Electronic signature options

When setting up a new electronic signature do I choose:
New PKCS#12 digital ID file (which sounds really confusing)
or
Windows certificate store
What is the difference & what is an easy way to explain this to people who will be signing it why they are choosing a particular option?
And how safe & secure is this electronic signature with adobe?  Is there any information from adobe stating its security gurantee?

Hi Johnny,
This can get complicate, not because it is that hard, but because there are a lot of little pieces when it comes to grasping digital signatures. With that in mind, please don't hesitate to tell me if what I write isn't clear.
First, a bit of what is a digital ID (the thing you use to create a digital signature)? It consists of three pieces; 1) a public key, 2) the corresponding private key, and 3) certificate data such as your name and the validity period. When you create a digital ID it has to be protected because it contains your private key. How it's protected depends on where you store the digital ID.
This brings us to your initial question. When you create a digital ID Acrobat has to know where you want to store it. The Windows Certificate Store (and "store" in this case means a storage location, not a place you buy something from) is managed by the Windows operating system and the concept is the private key is protected by your Windows logon password. Windows does allow you to set a security level where you may be prompted by Windows for  password every time you want to access the private key, or you could just go with if I've logged in that's good enough.
The other place that Acrobat will allow you to save the digital ID is in a file. Like any other file, it's just a piece of data that gets saved to your hard drive (or some network drive) and it has a file extension (in this case .PFX). The big difference between a .PFX file and say a .TXT file is the .PFX  file has to be password protected (again, because it contains your private key and you don't want anybody else having access to that). Thus, as part of the file creation process Acrobat will ask you what password you want to use. The crux of the matter is the .PFX file is itself being encrypted using password security.
As an aside, there are other places that Acrobat can access (read) a digital ID, but these are the only two place that it can save (write) a digital ID. The digital ID could reside in the Mac Keychain (its the Macintosh equvilent of the Windows Certificate Store), or on a smart card or USB token or even a specialized server, all of which Acrobat can access.
Finally, you asked about where to get more info. A good place to stat is http://www.adobe.com/security/digsig.html where you can start to read up on the benefits of digital signatures.

  • Multiple Electronic Signatures using Signature PAD

    Hello Experts,
We have a requirement where we need to capture the electronic signature on thee PDF form at different time. This means I fill the PDF form get the 1st electronic signature using signature PAD and then saved the form. I open the same form and then take the 2nd signature. When we are taking the 2nd signature on the saved form it's making the form and signature invalid.
Please let me know if there's a restriction by Adobe PDF such that you can't accept the signature once it's signed and saved.
    Thanks, Ritesh

Yes, that's an e-signature. An option if you need to set up multiple e-signatures is to use stamps. They can be flattened individually, which converts them to regular page contents. The Acrobat help has more information on using stamps and you can use the following free JavaScript-based utility to flatten them after they're applied if you want: http://www.uvsar.com/projects/acrobat/flattener/

  • I cannot place an electronic signature in a document with form fields?!

I have Acrobat Pro installed on a windows 7 and windows 8.1 machine. On both I have lost the ability to place an electronic signature (Draw my signature) and only have the option for a digital signature. The problem is remedied if I print to pdf but then I lose the form fields.
I'm an idiot and so are the people that I need to send this to. I just want to easily fill the necessary fields out, draw my signature and forward it to the next guy to do the same so that it can be printed and turned in. Digital signatures are severe overkill for this (and i'm not going to be able to teach everyone how to create one) and I need to know how to re-enable the ability to electronically sign and keep the form fields.

re: "Digital signatures are severe overkill for this"
Yep, I discovered that as well.
I rolled my own "signature" for a client...I just added a 3 character "initials" field and a "Certify" button.
The initials act as the signature and once they hit the certify button, all form fields are set to read-only....via custom javascript.
The only problem is that I am unable to SAVE the document via javascript because of Acrobat trusted functions....
    which I don't have.
So I just prompt the user to Save the document at that time.
It's a little ugly, but it works..

