EL or RT expressions for JSP taglibs

I have a simple question
We all know that there are two ways to implement a JSP page. either RT expressions or expression language (EL). I have done plenty of research and I am comfortable at creating custom JSP taglibs that support both RT and EL. What I want to know is which if them is used more commonly?
Its useless to right 2 seperated libs, since you can pass variables from EL to RT and vice versa, so I want to have only one tag library, but I dont know how I should implement it EL or RT.
What is used more often and why? What is the advantages of using one over the other. Thank you!!!

RT was the original way; it required scriptlets, which everyone hates.
EL is the new way; it helps eliminate scriptlets, which everyone loves.
EL is the method of choice; even moreso when JSP 2.0 is finalized, it allows them to be used more freely (not just in tags)

  • JSP Custom Tag and Expressions for parameters

    This should be an easy question. I am trying to use an expression for a
              parameter to a jsp or custom jsp tag. When I hard code a value for the
              parameter, the tag works fine but when I use the expression, the expression
              gets evaluated but the tag itself does not resulting in the tag being shown
              in my output.
              For example:
              <jsp:forward page="www.slashdot.org"/> works
              <jsp:forward page="<%=request.getParameter("DESTINATION")%>"/>
              places the following into my html output
              <jsp:forward page="www.slashdot.org"/>
              Can someone please tell me what I am doing wrong or at least offer some
              debugging hints?
              Thanks in advance!

    I have experienced almost this exact same problem, but with a custom
              tag. And I did make sure that my attribute specified
              <rtexprvalue>true</rtexprvalue>. Here is the weird part.
              If I do the following JSP code everything works fine:
              <% String foo = request.getParameter("bar"); %>
              <mytag:custom param="<%= foo %>"/>
              But if I do this:
              <mytag:custom param="<%= request.getParameter("bar") %>"/>
              I get the following in my html output:
              <mytag:custom param="whatever bar is set to in the request"/>
              It appears that the JSP container only does a one pass evaluation.
              Is this the spec of is this a bug?

  • JSP Taglib for RSS

    Just wondering if anyone else is having better luck - been working thru:
    http://developer.java.sun.com/developer/technicalArticles/javaserverpages/rss_utilities/
    Each time I try and parse an RSS file I get the following trace:
    <rss>
    <channel>
    <title>
    </title>
    <link>
    </link>
    <description>
    </description>
    </channel>
    <item>

    at org.apache.crimson.parser.Parser2.maybeElement(Parser2.java:1477)
    ... rest of stack trace.
    This is tried with 5 or 6 different RSS feeds (0.91 and 2.0) and with both crimson and the latest xerces parsers (stacktrace is the same apart from the parser specific parts - it's always in com.sun.cnpi.rss.handlers.DocumentHandler.startElement(DocumentHandler.java:98)
    It appears to be trying to call a method based on the fact that it has seen an items tag (which it hasn't - it's an item tag).
    The JSP:
    <%@ taglib uri="/rssutils.tld" prefix="rss" %>
    <rss:feed
    url="path-to-feed"
    feedId="intranetRT"/>
    <h2>"><rss:channelTitle feedId="intranetRT"/></a></h2>
    <rss:forEachItem feedId="intranetRT">
    <h3><a href="<rss:itemLink feedId="intranetRT"/>"><rss:itemTitle feedId="intranetRT"/></a></h3>
    <div class="item">
    <p><rss:itemDescription feedId="intranetRT"/></p>
    </div>
    </rss:forEachItem>
    Maybe of interest - all tried RSS streams work fine for various other RSS readers and return valid from 2 different validators.
    Hints anyone?

