Enforcing a mandatory prompt in BI answers

We have reports that have several prompted fields in answers. Some of these fields required fields. Is there a way (other than setting default values) to enforce a mandatory prompt?

In the report, click on the Prompts tab and create a column filter prompt
Uncheck the 'Allow User To Skip Prompt' checkbox. This will make it mandatory for the user to select some value

Hi,
I do know that there is a option to make the prompt mandatory in the prompt selection window by making "Optional Prompt:False" in crystal 2011.If this is the case then report should not run when values are not entered and OK button is clicked in the prompt screen.But sill the reports runs but gives no data.
The report should not run when prompt is not entered.Is there a way to achieve this?

If the mandatory prompt is a string paramater it will run without entering a value.
You have to use the Edit Mask option.
In your case you can use A as an Edit Mask character.
1. On the View menu, click Field Explorer.
2. Select Parameter Fields
An edit mask can be any of a set of masking characters used to restrict the values you can enter
as parameter values (the edit mask also limits the values you can enter as default prompting values).
You can enter any of the following masking characters, or any combination of them:
• "A" (allows an alphanumeric character and requires the entry of a character in the parameter
value).
• "a" (allows an alphanumeric character and does not require the entry of a character in the
parameter value).
• "0" (allows a digit [0 to 9] and requires the entry of a character in the parameter value).
• "9" (allows a digit or a space, and does not require the entry of a character in the parameter
value).
• "#" (allows a digit, space, or plus/minus sign, and does not require the entry of a character in the
parameter value).
• "L" (allows a letter [A to Z], and requires the entry of a character in the parameter value).
• "?" (allows a letter, and does not require the entry of a character in the parameter value).

Mandatory Prompt error in Polestar

Hi
while creating Information space adding objects ,if we are adding mandatory prompts then it is displaying error as:
Failed to retrieve list of values
One or several mandatory prompt inputs are missing.
For promts other than promting for list of values it is not displaying error
we are currently checking with efashion database and later on we will check with BW datasorce also

Crystal Reports scheduling disregard the default values and requires prompts to be answered every time.

Hi guys,
When scheduling a Crystal report, the page to configure the prompt answers does not have any prompts answered by default - they all appear as "[EMPTY]". This means that any required prompts must be answered during configuration of the alert schedule. Since prompt is required and the default value (which is equivalent to not answering the prompt) is not available in the selection list.
Is there any way around it?
Ideally I would like the prompts to keep the default values, so I could schedule the report for all the prompt answers (Whole list of value) instead of having at least one prompt value.
Is there any configuration in crystal reports or on database side that could help me resolve the issue.

Rabeb SLIMANI, we can't use universes by user requirement. If we could, it would have to be through IDT (Information Design Tool) but, nonetheless, the users want a direct BICS connection between BEx and WebI.
Victor Gabriel Saiz Castillo, we can't do that because the users want to choose between accessing the published instances or refreshing the reports on demand.
The way i see it, it would take a second set of BEx query + WebI report to provide both functionalities (one for ready for input, another for not ready for input). Am I correct?
@Sathish Kumar (sorry, i can't tag you right), i was checking with the BW team and we already have the logic for If left null, populate with Customer Exits.
But they are currently mandatory, so we will change them to optional and test the behavior.
If you have any other ideas, they are more than welcome! I will keep you posted on the outcome!

Unable to see the Default & Mandatory prompts/variable in Web i report

We are building web i reports on top of Bex queries, we have some mandatory and optional variables declared in our bex query in filters under default restriction
These default mandatory variables/ prompts are not seen in web i report

Did you create an OSS message for this too? It is good to have these things under close observation.
And which version are you on XI3.1 or BI4.0?
For 3.1, only variables in the filter section (left pane) and are input ready will get generated as prompts in the universe.
You can check this very directly by looking at the generated filters (hidden, mandatory on universe).
For 4.0, When you create a WebI report on the BEx query, the prompts do pop up?
So all ready for input, whether mandatory or optional are visible?
Then you run the query, create your webI report and try to use it and the prompts for the BEx variables are not shown.
If this is the case then you have the problem that the default values are 'saved' on the first execution and cannot be changed later on (because they cannot be purged, WebI just treats the prompt as 'answered' and it will not ask for it again.
Planned to be delivered with patch 2.5 (not available yet) the behavior will be slightly changed, when you purge the data from a WebI document, it will also clear the defaults, thus triggering the prompting again...

