Can you try the following and update whether it works,
Get the VO's order by clause using the getOrderByClause api, then set the order by clause to null and then set your where clause and finally set back the order by clause.
Not sure whether such a workaround is necessary. Will check and update later.

    I don't think the current spec for EJBs support ORDER BY. But Weblogic has an extension that you can use (that is, if you're using it). Here's the info: http://e-docs.bea.com/wls/docs61/ejb/cmp.html#1076421

  • Entity bean (ejb 3.0) refactoring problem

    I didn't find a better method than regenerating an entity bean after modifying the table definition and renaming the class after deleting the old one.
    I'm not sure i can delete the old class representing the entity bean before regenerating it without any effects into the others entity beans.
    It work fine but still a little problem. The refactoring process didn't change the name of the entity bean into the select clauses into queynamed injection.

    I am facing a similar problem. Does JDeveloper 10g (10.1.3.3.0) provide an automatic process to update an Entity Bean definition when the underlying database table definition changes?
    I also noticed that for JDeveloper to create all the relationships (i.e. @OneToMany, @ManyToOne) between multiple Entity beans, I need to create all the Entity beans together in one pass using the wizard. If two entities depend on each other, and not created together, JDeveloper will not create the relationships between them. Is there a way around that?

    (otherwise you will first have to test if :NEW.<column name> is null, but I wouldn't do this for a key column.
    if you need the generated key back for further processing (inserting it into a child table for example), you can use the returning clause on the insert statement

  • Multiple instances of the same entity bean?

    I am designing a J2EE application that is made up of a number of separate components that each have a well-defined responsibility. Each component is made up of one or more J2EE components (web clients and EJBs). I want to design the application such that it is easy in the future to deploy each component (or a group of components) on different servers. In order to do this I need to make sure that the interfaces between each component are exposed as remote interfaces (but I will use local interfaces inside each component). However, there are a number of entity beans that need to be accessed by more than one component. I am wondering how best to expose these entity beans. I believe there are a number of options:
    1. Expose remote interfaces on each of the shared entity beans. The disadvantage of this approach is that it is inefficient and that I will not be able to take advantage of container managed relationships. (I am intending to use container managed persistence.)
    2. Create a facade object (stateful session bean) for each of the entity beans which exposes a remote interface and in turn accesses the shared entity beans locally. The disadvantage of this approach is that I have to create some extra EJBs and that I cannot directly make use of container managed relationships etc from the client component.
    3. I don't know if this is an option but I am wondering whether I can deploy a copy of each shared entity bean with each application component. The advantage of this approach is that the component would access the entity locally and could make use of container managed relationships. However, I don't know what the issues are with having more than one instance (per primary-key) of an entity in the same application. I don't know whether this would cause errors of whether they would get out of sync (because different instances with the same primary key would be updated by different clients). Initially each component would be deployed in the same server but later they would be deployed in different servers. In both cases with this option each component (JAR) would have copies of the shared entity bean classes.
    Any suggestions as to the best approach and whether the last option is feasible would be much appreciated.

    I think 2 beats 1. The main reason being to minimise the number of network calls. You're basically asking, are fascades a good idea? and the answer is yes.
    You can obviously do 3 in different app servers. However you'll need to configure your app servers so they can handle the fact that they're not the only ones updating the database. This is to handle concurrency as you mentioned. How you do this will depend on your app server and will affect performance, but shouldn't be a problem.
    I think you should definately decide up front what's going in different app servers, I dunno if 3 would work in the same app server.
    Why do you would want to use multiple app servers?
    Why not have everything in the same app?
    Is is just the 1 database?
    You can use clustering for scalability.

  • How to use same transaction when calling CMP entity beans and  DAO (JDBC)

    We are currently using Weblogic 8.1 SP2 with an Oracle 10g database (using XA thin and non-XA drivers).
    We have a session bean that invokes an entity bean and a DAO (data access object pattern) in order to add data in 2 separate tables (account and history). Rows are added to the first (account) table using a CMP Entity bean while inserts are done in the 2nd (history) table using a DAO. Here is some pseudo code:

    Step #2 - call addHistoryDAO (get datasource, connection)
    end
    The 2nd table (history) has a foreign key constraint to ensure that the corresponding key exists in the first (account) table. Unfortunately, DAO inserts on the 2nd (history) table fail with a foreign key constraint violation (INTEGRITY CONSTRAINT VIOLATION - PARENT KEY NOT FOUND!) since they cannot see the row added to the 1st (account) table in step #1 by the CMP entity bean.
    How does one ensure that all this is done in a single transaction ? It appears that the app server creates two seperate transactions (one for the session bean facade and the entity bean and a 2nd transaction (when we retrieve a connection using the same data source JNDI name) for the DAO.
    A post on server side suggested using a "<resource-ref>" in the session bean to tie the two potentially separate transactions together, but that does not work for us. However, I am not sure if we are doing that correctly. After we define the resource ref in the session facade bean, do we use the resource ref "name" attribute to lookup the datasource or do we still lookup the datasource by JNDI name ? Do we need to define the resource-ref tag in the entity bean also ?
    Does Weblogic allow using a single transaction for this type of a scenario ? How does one specify within Weblogic that the same transaction should be utilized by the entity bean and any subsequent DAOs?
    People have also suggested that we defer constraint checking until the transaction(s) are committed but that sounds like a work acount without addressing this issue. Would postponing the constraint checking in Oracle cause any additional overhead ?
    Any suggestions with specific examples or documentation on how to address this issue will be gratefully appreciated.

