Execution of $ORACLE_HOME/root.sh

Hi There,
We are installing SAP portal on Oracle and solaris. I had a doubt for execution of $ORACLE_HOME/root.sh as root user.
Do we need to execute $ORACLE_HOME/root.sh as root user only(what is process if root user access not provided to us) or can we use other user with root privilages. Please provide your valueble inputs ASAP.
Regards,

If you look into the script root.sh, you will see a hard-coded check for user root.
So the answer will be:
No, you cannot use other user.
Edit this script at your own risk ....

    Do anyone have any idea what going on and how can I fix it ?

    Hi,
    solaris has several issues with DISM, e.g.:
    Solaris 10 and Solaris 11 Shared Memory Locking May Fail (Doc ID 1590151.1)
    Sounds like Solaris Cluster  has a similar bug. A "workaround" is to reboot the (cluster) zone, that "fixes" the mlock error. This bug was introduced with updates in september, atleast to our environment (Solaris 11.1). Prior i did not have the issue and now i have to restart the entire zone, whenever i stop crs.
    With 11.2.0.3 the root.sh script can be rerun without prior cleaning up, so you should be able to continue installation at that point after the reboot. After the root.sh completes some configuration assistants need to be run, to complete the installation. You need to execute this manually as you wipe your oui session
    Kind Regards
    Thomas

  • Root.sh failed at second node OUL 6.3 Oracle GRID 11.2.0.3

    Hi, im installing a two node cluster mounted on Oracle Linux 6.3 with Oracle DB 11.2.0.3, the installation went smooth up until the execution of the root.sh script on the second node.
    THe script return this final lines:
    CRS-4402: The CSS daemon was started in exclusive mode but found an active CSS daemon on node nodo1, number 1, and is terminating
    An active cluster was found during exclusive startup, restarting to join the cluster
    Start of resource "ora.crsd" failed
    CRS-2800: Cannot start resource 'ora.asm' as it is already in the INTERMEDIATE state on server 'nodo2'

    In $GRID_HOME/log/node2/alertnode.log It appears to be a Cluster Time Synchronization Service issue, (i didn't synchronyze the nodes..) however the CTSS is running in observer mode, wich i believe it shouldn't affect the installation process. After that i lost it...there's an entry CRS-5018 indicating that an unused HAIP route was removed... and then, out of the blue: CRS-5818:Aborted command 'start' for resource 'ora.asm'. Some clarification will be deeply apreciated.

  • ORA-12154 as oracle user, whit the root account it works fine

    Hello there,
    I've a problem with a client installation if I try to connect to the database. I've the following configuration:
    1. Database: Running on a Ubuntu Jeos VM, Oracle 11g (Release 11.1.0.6.0 64 bit)
    2. Client: Running on a CentOS 5.2 VM, Oracle Client 10g Linux 32bit
    I've configured the tnsnames.ora and stored it in the $ORACLE_HOME/network/admin directory. The content of the tnsnames.ora file is the following:
    ORCL64=(DESCRIPTION=(ADDRESS_LIST=(ADDRESS=(PROTOCOL=tcp)(HOST=192.168.12.128)(PORT=1521)))(CONNECT_DATA=(SID=orcl)))
    If I try to connect to the database as the oracle user with the following command sqlplus SYS@ORCL64 AS SYSDBA, I'll get the ORA-12154  TNS:could not resolve the connect identifier specified error message. If I try the same as the root user it works fine and I can establish the connection. The same result I've got if I try the command tnsping ORCL64. As the root user the tnsnames adapter can resolve the alias, as the oracle user this is'nt possible and I'll get the error message: TNS-03505: Failed to resolve name. In both he uses the paramter file /u01/app/oracle/network/admin/sqlnet.ora. The content of the sqlnet.ora file is the following:
    NAMES.DIRECTORY_PATH= (TNSNAMES, EZCONNECT).
    Have you any suggestions how can I resolve this problem to get a connection with the oracle user.
    Thank you in advance
    Sven

    Hello,
    thanks for your answers. On the CentOS maschine, where the client is installed, there are no directory's $ORACLE_HOME/bin/oracle and $ORACLE_HOME/bin/lsnrctl. The output from the $ORACLE_HOME/network/admin/*ora is:
    -rw-r----- 1 oracle oinstall 171 28. Apr 21:25 /u01/app/oracle/network/admin/sqlnet.ora
    wx---- 1 root root 118 5. Mai 11:33 /u01/app/oracle/network/admin/tnsnames.ora
    The post-install script $ORACLE_HOME/root.sh I've started.
    On the Ubuntu Jeos VM, where the database is installed, the output from the 3 directories are:
    ls -l $ORACLE_HOME/bin/oracle
    -rwsr-s--x 1 oracle oinstall 188459338 2009-02-23 09:21 /u01/app/oracle/product/11.1.0/db_1/bin/oracle
    ls -l $ORACLE_HOME/bin/lsnrctl

  • OCR Root Directory?

