Error Installing Oracle 9i on Linux. Please help.

Hi folks,
While installing Oracle 9i on RedHat Linux 8.0, I am unable to configure and start and listener process. The error message it throws back is that "unable to configure as the information provided is being used by another software. Unless that conflict is resolved, you will not be able to start the listener process...blah blah blah...".
Can somebody please help me understand this problem and resolve it.
Thanks in advance.
Rajesh.

By the way I forgot to include the information about the listener configuration that I was trying to setup.
Listener Name : LISTENER
Protocol : TCP
Port # : 1521.
I also tried couple of other port number, but it did not work. So to make sure that these port numbers are really not locked by other software, I connected as root and executed the following command
netstat -a | grep 1521 (and other numbers also that I tried using).
Found that these ports were really not locked by anyone else.
Thanks.
Rajesh.

  • Do I need to install oracle 8i or 9i Please help

    Hi,
    I am a newbie to Redhat linux and Oracle. I have Redhat 9.0 installed on my machine. Now I have a doubt whether to install Oracle 9i or 8i. Some of my friends told me that Oracle 8i is very easier to configure than Oracle 9i. I think I am not fit for a tough configuration as I am a newbie. This is true? Is Oracle 9i is very difficult to configure than Oracle 8i? My aim is to get familiar with the Oracle and its all the features and to seriously play around with the good features of Oracle. So should I go for Oracle 9i? As I am a newbie, Is it nessessary to go for Oracle 9i?
    Please help me . I am waiting for your answer to get proceed with the Installation.
    Lot of Thanks in Advance.
    Waiting for your respondse.
    Bye
    Thanks and Regards

    Hi,
    unfortunately you will have more general problems. Neither 8i nor 9i is certified for Red Hat 9. The certification matrix shows support for Red Hat 7.0 and 7.1 (9i) and for Red Hat 7.0/7.1/6.x (8i). That does not necessarily mean, it won't work at all, but Oracle doesn't give any support. In general, you should prefer 9i, you have much more options. If you perform, as a first step, a standard installation, it's not harder than an 8i installation.
    Good luck

  • ClassNotFound Error with Oracle 10g...please help!

    Hello everyone!
    I am currently using jdk 1.4.2_10 with Oracle 10g. I tried to connect to the database, like this:
    try{
    String driverName = "oracle.jdbc.driver.OracleDriver";
    String serverName = "***.***.*.*";
    String portNumber = "****";
    String sid = "****";
    String url = "jdbc:oracle:thin:@" + serverName + ":" + portNumber + ":" + sid;
    String usr = "*****";
    String pwd = "*****";
    //Load the JDBC driver
    Class.forName(driverName);
    //Connect to the base
    connect = DriverManager.getConnection(url,usr,pwd);
    catch(ClassNotFoundException e){
    System.out.println("Error---No database driver");
    catch(SQLException s){
    System.out.println("Error---No connection to the database");
    Here is what's in my classpath, (i added the ojdbc14.jar) :
    c:\oracle\product\10.2.0\client_2\jdbc\lib\ojdbc14.jar;
    C:\Program Files\QuickTime\QTSystem\QTJava.zip
    Can anyone please help me?
    It's really a problem, i've been searching for 2 days now.....
    thank you

    Most likely it is about
    oracle.jdbc.driver.OracleDriver
    You need to include Oracle JDBC lib.
    If you are using JDeveloper then:
    In Project properties click on Libraries
    Click AddLibrary
    In the list that appears choose Oracle JDBC

    Ubuntu is not a certified distro for installing 11gR2 XE - http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E17781_01/install.112/e18802/toc.htm#BABGGAJA - so things may or may not work as advertised. You will have to troubleshoot any issues on your own, whether they relate to the install process or the workings of the software after the install.
    Pl use a certified OS version.

    Hi,
    Can any one give me any solution on i getting an error after installing oracle 10g on linux.
    ERROR:-

    Hi, please ensure that both 'libclntsh.so.10.1' and 'libttsh10.so' has 755 permission and owned by Oracle.
    That is the critical step.
    After re-execute the root.sh file
    Has been known to reset the permissions from the previous step - bug in some patch releases.
    Suggest OP records permissions for those two files before running root.sh Or run root.sh before setting the permissions.

    If you are running OEL-4 (2.6.9 kernel) and you have an ULN account, you can download kernel-sourcecode rpm from ULN. There is no kernel-sourcecode for OEL-5 available on ULN site.

When I ran xterm, I got can't open dispaly. xhost + also dosn't work. Is that ok that I can install oracle in a linux that is installed in windows virtual server? What value can I set to DISPLAY value?
    Thank in advance.

    Linux 9? You mean the one that was end-of-lifed in 2004? (Just checking ...)
    If yes, you gotta decide whether it's the 'Linux 9 Boxed Version' or the 'Linux 9 Download Version'. The two have completely different compiler and glibc packages that are incompatible. Fix that incompatibility - relative to Oracle's needs - and you will be able to make Oracle9i limp along.
