'Error establishing socket' due to too many TCP sockets

Hallo
I have an app running on Win 2000, SP 3, JRE 1.2, connecting with a MSSQL 2000 DB using MS JDBC drivers and constantly writing updates to this DB. It starts off fine and continues for quite some time before encountering the following exception:
java.sql.SQLException: [Microsoft][SQLServer JDBC Driver]Error establishing socket.
Checking the output from netstat while the application is running revealed a huge number of sockets which are aparently used by the application since closing the application causes all these connections to be closed. I assumed that this may be the cause of the exception.
The application only connects with the database once and statements and resultsets are closed after use.
The same application running at other sites with more-or-less the same environment does not cause as many open sockets.
Can anybody tell why so manu sockets are created and not closed ? Any suggestions will be much appreciated.
Regards
Dawie

As an update, I was using connection pooling, and removed it. Now I create a connection per request and explicitly close the connection when done. This accomplished two things, reduced the number of stale connections, and also "throttled" down the process somewhat (not by much as in testing I found the average response times slowed by only a couple milliseconds).
I did do a netstat on the application server when I started receiving all the errors and found, like dawiemoller did, there was a VERY large number of stale connections to the SQL 2000 server. I wasn't able to telnet into the SQL server and port, as expected. Restarting the Java app on the application server cleared up all the stale connections.
After I removed the connection pooling, I've yet to receive the "error establishing socket" error, however after checking netstat again, I did find that there are still a lot of stale connections, just not nearly as many.
If this is a Microsoft bug, why would the stale connections go away after restarting the Java Application? Microsoft IIS is also running on the same server with database access to the SQL 2000 server and it isn't having any trouble. Could it be just a combination of this "bug" and using Microsoft's JDBC driver (SP1) to SQL 2000? Would switching to another vendors JDBC driver avoid this problem?

eed these probes, what can i do then? You need to tune up the number of probes; see /kernel/drv/fasttrap.conf, and either reboot or run "update_drv fasttrap" after making the changes. The default is 250,000 -- I recommend changing it to 1,000,000. (Indeed, we're considering changing the default to 1,000,000 anyway because so many are running into this limit.)

    Hi,
Cause might The server got an exception while trying to accept client connections. It will try to backoff to aid recovery.
The OS limit for the number of open file descriptor (FD limit) needs to be increased. Tune OS parameters that might help the server to accept more client connections (e.g. TCP accept back log).

I have wanted to update from 3.6.22, to 5.0.1, but can't do to the following reasons: I can't due to, too many things won't work with the version & will be disabled. They are: Microsoft. NET Framework Assistant 1.2.1, Iconix 3.90.1, HP Detect 1.0.5.1, Yahoo! Toolbar 2.3.5.201101200332202 (I don't care about Yahoo! Toolbar, because I don't use it!). As soon as these issues are fixed, I will be able to update, to the latest versions. These issues should be fixed & ready to work, before a new version is available. Thank you!

My daughter's ipod touch is locked due to too many incorrect password attempts (thanks to her little brother).  It is displaying the red bar that states ipod is disabled connect to itunes.  Problem is we don't have the computer that the ipod was originally synced with and she doesn't want to reset the ipod.  In this instance we know the password.. so is there anyway to get the ipod to ask us one more time to enter the password?  I'm not sure how many incorrect attempts were made, but it doesn't state anything about try again in so many minutes.. help, please!

Have purchased jack reacher for 15.99 unable to download due to too many http addresses. I hav only got the apple address open only would I be able to get a download and how do I go about getting a refund thankyou.

You would really have to ask the app developer if there is a way to export the data.
As for adding a printer, you would need to purchase an AirPrint compatible printer and connect it to your wireless network.

    Solved!

