Example of a formula in a text field

Is it possible to input an example of a formula in a text field?
For example:
          (To get abc - EFG)
HIJ=           KLM
thanks

Okay,
If you want static instructions to support a textfield, you could use a text object. You can type in the formula at design time. The advantage is that the user cannot interact/change this the formula.
Another option is to use the caption of the textfield object to show the formula.
You can also set up a null pattern in the textfield object, so that the formula appears if the user has not put in a value into the field.
Lastly, you can also use the textfield object to contain the formula, by going to the Object > Value palette and inputting the formula as the default value.
If you have a problem with any of these come back,

  • Please, help with text field on form

    Hello,
    I am creating a form.  I have a text field where the person will type a number into text field and I need it to also enter in another text field.  For example, the person enters 23 into text field 12, I also need the entry of text field 12 to show up in text field 63.  Is this possible?  I'm VERY new to this, so a step by step response would be greatly appreciated!
    Thank You!!!
    Debby

    This requires a script as you have to first verify that the denominator is not blank or zero, or you'll get an invalid operation.
    Something like this should work as the custom calculation script of your field:
    var s1 = this.getField("Text2").valueAsString;
    var s2 = this.getField("Text3").valueAsString;
    if (s1!="" && s2!="" && Number(s2)!=0) event.value = Number(s1)/Number(s2);
    else event.value = "";

    I need help replacing a comma with a Semicolon in a text field.
    I have a field that has names separated by commas.
    Ex: Dog, Cat, Bird, Horse, Eagle, Worm, Snake
    I would like a calculated column that converts the field into: Dog; Cat; Bird; Horse; Eagle; Worm; Snake
    I figured out the first three positions (Dog, Cat, Bird,) but I can't figure out the rest.
    Using the formula below.

  • Adding an 'Example Text' in Form Text Fields

    Hi,
    I was wondering if anyone knows how to set the text which is temporarily in a text field in a form.
    It usually displays an example of what the user should be inputting into the field. (In italics and greyed out, and dissapears once the user click on the field to start typing.)
    Here is a link to a site which has this in their forms: DJ-Direct - Get A Quote
    Any help would be very much appreciated!
    Thank you

    Hi,
    Thanks for your help.
    I have got it working on text fields, but how do I do it for dropdown menus?
    For text fields the code is:
    <input name="name" type="text" class="formfield" id="name" placeholder="Example" />
    But for the dropdown it is:
    <select name="Size" class="formfield" id="Size">
    My code for the Dropdown list is as follows:
    <label for="size"></label>

  • Need to add superscript for text field--HELP NEEDED.

    Hi Friends,
    Is there any way to implement superscript and subscript text in Crystal?  For example, I would like to superscript the portion (1) of the following string:
    "Buy(1) or Sell(1)"
    The only way I have found to do this is to put the "235" in a separate text field that uses a smaller font size, and overlay it into the gap that I intentionally left in the larger text field.  For display and printing purposes, this works OK, but if a report containing these strings is exported to Excel, the text fields are exported as separate cells, which makes the exported report look funny.
    I can create this string in Word, then cut and paste it into a text field in Crystal (which initially seems to work), but as soon as I click off the field, all the characters in it are converted to the same font size.
    If this can't be done in the current version of Crystal, are there any plans for it to be implemented in future versions?

    hello all,
    the text interpretation for html or rtf in fields will not render superscript or subscript. the basic rule is that whatever you can format directly in a crystal reports text object, that's what you can have interpreted.
    look up "text interpretation html" in kbase for a full list.
    one option is to turn html passthrough on the server in question if this is a huge deal for you...if you want instructions on how to turn html passthrough on, they are located in the webelements user guide at
    http://diamond.businessobjects.com/node/255
    after doing so, you'd drop the database field into a formula and any html in the database field would be interpreted.

  • Is it possible to use a DateDiff formula within a single field?

