Error indentifying table in database through JDBC

I have the following table defined in the
'starter' Oracle database after default installation:
Table name = employees
Schema = SYSTEM
Tablespace = USR
I can add, read, delete records in this table
using SQL*Plus with the following sign on credentials:
password = SYSTEM
username = MANAGER
connection string = ORACLE
However, when I try to manipulate the same
Employees table through JDBC using the following credentials:
driver = "oracle.jdbc.driver.OracleDriver";
url = "jdbc:oracle:thin:@chupamonkey-ny:1521:ORACLE"
password = "change_on_install";
OR
password = "manager";
username = "sys";
OR
username = "system";
I consistently get the following error:
main (11:15:58): DatabaseUtilities.createTable error: ORA-00942: table or view does not exist
What is the trick to setting the table you want to manipulate using JDBC to be visible in BOTH SQL*Plus and JDBC?
Thanks,
Bill

I do things like that every day, there's nothing wrong with the general approach (assuming your database is an Oracle database.)
Specifically, what problems are you having? "It didn't work" is a very poor problem description...

    The name of the database is 9876?
    Plan A: save yourself trouble and start database/table/column names with a letter.
    Plan B: if you really must, try quoting the database name: create database "9867".

    Hi,

  • Avoiding concurrency errors when updating a database through AJAX

    What are some strategies for avoiding concurrency errors when updating a database through AJAX. That is, in cases where a given user could attempt to modify the same row in the database with simultaneous requests (say, that he updates one column with information with an AJAX call, then immediately submits a form that updates the same row), what are some good ways yo prevent the two updates from colliding? On the JavaScript side one might make the AJAX call synchronous, but I question whether that is the best way to do it. Has anyone else confronted this?

    Well, since no one seems to have any ideas so far, I'll throw in my two cents worth.
    I'm not too familiar with AJAX so my advice may be limited.
    I suggest you do a google search on Optimistic concurrency database to get some ideas on how to handle it.
    If your update/insert/delete query is thread safe, then even if the same user double clicks the button fast enough to immediately have another update to the same record, then the first update will complete before the second one is carried out. Therefore no harm is done since he is just updating the same record. Since a typical update/insert/delete takes only a few milliseconds (querying may take a lot more time), its not likely he can click the button that fast. (I assume your using connection pooling for speed).
    The trouble comes up when two people call up data from the same record in different browsers. The first one updates/inserts/deletes the record. Now the other user is looking at old data. When he updates/inserts/deletes, there is a problem. One way to handle this is to keep a copy of all the fields from that record in each user's session scope when they first fetch it from the database (example: oldName). Then when you go to update some time later, to this:
    sql= update person set name=newValue where personID=3344 and name=oldName
    Note oldName is from session scope.
    If name in the database has changed, the update will not occur and will return 0 records updated. If it didn't change, it will update.
    Note your update function should not throw an exception if it cant update, it should return false. Return true if it worked.
    Example: public boolean updateName(String name)
    Similiarly, your insert should not throw an exception if the record already exists, it should return false meaning it cant insert.
    Exaple: public bolean insertName(String name). Same thing with delete function.
    If a record cant be updated due to someone else updating the record while the user was looking at data, return a message that it wasn't updated due to that problem. Then show the user the new value in the database ask him if he wants to overwrite the new change.
    Note even if you show 100 records on the JSP, only update the ones that have changed and not all 100. This way, its not likely he has updated the same records someone else has altered. Less likely a colision compared to updating all 100.
    If your updating/inserting/deleting more than 1 record (say, 3), then you should look into setting up a transaction in addition to all the above and rolling back all of them if one fails.
    Reading the section on databases from http://www.javapractices.com/home/HomeAction.do may also help.

  • Error During restoring a database through RMAN in Oracle 9i

    Hi all,
    I have taken a full backup in oracle 9i through RMAN in one server(Solaris).
    After that moved that backupset to another server. Server Locations are same. I need to restore the backup in the new server.
    I am using pfile.
    Steps I followed:
    1. Using pfile i have started the db in nomount.
    2. Then restored the controlfile from backup and mounted the database.
    3. then tried to restore the database - I have to restore three of my datafiles to different location, hence i used "set new name "
    But RMAN threw an error while restoring.

