Embedded images result in enormous filesize

I'm using Illustrator to crop and arrange a number of raster images. However, I'm starting to have file management problems, because the Illustrator files quickly balloon in size.
Example: I got public domain jpg image of a deer off the Wikimedia Commons. This jpg image is 0.35MB. I opened up a new Illustrator document, placed and embedded the image, and saved the document (with the 'pdf compatible box' unchecked). The resulting Illustrator file is 7.7MB in size, over 20 times the size of the embedded jpg image.
I've looked around these fora, but other than the 'pdf compatible box', I couldn't find any good solutions. Could anyone suggest a workaround? Or is there some other option or preference that I could tweak? I need to use embedded images rather than links, but the files are getting out of control (>100MB).
The screen capture at the end of this post shows the situation. In the top folder in the screencapture, the image file is highlighted, so you can see the filesize. In the lower folder in the screencapture, the Illustrator file is highlighted, so you can see it's filesize. Then you can see the open Illustrator document on the right.
(edit: the forum software is no longer allowing me to add images, so I've put the screencapture on Google Drive here:
https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B0Hoxcl5zTEtX0d3MlFQWnhSWEU/edit?usp=sharing)
The .ai file with the embedded image is here:
https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B0Hoxcl5zTEtMGhiOVRnMnhSVGM/edit?usp=sharing
I'm using Illustrator CS6 64-bit, v16.0.3 on Windows 8-64.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated,
Tim

My IT guy told me a few years ago that the reason Illustrator links turn to garbage is because in Illustrator the entire filename location is used in remembering the link (not a relative link as you can use with a web site) and there is a limit of 256 characters, and it's an absolute link, meaning includes the root level server/disk name. For example if you use: MyMainServer/2013ClientProjects/PrettyLongClientName/TopofthelineProductline>DeliciousFla vorline/HeightWeightSizeline/ProductFancyLongName/Labelstructure/Links, for your folder hierarchy, you have used over 150 characters already for your links, and if you think you have the modern 256 characters for your filename, think again. If you get garbage links, then you have exceeded 256 characters in your absolute filename. Keep it short!!
Linking files is still the best, but you need short folder and file names, not too deep, and putting links in the same folder as the art are recommended.
Sort your items in the folder by naming them, not by putting them in folders (such as, start image names with "IMG_", other categories give them their own prefix.)
If you think you need to embed, think again. If you just need it to send a proof to the client, do one of two things: (1) take a screen shot (you have a big monitor right?) or (2) more professional, save an eps (then you will need to embed) and then process it into a pdf of the desired resolution in Distiller (then toss the eps of course). (Adjust settings of an existing setting to get the size you want and "Save As" settings if necessary in Distiller.)
If you are sending to a commercial printer, it really shouldn't matter in most cases how big the files are, but if you're sending a proof to your own printer and don't want to hog the bandwidth, do one of two above.
If you are worried about file size for storage, new 2T drives are about $120 and falling.
Sorry there is no simple answer, but that's the way it goes for those of use whose first application is Illustrator, not InDesign. It would be nice if somebody at adobe took a look at harmonizing functions such as saves, links/imports, tool behavior etc., across applications.

  • Mail not showing embedded images

    This problem has been bugging me for a while.
    I am getting some emails (from my company communications) that are incorrectly formatted by Mail. I see big boxes labeled "Missing Plug-in". The rest of the text is there, but those big boxes make the mail hard to read.
    So today I decided to look a bit deeper into the problem. I brought it down to the presence of image tags that call for embedded images (included as attachments) using the "cid:" protocol. For example:
    <img src="cid:[email protected]" alt="Find" border="0">
    Is this a restriction in mail (I am running mail 6.1 on Mountain Lion). Or is there some config parameter I need to tweek to enable support for embedded images ?
    Thunderbird has no problem. I also did a quick check with Google Mail and Yahoo Mail, and neither show the images. But they just show nothing, so the resulting email is still readable. Mac OSX Mail shows big boxes with the "Missing Plug-in" note. I would be happy if Mail just ignored the images.
    I should point out that mail on iPhone and iPad work fine (they display the images).
    Albert

