Experience with USB Wifi dongle?

Anyone have any experience setting up USB Wifi dongles? I need to get one, and I'm not sure which one to use. I've seen the pages that list compatible models, but every one that I Google comes up with forums posts about something going horribly wrong with them. What do you use, or know that others use?
Thanks.

Is the new module for Netgear WN111v2 among others.
Any one has had any luck making this Driver?
The home for driver
http://wireless.kernel.org/en/developer … esting.git
The firmware
http://wireless.kernel.org/en/users/Drivers/carl9170
I really don't know how to use git......
So any help Appreciated.
I built this driver yesterday, and it works great!! I have the NetGear WN111v2 as well, and suddenly realized how incrediblt slow my connections were.
So I tried building it, and (for me at least) the carl9170 driver rocks.
What I did: Download the compat-wireless tarball from here: http://wireless.kernel.org/download/com … eless-2.6/ and choose the newest one.
Untar it somewhere, like ~/build/ or something. Then, from a terminal, cd to the directory you untar'ed, and type
./scripts/driver-select carl9170
as a normal user.
Then
make
and
sudo make install
should install it just fine remember to have kernel26-headers and linux-api-headers installed first!
Now you only need to get the firmware from http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/ … l9170-1.fw and put it in /lib/firmware/
And to be on the safe side, add !arusb_lnx and !ar9170usb to your MODULES() in rc.conf, so the drivers don't conflict. Good luck!
EDIT: I found some time after all you can find my PKGBUILD here: http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=44100

  • How do I use a USB WiFi dongle with a MacBook?

I recently acquired a USB wifi dongle and downloaded the appropriate driver. When plugged into my MacBook it will connect to my Graphite Airport base station. I can even use Airport Admin Utility to change setting in the Graphite ABS with this USB dongle.
The driver software also included a 'client utility' which I use to get the dongle to function with the MacBook. It also required adding the dongle to the list of network [ports via the Network Preferences in OS X.
But I do not know how to use it to access the internet through the ABS. My ABS has a 56kbps dialup modem in it which I use with the MacBook's internal WiFi card as my way of accessing the internet normally. I would like to know how to use this new USB wifi dongle to do the same thing though.
    TIA

If you noticed on my jpg of my settings the very top left window shows that the MacBook thinks the dongle is indeed connected to the internet. In actuality the dongle is only connected to the Graphite ABS.
My thinking is that the Graphite ABS (Apples first ABS) is simply set up to listen to Apple's own Airport card when it comes to the ABS' internal 56k modem. Maybe someone can tell me from experience that a Graphite will listen to a USB wifi dongle?
A bit of my personal philosophy... Apple stuff generally 'just works'. It does not require a lot of windoze-like 'jumping thru hoops' to make it work. So when it does not 'just work' I tend to think that it is because it can't.
Didn't try turning off the firewall, but if it requires that I would not want to use it anyway.
Yes, the ABS does distribute IPs, or at least something does because they are different from one time to the next.
Access Control is on, but again, I require that so it would have to work that way for me or it would have no value to me.
Again I will say, I certainly appreciate your help BDAqua. But I am starting to think we may be trying to do something that cannot be done unless you know otherwise?
Again, I would like to ask, is there is anyone using a Graphite ABS with any USB wifi card/dongle?

  • Internet Sharing via USB Wifi Dongle?

I just acquired a first gen Mini (1.25Ghz, 1GB RAM) with no Airport built in. I was able to add wireless to it via a Ralink 802.11n USB dongle. Here's my question:
Can I connect the Mini to the internet via ethernet and then use the USB dongle to share the connection with other Macs in my house?
I currently have an old PowerMac G4 acting as a server/wireless router. (Ethernet in to give it a real IP address for easy access from anywhere. Airport out to give internet access to my MacBook Pro.) It's a great setup, and serves me well (no pun intended), but if I could get the Mini to take its place, it would save me room.
Anyone know how to get one of these USB Wifi dongles to share out internets?
Thanks in advance for any thoughts.
    SJ (no, not that SJ)

Can I connect the Mini to the internet via ethernet and then use the USB dongle to share the connection with other Macs in my house?
I don't have a USB wireless adapter, but I believe in order for this to work, you would have to be able to select it when attempting to configure Internet Sharing.
Does this USB adapter show up in the list of network devices under the Network panel in System Preferences? If it does, go to the Sharing panel. From this panel, select Internet Sharing; choose the USB adapter for the "Share your connection from" list, and then, choose "To computers using" = "Ethernet."

