Error in the java tutorial

the applet can not run.

I can't get it to run either, on IE nor on Mozilla Firebird (and yes, both are Java 2-capable and I know how to set both up and they both do run Java applets).

I'm confused :=Q
I am following the Java tutorial and am trying to do the ClickMe applet. The html file was saved as text in notepad. I downloaded the ClickMe and Spot source files. They compiled without errors along with the html file. I double checked my DIR and saw that I had the class files. When I went to run the applet, the little window appeared without any spot and said something about Clickme class in the heading border and then in the box it said applet not initialized. So, I went through the forum and looked for anything similar and I saw that someone said to compile like:C:\jdk1.3.1_01 javac ClickMe.java Spot.java
So, I tried that, and I still have class files, but now I don't have the applet box showing anymore and I don't get any errors. I was successful when I did the Hello World applet, so I know it's not a class path problem or text prob. I was using typing appletviewer ClickMe.html
I'm getting so hungup on trying to get the applets to work I am losing track of how and why they are supposed to work. It is so discouraging especially when there doesn't seem to be anyone in particular to ask.
Does anyone have anything encouraging to offer?
I am using JDK 1.3 on WinXP (Java has been totally enabled without using the plug in) It has worked successfully.

Makes about 3 months I'm doing so, and from my experience, it is much more fun to create Programs than Applets.. I always work with Swing and it is a pain to use it inside Applets (but Swing is really great to create GUIs..) Learning how to build Jar and how to use Swing helps you building up Jar files that run like EXEs ;) That gives good results!

Never mind. I kept trying, and finally when I opened "About This Mac" and clicked the software update from there (as opposed to the "Software Update" just below), the Java update finally worked.

Question about scope in the enum example in the Java Tutorial

On page http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/java/javaOO/enum.html of the Java tutorial the enumeration MONDAY is not prefixed with the enum name when it is used in the function tellItLikeItIs.

swtich is a special case.
The label for each 'case' of a switch
will infer based on the type of switch value
switch(d) {
case MONDAY:
case TUESDAY:
will automatically refer to the MONDAY and TUESDAY

When using Java Wizard with Firefox 3.6.23 on a Mac OS X 10.6.8 it keep getting an error message: "The Java Wizard cannot run. Please configure your browser to allow Java applets to access the filesystem." Have NO idea how to fix this problem.

When trying to upload files I received the following error: "The Java Wizard cannot run. Please configure your browser to allow Java applets to access the filesystem."

If the problem is with a site that is hosted using MOVEit DMZ by Ipswitch, please notify the site owner of the issue and ask them to apply the patch that is available on the support site to resolve the issue.
This is a better resolution than downgrading your version of Java that was updated due to security issues.

10.1.3 JBO - show JSP line # on error, not the java one?

Another issue I'm bumping into on the JBO migration to 10.1.3(.1) are OC4J's stack traces for the JSPs are showing the line number of the error from the compiled java class, not the JSP file. Previous version used to do this. How can I get this back?

Import Package problems and error in the Java file created in runtime

got the following error message when i try to load the JSP file given below (FlightSearch.jsp). Given also below the JAVA files (flightsearch$jsp.java) created by the compiler.

Facing a error during the ADFBC tutorial

Hi,
I am facing a error when i I try to run the SRList page of the demo application. The error occur when I try to run the SRList page in chapter 5 on page 11. I am getting a java internal error, statin many lines on the internet explorer page. I cant recollect the error. I will soon provide the error.

Getting the Adapter Class Not Found Error in the Java Manipulator

Hi,
I wrote a custom java manipulator for the baseline update and created a jar file for the class. This works fine in the Windows machine. All I have to do is while specifying the CLASSPATH, I entered the ./ib/newManipulator.jar; ./lib/additional_dependency.jar. When I tried to deploy the same code in the Unix environment, it fails saying the Adapter Class not found. The only difference from windows and Unix environment is that in the windows machine, in order to run the base line update, I go to the directory my_project->control->baseline_update.bat but in case of Unix environment I have a separate location where I have a shell script called run-baseline-update.sh located at /apps/bin which invokes the baseline.sh in the directory my_project/control/baseline.sh. I even tried to put the full path of the jar files e.g. /my_project/lib/newManipulator.jar; /my_project/lib/additional_dependency.jar in the class path but still the same issue. Any suggestions?

Unix classpath needs ":" as the path separator, not ";". Changing that will make this work.
For reference, later versions of the deployment template make this configurable, so you'd see (in environment.properties):
# PATH_SEP_VARNAME: for platform-independence
PATH_SEP_VARNAME=;
# Forge needs record store libraries as well as Spring to load record store adapter configuration files
FORGE_CLASSPATH=./config/lib/java/spring-delegate-adapter-1.0.1.jar${PATH_SEP_VARNAME}./config/lib/java/spring.jar${PATH_SEP_VARNAME}./config/lib/java/eacToolkit.jar${PATH_SEP_VARNAME}./config/script${PATH_SEP_VARNAME}.
You can then add the following to your <forge /> definition in AppConfig.xml:
<arg>--javaClasspath</arg>
<arg>${FORGE_CLASSPATH}</arg>

Couldn't understand "Collections" with the Java Tutorial of sun..

I've been reading the tutorials since a long time to learn without having to ask too many questions ;)
Although, I couldn't understand the way "collections" are useful, and how they can be used!
If anyone can throw in an example, and explain it! It'll be very helpful to me!

Take two steps back.
Buy a book on basic Java Programming. You need to understand the concepts behind programming before you should start reading the API.
But kudos for at least trying to read the API.
Now look at the column on the left, and follow the link called [url http://developer.java.sun.com/developer/onlineTraining/] Tutorials
and then the link titled [url http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/index.html]The Java Tutorial (Java Series).
And finally read through the sections starting with [url http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/getStarted/cupojava/index.html]Your First Cup of Java.
Then once you have been through all of that, come back and ask for clarification
on any specific points that you have trouble understanding.
Finally (Because the Finally always gets executed) Try taking a class in java programming.
