Essbase Logfile

Gurus, I have a quick question about log file.
I ran a MAXL: import database "sample"."sample" data from local text data_file "location" ,,,,
Now basically when I check the log file, which we call "sample_log.log" we usually see the MAXL line followed by lines such as:
OK/INFO - 1019061 - reading rule....
OK/INFO - 101... - READING...
So these are the lines that we usualy see.
However, when I loaded data today, i dont see any of those OK/INFO lines.
What could be the problem with this?

That's right John. That's exactly the case.
It's a minor problem, since I use unique log file names...
Are you maybe aware of this being fixed in a later ODI version?

I found a work around / solution: go to someone else's PC with a successful install and copy the workspace folder --- C:\Oracle\Middleware\EPMSystem11R1\products\Essbase\EssbaseStudio\Console\workspace\ -- and paste it into the same location on your PC. I think that some time during the install, even if you "Run as Administrator", these folders and files do not get created because there is insufficient access rights in Windows 7. I hope this helps someone!

Not getting data from Essbase in Answers...

Been somewhat mystified by this problem. We have several Essbases which we would like to use i OBIEE. The metadata is imported into a RPD and made available in Answers. When making a report and trying to run, it says that the query generated no results. Ive checked, double and triple checked that were I look for data, there actually is data. Ive been checking with Essbase and the data is there.
The funny thing is, that when I test on the Essbase DEMO database, and can see data fine, and drill about.
The only thing I can find is in the the logfile, where it gives me the following error. The error message below here is the one that makes the most sense...

Can this be about some privileges on the Essbase server? We are using OBIEE 11.1.1.3 and Essbase 9.3.3.

I think I have your answer.
The 11g Release only supports connectivity with Essbase 11.1.1.2 out of the box.
Clearly you need to pull over the correct Essbase client libraries for any other version of Essbase that is not 11.1.1.2 and put them in the appropriate location on your BI Server. In addition you are using Essbase System 9 which actually requires a patch to integrate into OBIEE 11g. If you haven't done on or more steps above then your integration with OBIEE 11g will have difficulties perhaps like what you are experiencing.
A wrote a post last month partially on this topic but you can see where its going from here, http://www.artofbi.com/index.php/2011/03/configure-obi-11g-for-essbase-metadata-import-integration-ootb/. I think a search on support.oracle.com will turn up the path for Essbase System 9 integration with OBIEE 11g but I believe you'll need a password (get from Oracle Support contact) to get it.

Can't start Foundation Services on Windows XP, Essbase 11.1.2

Installation and & configuration were fine and everything worked for a while. Machine was rebooted. After that, I tried : "EPM System Start" from start menu, but it fails starting foundation services. I tried starting only Foundation services ... It is the same. In the starter log I can see:

I need to run Admin Services Console & essmsh. If I try to run Admin Service Console it has error: "Could not connect to admin server" and after thae "EAS server not available". How can I start Essbase? After reboot, I can see only Hyperion Integration service started - all others not (they are set to Automatic start). Also, I see ESSBASE.exe process and couple of opmn.exe ...
Does anything else has to be started before starting EPM System start script? I really appreciate any help!

Can't you install Essbase 11.1.1.x to not use Shared Services?
From the 11.1.1.3 install guide:
If you want to install Essbase in standalone mode (not using Shared Services), you can skip the installation for Shared Services. However, you must configure the Oracle's Hyperion Shared Services Registry database. To configure the Shared Services Registry database without installing Shared Services, see “Setting Up the Shared Services Registry Without Installing Shared Services” on page 112.And from page 112:

However, you must still configure the Shared Services Registry database. To configure the Shared Services Registry database without installing Shared Services, you run EPM System Configurator from the command line using the –forceRegistry option. EPM System Configurator populates the database with tables for the Shared Services Registry, but not for Shared Services.I'm pretty sure people are running Essbase on XP boxes. For sure XP isn't a supported environment.

Automate start/stop essbase service using Maxl or batch

Hi - how would my batch or Maxl file look like if I wanted to come out with a script to stop and start my essbase service? The reason why i am doing this is because I wanted to stop the essbase service, so that I can archive the essbase.log file.
I am on essbase 7.0, I have read on some postings that stopping and starting the essbase service can potentially corrupt the sec file. If so, then is there any other way of archive the essbase.log file so that it does not grow to megs.

You could use the following maxl
alter system shudown;
it may be useful to stop all the applications first e.g.
alter system unload application all;
or you can use windows command line
net stop essbaseservicename
and to start
net start essbaseservicename
Another method to backup the essbase.log is to make a copy of the log then use maxl to delete the log.
alter system clear logfile;

Migrating Essbase cube across versions via file system

A large BSO cube has been taking much longer to complete a 'calc all' in Essbase 11.1.2.2 than on Essbase 9.3.1 despite all Essbase.cfg, app and db settings being same (https://forums.oracle.com/thread/2599658).
As a last resort, I've tried the following-
1. Calc the cube on the 9.3.1 server.
2. Use EAS Migration Wizard to migrate the cube from the 9.3.1 server to the 11.1.2.2 server.
3. File system transfer of all ess*.ind and ess*.pag from 9.3.1\app\db folder to 11.1.2.2\app\db folder (at this point a retrieval from the 11.1.2.2 server does not yet return any data).
4. File system transfer of the dbname.esm file from 9.3.1\app\db folder to 11.1.2.2\app\db folder (at this point a retrieval from the 11.1.2.2 server returns an "unable to load database dbname" error and an "Invalid transaction status for block -- Please use the IBH Locate/Fix utilities to find/fix the problem" error).
5. File system transfer of the dbname.tct file from 9.3.1\app\db folder to 11.1.2.2\app\db folder (and voila! Essbase returns data from the 11.1.2.2 server and numbers match with the 9.3.1 sever).
This almost seems too good to be true. Can anyone think of any dangers of migrating apps this way? Has nothing changed in file formats between Essbase 9.x and 11.x? Won't not transferring the dbname.ind and dbname.db files cause any issues down the road? Thankfully we are soon moving to ASO for this large BSO cube, so this isn't a long term worry.

