ABAP mapping
ABAP mappings run on ABAP Stack and are developed in the ABAP workbench of the Integration Server.
You normally do not need to use the ABAP mappings and is preferable for someone with ABAP programming background. I should say JAVA functions would suffice any complex scenarios.

Steps required for developing XSLT Mapping
u2022 Create a source data type and a target data type
u2022 Create Message types for the source and target data types.
u2022 Create Message Interfaces includes Inbound Message interface and Outbound Message interface.
u2022 XSLT Mapping does not require creation of Message mapping, so donu2019t create any Message mapping.
u2022 Create an .XSL file which converts source data type into target data type.
u2022 Zip that .xsl file and import it into Integration Repository under Imported Archives.
u2022 In Interface Mapping choose mapping program as XSL and specify this zip program. (Through search help you will get XSL Mapping programs that you imported under Imported Archives, select your corresponding XSL Program)
u2022 Test this mapping program by navigating to Test tab.
By having look at above steps you can easily find out that this mapping is no where different from other mapping programs, here the challenging lies in creating an XSLT file. If you spend couple of minutes in studying XPATH tutorial you would be in ideal position to create an XSL Transformation (.xsl extension).
If you still find difficulties in generating XSL Transformation, then you can make use of a tool u201CAltova MapForceu201D which will create XSL file for you.
Steps for creating XSL file using this tool:
1. Open the Alto MapForce, import the source .xml and .xsd file in it
2. Similarly import the target .xml and .xsd in MapForce.
3. These two data files should match with source and target data types in Integration Repository.
4. Complete the graphical mapping using extensive list of XSLT functions available there.
5. Save the mapping file.
6. Click the XSLT tab. You will have the entire xslt logic there.
7. Copy that content and save it as .xsl file.
8. Zip above .xsl file and import the same into IR under Imported Archives.

There is no hard and fast rule for using the mapping techniques.
Graphical Mapping is used for simple mapping cases. When, the logic for your mapping is simple and straight forward and it does not involve any complex logic.
Java and XSLT mapping are used when graphical mapping cannot help you and you have multilevel hierarchy structure data.
When the choice is between Java and XSLT, XSLT is simpler than java mapping and easier. But, it has its drawbacks. One among them being that you cannot use Java APIs and Classes in it. There might be cases in your mapping when you will have to perform something like a properties file look up or a DB lookup, such scenarios are not possible in XSLT and so, when you want to use some specific Java API's you will have to go for Java Mapping.
Java Mapping uses 2 types of parsers. DOM and SAX. DOM is easier to use with lots of classes to help you create nodes and elements, but, DOM is very processor intensive.
SAX parser is something that parses your XML one after the other, and so is not processor intensive. But, it is not exactly easy to develop either.
To know more about each of them please go thru the following links. And if you ask me your which is better, it depends basically on the scenario you implementing and the complexity involved. Anyways please go thru the following links:

Performance issue: Java and XSLT

I have a performance issue concerning Java and XSLT: my goal is to transform an xml file (source.xml)
by using a given xsl file (transformation.xsl). As result I would like to get a String object, in which the result
of the transformation (html-code) is in, so that I can display it in a browser. The problem is the long time
it takes for the code below to run through.

xmlSource = new StreamSource(xml);
xslt = new File("C:\\transformation.xsl");
StreamSource xsltSource = new StreamSource(xslt);
TransformerFactory transFact = TransformerFactory.newInstance();
trans = transFact.newTransformer(xsltSource);
StringWriter stringWriter = new StringWriter();
StreamResult streamResult = new StreamResult(stringWriter);
trans.transform(xmlSource, streamResult);
String output = stringWriter.toString();
stringWriter.close();
Before, I made the same transformation in an xml development environment, named Cooktop
(see http://xmlcooktop.com/). The transformation took about 2 seconds. With the code above in Java it
takes about 20 seconds.
Is there a way to make the transformation in Java faster?

I haven't tried it but the if you can use java 6, you could try the new stax (StAX) with the XML stream loading..
Take a look at:

Then, you could cache the xslt in templates:

Transformer transformer = templates.newTransformer();
(here you could probobly also cache the Transformer object but I think it's it's not thread safe so it's a little tricker..)
StreamResult result = new StreamResult( System.out );
transformer.transform(xmlSource, result);
And, don't transform your result to a string, use a Stream or something, then the transformer could start pumping out html while working, and if you get a out of memory error it looks like you have a pretty big xml file...
If you use jsp you could try the build in jsp taglib for xml which I think is rather good and they have support for varReader which implements the StreamSource iirc.

Each mapping has its own adavantages and disadvantages. XSLT is one type of mapping that Xi supports. XSLT mapping also do have certain advantages like if you need a formatted output like HTML in XSLT it would be easy to implement... XSLT is a W3C standard so if also works in any other integration s/w other than XI so it is portable
prefer XSLT Mappings over Graphical mappings, since it's easier to use. One other big advantage of using XSLT mapping not mention, atleast I think, is that changes to XSD's loses all mappings with graphical mappings but with XSLT's you just add the field changed or added, instead of starting over(which you will have to do if you re-import your XSD)...
XSLT is made for mapping XML to HTML or XML to XML. In the XI environment there are different mappings options availiable e.g: graphical (message) mapping, XSLT, Java , ABAP.
XSLT is, compared to the other techniques, easy to learn and good to enhance. It has a worse performance than the other techniques.
Usually it is the decision of the developer which mapping to choose looking at the different aspects of the requirement like message size, complexity of mapping and so on.

