Embedding fonts... no punctuation showing

hello,
I am having problems with my flash app located here:
SEO ticker
domain field: I am embedding a font to go into a dynamic
text box that is displaying data from an xml sheet. the periods
were displayed, but when I embedded the font the periods
disappeared. I tried embedding all characters from the font and I
still get no punctuation. it works only for the letters (upper and
lowercase)
date field: I tried embedding all fonts into this field and
there were no numbers being displayed. it works only for the
letters (upper and lowercase)
why is Flash not embedding these fonts? Thanks ahead for any
help

I'm kinda new also, but I'll answer since you have had no
responses yet.
First, I would suggest that you not embed all characters, but
select Uppercase, Lowercase, Numerals and Punctuation. Embedding
all makes your file size larger... When exactly did you see the
periods show up, when you were publishing locally?
Second, is it really worth using that font?
Third, does it work with different fonts?
There is also an issue with how you have the punctuation in
xml, but I'm not sure what that is. You may have to put brackets or
something around them.
BTW, I do run high resolution, but I can barely read the
text. The letters are too close together in hte domain
field...

• Why do PDFs created with some print presets show the error message "cannot extract embedded font."

Whenever I create a pdf from InDesign using a press-quality preset, I get an error message upon opening the file. The error message says that an embedded font cannot be extracted.
InDesign indicates the font is not present in the file.
In Acrobat's properties, the font in the error message is listed and shows that it is not embedded, and that the actual font is unknown.
Running the "embed fonts" from preflight fixups doesn't help.

Found this fix in Preflight: Under prepress, I selected my destination, which is sheetfed offpress (CMYK) and ran the analyze and fix. The updated file opened without the error message.

• How to show embedded and not embedded font in TextField at the same time?

Hi guys,
I need to show embedded and not embedded font in my TextField at the same time. TextField has embedFonts = true and isHTML = true.
Any ideas?

Two different font won't work for me because I need to support all UTF glyphs.
Idea with two TextFields one on top of other seems to be working. The only problem I see here - if half string is Chinese and hand Latin - then it will be quite problematic to properly position text...

• Font in embedded swf now not showing in ie6

Hi There,
We've noticed that a .swf which was recently updated using CS5 no longer displays the font in ie6 - it was originally created several years ago in CS3 so we're wondering if something has changed with regard to the way Flash embeds fonts?
This tutorial looks fairly extreme for something so simple: http://www.adobe.com/devnet/flash/quickstart/embedding_fonts.html
The font is the Microsoft font Tahoma and we've updated our test machine to the latest version of Flash - but still no joy.
When I click various text in the Flash file, they're all set to the following in the properties panel:
- Classic Text
- Static Text
Is there a simple way to embed fonts or do you now have to create a font symbol and follow all the steps described in the above link?
Sorry, have just never noticed this before.
Any help or pointers in the right direction would be much appreciated.
Cheers

It should work just fine in IE6. You might want to make sure you don't target any version of flash higher than you absolutely need to. I'm not sure how extensively supported IE6 is with Adobe any longer.
If you're not using any dynamic text and it's literally all static then you don't need to embed the font at all. Flash does that for you automatically on static text fields. The user (as kglad said) does not need to have the font installed. The text is baked into flash as vector outlines.

• Embedded fonts not showing?

I've embedded fonts in my swf for users. On my computer, which contains the font, it works locally and online as it shoud. However, on user's computers without the font it defaults to the device font, why? Isn't the font supposed to be embedded in the file? Thanks...

Hi Jin-Huang
But when I use Simple ASProject with SDK 4.1 then it works fine but when I create Flex project then it give error
with SWFContext.
I think it's a issue of swfcontext or AS comunication with Spark components.
Please let me know if any solution.
Thanks

• Embedding Font Issue

Need help with embedding fonts. I have the correct fonts in Pagemaker, I can export pages into pdf from PM, when I look at the PDF on my local with the fonts, they are there. I look at the PDF on another system or mobile and the PDF does not have the fonts. I have looked into the PDF and can see that the fonts state they are embedded bu they are not showing up in the actual pages of the pdf. Any suggestions? I am using PM 7.0 with Adobe Acrobat Pro 6.0 and have installed Distrller 5.0.