Freshly install the Essbase 11.1.2.2 on Window server 2008 r-2 with the recommended hardware specification. After Installation configure 11.1.2.2 with the DB/Schema
Take the all data back up of the essbase applications using script export or directly exporting from the cube.
Use the EAS Migration wizard to migrate the essbase applications
After the Migrating the applications successfully,reLoad all the data into cube.
For the 4th Point
IBH error generally caused when there is a mismatch in the index file and the PAG file while e executing the calculation script .Possible solutions are available
The recommended procedure is:
a)Disable all logins.
alter application sample disable connects;
b)Forcibly log off all users.
alter system logout session on database sample.basic;
c)Run the MaxL statement to get invalid block header information.
alter database sample.basic validate data to local logfile 'invalid_blocks';
d)Repair invalid block headers
alter database sample.basic repair invalid_block_headers;

Essbase MaxL Help : URGENT

Hello,
I want to write a maxL script in which I want to implement the following process:---
1)login to essbase
2) then login to one RDBMS database and check some fields in that relational schema and if those fields are satisfying some conditions (if and then conditions) then run the Dimension build rule and data load rule
3) then run calcscript
4) then if any error, save the logfile and then logout from essbase
Would you please help me on how to implement the second point above in maxL script ? Could you please share some relevant sample maxL codes ?

Why don't you interchange your steps .
Step-2 : check what you need to check in RDBMS first through whatever means.
then login to essbase and do whatever things you want . It is possibe to call batch files and scripts from RDBMS .
your batch file with have Maxl code on what you want to do . ( including logging into essbase)
Simply logging into Essbase as Step-1 seems unnecessary to me .
Trying to do things in RDBMS from Maxl will not be possible and even if possible is more difficult because you have to analyze the return status .

Migration Essbase 7.x

A step for the migration is..execute alter database validate command in MaxL against database, what is this command? what is your sintaxis? because in the documentation dont appear.

Look in the Technical Reference installed with Essbase documentation.Example:alter database sample.basic validate data to local logfile 'invalid_blocks';Hope this helps.

We have recently upgraded to Essbase 7.1We have the DELIMITEDMSG TRUE entry in our essbase.cfg file.Since the upgrade to 7.1 the log files for each application no longer have a CR/LF at the end of each entry.They are just run together into an extremely long line.However, when we look at the application window on the Essbase server the messages appear on separate lines.Has anyone else run into this problem?Is there a new essbase.cfg setting that we need to use?We take the log file for each application and load it into a logfile cube each month and this becomes very difficult if each message is not on it's own line in the file.Any help would be appreciated.

You could create a maxl script that replaces the filters, when you call the maxl script you could pass in a variable such as YR08 and use that variable in the script.

I know that in ASO, each parent should have at least one child that aggregate with +.Did you make sure that the members properties are OK (i.e. not all children at ~) ?Not respecting this prevent from saving the Outline.If you want to keep ~ for all children, then the parent should be Label Only.I hope this helps.Denis

Hyperion Essbase Error: 1002097 Unable to load database [PlanType1]

Hello,
I am running Hyperion Essbase 9.2.0.3 version. This has happened 3 times now since last 2 weeks. I had to restore the APP folder from previous backup.
The message that i see is Error: 1002097 Unable to load database [PlanType1]
I have searched google and no luck. Anyone knows how to fix this or why we get this message. I don't want to restore from backup everytime.

Solution would be easy ...like if the Essbase Agent is stopped using the services.msc (services panal)on Windows while a process is currently running, or if there has been an abnormal termination of the Essbase Agent, orphaned ESSSVR processes can be left. Shuting down the Essbase server using ESSCMD or MaxL then Check Task Manager confirm the ESSBASE.exe process later by this ESSSVR.exe processes should end if still NO then Do an "End Process" on any ESSSVR.exe process that is still running. Start the Essbase service and start the application.
ESSSVR.exe is process which keep application Alive (bad thing is if u have many applications running similarlly u have same numbe of ESSSVr .exe will be running in task master ..but u cant find out which one belongs to which application :( )
Reasons
looking at your error i can say , First of all you need to know what is Lock in EAS ? and what locks exist
(right-click on Essbase Servername, EDIT->LOCK and EDIT->LOCKED OBJECTS, and if your database/outline appears in there, unlock it.)
Check any antivirus- and backup software that may be scanning / running on your Essbase folders as that can lock the files and any ESSSVR process stays when the Essbase Agent is stopped
More over another chance of getting error is when you have you page and index files in different location and rest otl, rep.csc script in another drive .. usually while taking back up in OTL,csc drive u do get created index file and page file even u have page and index file in diffrent drive so doe to this u get this error unable to load database

I am currently getting the same error, it happens randomly on different models each day at around the same time. I have found this error on the log for one model.

I think the data files are locked by something, I am checking with our server team to see when the backups run as there are no other processes running at this time in Essbase. Incidentally the model has 15 .pag files.

there's no such functionality in EAL to create Essbase outlines based on levels. the only workaround to this is to use Mapping tables:
1- create the dimension in essbase with the desired HFM level 1 members as level 0.
2- set this specific dimension to mapping in your design grid within your EAL Bridge
3- create the SQL Mapping table and start mapping those members from HFM to Essbase.