    Thanks, but I took the backup of the database using the command:
    backup database;Only this command i issued.
    In the new server, I tried to list the backup using list backup command by putting the db in mount stage.

    Your Help will be very much appreciate.I am using SQL Server database

    The error concerns these two lines:
    boolean success = insertIntoDB("'" + FirstName + "','" + LastName + "','" + Email + "','" + Login + "','" + Password + "'");
    statement.execute("INSERT INTO Users(user_id,FirstName,LastName,Email,Login,Password) values (" + stringtoinsert + ");");
    In the first line above, you have a string which represents the VALUES which you are inserting. There are 5 values. However in the second line above this is your actual SQL execution you are specifying 6 columns of data. If the column "user_id" is an identity or auto-incrementing field in the database, just remove it from this line. If not then you need to supply the "UserID" into the VALUES.
    This should fix the problem.

  • Creating table in Database

    Hi,
    Can we create a table in database through XI, using JDBC Adapter?
    Thanks,
    Yogi.

    Hi Yogi,
    As far as I know, the commands we specify in JDBC Adapter are DML commands.No DDL commands can be issued there..so we can't create a Table using JDBC Adapter.

  • Error - '.' expected - while database insert thru JSP & javabeans & JDBC

    I get the following error when i try to compile the below mentioned code in JDEVELOPER 10.1.2
    Error : '.' expected
    ===================
    have error in my code. I am trying to do a simple database insert program using javabeans and jsp. I get a value to be inserted in database through the jsp page in a text box and would like to be inserted into database using beans The connection to database and mysql query are in java file.
    Here is the code.
    <%@page contentType="text/html"%>
    <%@page pageEncoding="UTF-8"%>
    <%@ page language="Java" import="java.sql.*" %>
    <%@ taglib prefix="c" uri="http://java.sun.com/jsp/jstl/core" %>
    <%@ taglib prefix="sql" uri="http://java.sun.com/jsp/jstl/sql" %>
    <html>
    <head>
    </head>
    <body>
    <form name="form1" action="beancode" method="POST">
    Emp ID: <input type="text" name ="emplid"> <br><br><br>
    <input type = "submit" value="Submit">
    <jsp:useBean id="sampl" class="beancode" scope="page">
    <jsp:setProperty name="sampl" property="*"/>
    </jsp:useBean>
    </form>
    </body>
    </html>
    I know i might have made a mistake here in using the bean. Here is the java code which does the insert part.
    import java.sql.Connection;
    import java.sql.DriverManager;
    import java.sql.PreparedStatement;
    import java.sql.ResultSet;
    * @author Trainees
    public class beancode
    private String employid;
    private Connection con = null;
    private ResultSet rs = null;
    private PreparedStatement st = null;
    /** Creates a new instance of beancode */
    public beancode()
    try
              Class.forName("org.gjt.mm.mysql.Driver");
              Connection con = DriverManager.getConnection("jdbc:mysql://localhost:3306/sample?user=user&password=password");
    catch(Exception e)
              System.out.println(e.getMessage());
    public void setemployid(String empid)
              employid = empid;
         public String getemployid()
              return (employid);
    public void insert()
    try
    String s1="insert into samp values('"+employid+"')";
    st = con.prepareStatement(s1);
    st.executeUpdate();
    st.clearParameters();
    st.close();
    catch(Exception m)
    }

    It's pretty hard to spot any errors the way it's currently formatted. But, you're trying to call the beancode when submitting your form, but the beancode isn't a servlet. Try to find a working example, run it, and then change it to implement your requirements.
    The following example shows you have to use the jstl sql tags: http://www.oracle.com/technology/sample_code/tech/java/codesnippet/jsps/jstlsql.html. If you want to do an insert when a user submits a form, you need 2 pages. The first will contain your form, the second will insert the record.
    (once you've got that running, look for some examples using an mvc framework, and how to use bind variables with jdbc)
