Experience in programming LabVIEW with HP E1432A

Can someone share his/her experience in controlling HP/Agilent E1432A VXI module?
The last posting on the forum about HP E1432A was dated in 2001. I know NI has a LabVIEW plug&lay instrument driver (wrapper) now for the E1432A module.
How easy is it to synchronize multiple E1432A modules in a VXI chassis? and what is maximum numbers of channel and sampling rate you used successfully via an NI VXI-1394 (FireWire).
You help is most appreciated.
Regards
Ian Ren

Hi, Chris
I used the Agilent E8491B, IEEE1394 Firewire interface. With MS Windows 2000 & LabView
I think i had 4 E1432A cards (64 chns)
The COM measurement engine software was a free down load from VXI Technologies who have taken on production of the 1432 type of cards from Hewlett Packard / Agilent it enables you to use active x to control the cards it originally was also provided free from Agilent. But looking at their (VXI Tech) site today I do not see it, suggest you ask them they may have changed the name.
I add here the text supplied with the software help file to give you some more idea of what it does.
"ME4X library is created on top of the E1432 Plug and Play driver.  One question is whether you should use ME4X or the Plug and Play driver when you create an application.  ME4X has both advantages and weaknesses against using the Plug and Play driver.   The biggest advantage is the ease of use.  It is possible to build an application with less than 1/10 of development time.   There are some drawbacks.  To make the library easy to use, many functions are hard coded in the library.  This will cause some compromise in the feature set and performance overhead.  Although ME4X covers most applications, there may be a case where a feature you want to use is only available in the Plug and Play library.   If the measurement speed is more critical than flexibility, you may want to write a simple but not flexible program using Plug and Play.   Here are some  general guidelines to determine which library should be used.
· If you want to build an application quickly without learning the hardware detail.     Use ME4X
· If you want to spend more time for data analysis and testing than application development.   Use ME4X
· If you are not comfortable programming in C or other low-level languages.    Use ME4X
· If you already have a working program using Plug and Play, there is no reason to use ME4X.
· Your application must run on HP-UX operating system.     Use the Plug and Play library
· You are a professional programmer, time for program development is not critical, and you want to build an application to get the most out of the hardware in terms of speed and features.   Use Plug and Play library
If you have never written an application for E1432/33/34 VXI modules and are still not sure whether to use ME4X or the Plug and Play library, I highly recommend to start with ME4X."
Hope that helps.

CASE 2: memory usage using VITs (!)
    CASE 3: updating datastructures:
CASE 4: shutdown of the whole system
CASE 5: stability & heath monitoring
    CASE 6: Inifiles
CASE 7: When the hardware is getting crappy
    Total
    application overview:
    We have a
main application. This main application is mainly empty as hell, and only holds
a plugin functionality (to register and administer plugins) and holds an
architecture that holds the following items:
    Queue state
machine for main application error handling
    Queue state
    machine for status messages

    machine for updating virtual variables
    Event state
    machine for GUI

nice tools like the good old BootP and other juicy stuff
    Supervision
of variables (like the NI tag engine, but here we have our own datastructures)
    Generation
of virtual variables (so that the user can configure easy mathematical
    functions and combining existing tags)
    Licensing
of plugins (hell we free-lance programmers need some money to don't we?)
    Handles
all communication between plugins themselves, or directly to a plugin or vice
    versus.
    And now we don't
talk about that (or marketing) the main application .

    CASE 3: updating datastructures:
As we do NOT use clusters here (that would
just be consuming) we only use an 1D array of data that needs to be updated in
different functional globals. If the the number of VITS exceeds so that the
updating of this datastructures becomes the bottleneck, this would cause
delays. And since in this example we use 250 serial interfaces (lol) we do not
want to disrupt that by any delays. When this happends, does anyone know a good
    solution to transfer data?
    A thought:
perhaps sending it down to the plugin and let the plugin handle it, this should
save some time, but then again if more VITs are added again this would become a
bottleneck and the queue would fill up after a while unable to process it fast
    enough. Any opinions?
CASE 4: shutdown of the whole system
    Lets say we
want to close it all down, but the VITs need perhaps to do some shutdown
procedure towards the hardware, that can be heavy.
    If we ask
them to shutdown all together we can use an natofier or userevent to do this
job. Well, what happends next is that the CPU will jump to the roof, and well
that can only cause dataloss and trouble. The solution here was to let the
plugin shut them all down one by one, when one has been shutdown, begin at the
next. Pro; CPU will not jump to the moon. Con's: shutdown is going to take a
while. Be ready with a cup of coffee.
    Also we
want the main application not to exit before we exit. The solution above solved
this as the plugin knows when all have been shut down, and can then shut itself
down. When all plugins are shutdown - the application ends.
    Another
solution is to use rendovous (arg cant spell it) and only shut the system down
    when all rendezvous have met.
CASE 5: stability & heath monitoring
    This IS
using a lot of memory. How to get it down. And has anyone experienced any
difficulties with labview using A LOT of memory? I want to know if something
gets corrupt. The VITs send out error information in case, but what if
something weird happens, how can I surveillance all the VIT's in memory to know
one is malfunctioning in an effective way/code (as backup
    solution  so the application knows
    something is wrong?
    CASE 6: Inifiles
    Well, we
all like them. Even if XML is perhaps more fahionally. Now Ive runned some
tests on large inifiles. And the labview Inifile functions use ages to parsing
all this information. Perhaps an own file structure in binary format or
something would be better? (and rather create an configuration program)?
CASE 7: When the hardware is getting crappy:
    Now what if
the system is hitting the limit and gradually exceeds the hardware req. of the
software. What to do then (thinking mostly of memory usage)? Needing to install
it on more servers or something and splitting configurations? Is that the best
way to solve this? Any opinions?
Wow.  Time for a coffee cup. Impressive if someone
actually read all of this. My goal is to reach the 1000 VIT mark.. someday.. so
any opinions, and just ask if something unclear or other stuff, Im open for all
stuff, since I see the software will hit a memory barrier someday if I want to
    reach that 1000 mark hehe

