Exporting highlighted text

Is there any way to export just highlighted text from a PDF?

Satyadev is correct. If this is critical for you, it's theoretically possible using JavaScript on the Adobe Acrobat Professional desktop product but we don't support any of the Annotations JavaScript API. I like the idea of extracting just the highlighted text (without JavaScript). Thanks for the suggestion!

  • Exporting Highlighted Text from a PDF

I'm creating a publication in Indesign, a pdf of each chapter being reviewed by its author, usually highlighting "keywords".
I need to be able to export text "highlighted" in PDFs as a text file.
In Acrobat XI's Comment/Comments List I get a list of the highlighted items, page and time and choose "Export all to Data File..." which creates a smaller ".fdf" file which is of no use as it needs the source file to open.
Creating a "Comment summary" also adds the fact that the document was highlighted but not the content or text that was highlighted.
The PDF documents I have will be reviewed by their authors and have selected words highlighted and added to an index or reference. I need a simple way of allowing them to highlight the "keyword" in the pdf which I can export as a text document.

I think you're more likely to get a good answer over in the Acrobat forums....

  • Is there a function or an addon that allows to export all highlighted text in a document to another document (to create summaries)?

It would be very usefull to be able to export all highlighted text in a document at once

There's a built-in function in Acrobat to create a comment summary (Comments - Comments List - Options - Create Comments Summary).

  • Export comments AND highlighted text?

I know there are several options for exporting comments associated with highlighted text in Adobe Acrobat Pro, but is there a way to export both the comment AND the highlighted text?
    Thanks.

    Hi,
Any of the annotations on the Comment & Markup toolbar (including those not place with defaults but available via "More Tools") can be exported to a separate PDF file.
Use Summarize Comments or use Create PDF of Comments Summary.
In the options dialog that is presented, select 'Comments only'.
    Regarding character strings that have the Highlight annotation "laid" over them;
    Go into Acrobat's Preferences.
    Select the Category "Commenting".
Look over the configuration settings in the 'Pop-Up Open Behavior'
    and the 'Making Comments' panes.
Specifically, select "Copy selected text into Highlight, Cross-Out, and Underline comment pop-ups"
Cross-Out and Underline can be added to the Comment & Markup toolbar via the "More Tools" menu which is available on the default toolbar "ribbon" context menu.

  • Acrobat: summarize highlighted text only in a new document?

    Hi everyone,
I have marked some passages with the "highlight text"-tool in a big pdf file and want to extract only the marked text in a new file. Is this possible?
So far I could only print a new file with information ABOUT the highlighted text, but not the highlighted text itself.
This means I get a file telling me only who highlighted the text and when he did that.
I'm using Adobe Acrobat X, but if you know another program that is able to do this please tell me!
    Thanks for your help!

Although i generally recommend people to user PDFMaker as it provides more features. But if you have already converted the files using PDF Printer, you can also creates tags. Try this:
    1). Open PDF in Acrobat.
    2). Click on Tools-> Accessibility.
    3). Add Tags to document.
4). Save the document and then try the steps I mentioned above. This resolves the issue related to Tags.
You can also do that in MS Word once the PDF is tagged.
1). Open MS Word. Click on Acrobat Tab
2). Click on Acrobat Comments->Import Comments from Acrobat.
3). Now Follow step 6,7,8, and 9 and you are done.
Once you get the comments exported to word you need to change the layout of those using features in word.
    Also, you can try this:
In the comments pane->Under Comments List-> Click on the bubbles and select Hide All Comments. No Click on the same bubble and select Type->Highlight. This will show you only Highlight annotations.
Now Click on Options(Box) and select create comment summary.
Under Comment summary select third radio button-> Comments Only.
For Include option -> Select Only the comments currentyly showing.
    Click Create Comments Summary
This will generate the PDF file with only highlight annotations.
Now you can easily export this to MS Word, Using SaveAs-> Microsoft Word-> Word Documents.
(This might create a problem if the highlighted tag is on a Scan document that is OCRed/ not OCRed. That may slightly change the layout). Otherwise its okey.
    Does that resolve the issue??
I am not sure if i followed the second issue of yours. Is update a problem or adding Acrobat tab in Word?

  • Highlight text on black background?

Does anyone know how to highlight text in acrobat 9 on a black background?

I don't think I understand the question, why would highlighting text on a black background be any different than any other color background?
The only time I have not been able to highlight text in acrobat is when the person who created the document converted all the text to outlines before they exported to PDF or if there are security settings applied.

