Execute UCM Service in custom component

Hi ,
I was looking for information how to execute the UCM service in custom component and found a couple of blogs regarding the same :
http://jonathanhult.com/blog/2012/06/execute-a-service-from-a-java-filter/
http://jonathanhult.com/blog/2012/10/who-created-that-site-studio-section/
http://www.redstonecontentsolutions.com/5/post/2012/05/executing-a-service-from-aservicehandler.html#sthash.X31M6ZCS.tvlE83Km.dpbs
I am new to webcenter content and couldn't understand above blog stuff properly. Queries :
1. We may need to call the UCM service in filter, Service or ServiceHandler. Is there any difference in code required to execute a service ?
2. What is the correct code to execute the UCM service ?

Ad 1) the reason why the same service might be executed slightly differently from e.g. a filter or another service/service handler is that classes Service, ServiceHandler, and the interface FilterImplementor provide slightly different attributes. Note that you may also execute a service from iDocScript (via the executeService command - see http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E23943_01/doc.1111/e10726/c08_config_ref.htm#i1078100)
Ad 2) There is no 'correct' or 'incorrect' way/ Simply, from a filter you will do it this way, and from a service that way. I think you should ask, what is the correct way to implement my custom service - should it be a filter? Or rather a service handler? Will I need Java, or is iDocScript enough? Unfortunately, you have not shared anything about what your component should do.

  • Error when calling bpm service from custom component

    Hi all,
    I have built a custom component in order to fetch task related data by calling a bpm service inside the method of my custom service.
    This is the error trace i got in audit info.
    "not loading page MSG_PAGE because it is up to date with timestamp 1324331008000
    Script stack dump (user: abc, request: IdcService=CUSTOM_SERVICE&dDocName=ABC018005)
    No resource include or function stack for error. "
    What does this error signify?
    In the service definition of my custom service, I am using MSG_PAGE as my template. Is it related to this why i am facing the error? how do i get to know for a particular  functionality i should use a particular template?
    Please provide your inputs asap.
    Thanks in advance.

    HI jiri,
    Please have a look at the stacktrace and provide me a solution as in how to overcome the error.
    I had included Report.trace in order to check the flow of the program and found that the problem arises when i establish the connection.

  • Adding a Custom Component to Check-In Operation

    Hi everyone,
    Our technical knowledge is very basic in UCM and ECM.
    We are trying to add a JSP component which must have some interaction with the user just before a Check-in operation which should be consumed in the client's web browser.
    Can anyone please point me in the right directions for creating such a schema. We are learning stuff such as Custom Components, Component Wizard, presentation of UCM data through JSON, JSP components, Dynamic Server Pages. We have found the product amazing so far just like every other Fusion Middleware product.
    But still it is too early for us to decide what we should go with. Any info would be so much appreciated. I thought we could try a trigger before a Check-in operation through Content Profile, which would open a custom JSP added to UCM as a custom component. But it is very in-mature as you can point out.
    Thanks.

    What's the flow here?
    Do you want to pop-up a JSP in a window to prompt the user for extra information before submitting the check-in form? If so, you need a custom component to override the resource that draws the "submit" button on the form.
    Or, do you want to execute something like a web service during the check-in process? If so, do a validateStandard filter. See the 'DynamicPrefix' comonent in the howtocomponents:
    http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/middleware/content-management/index-092832.html

  • How to execute a service from a filter in custom component

    I want to execute a service from my filter.
    Then get a resultset from service.
    How do I do it?

    You have to look at Bex book - you will find exactly what you need. You can also could search the forum, i think this was discussed in some threads.

  • How a custom component is called when we install a custom component in UCM.

    How a custom component is called when we install a custom component in UCM.
    On what event the component services will be activated and called.
    Suppose i create a Custom service name MULTIPLECHECKIN then this service will be called on what event and where it will be defined to call.

    Saurabh,
    the code is packed in the component (see component\Security Filter\java\Security Filter\ModifyAttributesFilter.java - the first Security Filter is the component name, the other Security Filter is the Java package name).
    What is important:
    - your class must implement the FilterImplementor interface (you will need UCM standard classes - server.zip in your classpath) and its doFilter method
    How the filter is executed?
    - actually, in this case you don't need any new service - you can use the standard 'hook', which is provided by standard checkin services
    - in Component Wizard create a new component, add your compiled class to it (make sure you follow the rules not to end up in classpath issues)
    - in Component Wizard click the 'Java Code' tab. Here you can add a Custom filter called validateCheckinData, which is executed by standard checkin services. If you parametrize the filter to call your class created above, you are done.
    'Working with Content Components' manual (e.g. here: http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E10316_01/cs/cs_doc_10/documentation/developer/using_components_10en.pdf) can give you a basic picture. A better resource is Bex Huff's book - I would recommend you to get it, because it has a step-by-step HelloWorld example which can guide you through Component Wizard. I could also send you my own component (send me an email at [email protected]) which implements a filter for user quotas, so you just need to "replace classes".
    As for the other half of your task, searching for the file in the database server will work only if you use database as your storage (ie. install and configure File Store Provider component accordingly). Of course, you could do a search for file in this case - just consider that you will be comparing two BLOBs rather than two relatively short check-sums (most likely strings or arrays of bytes). Besides, it will not work if you use filesystem as your storage.