    I would like to setup an action in Adobe Pro X that will OCR all files contained in a root directory and its subfolders. I change the "Start with" dialog to "A Folder on My Computer."   A dialog pops up and lets me browse to the network drive.  I select the drive and click ok.
    I setup the OCR and other settings.
    But when I run the action, it doesn't do anything.
    If I instead setup the action by browsing to a specific folder on the network, the OCR runs correctly and OCR's all files, including the subfolders in the selected folder.
    Is there a way to tell it to OCR everything in the folders and subfolders on the root network drive?

    For anyone else having this problem after running root.sh as root and who isn't getting it resolved after trying the above suggestion, you should check wether SELinux is enabled and preventing the memory relocation of shared libraries.
    Check wether SELinux is enabled :
    +/usr/sbin/selinuxenabled && echo SELINUX ENABLED+
    Check wether you can load the libclntsh shared library by trying to start sqlplus ... $ORACLE_HOME/bin/sqlplus
    An errormessage along these lines is a good indication SELinux is getting in your way:
    sqlplus: error while loading shared libraries: /u01/app/11.2.0/grid/lib/libclntsh.so.11.1: cannot restore segment prot after reloc: Permission denied
    (You should also see these errors in the logfile $ORACLE_HOME/cfgtoollogs/crsconfig/rootcrs_$HOSTNAME.log )
    To resolve, deconfigure the Oracle clusterware stack, change the SELinux security context of the shared library and re-run root.sh. Everything as the root user:
    su - root
    +$ORACLE_HOME/crs/install/rootcrs.pl -verbose -deconfig -force+
    chcon -t textrel_shlib_t /u01/app/11.2.0/grid/lib/libclntsh.so.11.1
    +$ORACLE_HOME/root.sh+
    Good luck.

  • Oracle 8.1.7 installation on Mandrake 9.2 Linux

    Hello Oracle Linux experts,
    I've got problem with installation of Oracle 8.1.7 on Mandrake 9.2 linux... I know that Mandrake not certified for running Oracle 8i - but may be someone could help ? I managed to install it successfully on 8.x and 9.0 versions
    of Mandrake - but 9.2 (currently installed one giving me problems). I could finish the installation - but unfortunately not all oracle modules (including oracle binary) built successfully. And I've got some errors on a linking stage (even if I run setup_stubs.sh - and according to log file generated by this script all modules have been rebuild) Any suggestions ? Am I missing something ? This are the steps that I was using for Mandrake 9.0 and now I am trying the same ones on 9.2:
    ---cut---
    This is what I've done:
    1. Create oracle installation account (in my case 'ora817' and use 'dba' as primary group) As shell for this account I used 'bash'
    2. Create all required directory structure for Oracle installation i.e.
    ORACLE_BASE=/apps/ora_817
    ORACLE_HOME=${ORACLE_BASE}/product/8.1.7
    3. In home directory of ora817 use create / update file .bash_profile:
    ---.bash_profile---
    # .bash_profile
    # Get the aliases and functions
    if [ -f ~/.bashrc ]; then
    . ~/.bashrc
    fi
    # User specific environment and startup programs
    # PATH=$PATH:$HOME/bin
    # export PATH
    # unset USERNAME
    JAVA_HOME=/usr/local/java; export JAVA_HOME
    ORACLE_BASE=/apps/ora_817; export ORACLE_BASE
    ORACLE_HOME=${ORACLE_BASE}/product/8.1.7; export ORACLE_HOME
    PATH=${PATH}:${ORACLE_HOME}/bin; export PATH
    if [${LD_LIBRARY_PATH} == ""]
    then
    LD_LIBRARY_PATH=${ORACLE_HOME}/lib:/usr/lib:/usr/local/lib
    else
    LD_LIBRARY_PATH=${ORACLE_HOME}/lib:${LD_LIBRARY_PATH}
    fi
    export LD_LIBRARY_PATH
    export LD_ASSUME_KERNEL=2.2.5
    umask 002
    unset LANG
    unset LANGUAGE
    ---.bash_profile---
    4. Update / create .bashrc file in the same directory:
    ---.bashrc---
    # .bashrc
    # User specific aliases and functions
    # Source global definitions
    if [ -f /etc/bashrc ]; then
    . /etc/bashrc
    fi
    unset LANG
    unset LANGUAGE
    unset LC_MONETARY
    unset LC_NUMERIC
    unset LC_MESSAGES
    unset LC_COLLATE
    unset LC_CTYPE
    unset LC_TIME
    unset NLS_LANG
    ---.bashrc---
    Then you would have to logout and login back so that changes take place and that's it - your Oracle Universal Installer will start !!!
    Few other notes:
    Before installation you would have to make sure that you got Java JDK-1.1.8 - file should be called:
    jdk118_v3-glibc-2.1.3.tar.bz2
    You could find it on the net.
    During installation there will be step when you would have to run file $ORACLE_HOME/root.sh - make sure that you edit this file before execution:
    Line 102:
    RMF=/bin/rm -f
    is changed into
    RMF="/bin/rm -f"
    and line 156
    RUID=`/usr/bin/id|$AWK -F\( '{print $2}'|$AWK -F\) '{print $1}`
    is changed into
    RUID=`/bin/id|$AWK -F\( '{print $2}'|$AWK -F\) '{print $1}'`
    Please note that id command in Mandrake 9.0 linux located in /bin directory and not in /usr/bin !
    Also path for 'sed' module should be changed from /usr/local/bin to just /bin
    After installation I suggest to unset LD_ASSUME_KERNEL
    env variable and install and run glibc-2.1.3-stubs.tar.gz package that will relink modules for use with newer version of glibc. Copy this package to $ORACLE_HOME directory, untar it - i.e.
    tar -xvzf ./glibc-2.1.3-stubs.tar.gzand then run ./setup_stubs.sh script. (make sure that you do so by the same user that was used during oracle installation)
    This file you could get from oracle OTN web site.
    ---cut---
    Regards,
    Alex

