ERP databases on clouds

Hi All,
I am currently in process of writing my dissertation on "Strategy for migrating ERP databases on clouds".
I did some research on traditional ERP vendors like SAP and cloud erp vendors Compiere, As a simple conclusion I can see that majority of ERP vendors use relational DBMS for storing ERP data. I have the following questions on which I would like to hear your views on. Following are the questions:
1.     What could be the possible reasons that companies implementing ERP/SAP mostly store their database in internal data centre and not on clouds?
2.     Will there be any performance issues (like latency, access speed) if the ERP databases are stored on clouds?
3.     How much secured would the ERP data be on cloud compared to internal data centre?
4.     Could the companies rely on the clouds as they would not be having the complete ownership of the data then?
5.     Could hosting ERP database on cloud help companies save enough money and would it be worth?
6.     Big ERP vendors like SAP are well established in providing on-premise ERP solutions. Would it be a big risk for these vendors (in terms of data security, database compatibility, less revenue) to move their client databases on clouds rather than using the traditional internal data centre storage?
7.     Are non relational databases a better solution for ERP data storage on the cloud compared to traditionally used relational DBMS?
If you can give your views on any of these queries, it would be highly appreciated
Your views will help me in my dissertation.
Many Thanks in Advance,
Dinesh

Hi,
Some thoughts for your queries:
1.     What could be the possible reasons that companies implementing ERP/SAP mostly
store their database in internal data centre and not on clouds?
- Cloud computing as a technology is relatively new (comparing to the others in its class) & is
developing. So a firm implementing ERP/SAP would prefer a stable or a technology which is in-place
for a while, so the devils & demons of it are known. Also there will be a perennial question of security
& in some industries a legal requirement to be met etc. etc.
2.     Will there be any performance issues (like latency, access speed) if the ERP databases
are stored on clouds?
- It depends on how the network is setup & to arrive at a definitive answer, a network specialist needs
to carry out a series of tests to provide the results. But as a heuristic, you can take that in-house server
is better than a cloud server.
3.     How much secured would the ERP data be on cloud compared to internal data centre?
- It depends on who is providing the cloud service & what security procedures they have in place.
A detailed external audit is required in the initial stage & a regular follow-up is required to ensure they
are following up. But this is easier said than done, if you're a small fish for the giant cloud service providers.
So an in-house center would be easier to manage, monitor & audit.
4.     Could the companies rely on the clouds as they would not be having the complete
ownership of the data then?
- The previous qns would play a big role for this. The doubt would persist, the moment the data is
not stored in an in-house server, so a firm running its entire operations & storing key business
information might not be willing to rely on clouds.
5.     Could hosting ERP database on cloud help companies save enough money and would it be worth?
- As seen from previous qns, the cost for cloud does not just include the cost charged for the hosting,
but will require additional costs in terms of audit, maintenance, etc. etc. Furthermore a firm which invests
in SAP, can be taken as a firm which is not low on resources, but assigns highest priority to security,
reliability etc. But a true analysis can be made only by an expert who has an in-depth know-how of both
technologies, as the costs may appear favoring a particular technology in near term, but ERP investments
are not short term.
6.     Big ERP vendors like SAP are well established in providing on-premise ERP solutions.
Would it be a big risk for these vendors (in terms of data security, database compatibility, less
revenue) to move their client databases on clouds rather than using the traditional internal data centre
storage?
- For sure there will be risks, as seen from previous qns, it would take a lot of research, effort on part
of any ERP service provider to ensure the data is secure. Maybe for the small & medium segment,
it would be relatively easier to think of moving towards Clouds, but not so much for the large enterprises.
7.     Are non relational databases a better solution for ERP data storage on the cloud compared
to traditionally used relational DBMS?
- Cant think of something which could decisively say one is better than the other & would have
to go with... 'Depends'
Good luck with your dissertation.

Vivek

  • License of Database on Cloud

    Dears,
We have planning to deploy our ERP Application on Cloud (With Cloud Provider), and we use Oracle for database.
So we want to ask about Licenses Required of database if we want to move our Application to Cloud. Becouse that's issue for our cloud provider.
We need this information as soon as possible.
    Thanks & regards,
    Iwan K

    Hi Josh -
Kind of right. You do not need any other licenses for Oracle products to use the Database Cloud. You can develop your schemas directly in the Database Cloud using tools that are a part of the Application Express environment included with the Database Cloud.
You can use another Oracle Database to develop schemas and use SQL Developer to move these to your Database Cloud Service. If this were, for instance, Oracle XE, both that and SQL Developer are no cost downloads.
So your choice, based on your working processes.
    Thanks for your interest.