    Try this - worked for me...
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/20652845#20652845
    If that doesn't link properly, here's the original solution, cut and pasted:
    "MailPluginFix"
    From the Code2K:Labs site: http://code2k.net/products/mailpluginfix/
    From MacUpdate: http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/37804/mailpluginfix
    Just download the fix and double-click it - next time you open mail, you'll see your attachments.

  • Emails with embedded image show only =20

    I am seeing this issue across multiple iPhones with iOS 4.3.x and 5.0. It is very inconsistent. I have seen the same email go out to multiple users in a group and some can see the embedded image correctly while others only see the following in place of the image:
    ------_=_NextPart_002_01CC8F42.DA025060
    Content-Type: text/plain;
       charset="us-ascii"
    Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable
    =20
    =20
    =20
    =20
    This tells me the sender isn't formating the message in a way the recipient cannot read it. It seems to be an encoding issue. The email will display fine in various email clients but not on the iPhone. The same email can later be sent again and it will work fine.
    The iPhones' email accounts are setup as IMAP and the mail server is running Exchange 2003. I'm sure this will go away once I upgrade the server to 2010 and use ActiveSync with an Exchange account instead of IMAP, but I need to make it work correctly for now.
    Is anyone else experienceing this issue and if you are, what server, account type, iOS are you running?
    Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!

    I have the same problem with FF 14.0.1 on a freshly reinstalled Win7 32:
    I have a 100Mbps cable connection, but get a '''ridiculous 4-5 Mbps''' out of FF while the latest versions of Explorer and Chrome gives at least 75Mbps...
    All tests have been done with virus protection on as well as off (the latter is something I loathe doing) and with two different speed tests, one of them being speedtest.net. The results are conclusive: The problem clearly rests with FF. So: What in Heavens name has happened to my longtime favvo browser? At the moment it is quite useless and I am at my wits end.
    I don't particularly want to, but as of tonight I'm transferring all my bookmarks to Chrome as a hopefully temporary measure.

  • RichEditableText with embedded images does not handle mouse events reliably

    I'm using Flash Builder "Burrito".  downloaded a couple of weeks ago.  Flash Player 10.1.85.3 debug version.
    I have the following MXML object:
    <s:Scroller
    width="100%" height="100%"
    xmlns:fx="http://ns.adobe.com/mxml/2009"
    xmlns:s="library://ns.adobe.com/flex/spark"
    xmlns:mx="library://ns.adobe.com/flex/mx"
    skinClass="components.skins.SxScrollerSkin"
    >
    <s:Group id="myGroup" width="100%" height="100%">
    <s:RichEditableText id="myRichText" >
    </s:RichEditableText>
    <!--- Do not set the height of the RichEditableText - since it seems to prevent the appearance of the vertical scroll bars -->
    </s:Group>
    </s:Scroller>
    With the following Actionscript to initialize, etc.
                textContainer = new SxBorderContainer(name);
                textContainer.dx = dxAvailable;
                textContainer.dy = dyAvailable;
    scroller = new SxScroller();
    scroller.move(dxPadding,dyPadding);
    scroller.dx = dxAvailable
    scroller.dy = dyAvailable;
    textContainer.addElement(scroller);
    var richText:RichEditableText;
    richText = scroller.richText;
    richText.toolTip = toolTip;
    richText.enabled = true; // required for mouse click capture
    richText.selectable = true; // required for mouse click capture
    richText.width = dxAvailable
         var textFlow:TextFlow = TextFlowUtil.importFromString(textFlowString, WhiteSpaceCollapse.PRESERVE);
          richText.textFlow = textFlow;
    And the following code to catch events:
                    richText.addEventListener(FlowElementMouseEvent.MOUSE_DOWN,userMouseEvent);
                    richText.addEventListener(FlowElementMouseEvent.MOUSE_UP,userMouseEvent);
                    richText.addEventListener(FlowElementMouseEvent.CLICK,userMouseEvent);
    Here's the problem.   If I have embedded images in the TextFlow that is imported into the richText, I only catch "some" mouse clicks.  It's hard to know, but it seems that only mouse clicks into white space (between paragraphs) are caught.  Mouse up and down are caught, but not "click".  Very puzzling.
    TextFlow like this:
        <TextFlow>
          <div color="#442222" fontFamily="Times New Roman" fontSize="20" paragraphSpaceAfter="15" textIndent="15">
            <p>
              <span>
                Alice was beginning to get very tired of sitting by her sister on the bank, and of having nothing to do:  once or twice she had peeped into the book her sister was reading, but it had no pictures or conversations in it, `and what is the use of a book,' thought Alice `without pictures or conversation?'
              </span>
            </p>
            <p>
                  <span>So she was considering in her own mind</span>
                  <img source="assets/library/alice/images/White Rabbit.png" height="auto" width="auto" float="left" />
                   <span> (as well as she could, for the hot day made her feel very sleepy and stupid), whether the pleasure of making a daisy-chain would be worth the trouble of getting up and picking the daisies, when suddenly a White Rabbit with pink eyes ran close by her.</span>
            </p>
    If there are no embedded imags, I get all clicks exactly.
    Is it a bug?  Am I missing something?
    Thanks,
    Oz

