Efficient method to read a Setup file ? Config VIs ?

Hello All:
I am developing a project with a large setup file which is linked to a global variable in my code. Each section in the setup file maps to a cluster in my global variable.
Typically I use config VIs to read and modify the setup file from my code. Of late I've been using the openG config VIs since they are easy to work with clusters. Since speed is a major concern, is there an efficient way to do this OR an alternative to config VIs ?
Kudos always welcome for helpful posts

The real answer to this problem is to use reference objects - objects you can get to anywhere that contain arbitrary data that can be easily modified.  I can recommend two - LV2 globals and single element queues.  Both are discussed, with code samples, in this thread.  I have also attached a short and amusing tutorial on large program development which addresses many of the issues you are seeing (LV 7.1 and 7.0 formats).
For complex configuration files, you can't beat one of the free generic hierarchical file systems.  I usually use HDF5, but there are others.  You can find a LabVIEW API for an older version of HDF5 here.  Note that the learning curve is fairly steep and the VIs are not multi-thread safe, so don't try to use them in two places at once.  If you do, you will get errors at best and corrupt your file at worst.
Let us know if you have any more problems.

    What is the best and most efficient way to read a .xls File and create a pipe-delimited .csv File?
    Thanks in advance for your review and am hopeful for a reply.

    You should have no trouble doing this in SSIS. Simply add a data flow with connection managers to an existing .xls file (excel connection manager) and a new .csv file (flat file). Add a source to the xls and destination to the csv, and set the destination
    csv parameter "delay validation" to true. Use an expression to define the name of the new .csv file.
    In the flat file connection manager, set the column delimiter to the pipe character.

  • Quickest method for reading and writing files

    Hi
    I need help regarding file operations.(Reading and Writing). Currently I am using BufferedReader and BufferedWriter to read and write files. But the files (XML) are very huge files(from 30 -50 mb). This is slowing the application to a great extent. Is there any other approach to perform the above mentioned operations on XML files in a fast manner.
    Thank You

  • Method to Read or Open files without going in to GOS-- View Attachments.

    Hi Experts,
    I am looking for a mechanism to read or open a file which is stored in SAP Database ,rather going to SAP transaction (like Nomination O4NSN) --> GOS --> view attachment.
    Can anyone please give some suggestions on this.

    Thanks Ravindra,
    But we are not using DMS scenario for attaching the documents. What we are doing
    We go to a SAP tcode like O4nsn for TSW Nominations> then GOS> create attachment.
    Now the sap attachment is created and stored in sap database. We can retrieve attached documents by going into the same tcode and GOS--> View attachmenmts. Since these documents are strored in sap databse i want to know some other mechanism to retrieve these documents.
    Appreciate your help on this.

  • Labview 8 crashes when using Read Labview Measurement File

    Hi All,
    I am a new user for Labview. I installed Labview 8.0 from the CD (evaluation copy). I was just testing the sample code provided by NI. I opened the "Load from File and Display" example and I was trying to open the properties for the Read Labview Measurement File component when Labview crashed. I tried it a couple of times and everytime it happens the same way (when I double click the component or right click on it).
    I am using Windows XP with all the updates done. In the Windows crash report, the application version is 8.0.0.4005.
    Other problem I encountered is a missing component on the Input Palette (no DAQ Assistant present) and the Instrument I/O Assistant raises the error "Measurement & Automation Explorer or the Instrument I/O Assistant is not installed correctly. Please install these from the Labview Driver CD". For the last problem, I will try to run the Labview Driver CD, once I get it. But I am not sure if the DAQ Assistant will show up then or not.
    Any ideas?
    Regards,
    Nick

    Hello Nick,
    While it is not my area of expertise, I would expect the DAQ Assistant would appear after installing the driver CD as you said you would be trying.
    What caught my attention was the crash.  The easiest way to resolve the crash is to delete the instance of the Read LabVIEW Measurement File on the diagram and place a new one from the Express Input palette (now called "Read From Measurement File").  In that situation, I would expect just pressing OK to accept the default configuration should work.  The crash occurs in certain circumstances when the Read / Write Measurement File Express VIs are dropped from a previous version of LabVIEW and then their config page is opened in 8.0.x.  This issue should be resolved in a future release, sorry for the inconvenience.

  • How to create a method for reading a file

    i tried to make it as static method for reading a file and

    is this code correct?

    I created a class you might want to look at. I come from a world of C and love fgets() and other FILE stream functions. I created a class that uses the Java I/O buts to the calling application behaves like fgets and such. The block of code where I do the calling in the calling program even looks like C. In my class I capture almost all errors and set error buffers to the errors. The calling program looks at the return to see if it succedded or errored.
    BuffIO new = BuffIO.fopen("fiilename", "r");
    String s;
    if((s = new.fgets()) == null)
    System.err.println("error reading file: " + new.ferror());

