Emailing a Numbers Spreadsheets to Windows PC without error

I'm very new to Mac and iWork09/Numbers 09 and need assistance
I've created a few spreadsheets in Numbers 09 and sent them out via attachment in a group email to friends, clients and family, most PC users, well I keep getting replies that they can't open the attachments in Windows.
When I send the email, it ask it I want to send a Windows friendly version, I've clicked yes to do that but still having problems opening. Is this fixable? If so can I get some help here....thx

Numbers is required to open Numbers spreadsheets.
So, before sending some of them to WindowsLand, you must export as XL or as PDF.

    How do i send a Numbers spreadsheet to a Windows user without it being zipped?

    Hi Michael,
    Windows (Excel spreadsheet app) will not open a Numbers document. In Numbers, Menu > File > Export To > Excel... and then send it.
    It will most likely be zipped (a Numbers document is actually a folder of files that looks like a document).
    If you are swapping spreadsheets backwards and forwards between Numbers and Excel, glitches will build up. Export and import are not perfect, but at least Numbers makes some attempt. Excel makes no attempt. You will be forever fixing those glitches.
    Try Open Office or Libre Office (free) or use Excel for Mac to ensure compatibility.

    Ian.

  • Can't email a Numbers file

    I'm trying to ween myself off Microsoft Office and use iWork more...but besides the usual formatting issues that iWork apps don't support, I've just encountered another problem I can't seem to work around.  If I try to email a Numbers spreadsheet (in the clear or zipped) both Gmail and iCloud mail reject it as being an executable.
    Come on, Apple...it's four columns and 30 rows of pure text and numbers...nothing at all executable.  And the same spreadsheet in Excel will attach and send just fine in both email services.  Does Numbers somehow mark all spreadsheets as executables?  If so...I can't use it.  Thanks for any help.

    Apple Mail can be used to email a Numbers document. You can see the option here...
    If you choose Email, you get this dialog...
    It all works fine with Apple Mail. Gmail doesn't like the file package format and there's nothing we can do about that. Mailing a link to a document stored in iCloud also works, but there have been reports of corruption when opening in iCloud Numbers, so I would avoid that. Just download the file and open in Numbers for Mac.

  • Numbers spreadsheet will not open in Windows 8 Metro

    When I tap or double-tap on a Numbers for iCloud spreadsheet in Windows 8.1 using Internet Explorer in Metro mode, nothing happens. Other buttons work. Long-pressing brings up the contextual menu, and the items in that menu work. I can even change the name of the spreadsheet, but I can't open the dang thing--any of them.
    What gives?

    Hi there dk0654,
    You may find the information in the article below helpful. Note: While the article was wrtten for the Mac version of iTuens the information should still apply to the Windows version.

    All other .xls documents created by Mac Office 2004 retained the .xls file extention when I migrated them over to the new MacBook Air.

    I know what happened.  When I saved the document I somehow hit the Hide File Extension box.  Sorry to trouble this group. I simply resaved it w/o activating the Hide File Extension feature.

Closing Firefox with the [X] in the upper right corner closes the window ("Ctrl+W") but that does not necessarily close Firefox if it has subtasks running. • I can no longer save a Numbers spreadsheet.  Why?

    I can no longer save a Numbers spreadsheet.. Why?

    Rodeo,
    I received the file you emailed.  Without opening the file:
    I can tell you that you were NEVER able to save the file.  This is a Microsoft excel file (which we know because the extension is ".xls").  Numbers can open excel files then you can save the file as a Numbers file OR you can export the file back to excel using the menu item "File > Export To > Excel..."
    Did you create the file in Excel?  If so you can continue to edit the file in excel.  If you double clicked the file and it opened in Numbers then you need to answer the question which application do you want to use (Numbers or Excel)?

  • Applescript: Make iCal entry from Numbers spreadsheet

    I use a spreadsheet to book all my photography shoots. The columns (name, phone, email, job date, job time, job address, job city, services, notes) are inputted each time a client calls to book a shoot.Once they are booked, I create a new iCal entry for the "job date" with the title name being a slimmed down version of the services (ie, the client might have wanted photos, virtual tours, and prints, but for on site work, given that I will not be printing anything, I leave out the print from the title). So the final title might look like this: "photos, virtual tours @ 3pm". I also add the full address including the city into the iCal "location" field (just below the title field). Then I'll make sure that the date and time correspond to the spreadsheet. Next, I'll set it to a calendar I have made for these bookings. Finally, I'll add the services and notes to the "note" field at the very bottom of the iCal entry. Then click DONE.
    Can someone help me write a simple script that would read a preselected row in the numbers spreadsheet and, once initiated, would create a new iCal entry? Thank you.

