How do I create an Entity Bean with unknown primary keys

Hi,
Can a good folk help me.
I am mapping an entity bean to an oracle table for the purpose of logging . I do not need a primary key contraint on this table. How do I specify in my entity bean file descriptor not to use any field for primary key ...
I have done this so far...
in my ejb.xml file - I set....
<prim-key-class>java.lang.Object</prim-key-class>
and deleted ....
<primkey-field>...</primkey-field>
My table structure is .....
CREATE TABLE FAMS_REQUEST_LOG (
EDITEDBY VARCHAR2(20),
OLDTRANSDATE DATE,
REQUESTID VARCHAR2(30) NOT NULL,
OLDQTY NUMBER(20),
NEWQTY NUMBER(20),
NEWTRANSDATE DATE)
but I still get this error message on deploying...

you will have to create a sequence and a trigger
CREATE SEQUENCE <SEQUENCE NAME>
INCREMENT BY  1
START WITH  1
NOCACHE
/this sequence will guarantee that each requested number is unique
the trigger will select from this sequence and insert the obtained value in the new record
CREATE OR REPLACE TRIGGER <TRIGGER NAME>
BEFORE INSERT ON <TABLE NAME>
REFERENCING NEW AS NEW OLD AS OLD
FOR EACH ROW
    BEGIN
        select
            <SEQUENCE NAME>.nextval
        into
            :NEW.<COLUMN NAME>
        from
            dual;
    END;
[/CODE]
this will always take the value from the sequence, even if you already provided a value yourself
(otherwise you will first have to test if :NEW.<column name> is null, but I wouldn't do this for a key column.
if you need the generated key back for further processing (inserting it into a child table for example), you can use the returning clause on the insert statement
see the oracle documentation for more information about sequences, triggers and the returning clause

I am new to Oracle and need to know how to create a table that uses an automatic incrementation on a primay key for it's default. I need the uniqueness automatically managed by the DBMS.. This activity is know as setting the Column (primary key with identity) in Ms-SQL..
Your help would be appreciated greatly....
Thanks....

  • CMP entity bean with compound primary key

    I'm trying to use a compound primary key in a CMP entity bean. I've created the custom primary key class okay, and I have the prim-key-class set in ejb-jar.xml. My client app gets the home reference okay, but when it tries to find an entity, I get the exception "SQLException: Incorrect syntax near '/'."
    I think I'm having trouble deploying this in OC4J. Is there a sample orion-ejb-jar.xml deployment for a custom, compound primary key somewhere?
    Many thanks for any help.

    Never mind. I solved my problem. Thanks.

  • Entity Object with Nullabl Primary Key Parts

    I posted an article on how to handle nullable PKs.
    Here is the link:
    http://radio.weblogs.com/0123729/stories/2003/05/15/entityObjectOverTableWhosePrimaryKeyMayBeNull.html
    Please take a look if you're interested in the topic.

    Most likely the record in the database has an extra white space attached to it.
    For ex:- 'Harry ' instead of 'Harry';
    If you have an extra space there then findByPrimaryKey("Harry") will not be find that record.
    You can test it launching a SQL*PLUS
    and
    select col from table
    where col='Harry'
    this would return "no rows found" if it has an extra white space.

  • Multiple users accessing entity bean with same PK

    Hi,
    Some body please clarify the below issue.
    (EJB 1.1, WAS3.5)
    I have two app servers and two clones each clone is running in each app server.
    Stateful session bean access Entity beans to update/read record in the database.
    According to my requirement multiple users can access the same entity data (same primary key). Suppose user A created a Stateful session bean SB1 and the SB1 created Entity1 with PK1, this is happening at clone1.
    User B accessed the site and the request went to Clone2 and a new SB2 created, but the SB2 need to access the database with Same PK1.
    For the above situation, I guess container can not create a new Entity bean with PK1 because EB with PK1 is already there and it tries to allocate same EB1 with SB2, so if two requests are concurrent do the SB2 wait to get the handle of the EB1?
    Is there any way to create two Entity beans with same Primary Key at the same time but in different clone?
    Thanks,
    Sagar

    Hi,
    The concurrency level has to be set at the level of database and the database will take care of consistency & integrity of the data. So specity the concurrency level on the database connection in each appserver.