    Thanks for the answer. First I need clicks anywhere in the RichEditableText (no links or images). I use the selection manager to find the exact word that was clicked.
    The next step would be to capture clicks on links and images.
    I have tried using MouseEvent and had the same result (or worse) as FlowElementMouseEvent.  I will go back and retest with your suggestion.
    Oz
    Result of retest:
    I catch clicks only over images embedded in the TextFlow.  I catch only mouse up/down over text - both MouseEvent and FlowElementMouseEvent.
    Puzzling.  Where are the clicks going?

  • How to display embedded image & text in content presenter web template

    We have a requirement to display both text and embedded image together like in WYSIWYG editor in Webcenter spaces. The content has to be dynamic and is context sensitive so that users in the same role can edit and publish the content. The users who are in different role would see different piece of content.
    To achieve this use case, i think Content Presenter enabled with Site studio is the best choice. I have created element and region definitions with WYSIWYG and region templates in site studio. Created contributor data file in UCM. Content Presenter in webcenter is configured with that region definition and the region template etc.
    At design time, the contributor data file is edited and some image / text is added in WYSIWYG editor.. But however at runtime view, i could see only the text added in WYSIWYG editor and the file name of the image embedded....Any one successfully used Content Presenter with Site studio???

  • Base64 decoding - perl & openssl vs. html embedded image

    I am having a strange problem. I have a TIFF image stored in a SQLite database encoded as Base64. When I retrieve the Base64 characters, save them to a file using an applescript writing a utf-8 text file to disk (or just saving it in TextWrangler), and then try to feed that file into openSSL using the Base64 decoding option, I get an empty file or just a small (not nearly large enough) file that will not open. BUT! When I put that same string into a img tag using base64 decoding in an HTML document, it displays properly in a browser window. Anyone have an idea why this might happen? It does not work using perl either.
    The html code is here: http://web.me.com/danaleighton/base64.html
    The file I am feeding into openSSL is here: http://web.me.com/danaleighton/base64sm.txt
    I am using the following command: openssl enc -base64 -d -in base64sm.txt -out testscript.tiff
    This perl command also does not work: perl -i.txt -MMIME::Base64 -e 'undef $/;while(){print decode_base64($_);}' base64sm
    Thanks in advance for any help!!!

