Energy Settings...what is considered "Activity"

In the energy settings, it states "Put the computer to sleep when it is inactive for:"
What does the computer consider activity? If I'm performing MPEG-4 encoding of a movie, this could take hours. If I'm not using my computer (i.e mouse movement, keystrokes, etc.), will it go to sleep while the encoding is still being completed?

Hello Mark,
You might find some answers here:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25801
Activity is any user input, whether it's the keyboard, mouse, tuning on/off USB/Firewire devices, network and, some apps.
May I recommend setting your computer to sleep to "Never" whenever using Pro apps such as FCP, DVDSP, Compressor, etc.

  • What is an "active connection" to the FMS server?

    Hi,
I am wondering exactly what are considered "active connections" to an FMS server?
Is it only the RTMP/RTMFP NetConnections, or do NetStreams also count?
    Thanks

Only netConnections. You can't connect a netstream without a netconnection so they don't count on the connection count number.

  • Energy settings in OSX and their effect on temperature.

After a while the other threads kind of turn into a cluster**ck, so I thought I'd bring up this idea in a new thread.
There have been a couple of reports here and there about cooler performance of the MBP under "best performance" rather than normal or better energy savings. Before the temperature script came out there wasn't a whole lot to back this up, but I gave it a shot today and "better performance" indeed gives (me at least) lower temperatures.
I ran yes> /dev/null for a while when the MBP was set to better energy savings, and the temperature skyrocketed to 88-90. I listened closely to the vents behind the MBP and the fans did not come on at all. This happened for a while until I stopped it.
I quit the two shells and then switched the settings to "better performance" and tried it again. My temperatures stayed between 79-81 the whole time, and the fans kicked on to boot. They didn't turn on in the turbo-mode hurricane sort of way (like I can get them to while playing a game), but they came on slightly. If you pick up the MBP and listen to the rear vents you can hear them both give off the low hum of the fans on both sides.
I'm not sure if this is exactly what is happening, but I think in the other modes the fans will not kick on until absolutely necessary in order to save energy/battery life. The consequence of that is a freakin hot MBP.
I'd like to hear other people's experience with this if they've given it a shot.

    Hi Cruzmisi,
Your theory could not be far from true. I have what I consider a cool MBP and I use it always in "Better Performance". Also, I never run any "whine widget" since the noise doesn't bother me.
    Regards.

  • Energy Settings - do your hard drives go to sleep ?

    Hello everyone,
I am wondering what most of you do in terms of energy settings ( on a windows computer ), do you have your hard drives set to go to sleep after so many hours ? or do you have them set to *never* go off ?
At the moment I have my drives all set to never go to sleep, but I am now wondering if I should be setting them to "sleep" in 4 or 5 hours.
I am a bit hesitant to do this, because I wonder if I am encoding video, and the 4 hour mark kicks in while an encode is happening - WILL the computer go to sleep ? or will it continue on and finished the video ?
    Thanks for any information.
    DAve.

For single disks it may be possible to use the sleep function, but I would not advise it. The power saved is negligent and is offset by the wear-and-tear of the start-stop cycles. For multiple disks in a Raid configuration, you have the problem of staggered spin-up sequences. So, Dan is right, it is not worth the trouble.

  • How to delete my own energy settings???

Can anybody tell me is it possible to delete my own energy settings????

In System Preferences > Energy Saver, set the Optimization pop-up menu to Normal (or one of the other non-Custom settings). That way you can see what the system default settings are.
    Hope this helps...

  • How does fast user switching know which energy settings to use?

When using fast user switching and keeping 2 accounts logged in, which accounts' energy settings take priority (assuming their settings don't match)? For example, let's say I set my account's display to sleep after 15 minutes and my wife sets hers for 30 minutes. If we both keep our accounts logged in and then leave the Mac on the login screen, who wins?
The reason I ask is because my display won't stay asleep. Unlike my example above, I've made sure both accounts have identical energy settings (sleep the display after 15 minutes & the iMac itself is set to 'never sleep'). I can get it to sleep (usually by pressing control-shift-eject), but it will not stay asleep. I don't think any applications are causing this (I've shut down all apps to test - only Time Machine is scheduled to run automatically). I'm starting to wonder if fast user switching could be the cause? I usually keep both accounts logged in at all times and return to the login screen before heading to bed. I then force the display to sleep with control-shift-eject, but several hours later I wake up to a bright room because the display has turned on again. I haven't tried turning off fast user switching yet, but I can see where that might confuse the OS?
Oh, I've also disabled waking on bluetooth activity just in case my wireless mighty mouse was losing its connection & waking the display upon reconnection - no luck.
Any thoughts or suggestions are appreciated - it's driving me nuts, especially since I can't just turn off the iMac display itself without powering down the entire system.

Energy Saver settings are system-wide and not specific to the user. If one user changes the settings, it's changed for everyone. Screensaver settings are user-specific.
That said, the reason that the system wakes by itself can be one of several things: the system is set to wake up (you can set this under energy saver) by preferences or some application/service, the system receives a wake-up message from something on the network (you can configure this under Security, I believe, or Network, I don't recall), or you have "chatter" related to a device plugged into your computer.
"chatter" is when a USB device or FireWire device sends a signal to the computer it's connected to. Normally, peripherals are quiet if not actively in use, but some things (cheap USB hubs, certain mice, etc) will spuriously send a signal to the connected computer and cause it to wake.

  • Battery And Energy Settings

From what I am reading here a 99% charge is normal after charging fully overnight? I've had my system for over two weeks and only let it once drain completely. Sometimes I fully charge it when it's between 6-20%. In the begining it would show a complete 100% charge. Can anyone confirm?
Also, I noticed that anytime after I reboot my system, the lock icon on the Energy settings is open even though I locked it before the shut down. I do have my energy settings set for custom, would that cause that to happen?