  • Error While Deploying A CMP Entity Bean With A Composite Primary Key

    Hello all,
    I have a problem deploying CMP Entity beans with composite primary keys. I have a CMP Entity Bean, which contains a composite primary key composed of two local stubs. If you know more about this please respond to my post on the EJB forum (subject: CMP Bean Local Stub as a Field of a Primary Key Class).
    In the mean time, can you please tell me what following error message means and how to resolve it? From what I understand it might be a problem with Sun ONE AS 7, but I would like to make sure it's not me doing something wrong.
    [05/Jan/2005:12:49:03] WARNING ( 1896):      Validation error in bean CustomerSubscription: The type of non-static field customer of the key class

If you already have fields mapped to these columns, verify that they are key fields.Is it enough that a primary key class be serializable or all fields have to implement Serializable or be a primitive?
    Please let me know if you need more information to answer my question.
    Thanks.
    Nikola

    Hi Nikola,
    There are several problems with your CMP bean.
    1. Fields of a Primary Key Class must be a subset of CMP fields, so yes, they must be either a primitive or a Serializable type.
    2. Sun Application Server does not support Primary Key fields of an arbitrary Serializable type (i.e. those that will be stored
    as BLOB in the database), but only primitives, Java wrappers, String, and Date/Time types.
    Do you try to use stubs instead of relationships or for some other reason?
    If it's the former - look at the CMR fields.
    If it's the latter, I suggest to store these fields as regular CMP fields and use some other value as the PK. If you prefer that
    the CMP container generates the PK values, use the Unknown
    PrimaryKey feature.

    Hi,
    Is ur compound primarykey class is something like this?
    public class PrimaryKey implements java.io.Serializable {
          public String id = "";
          public int no = 0;
          //a default constructor is required:
          public PrimaryKey() { }
          // optional constructor fo clients:
          public PrimaryKey(String id, int no) {
               this.id = smsId;
               this.no = no;
          public String toString() {
               return id + "" + no;
         public boolean equals(Object obj) {
              if (obj == null || !(obj instanceof PrimaryKey))
                      return false;
                   else if ((((PrimaryKey)obj).no == no) && (((PrimaryKey)obj).id.equals(id)))
                      return true;
                   else
                      return false;
          public int hashCode() {
                return id.hashCode() + no ;

  • Do I need to Create Primary Key Class for Entity beans with Local interface

    Do I need to Create Primary Key Class for Entity beans with Local interface?
    I have created my entity bean with the wizard in Sun One Studio and it does not create a primary key class for you.
    I thought that the primary key class was required. My key is made up of only one field.
    Anyone know the answer.
    Jim

    u dont need to create a primary key class for a entity bean.if ur table's primary key feild(int ,float) is a built in or primitive data type,then u dont need one.But if ur table has a primary key field which is non primitive (for example StudentID,ItemID etc)then u have to create a primary key class.
    hope this helps :-)

  • Deploying BMP Entity Bean with primary key calss

    Hi,
    I am using EJB 2.0 with and websphere studio 5.0 and database is sql server 2000.
    My BMP Entity bean has a primary key class.From my client I am invoking the Entity Bean by calling it's findbyprimarykey method.
    The home interface of my findbyprimarykey method returns a class of type Remote.But in the Entity Bean class,the return type is the primarykey class type.
    My problem is invoking this findbyprimarykey from the client to get the remote interface so that the other business methods of the entity bean can be called.
    The control goes into the ejbFindbyPrimaryKey but when it is returing from the Entity Bean class,it gives a remote exception (as the return type in Entity Bean class and Home interface are different for the findbyprimarykey method).
    I think that somewhere in the deployment decriptor in my websphere,i have to specify the primarykey class type,which i am missing out and hence getting the error.
    Please help me out with your advice and solution.
    Thanks

  • Creating entity beans with auto numbered primary key

    I have two entity bean with a CMR between them. I am successfully creating the first one but when I try and create the child entity bean I get a NullPointerException.
    Now I think this is because the gernerated code tries to get the primary key of the created entity bean and this is not set as it is set using a auto number in the database (An oracle sequence and trigger).
    Is there anyway i can get round this problem?
    Thanks in advance,
    Adrian