    Just some additional information - I think that I found the problem - but no solution so far:
    When I am trying to rebuild (relink) oracle (using relink script from $ORACLE_HOME/bin - it worked for all other options apart from 'oracle' and as a result oracle binary in
    $ORACLE_HOME/bin is missing....) this is kind of error that I've got:
    ---cut---

  • Open-vm-tools/official vmware tools not installing.

    I'm trying to install the latest offical vmware tools (16/9/2013) and open-vm-tools but both seem to always fail. I tried some of the patches listed on the wiki, but nothing got me anywhere. The big thing I'm trying to accomplish is to be able to use vmhgfs but, I'd like to have all the tools if possible. Here is what I did.

  • Error While running Installer to upgrade to 9.2.0.4

    Hello,
    I was trying to upgrade my database 9.2.0.1 to 9.2.0.4.
    Following up the article "Oracle9i Database Patch Set Notes Release 9.2.0.4"
    When I try to run the Installer for the Patch set, I receive this error:
    Initializing Java Virtual Machine from /u01/oracle/Disk1/./stage/Components/oracle.swd.jre/1.3.1.0.0a/1/DataFiles/Expanded/jre/aix/jre/bin/java. Please wait...

    Although I exported the display to number 2 : #export DISPLAY=2
    and googling for a possible solution, I did the following with no luck:
    $DISPLAY=:2.0
    $ export DISPLAY
    $ xhost +
    I am using the cygwin to get to the GUI of the operating system.
    Any help?
    Thank you.

    Hello Srini,
    Thank you for your reply. I ran the installer located in /u01/oracle/oui/install and pressed the 'About Oracle Universal Installer' and the version of the oui was 9.2.0.4
    I then clicked on the Installed products, it took like for ever to execute, so I ran the sqlplus.
    When I connencted to the sqlplus, I saw that the database is still 9.2.0.1
    So I continued to installation procedure marked on "Oracle9i Database Patch Set Notes Release 9.2.0.4" document.
    after installing the new oui, I should execute the $ORACLE_HOME/root.sh in a root session. I did and I suppose to see the installer window and go through with the wizard but the cursor just returns.
    Is there any thing wrong with my installation procedure, although I followed the steps mentioned in the document step by step.
    kinldy advice.

  • 8.1.5 on RH 6.1 fails

    Hi,
    I'm trying to install Oracle 8.1.5 (EE) on Red Hat 6.1. Everything goes fine until I get the message:
    Summary Oracle8i Enetrprise Edition 8.1.5:
    Space requirements
    Volume / Required 444 MB: Available not available.
    But I have 3GB free space.........
    Please help.
    //Patrik

    I have carried out the instructions as detailed, I then run the dbassist $ and get the documented error, continuing I choose custom and define my database. Once complete I choose to create the script rather than run the "Create Database" directly. Once complete I then run the SQL script to find out that Oracle is not loaded, looking at the first script that it tries to run I notice that the original error that I get is a shared segment error... Any Thoughts??