  • Electronic Signature in FormsCentral

Can the option for electronic signature be added to forms built in FormsCentral?

No, FormsCentral does not support a signature workflow.
You can use FormsCentral to create a PDF form that you do not collect responses in FormsCentral, saving the form without the FormsCentral submit button and then add your own Submit functionality to the form/PDF and use Adobe EchoSign for the Signature solution (but again, this would not be processed/collected through FormsCentral): https://www.echosign.adobe.com

  • How to add electronic signatures to crystal report?

    All-
I need to add a .bmp (electronic signature) to the bottom of my Crystal PO form.  I want to use .bmp files located in a specific folder.  I see a Format graphic option and an area to enter a location, but can't seem to get it to work.  How do I insert a picture that is not just inserted into the form, but rather use a specific .bmp file in a specific location.  I need to put in an electronic signature of different people based on certain criteria.  Is there a way to do this?
    Thanks in advance.. Pat

    1. First, you need to have a default picture. I normally have an empty .jpg , let's call it Empty.jpg
    2. Assuming you insert different signature  .bmp based on in VendorCountry
    3. Following this steps:
    - Insert Empty.jpg into the PO fom
    - right click on the picture in crystal report, and click Format grapic
    -  In the picture tab, you can find the field Graphic Location
click on the blue pen on the right, then put in the condition as you want.
    If VendorCounty = 'US' then
    C:\abc.jpg
else if VendorCounty = 'AU' then
    C:\zzz.jpg
    else
    c:\empty.jpg

  • Implementing electronic signatures on an existing AP check run

    Hello all,
Has any one recently implemented/ added electronic signatures to their checks? We have been processing checks for a while in AP and hand signing them till now. Would like to add electronic signatures to this.
What are the options and possibilities that this feature can be achieved? Would appreciate any input on all the possible solutions.
    Thanks

You have lots of choices. You can use the various Electronic Forms software out in the market to accomplish this. For example, we use Optio to create laser checks from blank paper stock (no longer need to buy pre-printed check stock) and added an electronic signature as part of that processing. Optio was bought by Bottomline Technologies. Like I said, many vendors offer this kind of product. Oracle has the External Laser Format Payments program option. You can read about that in chapter 2 of the Oracle Payables Guide. As another person has noted, there are some documents you can look at as well. Is your company using any kind of Electronic Forms software today? If so, that may be the option that you will want to pursue first.

Digital Signature Certificate is very expensive.
Can I implement or create Electronic Signature in InfoPath 2010 or SharePoint 2010 Workflow?
It seems Collect Signature in SharePoint Workflow working on Digital Signature only.
    Please help.
    Thanks a lot.

How do you integrate Electronic signature to be printed on page / form ?
Are you using any application which converts electronic form into digital or some other form ?
In SharePoint ootb way there is no way to integrate electronic signature, but yes we have option for digital signature.
For electronic signature I found one article (obviously third party), not sure if this fullfils your requiremewnt or not

  • How do I sign a document in Adobe Reader w/electronic signature?

I'm trying to sign a tax form, its unclear from the Reader doc how to create a signature for use on the document.

    Hi Matt,
Starting with the form you want to sign opened in Reader, select the Fill & Sign tool on the right side of the toolbar. This will open the right hand Fill & Sign panel. Next, open (expand) the Fill & Sign Tools pane.
There are three possible scenarios from this point...
The Place Signature tool is disabled (grayed out). This would be because the security setting on the file do not allow for changes.
The Place Signature tool is enabled, but when you select it and get the Place Signature dialog, the only option available is Use a certificate. This is because the document contains an existing signature field and the assumption is the document author requires a secure digital signature as opposed to electronic signature.
The Place Signature tool is enabled, and all of the radio buttons are enable on the Place Signature dialog.
Depending on which of the three scenarios you encounter drive what you can do next. Obviously with scenario 1 there is nothing else to do. With scenario 2 you have to have access to a valid digital ID to create a digital signature. With scenario 3 you have the option of creating either a digital signature using your digital ID, or you can create an electronic signature by placing a mark on the document. That mark can be your typed name, a signature you create with a mouse, or a scanned image of your wet-ink signature.
If you need to create a digital signature, then you need to have access to a digital ID. There are two options for procuring a digital ID; either you can buy one from a trusted Certificate Authority (CA) who will vet your identity, or, you can have Reader generated an untrusted digital ID for free. What you select to do depends on what the second party (you're the first party, the document recipient is the second party, and if a CA is involved they are the third party) requires, or more precisely, what agreement you and other party come to.
I hope this helps get your started.

