Exporting CYMK Black as Rich Black

I continue to struggle with getting CYMK Black as rich black.  I have Illustrator CS4.....
Settings that seem relevant follow:
The Document Color Mode is set to CYMK
The Appearance of Black is set to both display and export as Rich Black
When I do an export to JPG or Print to Adobe PDF driver, the black come out as dark gray
The object color appear correct 0,0,0,100
The black displays as rich black when I am working on it in illustrator
What am I missing here..... The way I work around it to send a proof to a customer is change the doc color mode to RGB.....but that really only is suitable for all black art......and it's seems to be a cludgy work around.
I guess the question is why isn't illustrator CS4 outputing rich black when I set ouput as rich black for export?
I have read other posts here on the subject but they seem to be work arounds as well.
Is there something I am missing here fundementally??  Perhaps another setting I am unaware of?
Thanks!

Rich Black is more like 100% Black 60% C 60% M and 60% Y there are all types of combinations printers use.
What you should do is to make swatches of your various rich blacks after discussing it with your printers as to their preferences and your needs and name them to correspond to the printer (vender) and then save it as a rich black library that way you won't even have thin about it in the future.

  • Working file/ export different black shades lightroom 5.6?

I've browsed through the other threads relating to this but I can't seem to make heads or tails of it with regards to my specific situation!
So I use lightroom 5.6 on my laptop, but plug in an external monitor via HDMI to use lightroom for better quality. Essentially, viewing an image on chrome, windows photo gallery etc all give very similar views, but when imported to lightroom the colours go blander and the blacks aren't as, well, black, but then when exporting, the blacks get much darker, so the image I see in lightroom is not the same as the exported file.
What I'd like to know is:
    1) how can I see in lightroom what I will get if I export it, rather than having this difference in the blacks?
    2) would this issue exist if I'd shot in RAW rather than JPEG?
    3) will upgrading to a newer version of lightroom affect this?
    Thanks in advance

I'm not sure any of these solutions will work as they images are all being viewed on the same monitor in the same place, but the problem is alternating between viewing an image in LR, and the JPEG exported by LR showing up differently on the same monitor.@
What do you see when you compare the LR exported JPEG to the "original file" from inside LR? You said:
"Essentially, viewing an image on chrome, windows photo gallery etc all give very similar views, but when imported to lightroom the colours go blander and the blacks aren't as, well, black..."
Chrome and Windows Photo Gallery do not use your monitor's calibration profile, so it is normal that they will display images differently than fully color managed applications like LR and PS.
...and you still haven't answered the below question I posted in reply #5
"Please tell us your laptop model, graphics adapter it uses, and monitor model."

  • Export Error on WebI Rich Client

    Hi guys,
Is there any explanation or any suggested solution for the following problem..
(The reason of being able to export a huge report (greater than 9000 pages) as (.csv) on Infoview, while not being able to export it on WebI Rich Client?)

  • 100k black exporting to PDF as rich black

    Hey guys,
I've rattled my brain for long enough over this issue, it's time to ask the wider community.
When I export a pdf with any of my export profiles, all overprint 100k (black swatch) blacks are exported as CMYK. It doesn't matter if it's text or a graphic, the whole document is CMYK.
My export profiles have been bulletproof for the past 2 years, I use numerous printers so I always export using a very generic profile. Within the last two days, something has happened with my settings and eveything I export has this issue. I've poured over my settings and none of it has led me to an answer.
My only solution is converting to my generic profile with numbers preserved.
This makes the problem go away but it doesn't answer the question of why it has changed after all this time.
    Help.
Screenshot of doc open in InDesign with text selected with black swatch selected:
Screenshot of doc in Acrobat pro seps with black unchecked:

Actually, a better question might be how you avoided the rich black using what you believe are the exact same settings over the past two years!!
Simply stated, if you do a PDF export and the CMYK content in your document is in a different CMYK color space than that specified for your output and your export setting call for converting colors to the output color space without the preserve CMYK values specified, there will definitely be a CMYK to C'M'Y'K' conversion occurring. This has been true since at least the first CS version of InDesign (InDesign 3).
The problem with CMYK to C'M'Y'K conversions is that they are a 4-3-4 conversion. The CMYK values are not directly converted to C'M'Y'K' but rather, converted first to the color management connection color space by use of the input profile and then from that color space back to the CMYK color space specified in your export settings. Such 4-3-4 conversions do not preserve pure colorant values. Thus you have the possibility of ending up with rich black if your content's color space and the output color space differ. The preserve numbers option was put in to effectively ignore CMYK to C'M'Y'K' conversion entirely and only deal with the conversion of RGB color spaces to the output color space. (Another technology, known a “device link profiles” can be used for CMYK to C'M'Y'K color conversions, preserving pure colorants, especially black. Unfortunately, InDesign doesn't support device link technologies!)
Then we must come back to why things supposed worked the last two years without specifying the “preserve values” option?!?!? One possibility is that previously your default CMYK color space exactly matched the output color space, thus bypassing any color conversion at all!