    Ignore it. There are some other quircks to it. Namely:
    1) Select oinstall as the group to own the Oracle software. After entering
    this you will be prompted to run the /tmp/orainstall/oraInstall.sh as root.
    Please make sure you run this as root before proceeding.
    % cd /tmp/orainstall
    % ./oraInstall.sh
    2) When you reach the "Installation Types" window, you must select Custom.
    3) When you reach the "Available Product Components" window, you can select
    everything. Do NOT de-select intermedia.
    5) You will asked whether you wish to create a database as part of the
    installation. Regardless of your answer, the installer will start the
    Database Configuration Assistant (dbassist) and attempt to create a
    database at the end of the install.
    6) When dbassist runs at the end of the install, the following error is
    displayed "JNLS Exception: oracle.ntp.jnls.JNLSException Unable to find any
    National Character Sets. Please check your Oracle installation."
    This is a known problem <bug:884001>. Ignore the warning.
    7) When database assistant starts, select cancel to exit. You should not
    attempt to create a database before applying the 8.1.5.0.2 patch set.
    8) When you exit the database assistant, you will go back into the Oracle
    Universal Installer to complete the installation. Exit the installer at
    this point.
    Now you are out of the installer, there are some additional tasks to
    perform. The file permissions on lsnrctl and several other executables will be
    incorrect (despite the fact you ran $ORACLE_HOME/root.sh at the appropriate time). To
    fix this do the following:
    $ cd $ORACLE_HOME/install/utl
    $ ./linux.sh
    This will recompile and fix the permissions problems.
    Now you need to apply the 8.1.5.0.2 patch set. Extract the file you
    downloaded into a suitable directory.
    $ tar xvfz linux_815patches.tgz
    $ cd linux_815patches
    $ ./linux_815patches.sh
    This will apply the patches. Check the log files in /tmp for any errors.<HR></BLOCKQUOTE>

  • Oracle 9.2 Installation Guide; User question

    Hi,
    i want to install Oracle 9.2 on SuSE Linux 9.3 professional. Beacuase
    of that i read Ivan Kartik's Installation Guide. But i don't understand the
    first step. I create an oracle user, but how can i log in as the oracle
    user?
    Because whenever i try to install oracle as the standard user (not the root)
    i get the error that i don't have the specific permissions to install the
    configuration assistant.
    Can somebody help me, please??
    Thank you
    Daniel

    Hello.
    You don't need contact me because I'm checking this section every day.
    Installtion of Oracle SW is performed under non privileged user (usually oracle).
    Of course there are some steps which could be done with super user rights only.
    As far I know there are three steps which must be done by root:
    1. create oracle user (dba group)
    2. execute the /tmp/OrainstRoot.sh script
    3. execute $ORACLE_HOME/root.sh after installation
    4. (optional) install new JRE (as desribed in my article)
    If you don't have root acount there must be a person responsible for OS (System administrator - SA) with the root account. So when you need to perform som of above steps contant your SA.
    I can see (from your post) that you have root account.
    I create an oracle user, but how can i log in as the oracle user?Example:
    Assume that you are logged as root (or other user). In this case use following command:
    su - oracle
    Because whenever i try to install oracle as the standard user (not the root)
    i get the error that i don't have the specific permissions to install the
    configuration assistant.1. You could use other shell (terminal) where you will be logged as root to perform steps under privilegged user
    2. or when "su - oracle" was used then simply exit current session by "exit" command.
    3. you could login as root when you execute su - command.

  • Grid Infrastructure installable for Oracle Restart only (No ASM)?

    Hello,
    Can Oracle Grid Infrastructure be installed for its Oracle Restart functionality only? i.e., No ASM,; this box uses local RAID 5 filesystems only.
    This is a standalone 32-bit RHEL 5 system with Oracle Database 10gR2 already installed that I intend to upgrade to 11gR2. Just experimenting with installing Grid Infrastructure for only its restart capability. There isn't anything out there I've found that addresses this other than the Oracle doc stating that the Infrastructure must be installed if I want to use ASM or Oracle Restart.
    I'm currently in the installer in a Software Only installation waiting for my SysAdmin to run the root.sh script, but in looking at this script, it looks like it might try to do things with CRS, voting files and the like, which do not exist.
    Thank you!
    -Jon

    Hi Erik,
    Can Oracle Grid Infrastructure be installed for its Oracle Restart functionality only? Yes ... you can do that installing Software Only
    I'm currently in the installer in a Software Only installation waiting for my SysAdmin to run the root.sh script, but in looking at this script, it looks like it might try to do things with CRS, voting files and the like, which do not exist.Don't worry about that ... at the end of the execution of the root.sh script will report a proceedings to configure only Oracle Restart.
    Only this resource "ora.evmd" will appear online.
