Error submitting environment variable containing spaces

Hello,
I need some help passing an environment variable that contains spaces to the JVM when launched via the command line
I can successfully use the following and read its value in the java application:
java -DMYVAR=value.cfg myClass
However, when I try
java -DMYVAR="value1.cfg, value2.cfg, value3.cfg" myClass
I get the following exception
Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: value2/cfg"
It looks like the inverted commas are being discarded and the JVM is treating value2.cfg as a class to execute
I have run this on
1) a Solaris box with the following details:
SunOS trafford 5.6 Generic_105181-26 sun4u sparc SUNW,Ultra-4
and java version
java version "1.2.1"
Solaris VM (build Solaris_JDK_1.2.1_04, native threads, sunwjit)
2) an HP box with the following details:
HP-UX wpsc02 B.11.00 U 9000/800 105911507 unlimited-user license
and java version
java version "1.4.1.00"
Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build 1.4.1.00-030116-09:58)
Java HotSpot(TM) Server VM (build 1.4.1 1.4.1.00-030116-11:27-PA_RISC2.0 PA2.0, mixed mode)
We want to do this so that we can get the value of MYVAR, split up the string using a StringTokenizer on the "," and pick out as many tokens as are present. As a workaround, we can leave out the spaces and it works fine, but it would be useful to be able to allow the spaces
Thanks in advance to anyone who has any ideas about what is happening or how to solve this

Try this:
java "-DMYVAR=value1.cfg, value2.cfg, value3.cfg" myClass
Notice the quotes are in front of the -D, not the equal sign.

  • Error Setting Environment Variable inside Listner.ora

    Hi,
I am trying to set an environment variable inside listner.ora as follows
    (ENVS="EXTPROC_DLLS=ANY,LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/opt/app/oracle/product/9.2/lib32:/opt/app/oracle/product/9.2/network/lib32:/usr/lib:/usr/X11R6:/usr/dt/lib,LIBPATH=/opt/app/oracle/product/9.2/lib32,MQSERVER=SYSTEM.DEF.SVRCONN/TCP/ashsou03.mcilink.com(4444)")
but every time I try to start the listner it gives me the following error:
    TNS-01155: Incorrectly specified SID_LIST_LISTENER parameter in LISTENER.ORA
NL-00303: syntax error in NV string
I think that the parenthses, (4444), in the MQSERVER value is causing this. Any ideas on how I can configure it?

  • Issues with Indirect xml configuration using environment variable

My package is not retrieving the the connection strings from the xml file setup through indirect configuration. It is using the connection string directly from the connection manager in the package. Steps below,
Package-1 has Connection Manager with server : dev, database: Test
Setup indirect xml configuration : XML file contains the connection string. Environment variable contains the path to the xml.
Build and deploy on different server (prod).
Create the same environment variable in prod server.
Change conenction string in xml file.
Run the package: package tries to connect to dev instead of prod.
Change the connection string in the connection manager directly in the package. Build and deploy. Works now - connects to prod as expected.
For some reason my package is not reading from the xml file.

You posted on this issue before and now again, why?
The "It is using the connection string directly from the connection manager in the package" means the package fails to configure from the conn string in the env. variable.
You may see it as a warning in the log if you have one enabled.
The env variable should have the path to the config file, the config file should be parametrized to get the connection to it via the variable, this is the proper scenario.

  • PS Get-Content - file containing environement variable

    Hello
I have an issue with a script where I have a text file containing folders and files. I get them with Get-Content and then I copy them somewhere else.
My problem is that I would like to be able to use environement variable in the text file, like D:\$env:USERNAME\Documents but when I get them through Get-Content, variable are not converted.
Is there a way to make Powershell recognizing variables in the path ?
    Thanks !

Invoke-Expression is not needed in this case. I recommend the $ExecutionContext.InvokeCommand.ExpandString method instead.
    -- Bill Stewart [Bill_Stewart]
I'm open to suggestions, (even though what I suggested was demonstrated and works).
I took your advice and tried your suggestion
    PS C:\Users\User>
    Add-Content C:\liste.txt 'D:\$env:USERNAME\Documents'
    Add-Content C:\liste.txt 'D:\Documents'
    $sourcelist = get-content C:\liste.txt | foreach-object {
    $ExecutionContext.InvokeCommand.ExpandString($_)
There is no output? So I tried assigning it to a variable.
    PS C:\Users\User>
    Add-Content C:\liste.txt 'D:\$env:USERNAME\Documents'
    Add-Content C:\liste.txt 'D:\Documents'
    $sourcelist = get-content C:\liste.txt | foreach-object {
    $Path = $ExecutionContext.InvokeCommand.ExpandString($_)
    $Path
LOL, there is still no output.