Mandatory Prompt in Webi

I am working on a standard BEx query where there is a mandatorty prompt(Cal Year/Month) set up at the BEx Designer.Now if run the same query I can see the mandatorty prompt(Cal Year/Month) in the BEx Analyzer but the same prompt(Cal Year/Month) is shown as optional at the Webi level.How can I overcome this issue.My user wants to see the prompt as Mandatory at the Webi level.Please let me know how to overcome this issue.

As suggested,
Go to Universe >> Filters >> See Prompt definition.
If you see <Optional> then remove it.
Or
Can you see, Apply on Universe radio button then check that.

i m new to obiee..
My question is :
In Answers,
I have created three prompts for my report.When i run the report,i can see only one prompt at a time,only if i select a value for it,i can go to the next prompt.The user wants to see all 3 prompts at a time and select values.Is there any way for t?
Also I am using 'filters view' in my report to display the value selected by user from prompt as report sub headings.But it displays the static filters given for the report also.How to display only the dynamic filters in filters view?

The only alternative is.. use dashboard prompts and show the reports on dashboard.

Concatenated Prompts in OBIEE answers

Hello All,
Can we have Concatenated OBIEE Prompts in Answers(Not in Dashboard)
ex: Vendor_Number || Vendor_Name..
it has to be displayed in this way when the user runs the request. either can go into the DB to process the request. This is something like Lookups in the Oracle EBS we have Value -- Description
Can we achieve this in OBIEE if so How?

Could you explain more clearly what your aim is here, is this a saved query to which users have access through Answers? If so why is prompting necessary when they will have access to the query criteria.
You can concatenate the columns in the column formula, a filter on that coulmn would then require the value entered to be a valid concatenation of the two columns.
It seems like an odd thing to do in Answers though, rather than a dashboard.

How to bring ALL option in Table prompt in OBIEE Answers result area?

This is my requirement. For example, Please consider scott table. There is a column called DEPTNO. I am taking DEPTNO,DNAME,EMPNO,EMPNAME for display. If i edit the table and move this column DEPTNO to Table Prompt section. I am getting a drop down list with the following list of values 10,20,30,40 there is no option all. If i need to get the option ALL What i need to do?

I got the extra ALL in my DEPTNO Column which included all the values of 10,20,30,40 but when i move this column to table prompt after getting the option ALL and when i choose ALL it is showing the below error:

Referencing Prompted Values in Answers

Hi everyone! Just a quick question:
For example I have a source report as follows:
Item ID **** Description ***** Status
12345 **** Hello World **** Open
And I placed a Value drill-down for Item ID 12345 such that it goes to a more descriptive target report:
Item Information
Item ID **** Description **** Status **** Contact **** Etc.
12345 **** Hello World **** Open **** Oracle **** Etc.
This is driven by a filter on Item ID where Item ID is prompted.
Now I was hoping I could change the title banner or the text attributes by referencing the value of Item ID as it was prompted, so I could have something like this:
Item Information for Item ID 12345 <--- Now I'd like to be able to add that to the title
Item ID **** Description **** Status **** Contact **** Etc.
12345 **** Hello World **** Open **** Oracle **** Etc.
Anyone knows how I could reference the value from the target report's text/title views?

Unwanted ad? There is an ad at the bottom of the page that keeps prompting me to answer a question. this is very annoying and I want it out. How do I block it?

