Error 500: javax.servlet.http.HttpSession: method getServletContext()Ljavax

I think that I have an older version of servlet class files... is there any way to solve the following issue?
in old version, getServletContext() method isn't included in HttpSession object. is there any way to get around this problem? cuz our client has an old version... i am not sure if it's possible...

Hi, you are missing the servlet.jar file from your classpath.
In JDeveloper, you can add this by opening up your project -> libraries and adding the servlet runtime library.

Hi,
The file servlet-api.jar / servlet.jar is not available in your classpath.
To compile an Servlet you need the jar file to be in classpath.
The jar file can be found in your webserver / application server lib folder.

"javac blahblah.java" returned with error: package javax.servlet.http does,

and a bunch of "cannot resolve symbol".
I do have servlet-api.jar in the classpath.
This is ApacheTomcat 5.5.25, JVM version 1.5.0_04-b05,

What am I missing?

The environment variabele $classpath is only used by the java runtime, not by the java compiler.Are you certain of that Balusc?
Granted I don't use the command line to compile things much, but I'm pretty sure it uses the CLASSPATH environment variable if you don't specify a -cp or -classpath.
Can you please show the
- error message/stacktrace
- value of CLASSPATH environment variable
- command line you are using to compile the class
- an excerpt from the class itself.

I just want to know, whether HTTPSession i.e., HttpSession got from HttpServletRequest is serialized?

In a servlet container you obtain an object of the type implementing HttpSession. The very type can implement Serializable or not, depending on the implementation, the API does not mandate this.
As if I had seen somewhere a hint that you should only put Serializable stuff into the session, that is, that very container appears to use serialization to distribute the session information in a cluster.

Why my servlet receives NoClassDefFoundError : javax/servlet/http/HttpSession

I developed an application which has one servlet.
The war context-root that has the servlet is 'workflowclient'.
When invoking the servlet with URL "http://localhost/workflowclient/WfAgentManagerSRMIServlet, an exception with NoClassDefFoundException is raised.
Why ?

The supported JBoss version for 10.1.2 is JBoss EAP 5.1.2 but I don't think that your issue is caused because of this. Your issue is more of an environmental thing as you are probably getting two different versions getting loaded of class javax.servlet.http.HttpServletRequest and so correspondingly two different Class objects as the error shows. One reason for this could be if you include any server-specific libraries (in present case the Servlet API JAR which contains the class javax.servlet.http.HttpServletRequest) of a different version in the /WEB-INF/lib of your web application. Try removing it from there if so and see if that helps.

I am trying to compile a file, but got the error message "package javax.servlet.http does not exist",

It seems to me that this particular package is missing. how and where exactlly do I get this particular package and make it to work??

As you are using the package I assume that you're targetting a servlet engine (such as Tomcat) or a J2EE server. The package is in servlet.jar which is part of the binary release of the container that you are using.

Service method in javax.servlet.http.HttpServlet

I have a doubt in the service method of javax.servlet.http.HttpServlet
There are two service methods in the javax.servlet.http.HttpServlet.
one is with protected and other is with public access specifier.
In the javadoc it is said that public service method dispatches client requests to the protected service method.
Why this type of design is required.
Instead of having a two service methods, Is it not possible to have a single service method and attain the functionality intended.
Are there any advantages by having two service methods.
I think there may be some idea/functionality behind these for having two service methods , which I am not able to understand.
Would be greatful , if someone can throw light on this .

This is just a theory, but here goes:
The public service() method takes arguments of ServletRequest and ServletResponse, presumably because that's the signature that the non-HTTP specific servlet engine requires.
The protected service() method of HttpServlet takes arguments of HttpServletRequest and HttpServletResponse and includes HTTP specific functions.
My guess is that the public service() method either casts the arguments to the Http objects or does work to create the Http objects before calling the protected method.

Tomcat 5 can�t find javax.servlet.http.HttpServlet

it seems like C:\softProyecto\Tomcat5\conf\Catalina\localhost\admin.xml (C:\softproyecto\tomcat5 = tomcat�s home directory) needs javax.servlet.http.HttpServlet. And that comes from a Tomcat .jar file, i think.
After more and more messages..... here it comes my application (MapasRuido)...which needs javax.servlet.http.HttpServlet and compiled ok at compiling time!

What I mean by this, of course, is that each of these requires you to set the CLASSPATH in the way they expect. None of them even looks for a system environment variable named CLASSPATH. You can waste a lot of time thinking that your CLASSPATH is "all set", but it's not.
Tomcat assumes the following for your Web app's CLASSPATH:
(0) The JDK rt.jar, of course,
(1) All the JARs in TOMCAT_HOME/common/lib,
(2) All the JARs in your WEB-INF/lib,
(3) All the .class files in your WEB-INF/classes
That's it. (Maybe one or two others, but those are the important ones.)
Eclipse and NetBeans have their own way to set CLASSPATH for each project. You'll have to learn how for those IDEs.

1. My classpath doesnt seem to work.:

2. As a result, i get many errors in my simple code, but there are still a few that are not related to javac not recognizing the servlet api.

but the servlet package is still not recognized
I have 2 classes, one to read the database connection details from a file and another class, my servlet.

The library is in tomcat/common/lib, not in tomcat/lib.

Javax.servlet.http.* package does not exist ?

i am using j2sdk which does not include servlets, so in the forums i found that including servlet.jar file in jdk1.6.0\jre\lib\ext javax.servlet.* was included but javax.servlet.http did not ..... now this is strange either both do not work or both work. here is the code

error is package javax.servlet.Http.*; does not exist.

javax.servlet is one of the J2EE (Java Enterprise Edition) packages that is not included in the J2SE (Java Standard Edition) , so that one used for developing server side application.

I am running ANT and confronted this message:

    [javac] C:\eclipseProjects\tomcat_test\WEB-INF\src\WebTest.java:4: package javax.servlet does not exist
    [javac] import javax.servlet.ServletException;
    [javac] ^I googled around and found this solution:
servlet-api.jar is the jarfile that contains javax.servlet.ServletException and javax.servlet.http.* which are imported by WebTest.java and must therefore be found in the classpath. If javac doesn't find this jar (or the javax.servlet packages), it will say (or shout, depending on my and javac's mood): [the error message]
well...I set in the classpath the location of the servlet-api.jar
(found at: C:\Tomcat\common\lib)
I set it with the environment variable (windows xp)

Here is the solution.. yes u have to edit the environment variables:..
I am using J2EE sdk 1.4 and running on xp
This is the classpath setting:
C:\Sun\AppServer\lib\j2ee.jar;
This is the PATH setting
C:\Sun\AppServer\bin;

I am a newbie to JAVA.
I installed JDK1.6.0_04, then NetBeans IDE 6.0
I tried compiling an example servlet, but got this error message:
package javax.servlet does not exist, package javax.servlet.http does not exist
I tried locating these packages, but in vain. I also tried setting the CLASSPATH to many values, still it did not work.
Can anyone, please, help me with this.
Should I be able to see/locate these packages, do I have to download them?

See above. What were you planning to set CLASSPATH to?First I set to:
C:\Program Files\Apache Software Foundation\Apache Tomcat 6.0.14\lib (because I found jar named servlet-api.jar in this folder)
Later I added this:
C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.6.0_04\lib (out of trial-and-fail)
Finally I added some paths that lead to a library such as
C:\Program Files\glassfish-v2\lib
C:\Program Files\glassfish-v2\lib\ant\lib