    Thanks John. Yes, so I edited it a bit and made a few minor changes (basically adding some info to the notes section in the iCal entry). I've posted the code below. A couple minor tweaks would make this perfect: First, I'd prefer to simply selected one of the cells on a given row and then run the script--at that point the script would know to copy that entire row. I know this is possible because I have a script that does this... I'm just not sure how to integrate that part of the script with yours. I've posted the script below yours.
    Second, I'd like iCal to open the newly added entry so I can have a quick review of it. Currently there's no indication that it's been added and, which iCal does appear to initiate (if it was closed down), it does however remain in the background.
    Your script (with some mods):
    set myCal to "TEST" -- calendar name
    set myLength to 2 -- hours
    set myItems to my cjmTIDs(the clipboard, tab)
    if (count of myItems) is less than 12 then return
    set jobDate to date (item 4 of myItems)
    set timeArray to my numberFromHourText(item 5 of myItems)
    set hours of jobDate to (item 1 of timeArray)
    set minutes of jobDate to (item 2 of timeArray)
    set jobEnd to jobDate + (myLength * hours)
    set myTitle to (item 1 of my cjmTIDs((item 11 of myItems), "prints"))
    set myNotes to "Client: " & (item 1 of myItems) & return & return & "Tel: " & (item 2 of myItems) & return & return & "Services: " & (item 11 of myItems) & return & return & "Notes: " & (item 12 of myItems)
    set myURL to (item 3 of myItems)
    set theAddress to (item 6 of myItems) & ", " & (item 7 of myItems) & ", " & (item 8 of myItems)
    tell application "iCal"
              set myNewEvent to make new event at the end of events of calendar myCal with properties {start date:jobDate, end date:jobEnd, summary:myTitle, location:theAddress, url:myURL, description:myNotes}
    end tell
    on cjmTIDs(theText, theDelim)
              set my text item delimiters to theDelim
              set myList to text items of theText
              set my text item delimiters to {""}
              return myList

              set theParts to my cjmTIDs(theText, ":")
              if (count of theParts) is 2 then
                        set myHours to item 1 of theParts as number
                        set myMins to ((characters 1 thru -4 of item 2 of theParts) as text) as number

                        set myHours to ((characters 1 thru -4 of theText) as text) as number

              return {myHours, myMins}

    The other script that I mentioned (the one that knows to copy the entire row by just selecting a cell):

    tell application "Numbers 09"

  • Is there a way to password protect a numbers spreadsheet in ios5?

    Hi,
    I have created a numbers spreadsheet in my macbook and then i protected it with a password to open. Then i have uploaded it to icloud as i need to be able to access it from both my iphone4 and my ipad2. Although the spreadsheet is indeed accessible from all my devises, i don't get asked for a password neither on the iphone nor on the ipad and the spreadsheet opens right away without any protection (it actually asked for my password once, the first time i opened it in my ipad and tha was it. Since then it opens without asking for the password)
    Why isn't the password i created in the macbook working everytime i open it in any of the other two devices?
    Is there any way i can have it working everytime one tries to access it?
    Thx
    Ibro

    This is an iOS question in an OSX app discussion, but I'll give an opinion. iOS devices are personal, and can be passcode protected themselves. It's reasonable to assume that once the file is opened on that personal device, it will always open on that device without further verification.

  • How do I outline a single cell in a numbers spreadsheet

    I am trying to emphasise the borders of a single cell in a numbers spreadsheet;  I follow all the instructions I can find in mac help, they just don't make any difference.  I may be ancient, but I can usually suss things out in time; this baffles me.  However, I do realize I may have blundered into the wrong type of help forum here.

    To place borders around a cell in Numbers -
    Make sure the cell has been selected, i.e. is the active cell.
    Click the Inspector tool in the Toolbar -
    Then click the Table inspector icon in the Inspector window's toolbar -
    In that screen, look down to the section "Cell Borders"...
    Click the button for full border (arrow in pic above) -
    Adjust the color of the border as needed for visibility (oval in pic above) -
    And then you may need to adjust the line weight (thickness) to get it visible on-screen. To do that, click the dropmenu in that section showing "Thin" and select the next item underneath "thin" in the menu. This will make the item just to the right of that menu active - you can then use the arrow-buttons to make the line weight thicker. Although the thinnest setting (0.25 pt) may print okay, on some screens it just doesn't show - especially of the border color has not been set to a hard black. Making it thicker can help in viewing it on-screen.