  • "Read from Binary File" and efficiency

    For the first time I have tried using Read from Binary File on sizable data files, and I'm seeing some real performance problems. To prevent possible data loss, I write data as I receive them from DAQ, 10 times per second. What I write is a 2-D array of double, 1000 data points x 2-4 channels. When reading in the file, I wish I could read it as a 3-D array, all at once. That doesn't seem supported, so I repeatedly do reads of 2-D array, and use a shift register with Build Array to assemble the 3-D array that I really need. But it's incredibly slow! It seems that I can only read a few hundred of these 2-D items per second.
    It also occurred to me that the Build Array being used in a shift register to keep adding on to the array, could be a quadratic-time operation depending on how it is implemented. Continually and repeatedly allocating bigger and bigger chunks of memory, and copying the growing array at every step.
    So I'm looking for suggestions on how to efficiently store, efficiently read, and efficiently reassemble my data into the 3-D array that I need. Perhaps I could simplify life if I had  "write raw data" and "read raw data" operations that write and read only the numbers and no metadata.then I could write the file and read it back in any size chunks I please -- and read it with other programs besides. But I don't see them in the menus.
    Suggestions?
    Ken
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    I quote the detailed help from Read from Binary File:
    data type sets the type of data the function uses to read from
    the binary file. The function interprets the data starting at the current file
    position to be count instances of data type.
    If the type is an array, string, or cluster containing an array or string, the
    function assumes that each instance of that data type contains size information.
    If an instance does not include size information, the function misinterprets the
    data. If LabVIEW determines that the data does not match the type, it sets data
    to the default for the specified type and returns an error.
    So I see how I could write data without any array metadata by turning off "prepend array or string size information", but I don't see any way to read it back in such bare form. If I did, I'd have to tell it how long an array to read, and I don't see where to do that. If I could overcome this, I could indeed read in much larger chunks.
    I'll try the auto-indexing tunnel anyway. I didn't tell you the whole truth, the 3-D array is actually further sliced up based on metadata that I carry, and ends up as a 4-D array of "runs". But I can do that after the fact instead of trying to do it with shift registers as I'm reading.
    Thanks,
    Ken

  • Why no simple method for reading text files

    I'd like to know, after all this time why there is no simple method of reading ext files into a string.
    Yes, yes, I know all about buffered readers, (it took me long enough to figure them out) but they are cumbersome and seem to change every release (how many file methods have been deprecated...)
    Here's what I'm looking for:
    file.open();
    file.read(String);
    file.close();
    No single character at a time, no loop - the whole file into a single string in one shot. If buffers are used, i want it hidden.
    Perl, PHP, VB, C# all have this. Even Java has it when you write to a file.
    So why not on read?
    Yes, buffered streams are very elegant, but for what most programmers want to do, they are overkill and annoying.

    Just Dennis Ritchie's little joke.
    Do you have a better reason for wanting the feature
    other than that some other languages have it?Yes. It would save me time and help dozens of new programmers who continually ask this question in this and other forums. It is in other languages because people use it and want it - clearly Jarkata saw the need. If you don't like the idea, then I won't argue the point. We agree to disagree.
    Also did you have an answer for my question?in java.io.file you can do the following: (i've used it, it works) Granted, you still have to use the buffered output streams, which in my opinion should be abstracted for a simple text read and write.
    BufferedWriter outputStream = new BufferedWriter(new FileWriter(fileNewPath));
    outputStream.write(fileContent);
    outputStream.close();

  • How to read the extended-cache-config.xml file. in C++ API

    I want to create my own XML config file and define the config values in that, so that C++ Client (using Coherence C++ API) application can access the config files.
    Also how to get the instance of configuration values which Coherence client has read,
    i.e.
    TangosolCoherenceOverride=$PATH/examples/config/tangosol-coherence-override.xml
    TangosolCoherenceCacheconfig=$PATH/examples/config/extend-cache-config.xml
    How to get the instance of this XMLDocument ? and read values from it.
    Thanks,
    Naveen

    Hi,
    You can get the cache-config that was read by getting it from the ConfigurableCacheFatory (which you can get from the CacheFactory) via getConfig(). See:
    http://download.oracle.com/otn_hosted_doc/coherence/352CPP/classcoherence_1_1net_1_1_cache_factory.html
    http://download.oracle.com/otn_hosted_doc/coherence/352CPP/classcoherence_1_1net_1_1_configurable_cache_factory.html
    There is no way to get the actual XmlDocument object from the cluster that is read for the cluster-config (though you could open the same path yourself).
    thanks,

    This question has been answered before, please search the forums in future.
    You could do something like this, it probably not the most efficient though.
    If you don't need to do it in code then the native2ascii does this conversion see: http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4.2/docs/tooldocs/windows/native2ascii.html
            public static void convert(String vsFile) throws IOException
              File f = new File(vsFile);
              FileReader fr = new FileReader(f);
              char[] buf;
              int bytesRead = 0;
              int startAt = 0;
              String content = "";
              do
                   buf = new char[512];
                   bytesRead = fr.read(buf, 0, 512);
                   startAt += bytesRead;
                   String tmp = new String(buf);
                   content += tmp;
              while (bytesRead == 512);
              FileOutputStream fout = new FileOutputStream(f);
              OutputStreamWriter out = new OutputStreamWriter(fout, "UTF-8");
              out.write(content.trim());
              out.flush();
              out.close();

  • After downloading iTunes, the setup file simply does nothing...

    I got a new iPod touch yesterday and when I tried to update my iTunes (which was 7.6) the update would not work. After trying to update multiple times I finally decided to uninstall iTunes so that I could re-install it (and hopefully have it work. This, I soon learned was a big mistake. The download of the iTunes setup file to my desktop worked fine, but when I tried to actually install iTunes, nothing happened. I can click the file, a window pops up saying that the program is from an unknown publisher and asks me if I want to run it anyway. I click yes, and nothing happens. When I try to install iTunes from the apple website, it won't work either. I then get a pop up saying that the program is bot valid and will not install. I have tried everything reccomended on the troubleshooting section and no change. I have windows XP, which is up to date, has vbscript installed and have tried everything that I can think of. Can anyone help me??
    please and thank you.

    I am afraid I don't know the answer to this. The problem seems to crop up a fair bit, but I haven't seen anyone post a solution.
    There is an experiment I have been wanting to try with someone if you are willing. I have been wondering if this could be anything to do with a problem with cryptographic dlls.
    Could you try working through *Method 4* in the following link:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/822798
    It is possible that simple re-registering the dlls might help if the process goes through without any error messages.
    But it is also a test to check for missing dlls - make a careful note of any error messages that may occur.