UDF's and XSLT Mapping

     I am very much confused when to use UDF's and when to use XSLT etc. Please make me to understand with good examples.

UDF's are user defined functions are of two types,simple UDF which takes in one input and gives out one output and the second one is advanced UDF where in u can access more than one fields,and the result is passed on to ResultList.
UDF can be used in graphical mapping depends upon the requirement.
1) If u wanted to do manuplication in data which can not be done by using the standared XI function that time we go for UDF.
2) For doing Lookup we write the code in UDF and pass the value to R3 system.
3) If u need to compare the input value and pass the other value based on comparision that time can go for UDF.
There are many different requirement for which we can go ahead with UDF.
What is XSLT:
XSLT stands for EXtensible Stylesheet Language Transformations. It is an XML based language for transforming XML documents into any other formats suitable for browser to display, on the basis of set of well-defined rules.
It can be used to transform
     XML to XML - From one XML data format to another
     XML to Text
     XML to HTML/XHTML
     XML to PDF
A few example cases in which an XSLT mapping can be used:-
     When the required output is other than XML like Text, Html or XHTML (html displayed as XML )
     When default namespace coming from graphical mapping is not required or is to be changed as per requirements.
     When data is to be filtered based on certain fields (considering File as source)
     When data is to be sorted based on certain field (considering File as source)
     When data is to be grouped based on certain field (considering File as source).
Advantages of using XSLT mapping
     XSLT program itself defines its own target structure.
     XSLT programs can be imported into SAP XI. Message mapping step can be avoided. One can directly go for interface mapping once message interfaces are created and mapping is imported.
     XSLT provides use of number of standard XPath functions that can replaces graphical mapping involving user defined java functions easily.
     File content conversion at receiver side can be avoided in case of text or html output.
     Multiple occurrences of node within tree (source XML) can be handled easily.
     XSLT can be used in combination with graphical mapping.
     Multi-mapping is also possible using xslt.
     XSLT can be used with ABAP and JAVA Extensions.
But at the same XSLT has the disadvantages also.

DOCTYPE and xslt mapping

Hi All,
I have an XSLT mapping. I have only now found out that I need to include a
<i><!DOCTYPE Order SYSTEM "XCBL3.0.dtd"></i> tag on the second line of the xml I am sending via HTTP. This causes the XSLT mapping to fail in XI. From reading other threads, I understand there is a limitation on the XI xslt parser with "DOCTYPE" tags.
I have tried a workaround by invoking a custom java program in my xslt mapping to insert the doctype but this gets sent out via HTTP as:
<!DOCTYPE Order SYSTEM "XCBL3.0.dtd">
Is there any other workaround I could do without having to completely rewrite my mapping into a Java mapping as mentioned in another thread?
Please Help!!

In your xslt mapping place the following line before the top level element is written
<xsl:text disable-output-escaping="yes"><!DOCTYPE Order SYSTEM "XCBL3.0.dtd"></xsl:text>

Preview installation with ABAP, JAVA and EP

Hello all
I repost this topic to mark with the "question star".
I been inactive in the sneak preview area for a few month and I see here in SDN that a lot of new software is ready for download.
I have also read some of the postings from this forum, but I'm not sure what I need to have an installation with both ABAP, JAVA en EP.
Can anyone verify that I need:
1 server for the WAS 6.20 for ABAP
1 server for SAP Enterprise Portal 6.0 SP4 NetWeaver Stack 2 Developer Workplace Sneak Preview for JAVA and EP.
And that I can join the 2 systems via rfc or connectors.
Is it also possible to get a Sneak Preview to Web Dynpro (or is it included in the above) ?

The combined ABAP and JAVA stack Web AS doesn't support installation of EP on top.
If you want the features of both ABAP and JAVA stack in combination with EP then you will need two WebAS instances, one of those MUST BE Java ONLY!
I suppose you could manually club things together with SDM, but the installation program (SAPinst) in its current form is pretty specific in its checks for a JAVA only Web AS before letting you proceed with EP install.
I have not done a thorough check of the details on why you cannot run EP with Athe ABAP stack, it hasn't been worth the effort of trying....

ABAP API and Key Mapping

Hello there,
I am trying to use the MDM 7.1 ABAP API to access MDM data from within a BI system.
Now I am wondering how to access key mapping for records in the Main Table.
In the Java API there is the RetrieveRecordsKeyMappingsCommand which returns all key mapping information for a list of record IDs. But I cannot find something similar in the ABAP API.
Who knows where to start?

In ABAP API also you can retrieve key mapping of main table records using function 'MDM_API_RETR_CLIENT_SYS_KEYS'.
You will get details of this function in sap library or ABAP API documentation provided by SAP.

Am not sure about XSLT , but , yes graphical mapping is converted into java classes internally and these classes use SAX parsing as well.

XSLT Mapping with Java Enhancement - how to pass Java Errors

I plan to build a XSLT-Mapping and do a RFC-Call out of it. (Client order!) So, I have to call my selfwritten Java class from the XSLT mapping and therefore report Connection errors back to the XSLT mapping (from Java). Is there a definition for the interface between Java and XSLT I can use?

JAVA/ XSLT Mapping to Create a SOAP Envelope

Hello,
I have a File to SOAP scenario and it requires the SOAP message with a custom SOAP envelope. I have searched SDN and could only find that SOAP envelope can be created using a JAVA or XSLT mapping. However, I could not find any blog/ article which will help me understand, with an example, how this is actually coded (creating of a custom SOAP envelope).
Can anyone please point me to a valid blog/ article/ wiki which describes the procedure?