  • How to Install Windows 7 Without the Disc

    1a)  Here is very useful article from PCWorld.com. The article is entitled "How to Install Windows 7 Without the Disc" and means just what it says. The article also has links to Magical Jelly Bean Keyfinder and legitimate Windows 7 ISOs from Digital River, a licensed distributor of Microsoft software. The article lists "Step 1" as;
    "Find your Windows 7 product key: Typically this 25-character alphanumeric string is printed on a sticker affixed to your PC or on documentation included with your PC. Alternatively, you can use a keyfinder program such as Magical Jelly Bean Keyfinder to pull your product key from the Registry. You need your product key to reinstall Windows."
    1b)  Using a key finder, however, is only useful if the Windows 7 product key was printed on a sticker (Microsoft Certificate of Authenticity) affixed to your PC, on documentation included with your PC, or sent via email by Microsoft. Assuming your computer came from one of the big brand computer manufacturers... HP, Sony, Dell, Gateway, etc... as most do, it uses a generic "mass activation" OEM SLP key. Trying to use this key by itself isn't going to work. This OEM SLP key needs to be mated with an OEM SLP certificate and an appropriate OEM BIOS with a proper SLIC table.
    1c)  Here is where ABR Beta With Windows 7 Support comes to the rescue. Follow the "How to use it" section of ABR for Windows Vista for information and instructions on how to use ABR. The steps listed for Vista apply to Windows 7 as well. Perform the "activation backup" to "backup" and save the OEM SLP key and OEM SLP certificate. Save the entire ABR folder to an external location for later use. This will allow you to pre-activate your "clean" Windows 7 install on the computer you pulled the key and certificate from.
    1d)  Now install Windows 7 from your new "Windows 7" disc or USB stick, following all prompts as needed. Don't enter a Windows 7 product key if request. Also, don't allow Windows to try to auto-activate. Once Windows is fully installed, run ABR "activation restore" to "restore" the previously backed up product key and certificate to the new Windows 7 install. Verify that Windows is activated, repeat "activation restore" if needed.
    2)  Here is another useful article, this time from SevenForums.com. This arcticle is entitled "Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7" and provides detailed steps required to backup your computer, audit current hardware and software, locate software and drivers, install and activate Windows 7, and create a Windows 7 Backup Image of your fresh install.
    Good luck.
    Links to additional Windows 7 SP1 "Editions" and "Languages" can be found HERE and HERE.
    Link to "ei.cfg Removal Utility". The "ei.cfg Removal Utility" is a simple tool that will remove the ei.cfg  from any Windows ISO disc image, thereby converting the image into a "universal disc" that will prompt the user to select an edition during setup instead of being forced to use different discs for different versions of Windows 7.

    ervis,
    Before formatting the hard drive you should have been able to use the HP Recovery Manager to create your recovery discs or perform a system recovery. This is provided the recovery partition wasn't already corrupt or damaged. If the "D:" HP Recovery partition is missing or damaged and you don't have a set of HP Recovery Discs, you will need to use the information in my previous post to get your computer up and running again.
    The information in the document referred you to applies to several different "types" of installations;
    Using ABRbeta is only needed if you have an active OEM factory SLP (system locked preactivated) installation of Windows. You use ABR to pull the factory key and certificate off the computer, to reuse it on the same computer with a clean Windows install.
    If you are just installing Windows and are going to use the Windows 7 product key on the COA on the side of your computer, all you need to do is download the same version of Windows that your key is for and burn the ISO. Now install Windows answering or following all prompts as needed (except do not enter the Windows product at this time... it will be entered later). Once Windows has completely installed, enter the key and activate it. Your Windows 7 OA key should work on a SP1 install without issue.
    The only thing I see that could mess things up, is the language of the install. If you are still having trouble activating Windows, please reference the ISO you download and a post a photo of your Windows COA
    with the key erased or Xed out.

    Numbers 3.x can only open Numbers '09 and later.  You will need Numbers '09 to open Numbers '08 files.
    If it is a single file (or only a few) you can email me and I will open and convert then email back.  My email address is in the "Biography" of my profile.
    You may have Numbers '09 installed.  Look in the folder "/Applications/iWork '09"  if Numbers is in that folder launch it, open the file you tried to open, and save.  Then you should be able to open in Numbers 3.x

  • How may i place a Numbers spreadsheet in an InDesign document?

    How may i place a Numbers spreadsheet in an InDesign document?
    It's possible?

    Hi.
    You can import a .xls file.
    First, go to Preferences > File handling > check "Create links ... spreadsheet files" in order to be able to update your table when modified in Excel.
    Note that you won't be able to get any formatting from Excel file, so you should create a custom table style, along with paragraph and character styles.
    While importing your Excel file, check "import options", select "Unformatted Table", and apply your table style.
    Of course, no dynamic math operation can be make within InDesign Table, you must do it in your source file, then resave it and update your link.
    If you properly used cells, paragraphs and characters styles, the formatting will be preserved when updating link to the spreadsheet.
    Don't forget your .xls file is now linked to your indesign file (just like a picture), so don't move or delete it without caution...
