EJB or PHP

Hi all
I am helping to implement and build a student managment system for the education institution I work for which must be accessibel over the net .And I am having a hard time trying to convince senior mangement to switch from PHP to using the JAVA EJBs. I have prepared arguments such as.
1. All the business logic being executed in the web tier.
2. PHP is not fully object orientated.
3. More load on the webserver as more users use the system.
I have found a good website but it only matches Servlets against PHP so if any one could please help me to promote the Java EJB technology then ideas or thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks Kodee

J2EE has several advantages over PHP, Perl, and other scripting languages
1. utilize the built in transaction support of the j2ee container
2. Most J2EE servers are clusterable
3. distribute components onto seperate servers to gain better performance
4. Utilize built in security model
5. Java is completely object oriented
6. Clean seperation of business logic and presentation logic
7. Run on any platform
8. With CMP, no work required to switch databases
9. Wide selection of IDEs & J2EE servers, both commercial and open source
10. Use asynch messaging for long running processes
11. Huge number of resources (online, books, and classes)
12. Build on one platform and deploy on another
13. UI can be built using any number of solutions: JSP, XML/XSLT, Servlets, and 3rd party template engine
14. Persistence layer can be built in pure SQL, O/R Mapping tool, or entity beans.
15. Java is a strongly typed, compile language thus able to reduce syntax errors during development
The list goes on and on. Anyway, I hope this short list helps.

  • Struts checkboxes

    I am using struts and want to display a list of options for the user to select with checkboxes using the struts-el tags. The information on each option is stored in an object, name, age height weight and each of these objects is stored in an ArrayList called people which is placed in the session. Name of object person name of ArrayList people.
    I want the information to be displayed as a table(using a loop) each row holding the information on a different person with check boxes at the end of each row. The user can check as many as they want.
    I can get the people ArrayList from the session scope but dont know how to access the person objects within it or how display the data with in each person object

  • PHP using soap to call EJB

    Hello everybody,
    I've a problem to call a EJB form a PHP script.
    There is a Apache with PHP 5.2.0 and a SAP NetWeaver Application Server 7.10 / AS Java 7.10 running on the system.
    I wanted to use soap to call a method in an EJB. It's only a test EJB:
    [code]
    package beans;
    import javax.ejb.Stateless;
    import javax.jws.WebService;
    import javax.jws.WebMethod;
    @WebService(name="HelloWorldEARBean",serviceName="HelloWorldEARBeanService",targetNamespace="http://beans/",portName="HelloWorldEARBeanPort") @Stateless public class HelloWorldEARBean {
      @WebMethod public String sayHello(String testStr){
                return "Hello Mr. "+testStr;
      @WebMethod public String getReturn(String inputStr){
                return "the return value is"+inputStr;
    [/code]
    I tried it with the PEAR SOAP in the following script:
    [code]
    <?php
    require_once 'SOAP/Client.php';
    $wsdl_url     = 'http://localhost:50000/HelloWorldEARBeanService/HelloWorldEARBean?wsdl';
    $WSDL = new SOAP_WSDL($wsdl_url);
    $client = $WSDL->getProxy();
    $client->__trace(1);
    $options=array('namespace' => 'http://beans/',
      'style' => 'rpc',
      'soapaction' => 'sayHello');
    $NAME = "Bob";
    $parameters=array(
         'parameters', $NAME
    $result = $client->getReturn($parameters);
    echo "<pre>";
    print_r($params);
    echo "</pre>";
    echo "<h2>return</h2>";
    echo "<pre>";
    print_r($result);
    echo "</pre>";
    echo '<h2>Request</h2>';
    echo '<pre>' . htmlspecialchars($client->__getlastrequest(), ENT_QUOTES) . '</pre>';
    echo '<h2>Response</h2>';
    echo '<pre>' . htmlspecialchars($client->__getlastresponse(), ENT_QUOTES). '</pre>';
    ?>
    [/code]
    The AS distributes the following WSDL:

    I used different soap interfaces for PHP like nusoap and the integrated soap interface of PHP 5.
    Further I experimented with different parameters inside the function call
    that results in small differencies at the xml-request.
    Thanks.