There is no generic password, that would create a HUGE security hole. If you have held the reset pinhole down for 15 seconds or so with the unit powered on, then released it, the password should be set to what is on the router label. admin will be the user and when you type the password  you should see what appears to be other characters when you type..
One person with this issue had to type the password into notepad and copy paste it to get in.
You can change the  default setting of 5 bad logins but I DO NOT  recommend this  credit to armond_in_nj
"You can reset the number of allowed unsuccessful logins. Log on to the device, then click on "Advanced." In the far left column, choose "Users." In "Login Configuration" set the desired number of unsuccessful logins.
Also be sure to either activate, accept, or save all desired changes prior to changing screens or logging off."
Personally I have also added and extra user in case I have an issue with admin

If you have forgotten your Restrictions code, then follow the instructions
below but DO NOT restore any previous backup. If you do then you will
simply be restoring the old Restrictions code you have forgotten. This
same warning applies if you need to restore a clean system.
A Complete Guide to Restore or Recover Your iDevice (if You Forget Your Passcode)
If you need to restore your device or ff you cannot remember the passcode, then you will need to restore your device using the computer with which you last synced it. This allows you to reset your passcode and re-sync the data from the device (or restore from a backup). If you restore on a different computer that was never synced with the device, you will be able to unlock the device for use and remove the passcode, but your data will not be present. Refer to Updating and restoring iPhone, iPad and iPod touch software.
Try restoring the iOS device if backing up and erasing all content and settings doesn't resolve the issue. Using iTunes to restore iOS devices is part of standard isolation troubleshooting. Restoring your device will delete all data and content, including songs, videos, contacts, photos, and calendar information, and will restore all settings to their factory condition.
Before restoring your iOS device, Apple recommends that you either sync with iTunes to transfer any purchases you have made, or back up new data (data acquired after your last sync). If you have movie rentals on the device, see iTunes Store movie rental usage rights in the United States before restoring.
Follow these steps to restore your device:
         1. Verify that you are using the latest version of iTunes before attempting to update.
         2. Connect your device to your computer.
         3. Select your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch when it appears in iTunes under Devices.
         4. Select the Summary tab.
         5. Select the Restore option.
         6. When prompted to back up your settings before restoring, select the Back Up
option (see in the image below). If you have just backed up the device, it is not
             necessary to create another.
         7. Select the Restore option when iTunes prompts you (as long as you've backed up,
you should not have to worry about restoring your iOS device).
         8. When the restore process has completed, the device restarts and displays the Apple
             logo while starting up:
After a restore, the iOS device displays the "Connect to iTunes" screen. For updating
to iOS 5 or later, follow the steps in the iOS Setup Assistant. For earlier versions of
iOS, keep your device connected until the "Connect to iTunes" screen goes away or
              you see "iPhone is activated."
         9. The final step is to restore your device from a previous backup.
If you can not restore your device then you will need to go to recovery mode.
Placing your device into recovery mode:
Follow these steps to place your iOS device into recovery mode. If your iOS device is already in recovery mode, you can proceed immediately to step 6.
         1. Disconnect the USB cable from the iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, but leave the other end
of the cable connected to your computer's USB port.
         2. Turn off the device: Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds until the
red slider appears, then slide the slider. Wait for the device to turn off.
If you cannot turn off the device using the slider, press and hold the Sleep/Wake
and Home buttons at the same time. When the device turns off, release the Sleep/Wake
              and Home buttons.
         3. While pressing and holding the Home button, reconnect the USB cable to the device.
The device should turn on. Note: If you see the screen pictured below, let the device
charge for at least ten minutes to ensure that the battery has some charge, and then
             start with step 2 again.
         4. Continue holding the Home button until you see the "Connect to iTunes" screen.
When this screen appears you can release the Home button.
         5. If necessary, open iTunes. You should see the following "recovery mode" alert:
         6. Use iTunes to restore the device.
If you don't see the "Connect to iTunes" screen, try these steps again. If you see the "Connect to iTunes" screen but the device does not appear in iTunes, see this article and its related links.
    Additional Information:
Note: When using recovery mode, you can only restore the device. All user content on the device will be erased, but if you had previously synced with iTunes on this computer, you can restore from a previous backup. See this article for more information.