    Thanks for your suggestion. Unfortunately, this does not work since it appears that there are 2 separate transactions going on here. One, the original one initiated by the session bean and used by the entity bean and the other initiated by the DAO. Any other ideas appreciated.

    Forget it. All the code works. I didn't know that the Sun App Server required a Persistence Manager to work with CMP entity beans. Once I added the persistence manager, all was OK. Have a good day.

    Its difficult to know exactly the source of your problem. If your code works for session beans and Entity beans using BMP then I can only think of the following:
    In a CMP Bean, the ejbLoad and ejbStore methods do nothing. The container performs the load and store for you. I don't know whether leaving code in these methods will cause any problems though.
    You will need to make a few changes to your ejbCreate method though. Suppose your ejbCreate method looks like this:
    public PersonKey ejbCreate(String aFirstName, String aLastName) You still need to initialise the firstName and lastName fields in the bean.
    firstName = aFirstName;
    lastName = aLastName;Normally, the ejbCreate method returns the key value for the created object. Using CMP, you must return null. The container generates the new key value and returns it to the client.
    Not sure if that will help. Post on the link above if not.

    Finder method of a container entity bean is taking the primary key class object of another entity bean. How to map this in the xml descriptor file weblogic-cmp-rdbms.xml for this type of beans.
    I am trying to deploy the jasmine computer store of Mastering EJB by EdRoman.
    I couldn't write the deployment file weblogic-cmp-rdbms.xml for Order Entity bean which uses CustomerPK as an argument in its finder method.
    Please tell me how to write this. I am trying on weblogic 5.1

    hello,
    in container managed persistence, you specify on your xml file the name of your table. so the primary key you want to use have to be a foreign key in your table. otherwise i don't think that you can use a container managed persistence.

  • Entity beans storing client callbacks...how?

    Ok, here's my situation. Multiple clients might be modifying the same entity bean so I have implemented client callbacks. A client registers a callback with the bean, and the bean will call it back when someone modifies the beans data.
    Now my question is entity beans can be removed by the container for various reasons, so how can I have the bean save the callback so when the container reloads the bean it reloads the callbacks? How do you store a callback to a database?

    Shaft, let's look at it this way.
    How do you register a client as a callback? Anything "sent" to the EntityBean is serialized. That means when the EntityBean receives the information, it is not the same instance as your client class. Ergo, the "callback" method would operate only on the local instance the EntityBean has at the time, not the one on your client side.
    Now, as for the differences of "state." Yes, the EntityBean persists state as represented by the persistence store (e.g. a row in a table in database). However, in order to register an Object as you would for a callback, then the EntityBean must maintain a reference to that Object - which it can't because the only information that an EntityBean can maintain is that of the persistent store. Only static final Objects are allowed (ones that cannot change during the lifetime of an instance of the EntityBean). Even if you managed to circumvent this restriction, then you have to figure out how all of the EntityBeans would have exactly the same Object references for the callback objects.
    The only way to do what you want is to make it a "non-reference" type of relationship. Which means some sort of message-based system. If you use a JMS Topic, you can get a "broadcast" type of notification out to all your clients and, while there is a bit of a performance trade-off, it's a solution that will work.
    Finally, if there's "tons of data," you might want to go back and look at your Use Case(s) and determine if you really should be using EntityBeans anyway. EntityBeans are great stuff - when used in the right situations.

  • Question on Persistence (Entity Beans, Hibernate, JDBC)