Could be a licensing issue.

• Module not unloading if embedded font was ever used

So, I have a test app that uses modules with the font embeded. Using ModuleManager I am able to load up the module. Once I call IModuleInfo.factory.create(), I am then able to setStyle("fontFamily", "BPDiet") and the font does show up. The issue I am now having is that once I have used a font from a module, even if my TextArea is no longer using it (I even tried removing the textArea, and replacing it with a new one), the module will not unload.
I read through this "What We Know About Unloading Modules" and I think I am not leaving any references around.They are loaded using the load() defaults. There is no code (that is used) in the module. The modules are not being added to the display, so they never receive focus.
Note that I am unable to run the profiler as suggested in the article as I don't have the premium Flash Builder 4. <grrr>
Note that the first module that is loaded, I can never get to unload, even if I never used the font embedded in it, but all subsequent modules will unload, if I do not use the embedded font. I can live with the first one being pinned as long as I can unload the others that are not in use.
Here is the code from one of my modules:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<mx:Module xmlns:fx="http://ns.adobe.com/mxml/2009"
xmlns:s="library://ns.adobe.com/flex/spark"
xmlns:mx="library://ns.adobe.com/flex/mx">
<fx:Script>
<![CDATA[

fontName='BPDiet',
mimeType='application/x-font')]
public static var BPDietNormal:Class;
public function GetSampleTextArea():TextArea {
var SampleTextArea:TextArea = new TextArea();
SampleTextArea.text = "Test BPDiet please!";

return SampleTextArea;

<s:TextArea id="sampleTextArea" fontFamily="{fontNameForSample}" text="Some Sample text for your viewing"/>
</s:VGroup>
</s:Application>
A couple things to note; I am calling System.rc() in the unloadCurrentFont() method just to speed up seeing the SWF unload in the debug console. The DoNonImportantWork() is there to just cause some events to happen and to create some objects that will need to be GC'ed. It also let me know that the fonts are not getting registered in Font.
I'm going to have 30 fonts (and more, that designer is busy) that I will need to be able to dynamically load, but right now, loading them with CSS style modules blows up after about 15 because style modules register the font so I cannot unload the CSS swf.

To help eliminate the question of whether the TextArea is being held by something else, I have removed it from the MXML, and now programatically create it. That did not help.
So, I got the trial version of Flash Builder 4 installed on another machine in the office so that I can use the profiler. (The profiler is pretty cool by the way).
After a lot of profiing, I found four paths to the module's FlexModuleFactory.
Two of those paths go to EmbeddedFontRegistry, whose data is static. I could get into it and remove font entry and free up the moduleFactory from there. This is a hack, that entry in/on EmbeddedFontRegistry.font should have been cleaned up by the code removing the fontFamily from the TextArea. (Note that EmbeddedFontRegistry is marked [ExcludeClass], which I assume means I should not really be messing with it.
The other two I cannot get to as they are anonymous. They also don't appear to be referenced, as the Object References shows them both as GC root objects. Here is a screen shot:
I did a search through the sdk code and 'fbs' only shows up as a parameter on the init function of various Marshal support classes, but is not used in the init()
Anyway, these references to the FlexModuleFactory do not get held if I do not use the embeded font in the module.
Here is the updated code:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<s:Application xmlns:fx="http://ns.adobe.com/mxml/2009"

• Embedding Fonts in PostScript and/or PDF

Under 10.3 the Print dialogue had a Save As File option which allowed the embedding of fonts in PostScript. Choices were All, All but Standard 13 and such. This made sure that the PostScript (and generated PDF) files would render properly on systems with a different set of fonts.
Under 10.4 this capabilty seems to be either lost of so well hidden that I have not been able to find it. Did I miss it?
How does one embed fonts in PostScript and/or PDF files? Is there a Tiger options somewhere? Is this a case of having to use a third party utility? Like the full Acrobat set or something else.

AFAIK, the system PDF creation always embeds fonts.
At least in the few tests I've done, using the Save
as PDF option in the print dialog produced PDF files
that show in Acrobat as having embedded font subsets.
Thanks. I checked with the same ressults but the problem I am having seems to be related to the Type 3 custom fonts that are in LaTEX generated files. The Type 3 fonts do not seem to survive being saved as PDF. They seem to cause some confusion in DEVONthink and I was hoping to get files that could be scanned by it.