    Hi Pepe
You cannot say which is faster, the LV or the C programm. The only way to be sure is to program in both environments and to check than. Check this for some benchmark examples:

  • Examples for good programming practice with multiple DAQmx tasks

I'm writing a program to continuously log data from 8 counters, 8 encoders, and 8 voltages. The proof of concept VI with a single counter was simple and elegant, but scaling up to all signals resulted in a wiring mess. I've been working through the Labview Core courses, and am currently on Core 3. I still haven't come across a discussion on how to work with multiple DAQmx tasks without making a mess of the block diagram. Can anyone point me in the right direction?
Also, say I have a state machine that has a configure, idle, and logging states. I need to set the initial values of the encoders during configuration, and keep up with their changes while in the idle state so I have appropriate starting values when entering the logging state. Can anyone point to an example that shows how this might be accomplished?
    Thanks

I'm very familiar with AE's/Functional Globals - but I have struggled in the past with handling multiple DAQmx tasks - particularly when you're using multiple devices and using different types of measurements which require seperate tasks/handling (e.g. such as thermocouples which require extra compensation).
I'm not even sure I know whare the requirements are for needing multiple tasks - I know you can need multiple tasks for a single device if the type of measurement is different but can you share an Analogue Input task amongst multiple devices?
I think in hindsight (and without too much thought now) it looks like a good case for Object Oriented LabVIEW - with a base DAQmx class (initialise, configure, start, acquire, stop, close etc.) and then child classes for each type of measurement (with one task associated with each - and private data unique to that specific class). You then hold an array of objects (one for each task) and iterate through each one with dynamic despatch to get the data.
I don't know your particular experience level of using LabVIEW (and as such, OO may not be appropriate) - but as a wider discussion of 'best practice' it seems like an appropriate method I would use going forward.

  • How can I read pdf files from LabVIEW with different versions of Acrobat reader?

How can I read pdf files from LabVIEW with different versions of Acrobat reader?
I have made a LabVIEW program where I have possibility to read a PDF document.  When I made this LabVIEW program it was Acrobat Reader 5.0.5 that was installed on the PC. Lather when the Acrobat Reader was upgraded to version 6.0, there was an error when VI tries to launch the LabVIEW program. And Later again when we upgraded to Acrobat Reader 7.0.5 I must again do some changes and rebuild the EXE files again
It isn't so very big job to do the changes in one single LabVIEW program, but we have built a lot of LabVIEW programs so this take time to due changes every time vi update Acrobat Reader. (We have build EXE files.)
The job is to right click the ActiveX container and Click "Insert ActiveX Object", then I can brows the computer for the new version of acrobat Reader. After this I must rebuild all the "methods" in the Activex call to make the VI executable again.
Is there a way to build LabVIEW program so I don't have to do this job every time we update Acrobat Reader?
This LabVIEW program is written in LabVIEW 6.1, but I se the problem is the same in LabVIEW 8.2.

What is your question? You've described what the program is supposed to do, but it's not clear what you're asking about. Do you need help getting started? If so, have you gone through the LabVIEW tutorials? You and look over the material in the NI Developer Zone's Learning Center which provides links to other materials and other tutorials. You can also take the online courses for free. Have you looked through the many examples that ship with LabVIEW for data acquisition?

    Hi
I experience a very similar problem.

  • How do I run a J-type thermocouple to the usb-6363 DAQ and program labview to measure temperature?

I have a usb-6363 DAQ and a J-type non-contact thermocouple that I am looking to connect and measure temperature through. However, the DAQ does not have any T/C inputs, which is needed to measure in the thermocouple temperature. I am connecting the thermouple to an analog input (+/-) and I am not looking to buy an amplifier, converter or any other hardware. I believe there is a way to program labview to read in the voltages of the thermocouple and convert it into accurate temperature readings. Any help/ideas?