  • 320x240 QT export produces black bars on right and left

Ok, this one is strange. So far, it only appears to affect 320x240 targets from sources that don't have square pixels. Starting with a 720x480 DV movie (even if I change the properties to display 640x480), I export directly to 320x240 and I get a movie with black bars down the right and left. I did not tell QT to letterbox or scale, although telling it to scale does no help.
The problem seems to be in the meta data. If I go to the movie's visual properties and change the move dimensions to 324x240 (with preserve aspect ratio unchecked), then the black bars disappear. When I change it back to 320x240, they are still gone and the movie plays fine. I save it and reopen it, and the black bars are back! The same thing happens exporting from Final Cut Pro using Quicktime conversion. This is definitely a bug.
The work around is to export to another 4:3 format with square pixels first and export that to 320x240.
On a related note, the same thing happens when I record a movie in Quicktime at 320x240. I get a recording with black bars down the sides.
This has never happened to me before. I'm a professional QT software developer and a content producer. I've been using Quicktime Pro for a decade, at least. I've been over all of the export settings, and I've deleted all of my Quicktime preference files.
Is there a way to report a bug to Apple?

Regarding: "there's a pretty good chance that your playback target isn't Quicktime Player"...
My assumption is that if your material is 320x240, it's probably that size because you're planning to either display it on a small-screen device, send it to a TV set, embed it in a presentation, or deliver it via the Web. In any of those cases, your final delivery target isn't QuickTime Player, but rather some other mode, such as the QuickTime web plug-in, iPod, AppleTV, or even some other option. In which case the strangeness with the player doesn't seem so strange.
As a workaround, you could layer your 320x240 movie with at 350x240 grey rectangle on the layer behind. That would fix it in QuickTime Player, but it would cause grey bars on either side if you embed into a web page or something like that.

  • Aspect ratio: 4:3 material being exported with black bars (on the sides!)

    Hi all
I'm fairly new to using FinalCut Express: previously I've used other non-linear video editors on Windows.
I'm having a bit of a weird problem: I've got a sequence which was shot entirely in 4:3 (PAL). However, when I try to export that to a QuickTime movie it appears squashed from either side — black bars appear at the sides of the frame and everyone looks very tall and thin. The frame itself is still 4:3 but everything is being squashed to fit in the bars.
I've fiddled with as many settings as are immediately obvious to me to see if I can rectify this, but so far no banana: the sequence is about 90 minutes long and takes about 30 minutes to render each time when exporting.
Has anyone got any ideas what to do about this? I've been trying to do some research into how FCP/FCE handle different aspect ratios, and it seems to be a very complicated topic. In fact, in the same project I've got a sequence which contains almost entirely 16:9 anamorphic material. Ideally I'd like this to be output in a 16:9 frame with the few 4:3 clips appearing with bars on the side. However, it's only being output as 4:3 where the 4:3 clips appear full-frame and the 16:9 clips have bars at top and bottom...
    Hope someone can help!
    Mac Pro: 3GHz, 6GB RAM, X1900XT, BT, AirPort   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    Tom, thanks for the reply.
Everything looks absolutely fine when played back in FCE; it's only when exporting to QuickTime that my problems start. The point is that this 4:3 sequence isn't being output into a 16:9 frame as a pillarbox: what's actually happening is that it's being put into a 4:3 frame with bars, with the result that the content is in fact being squeezed (it looks wrong).
How can you modify the aspect-ratio settings for a given sequence? I've looked through all the obvious sequence properties settings but have never found anything.
I'll just reiterate — it plays back fine within the viewer; only when output does it all go awry.

  • Colored InDesign docs are wrongly being exported as black and white PDFS

    Hello Sirs/Madams,
I am a new user to InDesign.  I use InDesign CS4.
I have an .indd file that I created (simple, just text, nothing else).  I went to Windows -> Swatches and changed the color of the page to dark blue (modifying the RGB).  On screen, it looks EXACTLY like I want it.
But the problem is when I select File -> Export to PDF and I select ANY of the pdf profiles, it prints ONLY in black and white.  I have messed around with many options, including using the File -> Print option (to Adobe Acrobat 8 Professional BTW) and it *still* creates a black and white pdf!!!
What am I doing wrong? Please can you help me?
All I want is that whatever colors I can see on the screen should be in the PDF, including the document/page area, which I set via the Swatches window.  I apologize if its simple enough but please provide a measure of leeway considering I am taking baby steps here...
    Thank you in advance.