    I try using this tag library, and I get the following on my page:
    java.lang.ClassNotFoundException: com.cj.rss.objVariable
    as the root cause for this excemption:
    org.apache.jasper.JasperException: Failed to load or instantiate TagExtraInfo class: com.cj.rss.objVariable
    Do I have a bad "path" set up somewhere? Here's my code:
    <%@ taglib uri="/WEB-INF/lib/taglib.tld" prefix="c" %>
    <html>
    <head><title>Java Feed</title></head>
    <body>
    <%-- <jsp:useBean id="beanInstanceName" scope="session" class="beanPackage.BeanClassName" /> --%>
    <%-- <jsp:getProperty name="beanInstanceName" property="propertyName" /> --%>
    <c:setFeed url="http://www2.theserverside.com/rss/theserverside-1.0.rdf" id="A"/>
    <p>Title:<c:getChannelTitle feedId="A"/>
    <p>Description:<c:getChannelDescription feedId="A"/>
    <c:forEachItem feedId="A">
    Link:<%=itemLink%>
    Title:<%=itemTitle%>
    Description:<%=itemDescription%>
    </c:forEachItem>
    </body>
    </html>
    It's pretty simple code, and I made sure that the library file (jar) and .tld file were in the /WEB-INF/lib directory, off of the "context" directory or "docroot". I guess I would have gotten a different error if they weren't there.
    Any thoughts as to why my server is having problems loading the object:
    com.cj.rss.objVariable
    It is in my rsstag.jar file. I confirmed it by opening it with WinZip. Here's the reference to it in the rssrag.tld file:
    <tag>
    <name>setFeed</name>
    <tagclass>com.cj.rss.setFeedTag</tagclass>
    <teiclass>com.cj.rss.objVariable</teiclass>
    <bodycontent>JSP</bodycontent>
    <info>parses rss feed</info>
    Any information would be greatly appreciated.

    Well, putting all that Java code into a JSP was a bad idea in the first place, just on general design principles. But you've done it in such a way that the result of compiling the JSP is malformed Java code. Frankly I would just throw it away and put the Java code into a servlet or some other Java class, where it belongs.
    But if you're really working in a place where nobody has learned anything since 2003, and you're forced to support that old junk, then I would point out that the error occurs before the place which generates this line:
    import java.util.*;You only need to look at two of the thousand lines of code you posted.

  • Jsp taglibs in include files not detected, throws errors, no code insight

    I have a jsp which is included in all the other jsp. it looks something like this
    taglibs.jsp
    <%@ taglib uri="http://java.sun.com/jsp/jstl/core" prefix="c" %>
    <%@ taglib uri="http://java.sun.com/jsp/jstl/fmt" prefix="fmt" %>
    <%@ taglib uri="http://www.springframework.org/tags" prefix="spring" %>
    <%@ taglib prefix="form" uri="http://www.springframework.org/tags/form" %>
    test.jsp
    <%@ include file="/jsp/menu/taglibs.jsp"%>
    <html>
         <head>
              <title>Tours</title>
         </head>
         <body>
    <form:form commandName="testCommand">
                   <form:hidden path="tour.firstname" id="tour.firstname" />
    and so on.
    I am having 2 problems
    1. the jsp editor show errors all over the place saying
    element path not expected
    element commandName not expected etc.
    2. no code insights.
    but if i include the taglib def in test.jsp it dosn't show any error and also provides code insights. but seldom do people include all taglibs in all jsps.
    is there a way for Jdeveloper to show code insights in jsp pages which includes a jsp or like xml schemas could be added at some place(tools-pref-xml schemas) and when used anywhere, would provide code insights.

    am not sure, try with this
    <jsp:include   .../>

  • MultiRowEdt-JBO-35000: Cant resolve spel expression for attribute {0}in{1}

    Hi All,
    i'm in the process of completing the mutli row edit tutorial that I downloaded from this site. I'm using 10.1.2, adf bc and jsp's.
    I've competed the tutorial and am getting an error JBO-35000: Cant resolve spel expression for attribute {0} in {1} .
    I've checked that my attribute names are the same as the VO and have created a BeanInfo class to handle the mapping of these attributes. All appears as it should, so not sure where to go from here.
    Any ideas would be gratefully received.
    Thanks in advance,

  • Sytax highlighiting for Jsp Dyn Pages for portal development.

    Hey,
    I am doing JSP with the htmlb taglib for portals. When I edit a jsp page in the Developer Studio, I expect syntax highlighting. This is what I see in the documentation for jsp editing as well - you know where the keywords are highlighted.
    Sytax highlighiting for jsp in Developer Studio for portal development.
    http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw04s/helpdata/en/ce/e0a341354ca309e10000000a155106/content.htm
    OutputSuccess.jsp, OutputSuccessText.jsp are the two jsp's that are syntax highlighted on this page.
    In my Developer Studio this is not the case. Is a JSP editor and its highlighting not part of the Developer Studio. If it is, how do I get it to work.
    I also know that given the right taglib's, the editor also gives autocomplete for taglibs with its settings. I am hoping to speed up my development with this.
    Right now I am using a text editor for this. There are a couple of jsp plugin's such as Exadel or Lomboz which I can integrate if a jsp syntax editor is not there in the Developer Studio. I just wanted to know the right way to go about this.
    Thank you for your help.
    Sumit.