    Hello George,
This tutorial should step you through the basic process of configuring the device and connecting the thermocouple:
Tutorial: Connect Thermocouples to a Data Acquisition (DAQ) Device
http://www.ni.com/gettingstarted/setuphardware/dataacquisition/thermocouples.htm#Connecting a Thermocouple to Your Device
From there, there are a number of things you can do- I'd recommend taking a look at the LabVIEW shipping examples (Help>>Find Examples...) as well as the DAQmx getting started tutorials:
Getting Started with NI-DAQmx: Main Page
    http://www.ni.com/white-paper/5434/en
At first glance, the 6363 you're using should have enough resolution to acquire usable data from a thermocouple- if you attempt reading raw voltages be sure that the acquisition range is configured for +/- 0.1V, though.

    Tom L.

how to use labview with the handyboard
    Thx...

I'm assuming you're talking about this, since you didn't provide a link for those of us who don't know what you're talking about.
As the other poster said, you didn't say how you want to use LabVIEW with it.  If you want to write LabVIEW programs than run on the microprocessor, then you're out of luck.  If you want LabVIEW to interact with it, then you've got a couple of options, SPI probably being the best, but it also has DI and AI that you could use to communicate with it - the DI's could be used as a parallel interface.

  • Link labview with other software which can do hydraulic simulation such as Nanas Fluent.

       Hi all:
I currently want to exchange data between labview with Ansys fluent. That is: sending flow boundary condition and initial condition from labview to hydraulic simulation software (ansys fluent), and get simulation result back to labview from that software.
I didn't find any modules online to link labview and fluent together. (There are others such as Labview Solidworks module)
Is any one know how to link labview to any software which can do hydraulic simulation?
             Thank you very much. :-)

Do you know of any other programs that exchange data with Ansys?  If so how do they do it?  ActiveX is a common way for communicating between LabVIEW and other programs, is this an option?

  • Run a cmd command in LabVIEW with parameters

I have an executable program, for example myprogram.exe, located in "C:\Documents and Settings\myname\myprogram.exe" (I use windows xp 32 bit)
When I run the program (by running cmd and type "myprogram.exe > to_text.txt" on the command line), the program will print out the result to that text file.
But when I try to run the whole thing on LabVIEW, I can't manage to do so. LabVIEW only supports using the "Run Command" of Windows, not the cmd. (using the SystemExec vi)
So how can I run "myprogram.txt > to_text.txt" on LabVIEW as I run it in cmd? Moreover, how can I send the break event (by pressing Ctrl+C in the cmd) by LabVIEW to stop the program?
    With my appreciations!

I made this a while ago and haven't tested it too much but it should do what you want.  Provide the application path, then the switches in the array.  It does work with built in commands like dir and copy.

  • Interface Labview with custom board

Hello, I want to use Labview with a board I designed. To be brief my board has an Altera FPGA, some memory, and a fiber-optic transceiver. I want to develop a Labview program to display the data I'm receiving from my fiber-optic transceiver. I want to know if this is possible to have Labview interface with a non-National Instruments board? What do I need in order for Labview to work with my board. In my previous design I had the received data written directly to the computer's main memory. Could I do something like that, just tell Labview where in memory to get the data to be displayed?

Absolutely. I'm doing that right now with VISA. Look at the posting here. There are some links there in how to procede.

  • Will all of the CS4 programs work with Terminal Services?

I think the title sums up my question...
Will all of the CS4 programs work with Terminal Services?

You should be able to solve that problem.
MiFis have a default power setting on them that turns off the device after XX minutes of no use (As determined by the MiFi).  You can find and modify this setting in the MiFi Admin webpage.  It should be under the advanced area and can be configured to leave the MiFi on all the time.
That being said, no MiFi model will behave very well as an always on home internet replacement device.  Dedicated home cable routers and modems will always perform better, they are designed for that scenario.  By comparison MiFis are designed to be light weight travel devices, they simply do not have the hardware necessary to be left online all day long with acceptable results.  MiFis are more appropriate as a backup, mobile or temporary internet solution.
If you are looking for a home internet always on internet connection device you would be safer going with stronger hardware like a USB Modem+CradlePoint router, the VZW 4G LTE router or VZW HomeFusion.  Any of those devices are going to provide you with a better experience for your home than the MiFis without additional equiptment like boosters and antennas.  Some CradlePoint routers can be expensive but perform very well, the 4G LTE router has mixed review and the nice thing about HomeFusion is the special data plan and high powered equiptment.

    Hi all,
I'm in the FIRST robotics community, and next year we're getting a copy

Anywho, we're interested in using some sort of source control to keep

I'm wondering if any of ya'll, LabView users, have ever used Git for

    Any information would be helpful.