    Hi MrBlonde,
"When I booted it up that is when it said 99%. Still normal? "
This depends on your definition of normal.
With OS 10.4 came the charger/battery issues. One of the causes for failures that I had noticed (G4s, MBs and MBPs) and reported quite frequently (numerous replacements) was that the battery would remain charging for hours or days while at 99% "Calculating Until Full" melting the chargers and overcharging the battery. The only thing that would prevent this was to open and close Energy Saver (no changes) or unplug and re-plug to get it to acknowledge it was fully charged. It appears that the battery update has made it so the charger switches to power-mode when it is at 99% for a few minutes.
My opinion is that what you are experiencing is now "normal", however, not correct.
In System Preferences > Security > Require a password to unlock each secure system preference. Check this and see what happens. If the pref still opens in an unlocked state report it to [email protected]

  • How do I download a movie to my phone?  when I click 'rent' through itunes, I get a message that there is not enough available local storage, but I can manage my local device storage usage in 'Settings'.  I have activated icloud, but this has not helped.

How do I download a movie to my iphone 3G?  When I click 'rent' in itunes, I get a message that there is not enough available local storage, but I can manage storage on my device in 'Settings'.  I have activated icloud, but don't know how to change my storage so that I can rent and watch the movie on my phone.  thanks for any help you can give.

I always do my Rentals with the itunes program on the computer.
Make rental from itunes store. It will show in movies under library, DO NOT click to play it. Plug in the device to the computer. Click the name of the device on left. Click on movies. There is an  option to copy to the device. Sync. obviously you still need space on ipad to put rental but you can have it take computers hard drive space until you need it.

  • Is there any way to track what reports are actively running on BOE?

    Good Afternoon.
I am looking for a way to track the names of what reports are currently being run on Business Objects. We are on Business Objects Enterprise XI R2 SP3 and from what Iu2019m aware, the servers can show the administrators how many connections and how many jobs are running, and the auditing command can track when a report has completed/failed (from what I understand), but nothing really tells us what reports are actively being run.
The purpose of this is to measure impact for an emergency restart of the server, track down reports that are taking up system resources, and debugging issues involved with the SDK.
Background: We have several reports hosted on Business Objects, both Crystal Reports and Web Intelligence.  These reports go to different universes and databases and use several different accounts depending on the project (no central generic accounts to the databases).  Sometimes when people are running several large reports (some being upwards of 1 million rows) the users will open one, leave it to run and go to open several others, killing our session limit and resources on the server. In addition, there have been times in development that restarts have been required but there was no way to tell what reports were running, just the number of them, and in several different spots (RAS, Page server, etc.).
Wish list (If my first priority is answered, Iu2019m also looking for the following):
    - One to one associations of what reports are being run by what users.
    - A centralized location to see what reports are being run by users opening them and what reports are being run by users scheduling them.
    - The ability to u201Ckillu201D a report that is taking too long to run by a user.
    - Possibly an interactive dashboard showing the number of active reports verses the serveru2019s limit, what reports are set in queue, etc.
    - The u201Cstageu201D a report is running in, so if someone is running a report but its stuck at the prompt for a variable stage, querying data from the database, getting data back from the database, producing and processing the data to the screen, etc.
If Iu2019ve missed something in the Business Objects tools or if someone knows of a way to extract this type of data from the Business Objects server (3rd party tool or custom fix) I would appreciate the assistance. Thank you for your time.

    Brian,
I don't know if you tried using the Query Builder.
The query below (or some modification of it) may be of some help.
    SELECT
    SI_SCHEDULEINFO, SI_NAME
    FROM
    CI_INFOOBJECTS
    WHERE
    SI_SCHEDULE_STATUS = 1
The SI_SCHEDULEINFO.SI_SUBMITTER property in the query result will give you the BOUSER value of the user that submitted the job.
    SI_SCHEDULE_STATUS takes the following values:
0     The job is currently being processed by the job server.
    1     The job completed successfully.
3     The job failed. Check error message.
    8     The job is paused.
9     The job has not started because dependencies are not satisfied (e.g. Events)
    Best,
    Srinivas

  • I have what I consider the best smart phone on the market, but I resently upgraded my Windows Vista PC to Windows 8 and my Itunes went away.  Is there anything that I did wrong or aren't the two compatible?

I have what I consider the best smart phone.  I recently upgraded my PC from Windows Vista to Windows 8 and my Itunes went away.  Did I do something wrong or aren't the two compatible?

If the update did not preserve all your Applications you may simply have to download iTunes again and instrall it on Windows 8.
There's nothing strange about an update not preserving installed Applications.

  • Energy Settings/won't sleep

    Hi,
I have set my energy settings to "Better Battery Life," which says that my display will turn off after 1 minute and the computer will go to sleep after 5 minutes of non-use. However, the computer never goes to sleep! The display always turns off but it never goes to sleep....
    Any suggestions?
    PowerBook G4 12"   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   1.5Ghz 512MB RAM

    Hi BGreg and Sandman,
First off, thanks for the response! I tried unplugging all of my USB and Firewire Devices... no luck. Yes, I can manually put the computer to sleep by closing the lid or hit the blue apple button and clicking "Sleep."
I don't have a firewall or anti-virus program installed. I am mostly running Microsoft Word, Mail, Safari, and iChat AV.
You said that you performed a clean install. My computer has been cluttered with files and programs for sometime now. I have thought about doing a clean install but don't know how I can keep my files in the process. The programs are no problem as I can re-install them easily. Any ideas?
Thank you both again for you response,
    Mike