  • Custom component  - how to store java Properties object in ucm environment

    Hi Experts,
    I am developing a custom component.
    my custom component code is reading a properties file and load in Properties object. Everytime this custom Service is called, properties file is read from file system and new Properties Object is created.
    Is there any way to load the Properties object once and store somewhere in UCM context ? (just like we do in JSP using application object"
    thanks!!
    Edited by: user4884609 on Jul 12, 2010 3:01 PM

    I'd say there are quite a few ways how to do it, but many of them have nothing in common with UCM.
    - I'd opt for the only "UCM" way I' aware of: as a part of custom component you can create your own properties file (it's also called environment variables) as a part of your custom component. You can, then, easily read (and write?) properties from/to the file.
    - The first option could have disadvantage, if there are too many properties. In this case you could use Java serialization - it should be UCM independent
    - Another option is to create your properties in the database - it is a bit similar to the first option, but it's more robust. Plus, you may use features of the database if you want to have some additional logic in you properties.
    - Note that you can also create a static object, which could be initialized e.g during class load

  • Cannot execute custom component.:Method not found error

    Hi,
    I have created a custom component. When i execute the component i am getting error message :"Unable to execute service ABC and function XYZ." The service method XYZ is not defined.
    intradoc.data.DataException: !csMethodNotDefined,XYZ
    Where else i have to define my method in component wizard?
    Please provide inputs
    Thanks in advance

    If you haven't done it yet, get a copy of the Bex's book http://www.amazon.com/Definitive-Stellent-Content-Server-Development/dp/1590596846
    The chapter 10 will explain how a service, and its methods are bound to Java package whose classes extend the standard interfaces.

  • Stellent  UCM :: calling javascript inside the custom component

    Hi Experts,
    I am new to the stellent content server (Oracle content server). Currently we are working on the project which needs to be integrated with the content server for the content selection. I did some prototype to pass back the selection value to the parent window using the javascript window.opener.<parent java script> from a dummy page. Now i am customizing the content server custom component. Unfortunately i cannot be able to call back the parent javascript from the custom component. Seems the window.opener is null.
    I have tried with windowUtils.getOpener() method which is available in the content server weblayout. Still i could not be able to call back.
    Guys i am looking forward your idea ? If anyone knows the way to resolve this issue or any other best suitable way to handle this please ping me back.

  • [Best practice] How to call a service from custom Java code

    Hi all,
    I'm wondering what the best method is to call a standard service from custom Java code?
    In a specific situation iDoc script is extended with custom functions with a custom component. There's Java code mapping to these functions that is executing these functions. The iDoc script functions are called from a workflow entry script.
    In the Java code that runs when the custom iDoc functions are called, I want to call a standard Content Server service. I don't think that the m_service variable is available, so filling the binder and using m_service.executeService() probably isn't possible.
    Also, if it were possible (that is, if I want to call a standard service from my own custom service Java code), what would then be the best method to do so?
    Regards, Stijn