    This is the auto generated code:
         public dmd.sync.ejbs.entity.AppliancePackInfoLocal create_Local(dmd.sync.dataobjects.dto.AppliancePackInfoDTO appliancePackInfoDTO, dmd.sync.ejbs.entity.AmppLocal amppLocal) throws javax.ejb.CreateException, java.rmi.RemoteException {
              BeanO beanO = null;
              dmd.sync.ejbs.entity.AppliancePackInfoLocal result = null;
              boolean createFailed = false;
              boolean preCreateFlag = false;
              try {
                   beanO = super.createBeanO();
                   dmd.sync.ejbs.entity.AppliancePackInfoBean bean = (dmd.sync.ejbs.entity.AppliancePackInfoBean) beanO.getEnterpriseBean();
                   preCreateFlag = super.preEjbCreate(beanO);
                   bean.ejbCreate(appliancePackInfoDTO, amppLocal);
                   Object ejsKey = keyFromBean(bean);
                   result = (dmd.sync.ejbs.entity.AppliancePackInfoLocal) super.postCreate_Local(beanO, ejsKey, true);
                   bean.ejbPostCreate(appliancePackInfoDTO, amppLocal);
                   super.afterPostCreate(beanO, ejsKey);
    It must be falling over on the last line as it calls the ejbPostCreate fine.

  • Create CMP Entity Beans from Tables Wizard - Can't see any tables with DB2

    Hi,
    I'm trying to use the "Create CMP Entity Beans from Tables Wizard" to create an entity from a table in a DB2 database. The problem is, on page 2, I can't see any available tables. I have verified that the connection works (I can open the connection in the Navigator frame and I can see that table).
    Note that if I try this wizard on an Oracle database, I can see tables.
    WTF? Can someone please help?

    I second the motion. I too work in an environment with centralized data management (DBA's) that create and maintain all tables under a generic schema. This has prevented me from using the Create Entity Beans from Table feature of Jdev r3 preview.
    At least I can see that I'm not alone.
    Thanks
    When I select the "Create CMP Entity Beans from Tables Wizard," no tables or views are available to select. The JDev database connection is using an ID assigned to me.
    The tables that I am looking for were created by the DBA under his ID and are therefore in that schema. He did create Public Synonyms for them, but the tables still do not show up in the wizard.
    Is there a configuration step that I need to do to have those tables show up?
    Tables created by a DBA and then accessed by developers using a public synonym is a very common scenario and should be supported by JDeveloper (IMO).
    Thanks.
    I'm using JDev 9.0.2.8.2.

  • Is it possible to map the cmp fields of the entity bean with out dictionary

    Dear sirs,
    I have created the EJB project module and WEB Module. Now i have to map the CMP fields of the entity bean to the underlying table. Is it possible to map the cmp fields of the entity bean with out java dictionary? If yes how can we do that.
    I have got some error while mapping an EJB's CMP fields to the table through dictionary. I was actually intended to map 79 fields but it gives an error that more than 64 fields are not allowed while building the dictionary.
    1. Can you tell me what could be the possible reason?
    2. Is it possible to map the cmp fields of the entity bean with out java dictionary? If yes how can we do that.
    Kindly helo me,
    Sudheesh K S

    Hi,
    Sudheesh please check up if the below link helps,there are other ways of writing the persistent.xml for container managed entity bean.
    http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw04s/helpdata/en/9b/f695f0c84acf46a4e0b31f69d8a9b7/frameset.htm, probably in the studio you cannot browse through tables not in  the java dictionary,but manually editing it may still solve the problem.
    Also here is another link that specifies the databases supported by J2EE Engine.
    http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw04s/helpdata/en/66/a5283eeb47b40be10000000a114084/frameset.htm
    The below link shows how to specify the database vendor and datasource
    http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw04s/helpdata/en/e1/67fc3ee241ba28e10000000a114084/frameset.htm
    Hope you are able to solve the problem.
    Do let us know if you come up with the solution.