    Post Author: EarthMover
    CA Forum: Formula
    I have a field that lists transaction times for the signing on and off of maintenance tickets.
    My problem is that since both the sign-on and the sign-off are in the same field, I don't have the
    option of using the DateDiff formula like I normally would ex: DateDiff ("Interval",startDatetime, endDateTime).
    Because the start-date and end-date are in the same field, the formula returns no value.  To combat this
    I believe that an IF/THEN/ELSE statement would work, if I made one for the start-date and one for the end-date.
    My transaction field is using a DateTime format ex: 10/28/2007  11:58:07.  I tried making the IF portion of the statement
    dependant on another field that tells me if they've signed off or on ex: ACDN or ACUP, both of these are examples of someone
    signing on to a ticket,  and signing off of a ticket results in: COMP.  Based on this information I believe it should be possible to create
    a conditional statement to return to the information I require. I've attached an example of what I see, at the bottom.
    I've only been using Crystal for a couple of weeks now, so I'm still learning, any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • Mail Merge from Numbers with long text fields

    I'm having trouble doing a Mail Merge that's reading fields from a Numbers spreadsheet. Everything is working as expected except for my one field that contains several sentences of text for each record. Nothing from that field gets transferred into the merged document and there is no error message (the courtesy of an error message would be much appreciated if I'm hitting some limit of the feature!).
    If I make fairly short text fields, it will merge successfully, but it would be tedious to go through my large text field and break each one into multiple shorter ones, and I haven't been able to figure out the limit on text length if there is one, so there would be a lot of trial and error. It doesn't seem to be by number of words, so perhaps it is by number of characters?
    I have tried cutting and pasting into a new table in Numbers, pasting as values in case there was any weird formatting at issue.
    I can't find anything to help me either fix this or at least know what the limitations are on Mail Merge. The only discussion I found here suggested either splitting the text fields or creating a new document, and those haven't worked for me.
    Thanks for any leads people can give me on this!

    Luckily I'm only merging a few dozen records, so I can go through by hand and pick out the odd spaces. But I'm open to any ideas for saving me that work, too!
    Numbers can do a character count, but unfortunately can't do that 'live' as you are entering characters into the entry box; only when the string has actually been entered into a cell.
    You can, however, make an estimate of the number of characters by entering them into a text frame of fixed width using a mono-spaced font. In the examples below, the font is Andale Mono 10pt, and the text boxes are 4.50 inches wide.
    The top example shows the result when exactly 254 characters from the first paragraph of your previous post are entered in the box. For this example, leaving off the two words that wrapped onto line six and including only the first five lines of text would leave a 'headroom' of nine (or ten, depending on whether the space after "but" was included) characters.
    To use: Enter your text into the text box using Andale Mono 10 pt. Select and Cut the first five lines. Click on the table cell to receive this chunk. Go Edit > Paste and Match Style to use the font set in the table, or simply Paste to use Andale Mono in this cell.
    Repeat until all text has been transferred.
    More below.
    You can also get the actual character count using the LEN() function. In the table on the left, each of the cells B3, B4 and B5 contain the formula
    =LEN(A)-254
    A3, A4 and A5 contain part or all of the text shown in the two text boxes. I've set the alignment of these cells to 'Align right' to show the end of each string.
    The Conditional formatting rules below are applied to cells B4 and B5. They set the background colour of the cell to 'amber' when the cell in column A is within 10 characters of the maximum and to red when the maximum is exceeded. The numbers in the cells show how many more characters may be added (negative numbers) or how many excess characters (positive numbers) are in the cell to the left.
    These check cells may be placed in a separate table, and the formula revised to include the table name of the data table.

  • Change the font color of a text field in a table by key-combination

    I want to change the font color of a text field in a table (single cell only) on pressing a key combination. Does anybody know how to do this.
    I have a lot of data in a table. During an evaluation of the data in a meeting I want to change the color of the text depending on the result of the meeting. (for example: High risk = CTRL+R makes the text red).
    I know how to change the color using a button, but I do not want to add a button after each cell. For this reason I would like to do it on a key combination that alway refers to the active cell.
    Many thanks for your help in advance.
    Marcel

    Hi,
    I don't think you can use the ctrl key like that as those shortcuts will be intercepted by Reader (ctrl-R toggles the ruler display on / off).  You also might have trouble updating the color while you still have focus on it.  You can use the shift key in a similar way, so if you only have lower case characters in the text fields then you can do something like;
    if (xfa.event.shift)
        switch (xfa.event.change)
            case "R":
                this.fontColor = "255,0,0";
                break;
            case "O":
                this.fontColor = "255,102,0";
                break;
            case "G":
                this.fontColor = "0,255,0";
                break;
        xfa.event.change = ""; // ignore character
    If you need uppercase characters maybe you can have one button to set "review mode" and test that on the if (xfa.event.shift) line.  But again it wont take effect until you have tabbed out of the field.