    Hi
    I've solved the problem now. I just have to add
    @SOAPBinding(style=SOAPBinding.Style.RPC)
    in the EJB, that's all.
    Here is the complete code, ... maybe some other guys have this problem too, so I will post the working code:
    At first the EJB:
    package beans;
    import javax.ejb.Stateless;
    import javax.jws.WebParam;
    import javax.jws.WebService;
    import javax.jws.WebMethod;
    import javax.jws.soap.SOAPBinding;
    import beans.HelloWorldEARBean;
    @WebService(name="HelloWorldEARBean",serviceName="HelloWorldEARBeanService",targetNamespace="http://beans/",portName="HelloWorldEARBeanPort")
    @SOAPBinding(style=SOAPBinding.Style.RPC)
    @Stateless public class HelloWorldEARBean {
         @WebMethod public String sayHello(@WebParam(name="testStr") String testStr){
                return "Hello Mr. "+testStr;
    2. the local XML:
    <wsdl:definitions xmlns:wsdl="http://schemas.xmlsoap.org/wsdl/" targetNamespace="http://beans/" xmlns:tns="http://beans/">
      <wsdl:types>
        <xs:schema xmlns:xs="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema" version="1.0" targetNamespace="http://beans/">
          <xs:element name="sayHello" type="tns:sayHello"/>
          <xs:element name="sayHelloResponse" type="tns:sayHelloResponse"/>
          <xs:complexType name="sayHello">
              <xs:element name="testStr" type="xs:string" minOccurs="0"/>
          </xs:complexType>
          <xs:complexType name="sayHelloResponse">
              <xs:element name="return" type="xs:string" minOccurs="0"/>
          </xs:complexType>
        </xs:schema>
      </wsdl:types>
      <wsdl:message name="sayHelloIn">
        <wsdl:part name="parameters" element="tns:sayHello"/>
      </wsdl:message>
      <wsdl:message name="sayHelloOut">
        <wsdl:part name="sayHelloResponse" element="tns:sayHelloResponse"/>
      </wsdl:message>
      <wsdl:portType name="HelloWorldEARBean">
        <wsdl:operation name="sayHello" parameterOrder="parameters">
          <wsdl:input message="tns:sayHelloIn"/>
          <wsdl:output message="tns:sayHelloOut"/>
        </wsdl:operation>
      </wsdl:portType>
      <wsdl:binding name="HelloWorldEARBeanBinding" xmlns:soap="http://schemas.xmlsoap.org/wsdl/soap/" type="tns:HelloWorldEARBean">
        <soap:binding style="document" transport="http://schemas.xmlsoap.org/soap/http"/>
        <wsdl:operation name="sayHello">
          <soap:operation soapAction=""/>
          <wsdl:input>
            <soap:body parts="parameters" use="literal"/>
          </wsdl:input>
          <wsdl:output>
            <soap:body use="literal"/>
          </wsdl:output>
        </wsdl:operation>
      </wsdl:binding>
      <wsdl:service name="HelloWorldEARBeanService">
        <wsdl:port name="HelloWorldEARBeanPort" binding="tns:HelloWorldEARBeanBinding">

  • EJB+JSP versus PHP

    What is the advantage of using EJB+JSP for a web ticket selling application instead of using PHP?
    Can Java support more customer hits compare to PHP?
    Is EJB+JSP better than PHP? Why?

    I know both PHP and Java. PHP is a more rapid development tool than Java. Once you know it, it is just easier to make simple pages out of it vs Java. In some ways PHP is easier to develop in and in some ways it is harder.
    There is no real IDE for PHP. There are some tools for real time syntax checking (Komodo) and debugging, but they are not as mature as the pick of current Java IDE's.
    In reverse, there is never a need to restart a server when updating a php file unlike Java. This is not a problem with JSP's, but when you change servlets the server will unload all classes from memory and reload. This is a major pain if you are working on a production server.
    I have created a game clan site with many functions using PHP and an order processing section of someones web site. It is fine for smaller projects and is very fast to develop in, however PHP does not scale as well as Java. A large enterprise system is better suited to using Java.
    Also, PHP is a loosely typed language. This has many nuances that are different from a strongly typed language like java. OOP is definately not as powerful in PHP, as there is no private, protected and public typing of methods and fields. You can make classes and even extend classes, but it is poorly implimented IMO. I did all my PHP OOP style, but did not use any inheritance. The limitations of OOP principles is probably the most restrictive aspect of PHP that I can see.