  • Any experience with USB 2.0 upgrade with VIA VT6202 chipset?

    Hello,
I'd like to know, if anybody suceeded with upgrading his PowerMac with USB 2.0 PCI card, which has VIA VT6202 chipset?
I found some of them very cheap and in one e-shop there was a tiny notice about supporting OS saying - MacOS X supported! These cards are sold under different names but all of them have same "L" shape, 1 port inside and 4 outside and there is VIA VT6202 sign on the chip .
    Btw I have Quicksilver 2002, 800MHz
    Thank you for your answers.
    Honza

Well, I've found some notices about cards with VIA chipsets and they aren't very good - NEC seems to be more reliable.
So again, does anybody have any experience with USB 2.0 PCI cards with NEC chipset?
    Thanks

  • Mac Mini PPC and Usb wifi dongle?

So I have a ppc mac mini and I purchased a wifi dongle for it. (not the Belkin one)
I have drivers for it that appear to be correct, everything installs fine.
However when I go to network to configure the device there is no option to choose usb as a network interface. The only options are firewire, or internal modem.
I'm sure this has been addressed but I've searched and search.

Sorry wow been a long time since I was here, but things have progressed ... somewhat.
Turns out there were specific drivers that I was not in possession of. The manufacturer supplied them and I thought all was good.
Turns out I'm having another problem now that it took some time to figure out ...
The dongle works for a time, but seems to get booted from my router or something after going to sleep or rebooting.
The weird thing is that the dongle software itself and the mac os think its connected, it shows an IP address that isn't on my network.
If I reboot the router and then reset my IP on the mac mini it will work until it goes to sleep or reboots.
I updated my Linksys WRT54G to DDWRT to see if that would fix things but even with new firmware and reset settings only this mac is affected by this problem. Also the dongle doesn't do it on any other computer.
So its mac mini/dongle/router specific ...
thanks again for all the suggestions and help

  • USB wifi dongle/adapter - any recommendations?

My PC Card slots are borked, so I need to go with usb for wireless. Anything 11g that I've found is either not linux-friendly (I want to go native, not ndiswrapper) or USB 2.0 (not possible on my 5-year-old Dell) or both.
So my current thinking is 11b, second-hand, either prism2 or atmel. Does anyone have any relevant experience to share?
    TIA

I'm using a Netgear WG111 for my laptop, which, like yours, also doesn't have support for USB 2.0.  It works very well using ndiswrapper.  Like phrakture said, there's really nothing wrong with ndiswrapper.  For a prism2 driver device, I've also used the Netgear MA111 for both my laptop and my TiVo.  I sometimes had trouble getting it to connect to WEP encrypted access points, but that's probably due more to the fact that I'm an idiot, rather than some deficiency with the MA111 or the wlan-ng drivers.  Both of these  are wicked small and I got them for less than $20.  I highly recommend either one of them.

  • Using the Network Three Wifi Dongle with Time-capsule

Hi folks, i have just joined the forum today but have been an apple user for 2 years now. I do not use a router to get on the inter as I have recently purchased the 3 WiFi Dongle (mifi) and just wirelessly connect my ipad, iphone and macbook pro to it. My question is can I connect my macbook pro to my dongle and also to time-capsule wirelessly at the same time or is it only 1 device at a time?
Also is there a way I can connect my USB wifi Dongle to my time-capsule and just have everything connecting to my Time-capsule?
Any information on this would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks
    Dave

Welcome to the discussion area, harperdg33!
You might want to take a look a device this this USB Broadband Adapter to provide an ethernet signal to your Time Capsule, which in turn could act as the wireless router for your network.
The key element with any adapter like this is to verify that it supports your particular service, so you may need to do some checking about this.