Please let us know how to Perform Upgrade ERP database 11g and ATG7 with SSO integation .
    Regards .

We have completed to upgrade ERP database from 9.2.0.6 to 11.2.0.1 and also apply ATG 7 on Test instance.
And user finish testing , there is no issue after upgrade and application can work as normal.
On Test instance we didn't implement Single Sign On
But on Production we have Single Sign ON.
Now we plan to upgrade on Production instance. But we afraid that we will found any issue on Production relate to SSO. Becase we don't have a chance to test it.
    My question is:
Are there any spacial step we need to do if we have implemented SSO After upgrade DB 11g and ATG 7?

    Hi
Thanks. Actually, last week all of a sudden 1GB growth of database happen in one day. In our Oracle ERP instance, every user is attaching many documents to purchase orders. So our management is interested to know which table or file system directory is having this much of growth? We want to restrict the users for not uploading every document with purchase order as it will fill-up our server hard disk soon.

    Hi,
    no, you got it wrong:
Oracle uses network services which are a logical representation of the database to resolve network requests.
in your ntsnames.ora file you have the following:
network_alias = my_alias -- here you can write anything you just need to resolve it correctly
    (DESCRIPTION=
    (ADDRESS=
    (PROTOCOL=TCP)
    (host=hostname or IP)
    (port=listener adapter port)
) -- this a complete socket information of the listener adapter!!
    (CONNECT_DATA=
(SERVICE=your_service) -- this is what you tell the listener about the service you want to connect to. It is defined in the instance with the paramter service_names
In general it is network aliasses which are resolved with connect descriptor in the tnsnames.ora.
A connect decriptor consists of the address part + the connect_data part.
The address part is used to reach the listener.
The connect_data part is the information you hand over to the listener.
So the listener must know the service name.
The listener can either know this from the instance itself. When an Oracle instance is started it tries to registrer itself with a listener which listens on port 1521 for the protocol TCP.
The instance tell this listener two paramater values: INSTANCE_NAME and SERVICE_NAMES. Then the listener knows the instance and which services are defined. It is just a reprentation of the database to the listener.
If the listerner knows the service requested with a connect, it can establish a connection to a service handler. This could be a dedicated server process or a dispatcher.
Another mehtod to let the listener know the service requested is so called static regustration of the instance. This is made with an SID LIST in the listener.ora file.
Then the listener knows SID for the instance plus ORACLE_HOME and can find the executable to start a server process for a connect request.
    Hope it helps a little-.
    =;-)
If you have further questions pls do not hesitate to ask. O.K.?

  • How do I update/change the connect descriptor for a target RAC database in Cloud Control

I have Cloud Control 12c Release 3 set up and monitoring many hosts and targets. However when monitoring my RAC (2 nodes), it cannot connect to the database instances (although it shows them as up). I get the message "IO Error: The Network Adapter could not establish the connection". I can see that the connect descriptior is using the vip, rather than the hostname.

CODERINT 600(SP1 &2) are installed and BC set COD_BYD_ERP_INT is activated in the system.
Could anyone let us know what are we missing here, so that we can get the message types.
Also we tried using Message type MATMAS for sending a message from ERP to Cloud for Customer. In PI message monitoring, the status shows as 'Processed successfully', however we do not find the message in Business Communication Monitoring in the Cloud system. neither do we see the Business Object created for that Material master.

Even after issuing the command > shutdown immediate, database did not shutdown for 2 hours as some 'Create accounting' concurrent program was running for past 44 hours. But my concern is, i cannot add >shut abort command in my script. What is the other alternative or what parameter to be tuned? Please guide me.

  • Connect ODI12c to Oracle Database in Cloud

    Hi,
Could anyone throw some light on how to connect ODI12c to Oracle and Non-Oracle Database hosted on Private or Public Cloud from on premise ODI12c instance?
I have read an article by David Alan, explains connecting through SSL Tunnel. Is it the only way? Is there any out-of-the-box method to connect to Cloud?
I have also read the white paper by Oracle, which says ODI can be used for data integration with cloud. But, How?
    Thanks in advance.
    Thanks & Regards,
    MT

Right now there's no other way to connect in the cloud DB other than sql developer, but you don't need a tunnel to connect with it.
You need just to configure your connection with you sftp info and it will work.
Take a look in this article that's very useful.