  • EJB 3.0 Security with ACEGI and not with Container Managed Security

    Hi,
         Currently we are using EJB 2.0 in our project, We want to use EJB 3.0
         But for security we want to use Spring ACEGI Security and we dont want to use container managed security (No Portability, Difficult, )
         ACEGI supports Servlet/JSP security very well (I am able to call isUserInRole(), getUserPrincipal() because ACEGI implements by ServletRequestWrapper in a filter)
         But for EJB, it lacks this feature. (There is no standard EJB interceptor API as there is with servlets (using filters), so there's no generic way of modify in the EJB context for the invocation)
         Without using container managed security, Is there any way to propogate my security context from Servlet Layer to EJB Layer, So that I can use EJB Declartive security and getCallerPrincipal(), isCallerInRole() API.
         For more info please see this thread http://forum.springframework.org/showthread.php?t=26514
         Why dont you provide standard EJB interceptor API as there is with servlets (using filters), so there I am able add security identity to EJB context.
         I am eagerly waiting for the reply

    Reason: javax.naming.NameNotFoundException: jdbc not bound
    Although i am quite new to this as well i would say that there is a problem with your connection with the database.
    It seems it cannot connect to Mysql.
    have you download the mysql package library and imported it ?
    Also in your deploy folder in you Jboss
    have you altered the jdbc to connect to you database in your dataset ? ( i am not sure about mysql, but postgre reguired this)
    Most probably it would be the same in mysql.
    <connection-url>jdbc:postgresql://127.0.0.1:5432/Dissertation</connection-url>
    Not sure if this is what you reguire, i am new at this my self

  • Using EJB with Hibernate on Weblogic Server ADF platform

    Hi all,
    We use Jdeveloper 11.1.1.4 and WLS 10.3
    I tried to use Hibernate on my project according to this link well, EJB with Hibernate On Weblogic
    I wanto use Hibernate tool because toplink and eclipselink can not achieve the issue about generating update* ddl on schema, they can just only re-create the tables -not real update.
    Firstly i got the related jars from internet: http://www.2hotfile.com/di-LSBU.png
    cglib-2.2
    antlr-2.7.6
    commons-collections-3.1
    dom4j-1.6.1
    hibernate3
    hibernate-validator-4.1.0.Final
    javassist-3.9.0.GA
    jta-1.1
    slf4j-api-1.5.11
    slf4j-nop-1.5.11
    Then i added to model project as library dependencies: http://www.2hotfile.com/di-GMSZ.png
    configured persistence.xml as below:
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="windows-1252" ?>
    <persistence xmlns="http://java.sun.com/xml/ns/persistence"
    xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance"
    xsi:schemaLocation="http://java.sun.com/xml/ns/persistence http://java.sun.com/xml/ns/persistence/persistence_2_0.xsd"
    version="1.0">
    <persistence-unit name="VakkoEJBModel" transaction-type="RESOURCE_LOCAL">
    <provider>org.hibernate.ejb.HibernatePersistence</provider>
    <jta-data-source>jdbc/VakkoDS</jta-data-source>
    <properties>
    <property name="hibernate.jndi.url" value="t3://127.0.0.1:7001" />
    <property name="hibernate.connection.datasource" value="jdbc/VakkoDS" />
    <property name="hibernate.transaction.manager_lookup_class" value="org.hibernate.transaction.WeblogicTransactionManagerLookup" />
    <property name="hibernate.dialect" value="org.hibernate.dialect.Oracle10gDialect" />
    <property name="hibernate.hbm2ddl.auto" value="update" />
    <property name="hibernate.current_session_context_class" value="jta" />
    </properties>
    </persistence-unit>

    And i added to setDomainEnv.cmd that line:

    @REM This script is used to setup the needed environment to be able to start Weblogic Server in this domain.
    @REM
    @REM This script initializes the following variables before calling commEnv to set other variables:
    @REM
    @REM WL_HOME - The BEA home directory of your WebLogic installation.
    @REM JAVA_VM - The desired Java VM to use. You can set this environment variable before calling
    @REM this script to switch between Sun or BEA or just have the default be set.
    @REM JAVA_HOME - Location of the version of Java used to start WebLogic
    @REM Server. Depends directly on which JAVA_VM value is set by default or by the environment.
    @REM USER_MEM_ARGS - The variable to override the standard memory arguments
    @REM passed to java.
    @REM PRODUCTION_MODE - The variable that determines whether Weblogic Server is started in production mode.
    @REM DOMAIN_PRODUCTION_MODE
    @REM - The variable that determines whether the workshop related settings like the debugger,