There is an ad at the bottom of my home page that is very annoying. I have tried everything to delete it but it won't go away. I can only assume that it is one of your sponsors. The ad keeps saying I am a winner and just answer a question. I am very upset that I am imposed on in this way every time I sign in. Please eliminate this from your home page as I am getting to the point of deleting firefos.

The easiest way is to use the Status-4-Evar add-on. With it you can choose to not display any of the status messages, or display them in the add-ons bar or location bar instead.

Digital Signature - enforce mandatory fields before signing

(Using version 8.05)
I have a form with digital signature that locks certain fields in a collection upon signing it, then they click button to send full PDF via email to another person. That person then signs, locking down their portion of the form, and email to another person for action.
The digital signing works fine but it allows mandatory fields to be locked down even though they are blank, the submit button enforces the mandatory fields but will not enforce the digital signing. The button can allow user to sign submission, but it does not show on the form which I need it to do.
How can I make this work in 8, my javascript knowledge is very limited.
I am considering upgrading to 9, I believe it allows more control for non-java types like myself with the action builder...

Hello
You could add some JavaScript to the "PreSign" event of the signature field that could check to see if the mandatory fields were filled. If not then you could abort the signing process.
I'm not 100% sure if the "PreSign" event existed in version 8.x of Designer however. It is definately part of version 9.x.

BW Variable as Prompt values in Xcelsius

Hi Experts,
We want to create Xcelsius report based on BW Query.
We can't use direct connection BW/Xcelsius because we haven't stack Java installed.
So we have used the other method :
- Universe on Query result
- QaawS on this universe
- Connection with Xcelsius.
Connection is ok but we're facing an issue with prompt.
We would like to have a mandatory prompt to determine a date intervall to filter the Xcelsius.
BW Query has a mandatory prompt but we can't have a pop-up on Xcelsius. We have to put values directly on worksheet to filter the report (But we loose query's flexibility).
The same issue happens when we put a prompt while creating the web service.
Have you any idea on how to display a prompt in Xcelsius ?

Webi OpenDocument URL NAII=Y Not Displaying Prompt Window

Hi everyone,
I have a webi document with 2 prompts. The first is a mandatory prompt that is generated by a universe object. The object is named "Subtract Number Of Days Prompt" and when it is used in a query filter it will generate a prompt and then return current date minus the integer input at the prompt. We use it to run statements such as Today - <DYNAMIC NUMBER AS INPUTTED BY PROMPT>
This is becasue my organisation dose not allow custom SQL.
Ok, so I have Minus number of days becasue I want to look at any record <= (CurrentDate - 3 days).
My second prompt is optional and is on Service State.
I have the following URL to open the report:

Works Fine, the prompt is answered with 3 days but for some reason the prompt box is not displayed asking for the state prompt.
I have this exact same URL format working for 7 other reports, only difference is that their state prompt is mandatory.
I can trick it into forcing the prompt box using the following: (Service State:=?)

But this opens up the prompt box with ? selected in the state.
This means if you hit run query it gives a database error becasue ? is not a valid response for state.
You have to either remove it to run for everywhere or select another state to run for a specific state.
This is not the behaviour I want.
I want the prompt box to open up so the users either hits run query leaving state empty or makes a selection and hits run to generate the report for the selected state.
I have not been able to find anything on this issue or anyone else who has experienced it via hours of google searching so I appreciate any assistance anyone can offer.

Testing with eFashion, a mandatory prompt and an optional prompt, I can make the optional prompt entry appear with:
&lsSPromptText=?
..but this doesn't populate the prompt entry with a question mark, it leaves it blank.
I have tried a few different permutations of checking / unchecking "Keep last value selected" and "Select only from list", but I can't seem to get the prompt entry to reflect the question mark from the URL - it always leaves a default entry box.
NAII=Y determines if the Mandatory prompt shows in the prompt box when specified in the URL, as expected.
