Exception in thread main with package name

I've got this problem: my program works fine when I haven't the line for the package name. When I put it, it compiles fine, but when executing it says "Exception in thread main" and a lot of other information from classes it can't find. I've got the '.' in my classpath, I've tried to move the directory to the root, and to execute it I do not use '.class'.
Can anyone help me?

This is a minimal explanation of packages.
Assume that your programs are part of a package named myapp, which is specified by
this first line in each source file: package myapp;
Also assume that directory (C:\java\work\) is listed in the CLASSPATH list of directories.
Also assume that all your source files reside in this directory structure: C:\java\work\myapp\
Then a statement to compile your source file named aProgram.java is:
C:\java\work\>javac myapp\aProgram.java
Explanation:
Compiling
A class is in a package if there is a package statement at the top of the class.
The source file needs to be in a subdirectory structure. The subdirectory structure must match the package statement. The top subdirectory must be in the classpath directory.
So, you generate a directory structure C:\java\work\myapp\ which is the [classpath directory + the package subdirectory structure], and place aProgram.java in it.
Then from the classpath directory (C:\java\work\) use the command: javac myapp\aProgram.java
Running
Compiling creates a file, aProgram.class in the myapp directory.
(The following is where people tend to get lost.)
The correct name now, as far as java is concerned, is the combination of package name and class name: myapp.aProgram (note I omit the .class) If you don't use this name, java will complain that it can't find the class.
To run a class that's NOT part of a package, you use the command: java SomeFile (assuming that SomeFile.class is in a directory that's listed in the classpath)
To run a class that IS part of a package, you use the command java myapp.aProgram (Note that this is analogous to the command for a class not in a package, you just use the fully qualified name)

  • HELP Needed with this error:   Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NoClass

    Folks,
    I am having a problem connecting to my MSDE SQL 2000 DB on a WindowsXP pro. environment. I am learning Java and writing a small test prgm to connect the the database. The code compiles ok, but when I try to execute it i keep getting this error:
    "Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: Test1"
    I am using the Microsoft jdbc driver and my CLASSPATH is setup correctly, I've also noticed that several people have complained about this error, but have not seen any solutions....can someone help ?
    Here is the one of the test programs that I am using:
    import java.sql.*;
    * Microsoft SQL Server JDBC test program
    public class Test1 {
    public Test1() throws Exception {
    // Get connection
    DriverManager.registerDriver(new
    com.microsoft.jdbc.sqlserver.SQLServerDriver());
    Connection connection = DriverManager.getConnection(
    "jdbc:microsoft:sqlserver://LAPTOP01:1433","sa","sqladmin");
    if (connection != null) {
    System.out.println();
    System.out.println("Successfully connected");
    System.out.println();
    // Meta data
    DatabaseMetaData meta = connection.getMetaData();
    System.out.println("\nDriver Information");
    System.out.println("Driver Name: "
    + meta.getDriverName());
    System.out.println("Driver Version: "
    + meta.getDriverVersion());
    System.out.println("\nDatabase Information ");
    System.out.println("Database Name: "
    + meta.getDatabaseProductName());
    System.out.println("Database Version: "+
    meta.getDatabaseProductVersion());
    } // Test
    public static void main (String args[]) throws Exception {
    Test1 test = new Test1();

    I want to say that there was nothing wrong
    with my classpath config., I am still not sure why
    that didn't work, there is what I did to resolved
    this issue.You can say that all you like but if you are getting NoClassDefFound errors, that's because the class associated with the error is not in your classpath.
    (For future reference: you will find it easier to solve problems if you assume that the problem is your fault, instead of trying to blame something else. It almost always is your fault -- at least that's been my experience.)
    1. I had to set my DB connection protocol to TCP/IP
    (this was not the default), this was done by running
    the
    file "svrnetcn.exe" and then in the SQL Server Network
    Utility window, enable TCP/IP and set the port to
    1433.Irrelevant to the classpath problem.
    2. I then copied all three of the Microsoft JDBC
    driver files to the ..\jre\lib\ext dir of my jdk
    installed dir.The classpath always includes all jar files in this directory. That's why doing that fixed your problem. My bet is that you didn't have the jar file containing the driver in your classpath before, you just had the directory containing that jar file.
    3. Updated my OS path to located these files
    and....BINGO! (that simple)Unnecessary for solving classpath problems.
    4. Took a crash course on JDBC & basic Java and now I
    have created my database, all tables, scripts,
    stored procedures and can read/write and do all kinds
    of neat stuff.All's well that ends well. After a few months you'll wonder what all the fuss was about.

    What method does it say that it can't find?
    You might just need to make sure that your compilation of all files is up to date. If you remove a method from one file and recompile only that file, and then you try to call the old method from a file that hasn't been recompiled, you will get that error. If you had tried to recompile the second file, it wouldn't have compiled, because of the removed method.