The paper swatch is for preview on screen only and is intended to allow you to see how your document will print on colored paper. If you want to print a solid background you'll need to draw a frame and fill it with that color.

  • Color footage exports as black & white

I am using Premiere Pro CS4 on an XP machine.  The footage is color.  When I export the footage it is converted to black and white.  I have tried different export settings, exporting as .mov and .avi.  Why would the footage be converted to B & W?

Nest the track with the garbage matte.
    See it that will help.

  • IPhoto 4.0.3 quicktime export is black in other apps

When I export an album with music as a quicktime movie, it plays fine within quicktime. When I try to open it in something else, e.g. Final Cut Express, the sound is there, but the screen is black: no photos show.
I'm trying to burn a video CD in toast, which wants mpg, not mov files. It also sees just a black screen, and I get a window stating there is no media, and then a codec failure, and toast CTDs.
    I'm using iPhoto 4.0.3 on a G5 iMac running 10.3.9.
Is there a workaround for this export issue? Thanks in advance.

    Geoffrey
    Welcome to Discussions.
I think the problem you are running into is that the QT slideshow movie is not a true movie. It contains photo files, timing info and an audio track. It is not built on individual video "frames".
You can try running it through iMovie. Import it into a new project. When you save this project movie it may work in iDVD.
I think you will get much better information posting your question in the Final Cut Express forum:

  • Export just black with audio - Flash CC

Hello. Hoping someone may be able to help with this issue. I've created a fairly simple animated logo in Flash CC on my Windows 8 computer. It runs only for about 150 frames. I want to export it into a video format so that i can use it for other purposes. So, I go File --> Export --> Export Video, at which point the following dialog box appears:
Then I click "Export" in upper right, and am presented with this dialog box:
OK, so, I hit OK and continue on into Adobe Media Encoder...
Then, no matter what format I choose to export as, I only get a black screen with the audio only. Is this because I do not have Quicktime on my computer, as alerted by that second dialog box that popped up when i hit export? I don't understand the export on here...How come when I first hit File --> Export -->Export video, it named the video with a .mov extension...and in the Media Encoder it again is showing it as an mov extension (mousclick.mov here)...Is that the format it is converting it FROM into another format then of my choosing (from the dropdown which is FLV by default)? It's not going from like the .swf, it has to start as an mov and then go to some other format? Would appreciate some help in understanding this issue so I can export my animation and not have it just be black with sound.
Also, if not having Quicktime installed on my computer IS the issue, it seems there is no quciktime download for windows 8.
    Thanks in advance.
    Nathan

I can export the Flash movie as mov, all the frames are correctly exported.
Could you please give the below information?
    1. Which version of Adobe Media encoder is launching when invoke media encoder from Flash CC.  You can invoke the Adobe Media encoder File > import > video > Press "launch media encoder” button in select video dialog
    2. Which are the Adobe software’s installed in your system (Video software’s ...... after effects premiere etc...)
3 Create one small motion tween in timeline and export as movie > Check whether the movie is exported correctly
    4. Flash version number,  Help  > About Flash
It would be great if you can share the files.

  • FCP7 export problems - black frames and text irregularities

I'm on FCP 7.0.3 and have recently started editing stuff from my new Panasonic HDC-HS900.
I started a small project just to get to grips with the new workflow and realised that I had made the mistake of trying to import .mts files. However, I found a plugin from Panasonic's website which allows this but editing with the imported files is a nightmare because FCP starts running so slowly that it is impossible to make any kind of precise edits - the scrubber bar jumps all over the place and moving it forward one frame with the arrow keys takes about three seconds.
So, I realised my mistake and having discovered that using ClipWrap circumvents all these problems, I devised a new workflow and resolved to stick to it.
The only problem is that I showed the test edit to my girlfriend and her parents and despite it being full of bad stuff (I mean very rough edits caused by the slowness and audio problems that I couldn't be bothered sorting out also because the process was so frustratingly slow), they all liked it. So, whilst I would like to consign this experimental disaster to the bin, I need to at least iron out some of the problems so that I can give my girlfriend a copy which does not look quite so awful.
So, after labouring through this excruciatingly slow process, I try to export the finished thing only to find that the opening ten seconds, where I have used a slow motion sequence (which, ironically, is not an .mts file - it's a 10s .mov file I exported from FCP in order to convert it from 50p to 25p slow motion without losing frames) and a bit of text which dissolves in and out, there are a few single black frames and the text disappears momentarily several times.
Everything else is fine (apart from the awful edits!).
Having now left FCP to render the whole sequence, I managed to inspect it frame by fram much quicker and on the timeline it looks exactly as it should - the edit itself couldn't be much simpler; two layers - one text, one .mov file. dissolve the text in for one second, two seconds later dissolve in the .mov then a virtual reverse process. What could possibly go wrong?
Anyway, I have deleted all the render files and I am currently waiting for the sequence to re-render - estimated time: two hours.
All I want to do is wrap this junk up so that I can start a proper project.