  • Exporting highligted text to Word (Acrobat 8)

I am trying to capture highlighted text from a PDF file and then export them into Word or Excel. I basically have an "index card software" where I capture relevant text, add a few keywords, and then keep them so I can find parts of literature later on.
I just recently got Adobe Acrobat Professional 8.
I found this post about using Summarize Comments to transfer highlighted text.http://forums.adobe.com/thread/619957
    A few questions
    - can I transfer it to a Word document instead of PDF?
    - can it NOT create a separate page for each page of the document? I'd rather all the highlighted text be on as few pages as possible.
That post also talked about a way to go back to previous PDF files highlighted before choosing that setting. However, I could not figure out how to do this method on files that have ALREADY been highlighted, some in previous versions of Acrobat.
    Thanks for your help

"gkaiseril" and "try67" discuss the possibility of using Acrobat JavaScript to condense comment reports' page count.
A summarize comments report can be sent to a Word file.
Create a Batch Sequence that uses the "Summarize Comments" sequence.
Select this sequence for the new Batch Sequence.
In the Edit Sequence dialog, click the Edit button and edit as appropriate.
Back in the Edit Batch Sequence - <the name of the new batch sequence> dialog -
Configure items 2 and 3 as desired.
Click on the Output Options button.
The Output Options dialog has two panes (File Naming and Output Format).
In the Output Format pane open the drop-down menu associated with "Save File(s) As".
Select RTF or Microsoft Word Document.
(n.b., The save as or export to MS Word document actually gives you an RTF but changes the file extension. If you experience problems with the "doc" then try "rtf" and open that with Word.)
You could add in javascript sequence(s) to the Batch Sequence.
You may have to play with it in regards to the output to DOC or RTF.

  • Highlighting Text & Auto Text Options

I've recently migrated from MS Word to Pages, and I'm determined to make this new relationship work. In Word I used its highlighting text (as with a real highlighter--yellow, pink, etc.) feature, as well as its Auto Text feature, in which I had a number of prescribed, hyperlinked comments. (I'm a teacher, and I would auto text things like, "comma error," which would then be linked to a web page about comma errors.
Can anyone help me discover ways to do both of these in Pages? Also, is there anything for Pages like MS Word's macros?
    Thanks in advance,
    Brad Carpenter

    Welcome to the forums, Brad.
There is no direct analogue in Pages to Word's highlighting feature. However, you can use the Comments feature to add specific comments to a specific piece of text (with the advantage that the comments can be easily hidden, since you are not changing the characteristics of the actual text). Simply select a bit of text and click the Comment icon in the toolbar, or from the Insert menu select "Comment". The selected text will highlight in document, and a comments box will appear to the left of the page, in which you can type whatever you want. In the comments box you can select whatever text you want and make it a hyperlink, by going to the Hyperlink Inspector. Unfortunately, there is not an easy way to automate the creation of a hyperlink, at least as far as I know.
There are plenty of third-party applications that will let you store and add snippets of text easily to any Mac document, including Pages. These include TypeIt4Me, Butler, and even Quicksilver, which has a fanatical following and may be more than you need for this kind of task. I'm sure others here might be able to suggest other apps.
One caution, however: If you intend to be sharing documents with others, they must be using Pages themselves to take advantage of these features. Unless your students are also using Pages, these workarounds won't really help.

  • Is there a way in Pages to show and print all the added "comments?" (those you add by highlighting text)  I'd like students to be able to view my comments on printed version of their papers.

Is there a way in Pages to show and print all the added "comments?" I know word displays the comments off to the side of the document, and those comments can be viewed all at once and printed alongside the document.

There doesn't appear to be a way to print conmments in either Pages or Numbers in the Mavericks versions.

I've been googling and it sounds like I may need to install a dll to export to text. Can anyone confirm that? Thanks much...

  • Export to Text file does not page

Since I applied SP 7 for Crystal 9, when I export a report to a text file it does not page and print the report header on each page. It prints the report header once and one lone continuous page of information. My report was export to text with a page header on each page before I applied the service pack. How do I get it to page in the text export and print the page header on each page?

In 8.5 the default behavior of the export to text was to not paginate. With 9 you have a paginate option when you manually export data to text, however when processing in batch
    Mary Vertz wrote:
    export in the background
you had no such option and it simply defaulted to 60 even for those reports that were suppressing the page header. This causes those text files to have a new-page marker at the start of every 62nd line. This causes the data on that line to be moved 1 character to the right and caused many issue with 8.5 backwards compatibility as this functionality was used for flat file interfaces for instance with the bank for positive pay.
In SP7 they addressed this issue and changed the default behavior to not paginate and enabled a parameter to be passed to control pagination during batch processing.
    If that
    database application
is PeopleSoft, the parameter that needs to be added to the process request is  -LN<number of lines> ex. -LN60
Also note that the CPI can be set via the command line as well. For PeopleSoft it's -CPI<numerical value> which defaults to 12 if it isn't specified.
Unfortunately I do not have the SP7 release notes handy to provide more detail on these options.
    Thanks
    Drew