• Special fonts don't show up in PDFs

I created some free printables for teachers and homeschoolers a while back that use special fonts (wingdings). The fonts are Open Source fonts from DaFont.com. Some of the fonts are not showing up as they should. They come up as plain letters instead of the wingdings. I created the PDFs in InDesign CS5. What can I do to fix this?
Here's a link to the page with the printables I created:
Before You Speak: THINK Free Printables
I'm having the most trouble with the wingdings below the word THINK not showing up properly.
Thanks for your help.

Is the fonts embeded when export to pdf?
Also on acrobat check document properties>fonts
If the fonts it's just on small area or line you can convert to outline (select text and from type menu>create outline).

• Problems with Embedded Font MS PGothic

Hello,
After editing a document in Japanese, some characters will not show up. Normally i would attribute this to a missing font pack, but after reinstalling the Japanese font pack on the computer, we strill get the error message:
"Cannot extract the embedded font 'RNUQGV+MSPGothic-WinCharSetFFFF-H'"
Some characters may not display or print correctly.
We create the file with MS Word, and in word we have no problems. It is only after using PDF-Server to create the files does this become a problem. Other Japanese fonts do no seem to have this issue.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
thanks in advance

• Cannot extract the embedded font - Adobe Reader XI

Hello,
I have an XPS file converted to a PDF with an embedded font inside, when I open the file, as I scroll to a page having '&' in the text (that's my case, but it's probably the same with any special character), a message box shows up saying "Cannot extract the embedded font 'HDGSLM+[my font]'. Some characters may not display or print correctly." and I can't see the special character in the page.
I checked that my font was actually embedded in the PDF (File -> Properties -> Fonts) and seems to be ok, normal characters look fine and the application doesn't say anything until I scroll to the page with '&' inside. Also, other PDF readers show the document fine.
I looked around the forum and saw that other people got the same problem and to them was a bug introduced in Adobe Reader 8.x, but nothing was confirmed by developers.
Can you help me? Is it a bug? If yes, is Adobe working on it?
Thank you.
P.S.
My Adobe Reader version is 11.0.4

Reader can not create PDF files, so you should look for bugs in the software that was used to generate it.

• Cannot Extract Embedded Font in PDF Report Generated Using Crystal Reports XI

The issue is that sometimes the PDF reports generated by Crystal Report XI are not showing the fonts properly. Arial font is used in the Crystal report template(.rpt file) for field label and data elements. When the report is opened in Adobe Reader, it displays the message - "Cannot extract the embedded font 'AAAAAA+ArialBold'. some characters may not display or print correctly." Other PDF Readers like Foxit show blank spaces instead. I tried to change the font to Courier New, Times New Roman etc but still getting the same message.
The issue is consistent when the application is deployed in Windows server. When deployed in Unix server the issue happens very occasionally. The font files are available and installed in the UNIX box.
Please tell me why this error message is shown and also tell me how to get it fixed.

Hi Scot
Just replied to your email re. conf call.
In the meantime.
1st question.
Some of our developers are creating the reports under crystal 2008, while some are 2011.
Could this be a problem, when they are run by the SDK?
Should we upgrade all our developers to crystal 2011?
The version of CR a report is created in should not matter at all. I am 100% certain this is not the issue.
2nd question
When the report is run, to create the pdf... why would it actually embed the font on the pdf?
if they weren't embedded.. wouldn't it just pull up the proper font, if the user's pc had that font on their
pc?
if it does the common fonts aren't embedded, we would just have to worry about the things like
barcode 3 of 9
I can not answer this as that essentially is the way the product is designed. It may look like a limitation, but there are no work-arounds and I would not consider this to be a bug. Perhaps an enhancement, but a pretty faint hope there. And even if, enhancements take very, very low priority and take long, long time before implementation.
3rd question
Would the fonts, just need to be installed on the server? we've seen some indication, that they
also need to be in a java sub-directory
The fonts must be on the server as that is where the report engine does it's work, then the report is streamed to the user's browser. E.g.; there is no work done on the browser. Also, the process must have rights to access the fonts.
One last point. You mention deployment to Linux. Linux is not supported. Please see: SAP Crystal Reports, Developer Version for Microsoft Visual Studio - Supported Platforms
I suspect this is more an issue with CR not working with the framework for Linux.

• Has anyone got embedded fonts in SVG to work on Mac OS X Lion?

I have used CS3, CS4 suite versions of illustrator on Snow leopard, and embedding fonts worked correctly,
but on several computers at work here, none of the CS5 or CS5.5 suite versions of illustrator embed fonts in SVG format on Lion.
I have also tried CS4 on Lion and still does not work...
Saving as SVG without fonts works fine,
Saving with fonts shows error message and no fonts are ever brought over.
This shows brand new ai file with a text box and three letters in standard font:
This shows saving as SVG to documents folder (does not matter where saving to, issue still exists):
This shows the SVG options (Note font is SVG, subsetting is common english and glyphs used.)
Error message:
Does not matter how many fonts are attempted to be embedded, no fonts (with glyphs translation) ever show up on the svg file.
Any suggestions?
Other than
reinstall lion completely, then reinstall CS5 then CS5.5(DONE, does not work)
reinstall lion completely, then reinstall CS5.5 only(DONE, does not work)

This is what i currently have to do:
Currently i use a secondary PPC computer with leopard 10.5 and Illustrator CS3 on it, and save the file as svg using those settings (fonts).
Open the CS3 svg in text edit
Copy fonts created in CS3 and then paste in CS5 svg file which i created on the intel computer with lion (mac 10.7)
Also tested this in mountain lion 10.8, still same error, have to do this stupid workaround for now....

• Arial embedded font displaying jumbled on another user's machine

I have a PDF document that uses an Arial embedded font and it looks fine on my machine, but looks like this on one of my end user's machines:
In researching this problem all the advice points to a problem with the font, but it's just the common Arial font and it is listed as embedded. Or at least, I think it is, Arial shows up in the font list for the PDF properties 3 times, and if I use the Touchup Text tool, select the text and look at Properties, it says "Cannot embed font" although both embed and subset checkboxes are checked and disabled.
Can anyone help please?
-VG_mnet
P.s. I should have mentioned that it shows jumbled on my machine too when the user emailed it to me. I'm on Adobe Pro version 9.
Here is the font list on the PDF properties:

Thank you again for your help Bill@VT and CtDave. I did play around with the Distiller but I don't think those options help me much since I do not use either of the options to create the PDF that you mention Bill. I actually am usually starting with an existing PDF template (that has our logos and a demo title) and then I fill in the rest of the paragraphs, charts, labels and form fields. So my understanding (now that I have explored) is that the Distiller is used for converting a postscript file to a pdf. I already have a PDF tho. Just for yuks, I saved my PDF as a .ps and ran it through the distiller - it correctly embedded all my fonts, but my form fields were all gone.
So I moved on to Plan B and looked at the preflights that Dave referred to. After looking at a lot of instructional web pages that all told me the Preflights were of the View or Tools menu, I finally found it under Advanced->Print Production->Preflights. I chose the option to Embed fonts (even if text is invisible), and ran it through. It seemed to work great and maintained my form fields. Most of my fonts are also now embedded as I had hoped. I think this will be the way we move forward with all the existing PDFs we have in our system, but I did notice that one font still didn't get embedded. One of the Arial's (the 1st CID in the screenshot above) is still listed as not embedded even though the other fonts listed are practically identical and are embedded. This may be a problem on just this one PDF, and the other PDFs in my system appear to not have this issue when I run the preflight, so I'll keep playing with this one PDF, but does anyone have a theory as to why the preflight wasn't able to embed that one CID font?
Thanks again! You have both been helpful and I've learned some new tricks!

• Embedded font not working in Spark Label control?

Hi,
I'm trying to use embedded fonts with the Spark Label (formerly SimpleText) control. I'm using SDK 4 build 10485 now, but I could not manage it in Beta 1 neither.
I'v been playing with cff: true/false, embedAsCFF:true/false but no results.
I've added my test application where it does work with the Halo <mx:Label> control, but not with the Spark <s:Label> control.
So, no compiler errors, but the Spark label control shows a serif (Helvetia?) font where it should be sans as does the Halo control.
Can anybody help me out here?