I'll have to respond in an unordered fashion, just to try to make sense in my reply.
I was using ProRes 422 HQ because I found three options in ClipWrap and had to make a quick decision based on two minutes research and having found by trying it that 422 HQ files were only about 25% bigger than 422 files, I figured I had nothing to lose - especially as the workflow I WILL BE employing does not require permanent storage of the files and I now have 1TB external space for media archive storage and over 600GB internal space for ongoing projects. I might as well use the highest quality.
The reason I suspected the rendering files is that they were being used by FCP in the export of the project - evident in the fact that it takes almost three hours to save an unrendered sequence vs about six minutes to export a rendered sequence. Therefore, being unaware of the inherant problem you mention, I think it was reasonable to guess that a forced re-rendering might have sorted it out.
Yes, with 20/20 hindsight, it might have been quicker but, again being unaware of the issue you mention - which I shall have to look into - it seemed like a small problem which ought to have a had a simple answer. But now I know better.
I have, incidentally, discovered that all the dissolves I inserted have very similar problems.
And, to answer your first point last, I have already gone down that path - I'm just waiting for the results.
Could you perhaps point me at some article where I can read about the inherant problems of H.264, please?

  • PAL DVD WS export: why black bars at sides?

I am editing a 1920x1080 EXCAM HD sequence in Premiere Pro CS6.01 on Win7x64.
I want to export to PAL Widescreen DVD.
When I use the PAL WS presets to export from Premiere I get black bars on either side of the MPEG2 DVD footage.
    Why is this?
Both 1920x1080 and PAL WS are 16:9 (aren't they?). So why am I getting the black bars? Shouldn't the PAL DVD footage fill the entire width of the frame?
Any ideas why I get these black bars? And even better, how I can get rid of them?
    Cheers
    Mark

    Why is this?
Before the age of digital video, it was decided by technocrats that what we see in the end product (called the Clean Aperture) would be different from what was there in the original (called the Production Aperture).  They left off some pixels at the side when they made the calculation for the widescreen Pixel Aspect Ratio.  That process has unfortunately carried over onto digital video, and we're still using that same old analog PAR, instead of what we should be using when you calculate it for the entire frame.  This results in the black bars you see.
In CS6, this is easily overcome by selecting Scale to Fill in the Export settings.

  • Export adds black space to front of quicktime video

I have an iMovie I wanted to include on an existing web page so I exported it, selecting Quicktime and Export for Web. But when I view the movie in Quicktime, the first 6 seconds are a black screen!
Thinking I did not have the starting position right, I placed the start bar a few seconds into the clip and tried again. Again, 6 seconds of black, then the movie started where I indicated.
What setting am I missing? I've gone thru various preferences but cannot find anything. Why would I get this black space???

    -----200901
    -----200902
    2010
    -----201001
    -----201002
You can make use of column properties->Horizontal Alignment = Right and Vertical Alignment=Top, But you have multiple requests in your report. The approach is to differentiate different levels and apply conditional formatting. Try this approach,
    1. Click on the combined request so that you can see "Add Result column" option in the left pane
    2. Click on "Add Result Column", in the column formula type in your time dimension column (if the column is in first posiiton type saw_0)
3.Again Click on "Add Result Column" , in the column formula enter : case when LENGTH(saw_0) > 5 then 2 else 1 end
Here LENGTH(saw_0) > 5 will return only month records (i.e)200901,200902 etc
4.Now click on column properties of the new column added in step2, goto conditional formatting->Add Condition ->Select the column added in step 3 ->
    Case when LENGTH(saw_0) > 5 then 2 else 1 end = 2 then format -> Horizontal Alignment = Right and Vertical Alignment=Top
This will indent the month column to right. This will work when exported to pdf.

  • Exporting trouble/black flashes

I am editing on a MacBook Pro with Premiere Pro CC. The video looks fine in my editing window. However, once I export the video I see occasional brief flashes of black. Why am I getting the black and how can I get rid of it?
    I am exporting a 1440x1080p video to a 720p video.

AVI is not a supported wrapper in FCP (and who knows what's the codec)
You probably should convert the material to an natively editable format before you bring it in to FCP. Mpeg Streamclip is a good app for this purpose. What format you convert to depends on the size and framerate of the original media.