    @REM This script is used to start WebLogic Server for this domain.
    @REM
    @REM To create your own start script for your domain, you can initialize the
    @REM environment by calling @USERDOMAINHOME\setDomainEnv.
    @REM
    @REM setDomainEnv initializes or calls commEnv to initialize the following variables:
    @REM
    @REM BEA_HOME - The BEA home directory of your WebLogic installation.
    @REM JAVA_HOME - Location of the version of Java used to start WebLogic
    @REM Server.
    @REM JAVA_VENDOR - Vendor of the JVM (i.e. BEA, HP, IBM, Sun, etc.)
    @REM PATH - JDK and WebLogic directories are added to system path.
    @REM WEBLOGIC_CLASSPATH
    @REM - Classpath needed to start WebLogic Server.
    @REM PATCH_CLASSPATH - Classpath used for patches
    @REM PATCH_LIBPATH - Library path used for patches
    @REM PATCH_PATH - Path used for patches
    @REM WEBLOGIC_EXTENSION_DIRS - Extension dirs for WebLogic classpath patch
    @REM JAVA_VM - The java arg specifying the VM to run. (i.e.
    @REM - server, -hotspot, etc.)
    @REM USER_MEM_ARGS - The variable to override the standard memory arguments
    @REM passed to java.
    @REM PRODUCTION_MODE - The variable that determines whether Weblogic Server is started in production mode.
    @REM DERBY_HOME - Derby home directory.
    @REM DERBY_CLASSPATH
    @REM - Classpath needed to start Derby.
    @REM
    @REM Other variables used in this script include:
    @REM SERVER_NAME - Name of the weblogic server.
    @REM JAVA_OPTIONS - Java command-line options for running the server. (These
    @REM will be tagged on to the end of the JAVA_VM and
    @REM MEM_ARGS)
    @REM CLASS_CACHE - Enable class caching of system classpath.

    Yet I see no evidence it is pre-loading my mdb ejbs. I have output statements and logging that would indicated an instance has actually loaded, and I am seeing none of it. So, what magic trick does it take to get the mdb to acutally use it's <steady-pool-size> setting in the descriptor file?
    Also, how can you tell what ejbs and how many instances are loaded? I see nothing in the Console for this. Also, how can you monitor a topic/queue to see if anything is getting sent?

    Does the ext directory have the php_oci8.dll? In the original steps the PHP dir is renamed. In the given php.in the extension_dir looks like it has been updated correctly. Since PHP distributes php_oci8.dll by default I reckon there would be a very good chance that the problem was somewhere else. Since this is an old thread I don't think we'll get much value from speculation.

  • Sql query using EJB

    I'm trying to adapt my sql query i use for php in order to return zipcodes using a radial search.
    This is my query that i use in php:
    $strSql2 = "SELECT * FROM Zips where (DEGREES(ACOS(SIN(RADIANS(" . $this->lat . ")) * SIN(RADIANS(lat)) + COS(RADIANS(" . $this->lat . ")) * COS(RADIANS(lat)) * COS(RADIANS(" . $this->lon . " - lon)))) * 69.090909) <= " . $distance;I need to adapt this to work for my finder method in my jaws.xml file, here is what i have so far, i know it doesn't work, especially with the < sign in there ;)
             <finder>
               <name>findByDistance</name>
               <query>(DEGREES(ACOS(SIN(RADIANS(" . $this->lat . ")) * SIN(RADIANS(lat)) + COS(RADIANS(" . $this->lat . ")) * COS(RADIANS(lat)) * COS(RADIANS(" . $this->lon . " -lon)))) * 69.090909) <= " . $distance</query>
               <order>zipcode ASC</order>
             </finder>          Thanks for your help guys.

    Hello,
    If the ">" or "<" are creating the problem then u can use the following approach. Here i am explaing it with an example:
    EJB QL statements are declared in XML deployment descriptors. XML uses the greater than (>) and less than (<) characters as delimiters for tags, so using these symbols in the EJB QL statements will cause parsing errors unless CDATA sections are used. For example, the following EJB QL statement causes a parsing error, because the XML parser cannot distinguish the use of the > symbol from a delimiter to a XML tag:
    <query>
    <query-method>
    <method-name>findWithPaymentGreaterThan</method-name>
    <method-params>java.lang.Double</method-params>
    </query-method>
    <ejb-ql>
    SELECT OBJECT( r ) FROM Reservation r
    WHERE r.amountPaid > ?1
    </ejb-ql>
    </query>
    To avoid this problem, the EJB QL statement should be placed in a CDATA section:
    <query>
    <query-method>
    <method-name>findWithPaymentGreaterThan</method-name>
    <method-params>java.lang.Double</method-params>
    </query-method>
    <ejb-ql>
    <![CDATA[
    SELECT OBJECT( r ) FROM Reservation r
    WHERE r.amountPaid > 300.00
    ]]>
    </ejb-ql>
    </query>
    The CDATA section takes the form <![CDATA[ literal-text ]]>. When an XML processor encounters a CDATA section it doesnt attempt to parse the contents enclosed by the CDATA section, instead the parser treats it as literal text .