    Hi everybody!
    Until now, I have read a lot about persistence in the J2EE-sector, but I am still confused about which technology to used in my case.
    I hope, that maybe you can give me some hints, by telling me which technology is good or bad regarding my requirements:
    I want to build a customer- and order-management system fullfilling the following requirements:
    1. The client is a Java application, the server is a JBOSS 4.0.1
    2. The databasa scheme exists already and I'm not allowed to change it.
    Some data, that logically belongs together and which shall be presented together to the client is distributed over 2 database tables.
    3. The user cannot just create new and view data, but will also edit existing data quite often.
    4. The user can assign products to an order. Often, there will be more than 1000 products assigned to an order, which will be presented to the user as a table (e.g. JTable). The user can then edit each cell of that 1000-row table, which of course will lead to an update in the db.
    5. The user can also assign customers to a specific role in an order-process. On the other hand, each customer can make many orders.
    So, we have a n:m relation here with the db-tables Customer, Order, OrderCustomer.
    6. A complex search functionality has to be implemented, where the db-query is created dynamically at runtime.
    7. The application is a multi-user application (about 10 users). It will be very rare, that users will work on the same data at the same time, but it might happen.
    8. The database type (SAP DB) will not be changed in the near future.
    With these 8 requirements in mind, I dealed a lot with EntityBeans, Hibernate and JDBC with SesseionBeans during the last 2 weeks.
    Until now, I came to the following conclusions.
    Hibernate is too slow. That'S bad, for data is edited very often and sometimes I want to edit just a single cell in 1000-row table.
    Hibernate's biggest advantage - that it makes your application independent of the database type - is not even required (see point 8).
    JDBC with SessioBeans: Very fast (I tried a simple query and it was about 10 times faster than Hibernate).
    The disadvantage is, that I have to take care about all the transaction, concurrency control etc. things.
    If I use JDBC, I want to do it that way: A SessionFacade accesses a DAO-object which executes the DB-query and returns the result to the SessionFacade which in the last step will pass the result to the client.
    Entity Beans: I am completely confused with Entity Beans.
    I read a lot about the CompositeEntity-Pattern for BMP. But on sun's J2EE Pattern page (http://java.sun.com/blueprints/corej2eepatterns/Patterns/CompositeEntity.html)
    they said, that it's just useful when using the EJB 1.1 specification, because from EJB 2.0. the container or whatever will take care about lazy loading and store optimization.
    So, from EJB 2.0. you should prefer using CMP-Beans with Container Managed Relationships (CMR), but as I heard, the dependent objects cannot be accessed and changed by the client when using CMPBeans with CMR.
    However, a simple DB/Entity-mapping will not work in my case, because as mentioned above, there are thousands of products from the db to be managed at the same time. So here, I thought, the Composite pattern with its lazy loading strategy would be useful.
    Furthermore, I have an n:m relationship in my database scheme, which is not trivial to map to entity beans. And don't forget that some related data is spread over 2 databse tables.
    To sum it up, it would be very nice if some of you could clarify this perisistence nightmare, especially some clarification about if and how to use EntityBeans when having n:m relationships, editing data a lot, managing lots of table rows at once and having related data distributed over 2 database tables.
    So, which technology would you prefer with the 8 requirements in mind? Hibernate, Entity Beans or JDBC with SessionBeans? Or would you prefer a mixed solution?

    </hibernate-mapping>So, seems to me like Hibernate is also getting the data from the Branch-Table related to each Customer. Maybe this is the reason, why Hibernate is slower.
    But as you can see in the mapping-File of the customer, I wanted Branches to be lazy loaded.
    Do you have any ideas, why Hibernate is so much slower? Any hints for optimizing that code?
    Do you have any further tricks to optimize Hibernate? Unfortunately I am not allowed to make changes at the database, so I cannot e.g. set indices for optimization.
    However, I�m a Hibernate-Newbie. In fact, I just made this test and was very disappointed about its result, so I didn�t keep on working with Hibernate.
    But maybe you can proof me, that Hibernate is a good choice. If so, do you have any good resources (links, books) that help working with Hibernate in connection with JBOSS, describe how to map n:m relationships, show how to work with large results and so forth?

  • ViewObjects Order by clause with DECODE

    I am using Jdeveloper 11g, version 11.1.1.2.0.
    The problem I'm having is this.
    If I use a DECODE statement in view objects ORDER BY clause, I get an error: "java.util.regex.PatternSyntaxException: Unmatched closing ')' near index 2".
    Let me give an example. I'll be using EmployeesView view object, which is using Employees entity from HR schema.
    This is a part of view objects XML.

    As you can see in this case, the Order by clause is very simple. This works like a charm.
    But, if put something like this "DECODE(Employees.MANAGER_ID, NULL, 1, 2)" in the Order by, I get an internal parsing error.
    I replicated this error on my home machine as well as on my work machine. I'm using the same version of Jdeveloper on both.
    Has anyone else stumbled upon this problem and solved it?
    Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated :)

    The second example works, but the first one doesn't, unfortunately :/
    Also, the example I gave is unfortunately just that, a proof-of-concept example that there is a problem with DECODE if it is written inside the Order by clause.
    My real DECODE use case is a bit different. Like this: "DECODE(attribute, 'N', 1, 2) ASC".
    Since posting my original question, I did some research-by-example work and I discovered that this is not just a problem of DECODE, but more like a problem of brackets and commas.
    No database function that uses more than one parameter can be used in Order by clause.
    The reason is, if a function with more than one parameter is used, commas inside brackets have to be used. Something along the lines of: "database_function(param1, param2, ...)".
    The parser seems to have a problem with this kind of expressions.
    Is there a work around?

    I am using an entity beans to store and load records in a table. When I save records to the table I store them in an order of Primary key ID, but when loading the entity bean this order is not being preserved. Is there any way I can specify what the order (ascending or descending) the entiry bean needs to load records?