  • Unable to start java tools - Error : Environment variable JAVA_HOME not set

    hi all,
I am not able to start the java tool - Visual Admin, Configtool, etc in the solaris Bash shell.
I was given authorizations on solaris and i'm able to view the logs and browse in solaris boxes,
But, when i try to start Visual Admin, it says" ERROR environment variable JAVA_HOME not set "
Since,my colleagues are using this tool for years, how come the environment variable is not set only for my user profile ?
Is it like the environment variable has to set seperately for every user profile ?
Do i need to set it initially for my profile eventhough it is working for others ?
    i am confused..please help.
    Addy

Nicholls, Thanks for your quick reply.
Ofcourse, I use my login ID to use java tools and they use their's obviously.I don't use <SID>adm.
We WRQ reflection for X-Windows and Putty for Command line Solaris Access.
When i try to use VA through the X-Window tool WRQ reflection, I am not able to start the tool.
My doubt here is, Do we need to setup the environment variable for every new user initially for the first time ? ( I am a new user for this environment )
Supposing if i need to setup the environment variable, do i need to set it up for the all the Solaris Boxes i use ?
I am able to browse through the files.when i try to start the VA by giving ./go i am not able to start it up.
Appreciate your time and valuable replies.

  • Http Request - error in URL when params contain spaces

Hi friends , I invoke a servlet from a HTTP client using the GET method. I pass two Strings which contain spaces and non-english alphabets.
I get malformed URL when I invoke the servlet with these parameters in the URL.
Can someone please help and tell me how to pass spaces and special characters in the URL. Do I need to use some escape characters?
    TIA
    Harish

You can encode the strings prior to passing them to the servlet as follows:
    String parm1="http://www.mySite.com/this includes spacees/test.htm";
    String param2=" what ever in non-english alphabets";
    parm1=URLEncoder.encode(parm1);
    parm2=URLEncoder.encode(parm2);

  • Using environment variable / double quotes in "Arguments" in "Server Start"

I have an admin server, NodeManager, and 1 managed server, all on the same machine (windows). I am trying to enter something similar to this to the arguments field in the Server Start tab:
    -Dmy.property=%USERPROFILE%\someDir\someJar.jar
But when the managed server is started it throws this exception:
Error opening zip file or JAR manifest missing : %USERPROFILE%\someDir\someJar.jar
It appears that the environment variable is not being translated into it's value. It is just passed on to the managed server as plain-text. I tried surrounding the path with double quotes (") but the console validates the input and does not allow this: *"Arguments may not contain '"'"*
Even editing the config.xml file manually cannot work, as the admin server fails to startup after this:
    <Critical> <WebLogicServer> <BEA-000362> <Server failed. Reason: [Management:141266]Parsing failure in config.xml: java.lang
.IllegalArgumentException: Arguments may not contain '"'.>
I also tried using %20 to no avail, it is just passed as %20.
I thought that perhaps this had something to do with the spaces in the value of %USERPROFILE% (which is "C:\documents and settings.."), but the same thing happens with other env. variables which point to other directories with no spaces.
    _My question:_
Is there any supported way of :
using double quotes? what if i have to reference a folder with spaces in it's name?
reference an environment variable? What if i have to rely on it's value for distributed servers where i do not know in advance the variable's value?

I've set my environment detail but when I use javac the command window just does nothing. The cursor (or flashing thingo) drops to the line below and just hangs there. If i manually type in the entire path javac works fine.
Image of my environment variable window is here:

Using Windows 7, JDK 1.6.0_18 and latest version of Eclipse is installed.
    Second issue:
I wrote a program using Eclipse. It all went into a package named "openagil". 3 classes in total. Class "A", "B", "C". A uses both B and C. It creates an instance of B and C. Included in each is package openagil; at the very top.
Running in eclipse it works fine. However, how do I compile this using javac and then in turn run it? The .java files are located within a workbench folder (java) and then in the package directory (openagil). These are contained on the D drive so "d:\java\openagil" - No class variables are set as I am unsure how this is done (despite reading a few guides).
I can do javac d:\...*.java and it'll compile all of them fine but I am then unsure how to run it. I think what I do is do java openagil.classA but this pulls up errors - an "exception in thread' error followed by a "noclassdeffound: openagil/classA" then a whole bunch of URL/Access Controller stuff.
I understand programming fine, but configuring this is a bitch. My Java book doesn't cover installation nor does it cover packages and the

I think it would be java -cp d:\java openagil.classAFYI class naming convention is to start with a capital letter - YourMainClass for example. It may help to go here [http://java.sun.com/javase/6/docs/technotes/tools/index.html] and go to General Information, then click on How Classes Are Found.