    And I have a java file that I have created with JDeveloper 12c:
        import java.sql.Connection;
        import java.sql.DriverManager;
        import java.sql.ResultSet;
        import java.sql.SQLException;
        public class Class1 {
             * @param args
            public static void main(String[] args) throws SQLException {
                Connection conn = null;
                try {
                    Class.forName("oracle.jdbc.driver.OracleDriver");
                    //Izveidojam savienojumu
                    conn = DriverManager.getConnection("jdbc.oracle.thin:@localhost:1521", "SYSTEM", "asdasd");
                    // Izveidojam callable statement
                    CallableStatement stmt = conn.prepareCall("CALL Store_a.apskatit()");
                    ResultSet resul = stmt.executeQuery();
                    while (resul.next()) {
                        System.out.println(resul.getInt(1) + "\t" + resul.getString(2));
                } catch (ClassNotFoundException e) {
                    e.printStackTrace();
                } finally {
                    try {
                        conn.close();
                    } catch (SQLException e) {
                        e.printStackTrace();
    When I try to run the java file, I get this error "Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NullPointerException at client.Class1.main(Class1.java:29).
    So the line I get error in is "conn.close();"
    How to fix this?
    Thank you very much in advance.

    I am trying to call a java stored procedure in java application. I am using ORACLE database and JDeveloper.
    I am getting error "Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NullPointerException. I have no idea what have I been doing wrong.
    Maybe you haven't read it yet but I told you in your other thread what you were doing wrong and, step by step, how to address the problem.
    https://forums.oracle.com/thread/2611124
    I'm not going to repeat everything again just this one main piece of advice:
    Until you get you code working outside the database don't even bother trying to load it into the DB and create a Java stored procedure.
    You are trying to deal with too many different issues at the same time. Unless you solve your primary Java problem by fixing the code outside the DB you will have nothing but problems loading it into the DB.
    And just get rid of this line of code - you don't need it anymore and it hasn't been done like that for many years now:
    Class.forName("oracle.jdbc.driver.OracleDriver");

    The class the error message is referring to is defined with a SWC that my project links to. However, I've even tried to define a class with that same name (and location) within my project and it still fails to find it.
    Why am I able to Project->Clean and run this project within the desktop AIR player (or on the device in debug mode) but unable to export it as a release build?
    I have found a couple of threads mentioning a similar error but none of them have been marked as resolved.

    At this point I feel I am talking to myself, but I will share my work-around in case it helps another who may stumble across this post.
    In my particular case, both my main AIR application and my ANE wrapper library were referencing the same external Flex library (same revision). Both projects had the library linkage set to merge. Changing the linkage to "External" on one of the 2 libraries (it doesn't seem to matter which) and leaving the other as "Merged into code" enabled the export to complete without the bizarre "Unable to find named traits" error.

    Thanks, - Dave

    You can verify the settings of the path to your libraries with
    System.out.println(System.getProperty("java.library.path"));before you call System.loadLibrary(), so you know if it is correct.
    I also found this information (for Solaris):
    The shared library file name requires a "lib" prefix and a ".so" extension. Do not include the "lib" prefix or the ".so" extension for the argument that you pass to the System.loadLibrary method.
    I don't know if that helps you solving your problem.

            return(0);
            else
            return(size-1);
        private void resize(int newsize){
            Point2d[] newpointList = new Point2d[newsize]; // Create a new array
        public int[] get(int index){
            if(index>size)
                      throw new ArrayIndexOutOfBoundsException(index);
            else
                int[] point = new int[2];
                point[0] = (int)pointList[index-1].x;
                point[1] = (int)pointList[index-1].y;
                return(point);
    public static void main(String args[]){
        pointList plist = new pointList();
        plist.add(10, 10);
    }

    An Object-array (or in your case an array of Point2D) is just an array of references in Java.
    With "new Point2D[10]" you've created an array capable of holding 10 references to Point2D objects, but you've not yet created an Point2D object (each of those references is null). You'll need to create such a Point2D object in your add() method (before you try to call setX() and setY() on it).
    Two additional hints:
    * Your class should really be called PointList, because class names should start with a upper-case letter in Java
    * your resize method doesn't keep the old values, but simply creates a new (empty) array.

    I'm having difficulty setting up my system to cope with simple demo codes. Error Message at end
    System: Sony Vaio Laptop
    OS: Vista
    Java Components
    JAF-1.1.1
    JDK-1.6.0_03
    JRE-1.6.0_03
    JAVAMAIL-1.4.1
    I've edited my PATH to include contents of "JDK-1.6.0_03" so java, javac etc work from any directory
    I've edited my CLASSPATH so that from commandprompt I get the following message (using Set CLASSPATH)
    CLASSPATH=.;c:\java\;C:\Program Files\Java\javamail-1.4.1\mail.jar;C:\Program Files\Java\jaf-1.1.1\activation.jar;
    C:\Java\ is my working directory for all my codes, other directories are correct(copy and pasted)
    the following is the FrameDemo Code I'm trying to use, it appears to compile perfectly well

    I'd be very grateful for any help.....
    I'm guessing I'm missing something from the CLASSPATH but I've no clue what it is
    FrameDemo code is taken from Sun's own Swing Tutorial so I'm pretty sure the code is fine

    ok NOW IT GETS WORSE!
    currently I have FrameDemo,java and FrameDemo.class in c:\java
    I create C:\Java\components
    then java components.FrameDemo from c:\java
    produces
    Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: components/FrameDemo
    if I put FrameDemo.java into the components directory and then compile it
    I get FrameDemo.class AND FrameDemo$1.class
    and when I then java components.FrameDemo from c:\java
    it works....
    when I remove the first line of code from my original FrameDemo.Java
    and then recompile it....I get FrameDemo.class AND FrameDemo$1.class in c:\Java
    Java FrameDemo
    works perfectly
    the line
    package components;was screwing me over
    I'm a little confused why I need FrameDemo$1.class though.....
    Cheers for all the responses