  • COMPATIBLE USB WiFi ADAPTER/DONGLES FOR HP 470 MOBILE PRINTERS???

I've misplaced the HP USB WIFI dongle/adapter (HP Q6274A)  to my H470 mobile printer and was wondering if another (Non HP) usb wifi adapter/dongle will work...until I find my original HP Q6274A dongle?  Incidentally, I happened to notice Non-HP WiFi USB adapter/dongles are every where, they are very inexpensive and also offer the latest WiFi technology enhancements, ie: b/g/n & 300 Mbp/s, etc.  I'm hopeful HP customer support will offer a few suggestions regarding other compatible H470 WiFi dongles... however, I doubt they'll suggest anything other than their hard to find/obsolete HP Q6274A ... any thoughts would be greatly appreciated =)

    Hi xxwildbilxx,
Are you still experiencing issues?  The adaptors may or may not work.  If you have a spare, it is certainly worth a try, however I cannot guarantee compatibility. The specific adaptor for this model is readily available through online ordering systems.  You can also contact HP technical support to compare best pricing options for these adaptors.  Global contact information can be accessed Here.
    Hope this helps!

  • USB Wifi Adapter troubleshooting

    Hello everybody,
As many people I confront a lot of problems related to wifi on my macbook after upgrading to lion. Tryed many ways to fix it but it just keeps coming back so I found an USB dongle wich I had for a while. It has a Realtek RTL8188CUS Chipset and looks similar to the one in the picture. It suppose to work on the MAC.
    Problem:
I have no provided CD for drivers, but found them on the realtek website http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/downloadsView.aspx?Langid=1&PFid=48&Level=5& Conn=4&ProdID=274&DownTypeID=3&GetDown=false&Downloads=true .
    Basicly what should happen:
    1. I install the drivers
    2. Restart the macbook
    3. After booting up I insert the donge
    4. Widow pops up for configuring new network adapter and installs rquired client software.
But after rebooting my mashine and inserting donge nothing happens. I tried to look up in system prefrences, network diagnostics. Doesnt look that it even recognises something here.
In System Information under USB I can see this:
         Composite Device:
           Product ID:          0x8176
Vendor ID:          0x0bda  (Realtek Semiconductor Corp.)
           Version:          2.00
           Serial Number:          00e04c000001
           Speed:          Up to 480 Mb/sec
           Manufacturer:          RR
           Location ID:          0xfd100000 / 3
           Current Available (mA):          500
           Current Required (mA):          500
I have two macs at home, one runs lion second runs snow leopard. Both act the same. Tried many different drivers, watched some videos on youtube even found the manual online which was not helpful at all.
Maybe there is someone who had this issue before or maybe just has some ideas about it?
    Thank you for the support!

    James,
I have been getting exactly the same problem on my Oct-2011 macbook pro. OSX Lion 10.7.3.
I have been searching various websites for solutions.   There are various stories about upgrades, reboots, drivers, OS versions.  Everytime someone says one of them works 5 others reply, "It didn't for me".
The most frequent and plausible explanation seemed to be the macbook pro aluminium frame blocked radio signals.   Mine works perfectly if i'm in the same rooom or the next room to the router. But elsewhere I've got a 50/50 shot that it will connect or be fast enough to browse the web. My old Dell had a good connection every single time from anywhere in the house.
I eventually decided to bypass the problem by installing a usb wifi dongle.  I went to my apple supplier. Peats of Parnell St. Dublin. They recommended edimax ew-7622UMn. I just plugged it in and to see what would happen, which was nothing.
I loaded the mac driver from the cd. rebooted, plugged it in again; still nothing... It couldn't even tell if there was something attached.
I downloaded the latest mac driver from the edimax website; still nothing.
So I decided to-****-with-it.  I brought them both back to where I got them. They could do no better. The USB dongle wroked perfectly in every PC in the store and saw their wifi network. my Macbook pro and every apple machine they had couldn't even see the thing. Then they tried another MAC compatible wifi dongle; they got the same results on my machine and others. They suggested I call Edimax support.
Edimax said it should work fine and that they never saw this problem before!!!
The reason I bought a macbook is because I don't have time for this stuff. I just wanted a machine that works. That's exactly what it does 50% of the time. The other 50% I get a slow or no wifi connection
If you or anyone figures out how to make USB wifi work with a MacBookPro please post the answer. I just want reliable wifi from my Home office.