  • Set DISPLAY environment variable -- in DBCA not working at AIX OS

    Hi,
I want to create new database in AIX OS and database is oracle 10g:-
When i say DBCA it is giving below error, what should i do?
    $ dbca
    DISPLAY not set.
Set DISPLAY environment variable, then re-run.
    Please help...

How to set the DISPLAY environment variable in AIX?Usual format is:
    +<host>:<display-number>+
    E.g.
    export DISPLAY=192.168.0.235:1
Where the host is the hostname or IP address of the client platform running a X-Server. If the X-Server is running locally, then this entry can be omitted.
The display-number is the display number of the X-Server to use. A single X-Server can have multiple displays. E.g. Unix server running a X-Server can have 10 users connected via X-Terminals and will this have 10 displays.
Judging from X-Windows questions asked on OTN, it seems to be a tad complex to grasp for some - especially those from a MS Windows background as X-Windows is very different and also reverses the client-server concept, requiring the X-Server component to be running on the client platform (where the server platform runs the program that is the X-client).
So it is a lot easier to rather use something like VNC instead - supported on most Unix platforms, Linux, Windows and Apple's OS/X.
Simply run the VNC server on the server platform to create a virtual container for running the X-server display. Connect from a client using a VNC client.
As it uses the RFB (Remote Frame Buffer) protocol, it is a lot faster than running the slower and larger X11 protocol required for X-Windows connectivity over TCP/IP.

  • Who can tell me the details about "JMSJVMOPTS" environment variable of JMSC API

I have a question about JMS C API.
When in windows service application, JMSContectCreate return JMS_JVM_ERROR error.
But in desktop app, it does well.
I think I may need set the JMSJVMOPTS environment variable.
But how to set JMSJVMOPTS ?

    OK,
The JMSJVMOPTS are extra options passed to the "java" executable itself
              along with
              "-Djava.class.path=${CLASSPATH}"
Hence, the actual things you can set with this depend on which java compiler
you are using. If you are using the Sun JVM for instance, here are some of
the options you can set (from java -?)
              where options include:
-client to select the "client" VM
-server to select the "server" VM
-hotspot is a synonym for the "client" VM [deprecated]
              The default VM is client.
-cp -classpath <directories and zip/jar files separated by ;>
set search path for application classes and resources
              -D<name>=<value>
              set a system property
              -verbose[:class|gc|jni]
              enable verbose output
-version print product version and exit
-showversion print product version and continue
-? -help print this help message
-X print help on non-standard options
              -ea[:<packagename>...|:<classname>]
              -enableassertions[:<packagename>...|:<classname>]
              enable assertions
              -da[:<packagename>...|:<classname>]
              -disableassertions[:<packagename>...|:<classname>]
              disable assertions
              -esa | -enablesystemassertions
              enable system assertions
              -dsa | -disablesystemassertions
              disable system assertions
As far as what sort of things can cause a JMS_JVM_ERROR from
JmsContextCreate the answer is that there are many, many reasons this might
be happening. Please look for a file named ULOG.<mmddyy> (where mmddyy is
month/day/year - for example ULOG.081403) somewhere on your system (I am not
sure where this file would go being run from a W2K service). That "userlog"
file should contain more information about why the failure occurred.
Also, you can set JMSDEBUG=y in your environment which will print to stdout
(again, not sure where stdout goes in a system service) stack traces and
other debugging information into the ULOG file.
              Hope this helps...

    Hello,
    This is fixed now,
    1. cleared the classpath in the environment variables(my computer) ,
    2. uninstalled jdev and weblogic,
    3. deleted the oracle/middleware folder
    4. searched under registry entries as middleware and deleted all of them,
    5. rebooted and reinstalled, worked...
    Thanks for your inputs...............