    Hi Sapan,
    Let me explain a bit further.
    I'm an UCM consultant trying to solve a problem that occured at a client when they installed the CS10gR35CoreUpdateBundle.
    Content items are entered into a Workflow when they are checked in. Part of one of the entry scripts of the a workflow step is that related content to the content item in the workflow is (re)submitted for conversion.
    To achive this, a custom component provides an iDoc script extension. This iDoc function (resubmitForConversion) is implemented in Java (the class extends ScriptExtensionsAdaptor).
    In this Java method, first the related content items are fetched. Then the service RESUBMIT_FOR_CONVERSION should be called for all dID's in of the related content.
    Thus, at a certain point in the custom Java code, a native Content Server service must be called. Of course the class of this Java code does not extend the Service class, so the m_service object isn't available.
    The thing is: before installed the 10gR35CoreUpdateBundle everything worked OK. This code was used to execute the service:
            Workspace workspace = CommonUtils.getSystemWorkspace();
            String cmd = binder.getLocal("IdcService");
            if (cmd == null) throw new DataException("!csIdcServiceMissing");
            ServiceData serviceData = ServiceManager.getFullService(cmd);
            if (serviceData == null) throw new DataException(LocaleUtils.encodeMessage("!csNoServiceDefined", null, cmd));
            Service service = ServiceManager.createService(serviceData.m_classID, workspace, null, binder, serviceData);
            UserData fullUserData = CommonUtils.getFullUserData(userName, service);
            service.setUserData(fullUserData);
            binder.m_environment.put("REMOTE_USER", userName);
            ServiceException error = null;
            try {
                service.setSendFlags(true, true);
                service.initDelegatedObjects();
                service.globalSecurityCheck();
                service.preActions();
                service.doActions();
                service.postActions();
                service.updateSubjectInformation(true);
                service.updateTopicInformation(binder);
            } catch (ServiceException e) {
                error = e;
            } finally {
                service.cleanUp(true);
                if (!CommonUtils.isWorkspaceConnectionInTransaction(workspace)) {
                     workspace.releaseConnection();
            }the first problem was that the CS began to complain that a transaction was started within another transaction. So I suspect that the 10gR35 update wrapped a transaction around a workflow script entry.
    With some decompiling I figured out how a service is called from iDoc with the <$executeService()$> command. So I replaced the code above with:
                  String cmd = binder.getLocal("IdcService");
                ServiceData serviceData = ServiceManager.getFullService(cmd);
                if (serviceData == null) throw new DataException(LocaleUtils.encodeMessage("!csNoServiceDefined", null, cmd));
                Workspace workspace = CommonUtils.getSystemWorkspace();
                Service service = ServiceManager.createService(serviceData.m_classID, workspace, null, binder, serviceData);
                UserData fullUserData = CommonUtils.getFullUserData(userName, service);
                service.setUserData(fullUserData);
                binder.m_environment.put("REMOTE_USER", userName);
                service.initDelegatedObjects();
                service.executeSafeServiceInNewContext(cmd, true);This solved the transaction problem but introduces another problem: !csUnableToResubmitItem,(null)!csIllegalScriptAccess,RESUBMIT_FOR_CONVERSION
    The Service Reference Guide says that the access level for RESUBMIT_FOR_CONVERION is 33 (Read, Scriptable). However, in shared/config/resources/std_services.htm the access level is specified as 2 (write).
    Thus, my question still is:
    What is the best method to call a standard Content Server service from any Java code (so without extending the Service class, or having the m_service object available)?

  • Showing Error MEssage using Custom Component

    Hi,
    I have built the custom component to validate the File Size and File Extension.
    I.e user should be able to check in the document if size is less than 5MB and file extension is one of "Pdf", "doc", "tiff", "png".
    Here whenever the validation files i am throwing the exception "File Size Exeeds the Limit or Invalid file Type".
    I am able to get the custom component working as per the validation. And it is alsi logging the error in the Log file.
    But i need to show the error message when the user cllick on the check in button in UCM page.
    As of now it shows some generic error saying "Unable to execute service CHECKIN_NEW_SUB and function validateStandard.
    The error was caused by an internally generated issue. The error has been logged"
    Any help on this is highly appreciated.
    Regards,
    Rakshitha Shetty.

    Hi,
    You could throw a ServiceException in your filter with the message you want to display.

  • Best practice question for implementing a custom component

    I'm implementing a custom component which renders multiple <input type="text" .../> controls as part of it. The examples I've seen that do something similar use the ResponseWriter to generate the markup "by hand" like:
         writer.startElement("input", component);
         writer.writeAttribute("type", "text", null);
         writer.writeAttribute("id", "foo", null);
         writer.writeAttribute("name", "foo", null);
         writer.writeAttribute("value", "hello", null);
         writer.writeAttribute("size", "20", null);
         writer.endElement("input");
    I don't know about anyone else, but I HATE having to write code that manufactures this stuff - seems to me that there are already classes that do this, so why not just use those? For example, the above could be replaced with:
         HtmlInputText textField = new HtmlInputText();
         textField.setId("foo");
         textField.setValue("hello");
         textField.setSize(20);
         // just to be safe, invoke both encodeBegin() and encodeEnd(),
         // though it seems like encodeEnd() actually does the work in this case,
         // but who knows if they might change it at some point
         textField.encodeBegin(context);
         textField.encodeEnd(context);
    So my question is, why does everyone seem to favor the former over the latter? Why not leverage objects that already do the (encoding) work for you?

    Got it!
    You JSP should have this:
    <h:panelGroup styleClass="jspPanel" id="jspPanel1"></h:panelGroup>
    And your code page ValueChangeListener/ActionListner should have this:
              if (findComponent(getForm1(),"myOutputText") == null)
                   FacesContext facesCtx = FacesContext.getCurrentInstance();
                   System.out.println("Adding component");
                   HtmlOutputText output =
                        (HtmlOutputText) facesCtx.getApplication().createComponent(
                             HtmlOutputText.COMPONENT_TYPE);
                   output.setId("myOutputText");
                   output.setValue("It works");
                   getJspPanel1().getChildren().add(output);
                   System.out.println("Done");
                   DebugUtil.printTree(FacesContext.getCurrentInstance().getViewRoot(),System.out);
              else
                   System.out.println("component already added");
    I just have to figure out this IOException on the closed stream - probably has to do with [immidiate="true"].
    Thanks.