  • How to find the number of occurance of a string in text field of Infopath form?

    Hi All,
    In Infopath text field, How to find the number of occurrence of a particular string in that field?
    Thanks in advance!

    You can check to see if it contains a string once by using the contains function, but there isn't a very clean way to do what you want. If you wanted to guess at the maximum number of occurrences, then you could:
    Box A has your initial. Set Box B to do a concat of string-before and string-after of Box A where it copies Box A minus the string we're looking for. Then we have Box C that does the same thing to Box B. Repeat as many times as you see necessary.
    Example:
    String: "1"
    Box A - "123451234512345"
    Box B - "23451234512345"
    Box C - "2345234512345"
    Box D - "234523452345"
    etc.
    We then have a field that has nested ifs looking backwards from Z -> A looking for a non-blank. Based on that, we return the number of occurrences. Again, this isn't clean, but it will work if you think there's a predefinable maximum.

  • Adding user-defined number of text fields.

    Okay I am having problems, obviously. I am developing a program where the user will enter X and Y values and the program will calculate the relational data. However, I can't even get a start.
    First of all, the user defines the number of pairs of points they want to define. For example, they have 20 points, each with its own X and Y, so they click on 20 and then okay in the first window.
    The next window will then take their answer and display X and Y text fields for as many points as they defined. However, I can't figure out any way to do this.
    Feel free to run the program, the problem lies in the method setTextFields(). Help please!

  • How to autopopulate a text field with unique data from multiple data sets

    Hi,
    I'm a laboratory manager in charge of a hospital project which will be using pdf forms to send and receive data from our end users across the city. I need help with the last part of our pdf form, specifically with a js that will do a bit of text-field autopopulation magic. This, unfortunately, is a beyond what I have taught myself about pdf js functionality.a
    The problem:
    I need to provide my end users with a text field containing a set of data [A, B, C, D, E, F ...] and the total items in this set [tot#]. The end user needs this information as part of the implementation of this particular laboratory machine.
    The particulars
    When the end user asks for an experiment to be run, we must specify some pieces of data to help them interpret the results. These are constructed as panels which contain discrete data elements.
    For example - One experiment may use two panels, Panel#1 and Panel #2. Panel #1 includes the items A, B, D, E, Panel #2 includes the items A, B, C, F, G.
    Thus, the panels may share some of the same items, but, I only want the unique members to be displayed in the text field. If I make a drop down box or checkboxes with the panels, I want to  be able to select the panels that we ran and (in this example) have the text field display only the unique items among all the panels that were used:
    textfield outpute = A, B, C, D, E, F, G - 7 total.
    Any assistance from the pdf community would be very much appreciated.
    Thanks!

    Thanks for that help.
    I should have made it more apparent that I'm very new to scripting and I'm
    not a programmer by trade. I have a few questions before modifying the code
    you kindly provided.
    1) Where should I embed this script? Within the 'selection change' area of
    my listbox?
    2) Can I replace the term 'arr' with the names of the various items in my
    listbox or should I put 'arr#' as the output value for each term?
    3) Will this script find and display the unique values when a user selects
    multiple items in my listbox?
    4) How does the script know where to output the unique members of the
    combined set?
    I appreciate your patience with me.

  • Expanding text fields not co-operating

    I created a new form that spans over 2 pages and saved it as a dynamic PDF. I'm trying to allow for the text fields to expand as the user types beyond the intial size of the field. The field is set to "Expand to Fit". I have several sections of the form all separated by text headings. I have tried to wrap each section in a subform (set to "Flowed"), then wrap all the subforms to a larger subform (set to "Flowed").
    The problems that I'm encountering is each section that is wrapped in a subform looses the placement and whitespace between fields of all the fields and brings them in tight to each other. Then when i wrap all the subforms into one larger subform (set to "flowed"), my text headings and other text get rearranged and I can't change the order of reposition them with the white space.
    Below is a picture of my form in the nice tidy format that I'd like to keep. Then a picture of how it looks with each section in a subform and all of those subforms in a larger subform.
    Any help would be greatly appreciated!
    Before
    After