    Never mind. I was in the preview mode.

  • Regular expressions using jsp

    Hello Techies,
    I am having a text area inside a jsp file. When ever the end user gives input it must be submitted to the server.
    The real problem is when the end user gives special characters and double-quotes in this text area, jsp is preforming in abnormal way.
    Can u guys tell me how to resolve this issue. i.e how to solve regular expressions in jsp.
    Even though the end user gives special characters or double quotes we should take only the content.
    Looking forward for u reply.
    regards,
    Ramu

    The real problem is when the end user gives special characters and double-quotes in this text area, jsp is preforming in abnormal way.What do you mean with "jsp is preforming in abnormal way" ?
    A arbitrary JSP does not care about double-quotes.
    Can u guys tell me how to resolve this issue. i.e how to solve regular expressions in jsp.Usually the same way as you do it in a poj class.
    Nobody here knows how your JSP looks like and who handles the request when the form is submited or even who generates the model of the data displayed by your JSP.
    You have to provide us with more details.

Build was succesfull as well and also - deployment was without errors - but - above mentioned error appeared during the automatic compilation of jsp pages/servlet when newly deployed jsps are first accessed from remote browser.
    So - is it possible, please, to receive some advice - what to do further? I feel that my invoice.jsp page can be with errors, - however - the original welcomeJSF.jsp should be working without errors even the erronwous JFS jsp page is added to web application.
    Thans for any adice or hint in advance!!!

    OK - I have made 'clean and build main project' from NB menu and the deployed the resulting *.war and the error messages have disappeared... So - it seems to be bug...

    Yes, change
    <tagclass>testTL</tagclass>
    to
    <tagclass>yourPackage.testTL</tagclass> and of course recompile class with package declaration and put into package.

  • Search strategy for JSP tag files

    Hello everyone,
    I've been trying to find a solution to this for some time, but couldn't find a clean one. Maybe somewhere here has any ideas for a solution...
    Consider a JSP taglib which is composed of hundreds of .tag files. The library is referenced in JSP using the "*tagdir*" option of the taglib directive, which simply points to /WEB-INF/tags/ (where the .tag files are located).
    Our standard server software distribution includes that tag library, as well as JSP pages that make up the server's web user interface. Those JSP pages use the taglib extensively.
    Now, we want to be able to distribute upgrades to the JSP pages and the tablib, but allow customers to easily customize some tag files without worring about loosing their changes if they apply a future upgrade.
    If it were possible for JSP pages to declare two overlapping taglib directives (same prefix) pointing to two different tagdirs, it would allow us to place our hundreds of .tag files in one "standard" directory, and allow customers to place customized .tag files in another "customized" directory. That way JSP files would always use the same prefix for our tags, but the actual .tag file inserted would be coming either from the customers's "customized" tagdir or from our "standard" tagdir (depending if they chose to override a tag with a customized version or not).
    Is this possible? How do people deal with taglib customization and maintenance issues?
    Thank you!

    Thanks for the reply!
    We use the ClickOnce smart client deployment to the user's machine and we would not want to touch/change anything on the user's machine. So, we can't rely on an environment variable being set.
    It almost seems that the DB Support Team has to not only talk to the Tech Support team and arrange for deploying the right version of the tnsnames.ora file on their users machines, but also talk to the App Deployment Team and provide the most recent version of this file to be used for deployment. So I guess if this file is checked in a code repository, the DB Support team can notify the Tech Support Team and the App Deployment Team to refresh respectively all user machines and application deployment configuration files.
    Alternatively, as one of the app deployment instructions of App Deployment team can be: "check out the most recent version of tnsnames.ora from the repository before deploying the application".
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks.
    Regards,
    gkk1969

    All import-statements where of the same kind. I had to place trhe classfiles

  • I18n jsp taglib, hot update

    Hi
    I'm investigating use of the jsp taglib i18n that comes with Personalization
    server.
    Is there any way of updating the .properties files so that the changes come
    thru reliably without restarting the server?
    A kind of reloadCheckSecs=0 like for jsp files would be good.
    Does such a functionality exist?
    Has anyone implemented such a functionality?
    Alternatively, is the code for the taglib available?
    Regards
    Alex

    If you need more information, don't know what I mean or whatever, please ask.
    I realy need this but don't know how to do...