    it's most likely the text you're extracting from the database is either corrupted or wasn't encoded as you expect. Note that your success with the img tag decoding may be misleading. I can't give you details that apply to this case, but browsers typically use smarter decoding tools which are more robust ...
    1) Was the text in the database produced by an internal encoder or was it obtained either from a standard e-mail attachment or produced by this command or its equivalent?:
    Thanks Ray - I was afraid of that. I am extracting the image from a database written by a commercial application. I checked with the developers, and they said it was base64, so that's all I have to go on. I reported this anomaly to them but haven't heard back in over a week.
    2) Are you sure you're retrieving exactly the same bytes that were stored in the database?
    As sure as I can be. For testing, I invoke sqlite from a shell to do the select statement and dump the result to the terminal. Then copy and paste from terminal to a TextWrangler document. I have done the same with an Applescript.
    One complicating factor: the text stored in the database has these weird markup tags that I can't find any documentation. They look like this: <iimg><preferredFilename>Embedded image</preferredFilename><segment>TU0AK...=
    </segment><segment>UdSVL...=
    </segment></iimg>
    I strip these out of the field coming from the database.
    To isolate the problem...
    Unfortunately, since I am not creating the database, I am loath to write to it. I could, but since the problem is likely in the way the developers are encoding or storing the data, it wouldn't do much to solve my problem...
    Thanks so much for your suggestions!! Very helpful.

  • Rendering of embedded images

    <p>We are creating reports out of MS SQL. They contain besides tables and charts images that are showing maps. These images are created in MapInfo, saved to jpg and stored as BLOB in the database. On the maps are the results of cellular drive tests along routes. For each network operator we have one map. Before placing them into the DB they are all looking same (no tint).</p><p> <img src="http://portal.lws-cna.com/temp/sample1.jpg" alt=" " title="sample1 http://portal.lws-cna.com/temp/sample1.jpg" width="400" height="257" /><br /><a href="http://portal.lws-cna.com/temp/sample1.jpg">http://portal.lws-cna.com/temp/sample1.jpg</a></p><p><img src="http://portal.lws-cna.com/temp/sample3.jpg" alt=" " title="sample 3 http://portal.lws-cna.com/temp/sample3.jpg" width="400" height="257" /><br /><a href="http://portal.lws-cna.com/temp/sample3.jpg">http://portal.lws-cna.com/temp/sample3.jpg</a></p><p>As you can see the maps are showing the same area but different results. When I include them into the report they are tinted. I could reproduce this in an image processing tool by decreasing the color depth using different methods.</p><p>I wanted to understand how the rendering of embedded images works. Are there settings/measures to influence the rendering behavior?</p><p>Thanks, Joerg</p>

  • Embedded images in Hotmail Live become little grey squares

    When I embed images within the text in an email it looks fine. Then my recipient tells me the image didn't get thru, just a little grey square. I check the Sent Folder, it too is a little grey square.
    I can receive embedded images from others.

    Hi buccarasta, I haven't found a solution for this. What I get is:
    * Copy/paste - Hotmail: Firefox inserts the image as a "data" URI. If you view the source of the message in Outlook 2010, you can see the URI is there but Outlook 2010 doesn't convert it to an image. In Hotmail, the URI is converted to the gray square link. IE ignores any attempt to paste an image from the file system. Same result with drag and drop. (Also tested in Firefox 11 Portable Edition, and it had the same issue.)
    * Copy/paste - Gmail: Firefox inserts the image as a "data" URI. If you view the source of the message in Outlook 2010, you can see the URI is there but Outlook 2010 doesn't convert it to an image. In Gmail, in the Sent item, the image is simply gone.
    Both of these webmail sites are failing to convert the data URI back to an image. Perhaps for security reasons??
    '''For the time being, attaching images''' appears to be the best approach.
    (Maybe someone can fix this with an add-on? But I suspect it will involve hosting the images on the web somewhere and just making that easier.)

    does a single biblt. The result is a modest compilation speedup, on the order of
    several hundred milliseconds when compiling Flexstore.