  • Adobe XI when i use signature option i try to use rectangle, it gives option of certificate signature, does not give me webcam or digital signature or any other option to sign

when i use signature option i try to use rectangle, it gives option of certificate signature, does not give me webcam or digital signature or any other option to sign, have downgraded to Adobe X, no options show. Have upgraded back to XI no change. Free software I am using currently.

There are two types of signatures in PDF: electronic signatures, which are just images (stamps, text, image) and digital signatures.
If you want to use electronic signatures in Acrobat XI go to Fill&Sign->Place Signature. If a drag rectangle for the digital signature dialog comes up, you have selected digital signatures and Acrobat/Reader remembered it. Cancel it, go back to Fill&Sign->Place Signature and click a triangle to the left of "Place Signature". Then click on "Changed Saved Signature" and select the electronic signature type you want to use.
If you want to use digital signatures you can create custom digital signature appearance. Go to Edit->Preferences->Signatures->Creation&Appearance->More. In the "Appearances" section click "New". You will be presented with the dialog that allows you to create a custom appearance. If you want to put there your picture or image of your ink signature, you need to prepare this image as a file beforehand, select "Image" radio button, browse to the location of your image file. In Reader you can use only PDF as your image file. In Acrobat you can use many more file formats: JPEG, PNG, etc.

  • IPM Electronic Signature/PDF Watermarking.

    All,
I'm attempting to satisfy a requirement for Electronic Signature or PDF Watermarking for IPM.
I know these utilities are intended for use in UCM, however, I guess my real question is what options
are available to those folks who use IPM?
BTW, I did install and configure the UCM PDF Watermarking component, but cannot get any results to show up in either the
    advanced or basic IPM Viewer.
Am I stuck using something like ITEXT on the LINUX side prior to ingestion of the PDF's into IPM?
I'm up for that - if it's really the only possibility. However, I was hoping to satisfy the requirement without a
    customization like this.
Thanks in advance for feedback . . .
    regards,
    -Phillip

    Hi ,
Is the watermarking configured and working for contents that are checked in from UCM ?
    Thanks

  • Delete default electronic signature

I created an "electronic signature" using Adobe Reader (NOT digital signature, rather one that looks like my hand written signature).
Now, if I do Sign -> Place Signature, it uses the signature I previously "took", without offering to create a new one.
Problem is, I'm not happy with the current one.
How do I get Adobe Reader to allow me to make a new signature, and make it the default?
I tried uninstalling and reinstalling Adobe Reader.  It retained the undesired signature.
    Thanks

    Hi Bannerdog58,
When you go to Sign--> Place Signature, you will get a drop down arrow and it gives option to clear previous signature. Please see the screenshot below:

  • How to enter 2nd Electronic Signature?

We recently instituted electronic signature for our Engineers using Acrobat X Pro and a third party certification. The plan is for the first engineer to sign the PDF document and email it to the second engineer for his signature and approval. The system works well when we convert a Word document to PDF, which shows the PDF Producer (File => Properties) as Adobe PDF Library. However, when we use an interactive Acrobat document generated by our publications department, it shows the PDF Producer as Adobe LiveCycle Designer ES 9.0. With the latter document, the first engineers can sign the document, but in the "Sign Document" dialogue box the "Lock Document After Signing" option is not available. As the result, the document is locked by the first person who signed it and the second person cannot sign it.
Is there an option to select to enable the second person to sign the document if it is generated by Adobe LifeCycle Designer?