  • Java - PHP communication

    Hi,
    I'm quite new to EJB3 and going to build web application using (probably) EJB3 and Struts 2. My problem is, that I need to bound some parts of my new business logic with this older PHP website. I just need to call some simple Java methods (e.g. searching in db - pass on one or two parameters and get a result) from this PHP website. I've done some research and it looks like I should use Web services. There is a lot of materials for this topic in the web, but somewhere I've read, that web services are overkill for such the simple scenario. Is here any easier way to call Java business logic from PHP. Thank you very much for your answer.
    Edited by: esembaJ on 13.10.2008 22:53

    As I understood, your "application" consists of two parts: web site written on php and EJB+Struts.
    If so, you can easily make HTTP requests from php to your Struts actions.
    Your actions can make response in JSON (JavaScript Object Notation) with the help of json-plugin.
    With these approach you beat two things: you can make actions which can be easily used asynchronously (JSON helps to do this) also they can be used by any application that can parse JSON response.
    You don't need to dig into WS. Your case is very simple because of powerful java web-framework. WS will make your solution too complicated. Also you'll have troubles with WS on php-side.
    Once, I've had to send some data to java-WS from php4. I've tried to realize it in many ways, but finally I've made simple HTTP request with manually formed XML-body (it was SOAP).

  • Time for PHP?

    In case you haven't heard of PHP, it's only the webs most popular server side language: http://newsforge.com/newsforge/02/06/11/011243.shtml?tid=5
    It's the first Open Source project to come from behind and overtake the bespoke Microsoft solution: ASP.
    It's a great lanaguage which even has limited support for writing in Java: http://www.php.net/manual/en/ref.java.php
    What it's lacking is a solid development framework with tools for building web services. It is fully capable though, have excellent support for XML-RPC and some Open Source libraries in development for SOAP.
    So how about recognising it before we see a PHP.NET and provide support for it with the J2EE framework?
    Most PHP coders are application developers as opposed to frameworkers. But provide them an integrated tool within J2EE to build scalable PHP apps, in particular web services, and they'll no doubt be won over.
    That could make J2EE the framework for the Internet.

    You can use scriptlets in .JSP pages to acheive similar things.
    J2EE discourages this because it doesn't cleanly separate the presentation and business logic. The J2EE way to do this is with JSP / custom tags for presentation and EJB's for the business logic.
    A clean separation is hard to achieve nicely and you realise the benefits mostly on big multi-person projects.
    The reason PHP is popular is because it's easy to use for small projects and most websites are small operations.

    A document that presents an intitial feature and use case list for the early milestones of the Eclipse EJB 3.0 Object/Relational Mapping project has been posted to the project newsgroup (news://news.eclipse.org/eclipse.technology.ejb-orm). It also demonstrates a set of user interface components for editing EJB 3.0 Entities. The document covers the basics and is designed to illustrate the concept. It is in no way comprehensive. For example, it doesn't thoroughly cover the editing of ORM xml descriptors although this is an important requirement for the project. ORM xml support will be detailed in coming revisions, and slated for future milestones.
    The purpose of this document is to invite comment on the approach. If you are interested in EJB 3.0 Entity support in Eclipse please give the doc a look over and post your feedback to the EJB 3.0 Object-Relational Mapping Project newsgroup.

    Project Overview:
    The goal of this project is to add comprehensive support to the Eclipse Project for the definition and editing of Object-Relational (O/R) mappings for EJB 3.0 Entity Beans. EJB 3.0 O/R mapping support will focus on minimizing the complexity of mapping by providing creation and automated initial mapping wizards, and programming assistance such as dynamic problem identification. The implementation will be extensible so third party vendors can add to its functionality.

  • Java techlogies versus PHP

    Hello,
    we will have big web project. And now I must choise techlogies. All projects were create with PHP.
    Now I think change technology, because I think PHP will small for this project. This project can have more that 1000 users one time. This site will have chat system, and users will often make requests.
    Can I say, what Java will be better decision in this project?
    Can you give examples where Java better in big projects?
    I think about servlets and EJB.
    I will be grateful for answers.

    PHP or Java?
    The basic difference between Java and PHP is that with Java you can have actual object model underneath - n-tier application. That comes handfull when you handle a lot of users and various datasources.
    Another thing is that with use of object models like EJB or COM+, .NET you can use transaction framework already built into the system or object pooling (Here maybe I can mention connection pooling - in PHP I think each page opens its own connection (In java the same connection can be used by many clients)). I won't mention the separation od data and business logic in this level.
    In general you also can test the whole application, which I'm not sure if you can with PHP.