    Hiya, Mike,
    It's pretty tough to work through pasted-in code. If you can, please upload a page to a server, so we can see your pages in context. We'll be able to download it and look at it.
    That said, you can do this: Find the beginning of an editable region in Code View. It will look like this:
    <!-- InstanceBeginEditable name="nameofregionhere" -->
    Click anywhere in that tag, between the opening bracket and the closing bracket.
    Then, on the vertical toolbar on the left side of the Code window, click on the "Collapse Full Tag" button. It is the one with two arrows pointing at each other. This will collapse that entire editable region. Then click the button with the two arrows pointing away from each other. That will re-open the editable region, but will highlight it.
    If you have nested regions, you will find the other inside one of the editable regions. If you copy the <!-- InstanceBeginEditable and do a search on it in that document, you will find the nested region.

    Thanks John,
    I've downloaded the exif tool + the gui - I can see how it's meant to work and have successfully processed a single file (even when I got the name wrong it still copied exif time data!)
    I'll investigate further on how to do a batch and use command line
    Really appreciate your prompt response to my problem.
    I will let you all know how I get on - will take quite a few weeks but I am confident I can get there!
    Thanks Mike
    A week later I've now got back into this.  I used the exif gui tool - which was very simple to use once I sat down with peace and quiet for 10 mins!  I successfully copied and updated the correct exif data including capture time from the original backup files.  My metadata keywords remained untouched when I then updated the metadata setting from disk in lightroom.
    exif is a great tool, and I found it easier to use than AM pro - I couldn't  see the photo attributes in the trial download so made it hard to sort by date.
    Anyway my problem was overcome thank you

  • Messenger Express 6 Unable to display embedded images

    Hi
    Messenger Expresss seems tob unable to display embedded images (gif or jpeg) in the form cid:image.gif and some hosted images. In reference to the the cid:image.gif , when I open the email get an error from the browser that states "Warning: the application cid must be lauched to view this file." or something close to that. It gives me a choice of opening "cid" or canceling. There is also a check box "remember my choice for all files." which I choose and then I get an email full of broken image links.
    I've tried this in Firefox and IE the routine is a bit different but the result is the same. No images displayed.
    I also used a netflix email I recieved.. some of the images displayed some did not. The ones that did display were from www.netflix.com some of the others hosted on an image server somewhere in the netflix namespace did not.
    I'm at a loss. If anyone can shed some light on this I'd be very thankful
    Erik

    I was speaking about what client created the original mail messate.
    The "error message" isn't very useful. Is the mail message itself is badly formed, then the problem lies with the client that created it.
    You should be able to tell from the headers of the message.
    If you have the message file on disk, examine it with a text editor. "Message file on disk" means the original file, as stored on the server as a xxx.msg file, not what any client might save to a local disk.
    When we work these kinds of things as tech support cases, we start out with this file.
    I have no idea what gmail does, so that's not really relevant.
    Your IMAP client may be better at displaying badly formed messages than webmail is.

  • What controls whether embedded images scale to email window size?