    Hi,
    Moving to Flowed layouts can be a pain. When you change to Flowed type, all of the objects are positioned from top left, based on the order in the hierarchy.
    You will need to adjust the objects margins in order to space them out.
    First I would adjust the content area on the Master Page, so that you have your margins in the right distance from the left (and top, bottom and right).
    See some examples here:
    Objects in flowed forms: http://assure.ly/e2jR0C
    Explore difference between flowed and positioned subforms: http://assure.ly/eSGQMt
    Some aspects for laying out objects: http://assure.ly/ewrLMo.
    Master pages and content areas: http://assure.ly/g0Wx7r.
    Another thing, when working with textfields (and other objects) you can set the caption to appear above the value area (go to the Layout palette). This means that you will only be dealing with one object instead of two (currently you have a text object and a textfield).
    If things are still out of order, then drag them into the correct order in the hierarchy and they will be in the right order on the page.
    Hope that helps,

  • Expanding text field to allow for multiple pages

    Hi all,
    Disclaimer: Not a JAVA/programmer type. I typically Google things to death and try to learn from there. Created a form and followed some other's suggestions but I'm in a bind with expanding a field (text field) to allow for users to enter info and for it to print the full entry once submitted.
    I changed the form to be sent using the email button to select recipients and as a pdf doc. I'd like to keep it this way. I created the form and didn't use a template. I just signed up and am looking for the button to attach the doc, created in Livecycle Designer ES with the hopes that someone could take a look at it. Can't find the attach button. If someone can provide their email address to take a look, that would be great.
    Niall, I've been reading your posts and actually tried copying/pasting in one of your fields (re: subform as Flow, etc) but so far, no luck.
    I selected all the usual variables for the subform/text box:
    Allow Multiple Lines, Allow Breaks, Expand to Fit (Height).
    Please advise if someone would be available to take a look and I'll send it to you. Thanks in advance for any recommendations/availability.

    Hi Jeff,
    Yes you can force the highlight colour on using the following script in the docReady event of the root node (normally form1):
    app.runtimeHighlight = true;
    You can also change the highlight colour, but this is a personal choice. Generally I would leave it at the default. This ways users are getting the same experience.
    For the email submit, there are a couple of choices. If you use a regular button (instead of the Email Submit Button) you can script for custom recipients, subject line and message. There are examples here. You are probably better sticking with the example for versions of Acrobat/Reader v9 and below. You are looking for the last button. The script can be reduced to match your requirements.

    If you want to share a form, you will need to upload it to a file sharing site, like Acrobat.com and then post the published link here.
    You can use a regular button for the URL, so that on the click event the user is directed to Adobe's site:
    app.launchURL("http://get.adobe.com/reader/", true);
    Lastly you must Reader Enable the form before you send it out.
    Good luck,
    Niall

  • My calculation "Total" box adds sum of all text fields whether they are visible or not, do I change

    I have check boxes that show and hide text fields. (Thanks to Gilads Java script). In options I have a default value for each text field.
    My "Total" Field field adds all fields even if they are not checked and visible. Need to have it only include them if they are checked and visible.

    You can't attach forms by email, or any other means, so it didn't come through.
    Since your fields have default values and aren't calculated based on the state of the corresponding check box, you will have to use a custom calculation script for the Total field that can check to see if any of the fields are hidden, and if so, don't include their values in the sum. For example:
    // Custom calculation script
    (function () {
        // Set up an array of field names to include in the total
        var aFields = ["text1", "text2", "text3", text4"];
        // Initialize variables
        var i, f, sum = 0;
        // Loop through the fields an calculate the sum
        for (i = 0; i < aFields.length; i += 1) {
            // Get the current field
            f = getField(aFields[i]);
            // Add the value of the current field to the sum if the field is visible
            if (f.display == display.visible) {
                sum += +f.value;
        // Set this field value to the sum
        event.value = sum;

  • How can i redirect 5 choice options from a drop down list into 5 separate text fields?

    I have a number of drop down lists which push one of 5 choices to a text field on another page.
    I want to be able to push each choice from one drop down field to a separate field, so that it is not possible to duplicate the drop down choice.
    The resulting page is going to be locked.
    What script do I need to use to send each of the five choices specifically to five separate text fields?
    Thanks for the insight.

    Hi Paul,
    I've had a look at the sample script you posted. I'm not sure how to make it work with the form I'm creating. (I sent it to you earlier.) Would you mind setting one of the fields up on my form so that I can get an idea of how to then push the choices set up on the "visible on screen only" to the textfields which are locked on the visible page? Do i lock the fields in the same way?
    Will I need to create a new script for each of the arrays I'll be creating? for example, myScript1, myScript2, my Script3....
    Why do i need a reset button?
    Nellie