  • My Airport is showing too few bars - USB wifi adapter needed?

I have a Mac Pro (2011) running 10.6.8. I'm getting 1 bar on the wifi icon in my menubar, and very slow internet speeds. right next to it, on my desk, is my MacBook Air, which is showing 5 bars on the wifi icon, and great speeds. My router is downstairs (considerable distance); is this normal that the Mac Pro has less airport sensitivity than a MacBook? Anything to be done about it? Can I get a USB-based wifi dongle that would work better - are there ones that are known to work with Macs?

is this normal that the Mac Pro has less airport sensitivity than a MacBook?
Yes, because the WiFi antennas are inside the metal box of the Mac Pro (65lb tower).
The MacBook has its antenna tied to a metal plate surrounding the screen, so when you open it to use it, the antenna placement is as good as possible.
Both your MacBook Pro and your Mac Pro achieve best speeds when used with a Router that uses dual-band, including the higher 5GHz band (channels above 13). In the lower 2.5GHz band, there is lot more competition from neighbors and baby monitors and portable (not cellular) Phones.
All Apple's current base Stations can operate in the higher bands as well, but inexpensive routers may not. USB dongles that are not Mac-oriented or operate only in the lower band may give mixed results. MacSales used to sell a USB Wifi dongle (low-band only) for under US$15, but they have suddenly gone upscale with a dual band model with a cradle and better capabilities for about US$25. The older model has disappeared.

  • Freezing Arch on USB wifi

    Hi,
I've got SMC2862w-G (45Mb) USB wifi dongle working using ndiswrapper.
My normal web browsing is quite good but If I down load or FTP a file >100Mb Arch frezes and I have to disconnect mains to reset the pc. (No mouse, Alt+tab etc...)
Are there any buffres etc I can change to improve data transfer rates? or is this a fault?
System woks perfectly with 100Mb lan connection.
    Thanks

bostoniman wrote:What is the INF file you are using?  I have a Linksys WUSB54G USB adapter, and I am experiencing a similar problem.  It appears to load fine during boot, but if I download either a large file, or have a high rate of transfer, the system freezes.  Also, if i simply leave my system idle after boot, the system will lock up after about 15 minutes.  This has started happening only after the upgrade to the initrd-based kernel.  So, I was wondering which INF file you use to see if it was the same one, or similar one, to the one I use.
I downloaded Winxp drivers from SMC website. (The drivers included in the product CD did not work)
It seems to be I've got the same problem. I have this problem even on 2.6.13 Arch Kernel. No initrd
I saw another post about ndiswrapper hanging problem.  It seems to be ndiswrapper people don't want to know you unless you are a UNIX guru.
I don't know what to do here.

  • Problem with USB speakers and new Mac Mini

I have a USB sound system consisting of a pair of Harman Kardon soundsticks and a woofer from probably 10 years ago (bought and used originally with a Mac). I have tried driving it my new Mac Mini. It works fine for about a minute; then the music stops. Here's what I've tried to diagnose the problem:
    1. The problem does not occur when these speakers are driven from my Macbook Air (about 3 years old).
    2. The OS and iTunes software is up to date on both machines (10.9.5 and 12.0.1.26).
    3. It does not depend on which USB port I use on the Mac Mini.
    4. Using a port on a USB extender on the Mac Mini does not solve the problem.
    5. The iTunes Preference settings are the same on both machines.

Sorry, no actual experience with USB Audio devices.
I found this in the Pro forum, but the outlook doesn't seem good:
