Empty Trash only on Connected Devices

I know that Mac OS X keeps a separate trash for connected devices, like SD Cards or USB Thumbdrives, and that to empty that trash one normally empties the trash for the whole computer, is there a way to empty only the trash on an external device?

I know this is an old thread - but I thought I'd add a current, simple, and perfect solution user Jacques Rioux just posted on my thread on the same topic, as follows:
I use this script AppleScript, save it as Application :
on open these_volumes
set t_id to user ID of (system info)
    repeat with i in these_volumes
if (kind of (info for i without size)) is "Volume" then
            set tPath to (POSIX path of i) & ".Trashes/" & t_id
do shell script "/bin/rm -Rf  " & (quoted form of tPath) & "/*"
        end if
    end repeat
end open
Drag/Drop Volume(s) on the application.
This script removes the items from your trash (user ID) folder on the volume.
if other users use the volume  this script will not delete the items from their  trash folder, otherwise the script would need an administrator password to do that.
If you want to eject the volume after emptying the trash, use this script.
on open these_volumes
set t_id to user ID of (system info)
    set volToEject to {}
    repeat with i in these_volumes
if (kind of (info for i without size)) is "Volume" then
            set tPath to (POSIX path of i) & ".Trashes/" & t_id
do shell script "/bin/rm -Rf  " & (quoted form of tPath) & "/*"
set end of volToEject to contents of i
        end if
    end repeat
if volToEject is not {} then tell application "Finder" to eject volToEject
end open

  • -8003 Error "Can't Empty Trash" only with specific item

Tried to get rid of a folder for an applicaiton that I'd downloaded & installed on a trial basis, then decided not to buy.
Any time I trash this folder with the app and related files, I get the "Can't Empty Trash -8003" error.
If I remove that folder, I can empty the trash fine.
    Any ideas?
(the download app is Extensis Portfolio 8.5)

    You could try using TrashIt!

Upgrade to SL went OK but I now find that I only have the option to "Secure Empty" - no longer the option of "Empty". Secure empty takes a heck of a long time for large files. How can I restore the "Empty" option?
    Thanks in advance

  • HT3159 Can not open Pages.  Tried to empty trash, closed programs on dock, then reloaded I Work.  All three programs show up in Finder that they have been downloaded; however, Keynote and Numbers programs will only open.  Any suggestions?

Can not open Pages.  Emptied Trash, closed open programs on Dock,  Reinstalled I Work from disc.  Finder identifies that the programs have been down loaded, however, only Keynote and Numbers will open.  Any suggestions?

Thanks, Eric. I'm not sure what I should be checking using your suggestion--as I said, I'm an utter novice with the iMac. However,  I saw a reference to problems with the Library entries, so I checked mine and the iWork files were missing, something confirmed when I checked the crash log. In desperation, I did another software update, and that seems to have fixed the problem completely. Now wondering if I dare upgrade to Lion!

  • Empty Trash Securely is the only option

Since updating to Snow Leopard I only have one option to empty trash. It is a very slow method to empty trash securely and not able to complete the task. Is there an option to turn of empty securely?

  • EA4500 only displays maximum of 9 connected devices?

My EA4500 with the latest firmware will only display nine connected devices at a time. It also seems to randomly shuffle which devices to show as connected, even though several more than nine are connected and online. Does anyone else's device list limit itself to displaying only nine devices? The Linksys phone apps also display a maximum of nine devices. I like the routers new user interface and understand that it has received a lot of praise, however this is the second bug I've experienced in as many months (the first being a failure of the device list to update once devices are upgraded to Windows 8, requiring a reset to default settings in order to fix).

Still no luck.  And incidentally, my Win8 computers have dropped off the device list again, along with my Win7 desktop connected via ethernet.  That makes all 4 computers now missing from the device list, plus a network attached storage device also missing.  All of these devices initially appeared on the device list, but have now disappeared. TV, Blu-ray and cellphones connect and update normally.  Everything connects and operates normally, they just don't appear in the device list.
Linksys can't expect people to go through a device reset time and time again for what I know now to be just a temporary fix for this issue.  At this price point especially.

only have 3 devices authorized, but my new computer will not authorize. Itune says there are 5 devices connected already. why?

Perhaps the five includes computers that you no longer own, or a computer that has had a replacement hard drive put in it.
In your iTunes account, De-authorise All and then authorise the computer(s) that you still use.

  • Emptying trash for selected volumes only

I want to empty trash but not on all volumes.

Hi, Bill. Welcome to the Discussions.
As baltwo noted, Mac OS X has a separate Trash, not only for every volume, but for every user on that volume. What you see in Trash is the union of all the different trashes associated with your account on every mounted volume. See my "Solving Trash Problems" FAQ for additional information.
The shareware utility Smart Trash will permit one to selectively empty the various Trashes. I've not used it, but it has received decent reviews.
PS: Do not use Trash as temporary storage! Do not put something in the Trash unless you mean to throw it away immediately.
    Good luck!

  • Want to run an archive and install, but can't empty trash to free space

I don't know where to begin... at some point recently something caused problems with several applications, so after trying to repair permissions and repair disk with no luck, I decided to archive & install. Now I want the old problems back: Word/Excel/Photoshop will not open because of some library error (Carbonlib?), and my network settings keep going screwy such that if my computer goes to sleep, I couldn't pick up my wireless signal anymore without restarting (and then ta-da, there it was like there was never any problem).
So in trying to archive and install I keep stalling at the very beginning... I'll leave it for hours hoping it would proceed but it wouldn't. I've repaired disk several times, with the same errors ultimately coming up. So without being able to archive and install I figured I'd better back everything up and do an erase & install. Started backing things up in prep for moving them onto a server, but when I plugged the server in, my computer said it couldn't get on. Same exact server wire had just come out of my work computer which connects just fine. So now I've got duplicates of all my files on the desktop, so I try to trash them and when I select 'empty trash' or 'secure empty trash', I get the box that says "preparing to empty trash" and then everything except my wallpaper goes away, and eventually comes back as if I've restarted. Now I definitely can't archive and install because with duplicate copies of all my files I have only 1.7gb available and need 1.9 to install just the required files.
I'm at a total loss! Incidentally, my ipod won't mount if I try to plug it in.
Are there other options in disk utility that I can try? I don't know enough to feel comfortable just trying something, and I don't know what the "Restore" option does.
Oh goodness, I hope somebody knows something that can help me out of this.

  • Two issues on Aperture: single photo won't show in viewer, emptied trash won't indicate as empty

Using Version 3.5.1. Several after-market edit plug-ins attached. Two new problems:
Very recently, when editing, the single photo viewer mode will start showing only black (blank), or shows the photo very briefly then goes black, or shows another different photo, or a damaged-looking photo. Multiple photo viewer modes still work ok. Problem goes away upon quitting and restarting Aperture, but then shortly soonafter recurs while editing.
Also, trash continually indicates 477 undeleted photos even after emptying. Additional photos added to trash get added to this count (i.e. it then indicates, say, 492 photos in trash, while showing only the actual 15 legitimate files in the trash folder), and then can successfully deleted the actual trashed files back to the mysterious 477, although with no photos actually left in the trash folder and the Empty Trash function still active for these 477 ghost files. This problem persists despite restarting.
    Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

First of all, make sure you have a current, working backup of your Aperture library.
Is your Aperture library on your system drive or on an external drive? If external drive, how is the library connected? And is the library referenced or managed?
    Several after-market edit plug-ins attached.
Have you checked, if your plug-ins are the latest versions, and compatible with MacOS X Mavericks?
What trouble-shooting measures have you already tried? If you have not already done so, use the Aperture Library First Aid tools and repair the permissions and the database, see this page of the Aperture User Manual:  Repairing and Rebuilding Your Aperture Library: Aperture 3 User Manual

  • Disconnected camera appears as connected device - can't get rid of it!

I recently connected a Samsung Galaxy Tab (SCH-I905) to my Mac, and because it had a photo on it, iPhoto started up and wanted to import the photo.  I did that, and ejected the device and all seemed well.
But now whenever I start up iPhoto, the SCH-I905 appears as a connected device even though it is not connected.  An empty dotted line rectangle appears in the main pane showing there is allegedly 1 photo on it, but there is no thumbnail image for it, and if you try to import it you get an error "The following file could not be imported. The file is an unrecognised format" (even though the original file was jpg).
Further, this problem seems to be stopping iPhoto recognising my digital camera when I connect it - it doesn't appear.  The Image Capture app is similarly affected - it thinks the SCH-I905 is connected and refuses to recognise my digital camera.
I have tried trashing iPhoto preferences - no difference.
According to System Profiler and USB Prober, the SCH-I905 is not connected, but my digital camera is.  So the USB is working but iPhoto is ignoring it.
I can control-click the SCH-I905 icon in the left pane of iPhoto to "Unmount" it and the icon goes away, but my digital camera is still not recognised even if I unplug it and plug it back in again, and if I quit iPhoto and restart, the dreaded SCH-I905 comes back.
HELP!  How do I permanently unmount "SCH-I905" and restore sanity?

    Try trash the following file

  • What exactly does "Secure Empty Trash" do?

There's very little technical detail on the web about this. I'd like to understand exactly what secure empty trash does.
What method does it use to overwrite?
How does it deal with temp files?
Why does it take so long?
Why, when there's only one file in the trash, does it always claim it's erasing 9 files?
What other files is it erasing in addition to the visible trash contents?
Can it work across network connections and external drives?
Has the method changed in Leopard?
    etc.. etc..
Feel free to get all technical, if you know the answers!
    Thanks!

What method does it use to overwrite?
It writes over the files with 0's.
How does it deal with temp files?
Not sure what you mean. It treats any file in the trash the same. Could you elaborate?
Why does it take so long?
Because it has to first write over the item with 0's, then delete the item.
Why, when there's only one file in the trash, does it always claim it's erasing 9 files?
What other files is it erasing in addition to the visible trash contents?
    It's a bug.
Can it work across network connections and external drives?
    Yes.
Has the method changed in Leopard?
    Not that I know of.

  • Computer stalling between transfers & emptying trash

I'm trying to organize my external hard drives by moving data around.  If I copy too many GB's at a time the transfer, not the computer, freezes.  No matter how long I leave it there, it will just stall a X amount of data transferred & won't move.  Now I'm trying to transfer small amounts at a time, but when I'm done copying from one location to the new one, I send the old one to the trash, but now there's too much data in my trash can, that I try & empty it and it stops as well, or most of the time, never gets out of the preparing to delete phase.  And if I try to stop the process, it gets stuck on stopping, won't let me restart the computer & I have to manually turn it off & back on.  And some of the large folders in the trash don't give me the put back option so I can try & do smaller amounts at a time.  And I know cutting & pasting from one location to another might be easier, but I don't trust it with these problems.  And when I try to get the folder info, to make sure the old & new locations are the same size so I can delete the old one, it takes forever, if at all just to calculate the size of the folder.  It's also sometimes been getting stuck on the little rainbow colored wheel at times, where it moves, I can move the folders that are open, but can't do anything else.  I'm more used to PC's, so I don't think that if something moves it's freezing, but perhaps that IS freezing for a Mac? If anyone has any info on how to fix this I'd greatly appreciate it.  Thanks

    Hey Dennis,
Appriciate the advice, but no, they have both only ever been used on my Mac Mini & I ran the Mac Install driver on both hard drives.  I'm aware of the different formats as I've tried connecting hard drives from my PC before.  And though they show up, it didn't let me move anything on or off.  My problem is, though I'm able to successfully copy the files/folders from one external drive to another, if I try to do too many GBs at once it gets stuck & doesn't finish, or sometimes even start the process.
    1. Sorry, what is "Mac Install drive" do you mean Disk Utility or something else?
    2. What exactly is the Partition Map Scheme (MS-DOS, Apple or GUID) and Format (FAT-32, or Mac OS Extended) of those drives?
    3. What if any messages are you getting, when you try to copy or empty trash?

I've actually copied everything I need to for now, my bigger problem is that I can't empty the trash.  I'm assuming it's a related problem though, that it's trying to delete too much at once.  And like I said, I've tried the 'Put Back' option, to delete smaller amounts at a time(just as I've had to with transfers), but it doesn't list that as an option on a couple of the biggest folders.  Any other ideas on what could be causing or how to fix the problem?

  • Empty trash sound

I am using an USB headset at work. This works fine, all sounds (realplayer, xmeeting, system) use this as the default sound output device. Only Finder's "empty trash" sound is still played through the MacBooks speakers. The headset is set as the default input and output sound device.

Open up GarageBand if installed then, open a program (optional).
Quit GarageBand app. Sound should return.