  • Entity bean with another class as primary key generator class

    Hi All,
    I have a CMP entity bean in which I generate the primary key using my own class know as unique id generator.
    I use it in ejbCreate method in the following manner
    public Long ejbCreate(HospitalData hospitalData) throws CreateException{
              Long myid = new Long(UniqueIdGenerator.getId());
              System.out.println("My id generated ====== "+myid);
              this.hospitalid = myid;
              System.out.println("My id generated ====== "+this.hospitalid);
              System.out.println("Came in ejbCreate method of HospitalEJB");
              this.hospitalname = hospitalData.getHospitalname();
              return null;
    Can you tell me how I map this primary key in my ejb-jar.xml and jbosscmp-jdbc.xml.
    Anyhelp would be appreciated.
    Thanks

    I am trying to develop an entity bean attached to a key which have a
    composite key using Primary Key Class. When I use the findByPrimaryKey
    method of the bean it throws an exception as follows,I notice that you are using the reference CMP plugin.
    at com.netscape.server.ejb.SQLPersistenceManager.find(Unknown Source)I'm also willing to bet that you may have created your own primary key class
    with a single field, rather than using the fields type as a primitive
    primary key class. If you do this, then SQLPersistenceManager will break.
    It is badly written, and has some stupid assumptions. The one I remember
    the most is that if you only have one primary key field, then
    SQLPersistenceManager assumes you have used a primitive type such as
    java.lang.String or java.lang.Integer, to represent it, rather than creating
    your own <Enity>Pk.java file.
    SQLPersistenceManager works for toy examples, but in general I would say it
    is broken and unusable. Either use BMP, or splash out the money for Coco
    Base from Thought Inc. Currently the only CMP plugin for iPlanet App server,
    other than the reference implementation, that I know of.

  • Can Entity Bean with Home Business Method replace Stateless Session Bean?

    Since Entity Bean can have business methods in the Home Interface, can we use Entity Bean with Home Business Methods to replace Stateless Session Bean?
    I am assuming we can get better performance by doing this since the overhead of creating Component Object can be avoided as compared to stateless session beans.

    Requires-new makes the container start a new transaction. Only use that flag
              at the point that you are certain that a NEW transaction should BEGIN. I
              suggest you use Required as your default for all methods in the application,
              and only change that to anything else when you are certain that you should.

  • Caching CMP Entity Beans with 9.0.2

    Hi,
    my CMP Entity Bean is accessed from a JSP-Page through a Stateless Session Bean. The Session-Bean executes findAll() on the Entity-Bean and the JSP-Page iterates over the Collection and displays the Fields through their getter-Methods. It turns out that every getXXX Methods results in a complete load of the Bean from the Database, so for 3 database-records with 4 attributes i get 12 SELECT - statements and 12 Activate/Load/Passivate cycles of the Entity Bean!!!!
    I tried to setup the attributes in orion-ejb-jar.xml correctly, but that didn't show a difference:
    -) exclusive-write-access="true" does only work in "read-only" mode (see oc4j_ejb_guide_r2.pdf)
    -) setting timeouts didnt work
    My Entity Bean settings are:
    exclusive-write-access="true"
    instance-cache-timeout="60"
    max-instances="100"
    max-tx-retries="0"
    pool-cache-timeout="100"
    The EJB-Callbacks are:
    first the Session-Bean is created, and findAll() is executed - then all Entity-Beans are passivated again:
    TestManBean Constructor called 1
    TestManBean.setSessionContext() 1
    TestManBean.ejbCreate() 1
    PersonBean Constructor called 1
    PersonBean.setEntityContext() 1
    PersonBean.ejbActivate() 1
    PersonBean.ejbLoad() 1
    PersonBean Constructor called 2
    PersonBean.setEntityContext() 2
    PersonBean.ejbActivate() 2
    PersonBean.ejbLoad() 2
    PersonBean Constructor called 3
    PersonBean.setEntityContext() 3
    PersonBean.ejbActivate() 3
    PersonBean.ejbLoad() 3
    PersonBean.ejbPassivate() 1
    PersonBean.ejbPassivate() 2
    PersonBean.ejbPassivate() 3
    now for every getXXX-Methods the following occurs:
    PersonBean.ejbActivate() 3
    PersonBean.ejbLoad() 3
    PersonBean.ejbPassivate() 3
    I user OC4J 9.0.2 Production with Oracle 8.1.6.
    How can I turn on Entity-Bean Caching?
    Thanks,
    Gilbert
