suggestion led me to this other one:
Mac OS X Lion: The Missing Manual [Paperback]
    David Pogue (Author)
The reviews were pretty good, and I think it's a good starting point, for my current level, but will consider your suggestion later on.
Well, if I don't upgrade to Mountain Lion when it comes out later this year. Otherwise I may have to wait for a Mountain Lion: The Missing Manual

  • Surround Sound For the Mac?

Hello. I use my PC for games, I have a Creative Labs Xi-Fi card and 7.1 surround sound speakers there. I'd like the same quality on my Mac for movies, but especially for WoW. Is there a sound card or other surround sound solution for the Mac?

Hello, frustrated!! I empathize with you totally!! I own one Dell and 4 Mac's (for my creative work) including one top of the line MacPro, and I, too, have the 5.1 (and beyond!) sound problem issue. I agree with you that it is terrible that, in my case, after spending $12,000 for this bleeding edge technology, it only comes with stereo capability! When I used my older G-4, I was extremely happy for years with the Revolution 7.1 Surround Sound Card, by a great company called M-Audio. This card worked seamlessly right out of the box.....the software was so easy to use, too. So, naturally I was really shocked and bummed out a few months ago, when I learned from their tech support and sales team there, that no, this card will NOT work on the MacPro.
From the M-Audio website: Re: Apple Intel Mac Pro & DualCore PowerMac G5 desktop compatibility:
The new Intel based Mac Pro desktop computers, as well as the latest generation DualCore PowerMac G5's, have PCI-Express slots, and not PCI or PCI-X (Like the Delta/Revolution Series cards). Not only are the data rates on PCI-Express different from PCI/PCI-X, but PCI-Express uses serial data transfers versus PCI/PCI-X transferring its data in a parallel fashion. For these reasons, a PCI-Express type motherboard connector (or "slot") is physically different from a PCI or PCI-X type connector. Therefore a PCI-Express adapter will not physically fit in a PCI or PCI-X slot, and vice-versa. This is true regardless of the adapter card's manufacturer.
All of our current USB and FireWire interfaces are compatible with the new Intel Based Mac Pro and late model DualCore PowerMac G5 computers.
    Please use their link: http://www.m-audio.com/index.php?do=products.family&ID=recording
Of course, I prefer the efficient elegance of an internal card, rather than an external box providing more desktop clutter, but at least this is a solution for us! Best of luck to you!!

Actually, iMovie/iDVD should create excellent DVDs! They're terrific programs -- and Final Cut Express is also excellent, if a bit hard to learn.
I've been seguing from using Premiere Elements on my PC to using it on my iMac, and I love it on Mac! Premiere Elements 9 runs very well on my computer running Snow Leopard.
I'd definitely recommend downloading the trial and giving it a test drive.