    When I create a new Mail.app msg and insert or drag/drop an image inline, it visually scales to fit the size of my msg window, which is about 60% of my screen width. (I'm not talking about altering the physical size of the image)
    However, when I look at the msg from the sent folder or from a copy sent to myself, it appears fullsize, and this causes the msg text to now have a line length equal to the width of the embedded image. So now I have to scroll sideways to read the msg/view the image, or open the note to the size of the image, which I don't want to do. I want the computer to adapt to me, not the other way around.
    I'm pretty sure that this used to function as I desire. To further rub it in, I got a msg from a relative today, sent from his peecee using DarkSideSoftware, and those images scale to my msg size. What's the deal?
    iMac G5 2GHz Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    hi, in prefs, Composing: Message Format: Rich Text
    The only contextual menu choices are Download Image and Copy Image. However, if I check an image that scales properly in the email I mentioned, the resulting menu includes:
    Open Attachment
    Open With
    Save Attachment
    Save to Downloads Folder
    View as Icon
    I also notice that 1 sec after hovering over the image in the "good" note, I get a popup for a few seconds indicating the image name, status, mime-type but hovering over the image in the other note produces no result.
    I thought it might have something to do with send/recv via .mac (imap) VS the "good" note came via another of my pop accts, but testing shows the same results.
    For grins, I blew the dust off Entourage 2004 and let it go get about 200 mail msgs, and the "good" note acts exactly the same, that is the images all scale to window size. The last note I sent via Mail with a 1920x1200 img and downloaded into Entourage displays inline --> smaller <-- than the note window size... It appears Entourage in general wants to scale to 50% of whatever the window size is moved to.
    Ok, I took the "good" note which was scaling correctly and used Mail.app to fwd it to my .mac acct and when I download it with Mail.app the images no longer scale, but now show fullsize. Same note functions as before/correctly in Entourage.

  • How to get the binary content of embedded Images

    Dear collegues,
    since a few weeks I am trying very hard to parse the XML-string of an interactive form containing embedded images. We need the binary content of this JPG-image files to store them in a database - just to have the possibility to generate the forms again with additional values which are created during the process.
    Using the ixml classes I am able to fetch the image string during parsing - but this is just a string and not a JPG-image. I converted the string to xstring - but the result is still no image format.
    Is there a way to fetch the binary content of embedded images from PDF or XML? Any suggestion would be great.
    Thanks In advance.
    Mariana

    Hello again,
    the problem is solved. For collegues which are interested in the solution:
    1. parse the image string with the ixml classes
    2. convert the image-string to xstring using fm SSFC_BASE64_DECODE
    3. save the xstring
    4. pass the xstring to the form interface
    Thats it.
    Regards

  • Illustrator converting paths to embedded images

    I have a funky issue that I've come across. I have several files that were made using Illustrator CS3. There is a particular type of path item in them (a basic shape path with gaussian blur applied to them) that when I open up the file using CS6 that path item is treated by Illustrator like it's a embedded image.
    I've remade those items as an actual path item with gaussian blur applied, and all seems fine until I save and re-open the file, they become embedded images again. I'm thinking it might be an issue with a setting somewhere but I'm not finding it.
    I have several files of the same type that don't have this issue but I'm not finding any difference between them. At this point I'm stumped...any suggestions?

    After playing around with things for a while I've learned that what I must do is choose "Save as..." with the file, then it will change it to a CS6 file and the world seems happy, but because I had warning dialogs supressed it wasn't alerting me to the fact that the file still was a legacy file when I simply saved, and when I chose "Save as..." I just wasn't making it far enough to get to the dialog where I got to change the file type. Again, most of the files (which were all created at the same time) were not having this issue which was why it was confusing...

  • OBIEE 10G Embedded Image not displayed on PDF

    Hi
    We have some embedded images (source on network share or on the webserver) on a dashboard. On the screen the images are displayed without problems.
    But if we want to print the dashboard (f.e. PDF) the images are not printed. In html-view the images would be displayed.
    Is there a known bug that images can't be printed on dashboard pages or do we have to embed them different?
    Thank you

    Hi Team,
    I do face the same issue of image not displayed in only pdf output format. Our client has deployed OBIEE 10.1.3.4.1 using Weblogic application server and is accesible through a secured url access.
    I have followed the fmap syntax to locate the image, also made sure the image is getting accessed through url, tried with different images of different sizes . In all cases the image display is appearing fine in HTML & Excel output. But not getting displayed only for pdf output.
    Can you please help me with this regard if am missing any specific setup for pdf output. Is there is any pointers or documentation available to get around this issue.
    Thanks in advance.