    George,
Thank you for your reply. We ended up creating actual signature fields in Adobe LiveCyle on the documents and routed them to our engineers for their signatures. It worked great.

I suspect you're dealing with a dynamic XFA form and attempting to place an additional signature, as opposed to signing a preexisting digital signature field. It should work if the form has as many digital signature fields as will be needed. It won't otherwise. Note that if the form is a dynamic XFA but it doesn't need to be (e.g., because you're not adding or autoexpanding fields at run-time), then you might be able to create it as a static XFA form and then users will be able to place as many signatures as is needed.

  • Electronic Signature Recommendations

My department is currently looking at accepting e-signatures on our contracts.  However, we would like the signature to actually look like a wet signature, not just a typed name, we would also like some sort of validation that the name on the form is actually the person who signed it (i.e. someone isn't signing the CEOs name).  My manager was currently at a conference where she talked to someone from RPost.  She asked me to look into it.  I have discovered that there are a lot of e-signature companies out there.  How do you know which one is the best, and which one will work the best with Adobe forms?  Any information, or recommendations you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

Following up on Gregor’s post, I wanted to offer some additional insight related to security in general, and to DocuSign’s efforts specifically. Please know that while I work as DocuSign’s Chief Security Officer, my interest is in giving you information to help you make the best decision for your needs. So here goes!
SAS 70 Type II reports, soon to be SSAE 16, measure and independently assess standard service controls within an organization – no formal certification exists, just the resulting report.  These are industry-standard examinations conducted by an impartial, third party auditing firm.  Customers find these audit reports useful in evaluating the scope of an organization’s security controls and how well an organization performs in independent testing.
DocuSign consistently performs extremely well in these audits.  We not only have a SAS 70 Type II enterprise-level examination performed (that includes our electronic signature service, software development, operations, security, authentication options, end-to-end encryption, and anti-tampering methodologies), we also partner with an industry leading, professional data center firm that has SAS 70 Type II examinations performed on its security controls.  This firm is a global organization specializing in resilient physical and environmental security controls vital to protecting important and continuous production platforms.
Our data centers are commercial grade – which means that the significant data center controls in place include a constant guard presence, priority power and fuel contracts, durable HVAC systems, and seamless fail-over capabilities to another secure datacenter facility in the event of a regional disaster (to ensure business continuity for your company information, documents, and signature transactions).  It’s also important to note that our data centers are co-located to further ensure regionally distributed response times. Both commercial grade status and co-location are great questions to inquire about when considering any electronic signature solution.
Additionally, I would advise considering the following criteria when looking at potential partners:
    ·       Years in business with customer organizations similar to your business.
    ·       Those with extensively tested and redundant infrastructures, including 3rd party code reviews.
    ·       Strong authentication options, and superior encryption key management processes to protect the confidentiality and integrity of your, and your customers’ data.
    ·       Responsive customer service and professional development capabilities to understand, integrate, and deliver to your specific needs and requirements.
    ·       An organization with a strong privacy policy and practices, including security awareness training and protection of personal information.
    ·       Compliance with related industry security standards, such as PCI DSS.
I know I speak for everyone at DocuSign when I state that our efforts and our scope of testing and validation attest to DocuSign’s commitment, diligence and the due care we provide our customers in safeguarding the availability, integrity, and security of your documents and signatures.
Should you have any additional questions about security, testing or DocuSign specifically, please don’t hesitate to ask. Thanks.

  • Electronic signature for website

    Hi,
Does anyone has implemented or know of any samples or tutorials as how to implement e signature on a B2C website with a open source or custom code implementation.
    Thanks
    Vishnu

Canada's Secure Electronic Signature effectively requires a so-called digital signature for each signature, and thus technologies like Adobe's Echosign would not be sufficient.
Your options would be to procure a digital certificate for each customer (which would be long-winded and challenging for your clients) or to use a service like SIGNiX that complies with the Secure Electronic Signature requirements of Canadian legislation, but also provides a simple to use, web-based service that doesn't require any software installation or hardware.  Check out www.signix.com for more info.
