Exporting movie to idvd, titles cut off

After searching other users problems w/this issue I've tried switching the movie aspect to 4:3 (standard), no luck. Title/captions that are in the upper left, lower right get cut off. In idvd you can use the tv safe area to help you avoid problems like this, but there isn't one (is there?) in imovie.
ONCE exported to idvd is there a way to shift the captions/titles over, so they are completely visible?
OR do I have to go back to the movie & re do all the captions/titles?
thanks!

  • IPhoto Slideshow to iDVD, then dvd to television: titles cut off.

    iPhoto '08(7.1.5) and iDVD '08(7.0.4)
Created a slideshow in iPhoto using 16:9 format. Exported to iDVD and set dvd to 16:9 format and burned the dvd. The slideshow shows fine on the computer, and the dvd preview also looks fine. When taking the dvd to the television, both a widescreen HD tv and a standard 4:3 tv, the dvd distorts the pictures and the titles on the upper left are cut off. Any suggestions on how to resolve this?
    Thanks
    Kelly

    Kelly:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. I believe you can get the entire slideshow image into the TV Safe area this way:
1 - go to your User/Movies folder and locate the slideshow QT file that iPhoto saved there during the export to iDVD.
2 - open iDVD and, using the "+" button create a slideshow.
3 - drag the QT movie file from the Movies folderinto the slideshow window.
4 - go to the iDVD/Slideshow preference pane and check the "Always scale slides to TV safe area" checkbox.
5 - go to the main menu and delete the movie that was added directly by iPhoto.
This will scale the movie to the TV safe area and keep the titles in the viewable area.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier versions) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. There are versions that are compatible with iPhoto 5, 6, 7 and 8 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
NOTE: The new rebuild option in iPhoto 09 (v. 8.0.2), Rebuild the iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup" makes this tip obsolete.

  • HD import to iMovie okay, but movie is grainy and cut-off on QuickTime

I have Canon HD video camera set to FXP mode.
Imported video looks OK in iMovie, but when I export to QuickTime (I selected BEST quality), movie looks grainy and the image is cropped in the vertical axis (heads cut-off).
By contrast, when I use the Pixela software that came with the camera and import to my PC (boo!), and then export to .mpeg, movie quality is FINE and very sharp.
Am I setting up QuickTime export wrong?
    Any suggestions much appreciated.

  • IDVD menus cut off in 4:3 !

When I use the new "bookshelf" theme in iDVD 6, when displayed on a 4:3 TV, the edges of the menu are cut off, as is a chunk of my text! I have played with the settings on both of my DVD player--both new--and nothing fixes it.
iDVD is set to 4:3 aspect ratio so why the clipping of the edges? Am I missing something?

Unfortunatley iDVD 6 doesnt incorporate different settings and background images for 4:3 and 16:9 so you are left with iDVD interpolating the existing background and coordinates for both. Some themes will make the transition nicely and some won't.
It's the same with all of our themes.

  • When I go to "Share" and export the file is being cut off

I am working on a slideshow when I go to Share the choose Personal Computer, mpeg (wide format), and then when the file is saved it continues to cut off my slideshow. The slideshow is only about 3 minutes long and continues to cut off about :30 seconds, the file size is also small. The photos were converted to RGB and 100dpi.
Any suggestions, would be greatly appreciated. I have completely recreated the file, reduced the size, and nothing has worked.

The most common cause of material on the Timeline being truncated is the WAB (Work Area Bar) being set to less than the full Duration, and then Export Work Area being checked (radio button) in the Export/Share settings dialog. This will happen if one has been using the WAB to limit the area that is Rendered, or similar. This shows the WAB in an adjusted state:
If you have used the WAB, the easiest ways to reset it, or not use it, is to hit the \ [Backslash] key to zoom out to the full Timeline, and then find the little block in the middle of the WAB. Dbl-click on it to expand it completely. Or, in the Export/Share dialog, just click on the Full Project radio button.
Now, another reason for truncation can be limited HDD space. The full Project cannot be Exported/Shared. How much free space do you have on your destination HDD?
Last, you give the dpi of the images, which means nothing in video, but what are the pixel x pixel dimensions of the still images in the SlideShow? That can be very important.
Good luck, and please let us know if anything there helps,
    Hunt

  • Exporting movie for IDVD.

I have been posting some recent problems I'm having with dropped frames when viewing on timelime in FCE 2.0.3. I am now encountering a dialog box "file: I/O error" when I try to export the project as a Quicktime file for use in IDVD. I can find nothing in my manual on what an I/O error is. I can't seem to be able to export the project at all now. I have recently moved up to FCE 2(with Tiger), I was using FCE1 (Panther) before and rarely had problems. Has anyone encountered this problem? Thanks, Dave.

    Tom,
I have tried exporting the project both ways--as self-contained and not self-contained. The timeline is rendered and mixed down. I'm exporting to the same hard drive as FCE is on(I have only one).
I have been having problems playing the project from the timeline as well. It locks up, drops frames, and then continues. It could be that these two problems are somehow related. I recently upgraded to FCE 2 from 1, and upgraded from panther to tiger. Not sure if this has somnethging to do with it. I have been trying to get Apple Help...but they don't know a lot about Final Cut. They say I have enough RAM(1gb).

  • Best Export Format for iDVD to cut down on multiplexing and processing

My processor is what it is and my Ram has been optimized.  Is there some video/audio format/ bit rate that will require less time to convert and process?
I understand that MPEG2, mpeg4, H.264, avi, and all seem to take far too long. I prefer using FCPX and Wondershare to do my converting.
Also whenever I have a random burning error its almost always a “multiplexing error” so maybe if I make the “multiplexing” a little easier maybe I can prevent that headache.
Any thoughts about inve$ting in the fastest burners available?  Isn’t the actual “burn” process the very last step that usually only takes about 2 minutes anyway?
    Thank you in advance!

All depends on what format you need for what purpose. If you need a DVD it'll have to be MPEG-2 or for web use it'll have to be h.264. Other than that there are tons of codecs and containers available. All conversion takes time and to cut down on that time you will need a faster machine.

To avoid burn errors in iDVD create a disk image of your project, test that image file with DVD Player, and, if satisfied, burn with any dedicated disc burning app at no more than 4x to avoid errors.

    See the speed limit above.

  • Border title cut off

I have created a titled border for a panel nested within another panel using:
    panel.setBorder(BorderFactory.createTitledBorder("blahblah");
Unfortunately, the title is longer than the panel, so only part of the title is visible. Is there some way to force the panel size to match the border title, without resorting to absolute positioning? I am using layout managers and the title will be translated into different languages.
    Thanks.

You should know the font for your title, then use FontMetrics (a class) to "measure" the width of the new title. Then you can resize your panel accordingly.
    Cheers

  • Song titles are getting cut off for some reason

I never had this problem before but for some reason the last few songs I have imported and encoded into AAC have the titles cut off after (I guess) a certain amount of characters. This has never been a problem before. Is there a preference that I need to change? I'm running 7.0.1.8 for Windows.
I have many other songs with longer titles than the latest I have uploaded. This is a strange new occurence.
    Thanks in advance

  • Right side of placed images being cut off when exported to PDF

    Hi all,
I'm a beginner still trying to wrap my mind around InDesign and all its features, and have encountered a problem with exporting to PDF. The right-most 1-4 pixels are cut off! I think my problem may be related to what was discussed in this thread:
Indesign, Image problem with PDF export... right side cut-off...
But my issue has nothing to do with Visio. I'm simply placing PNG and JPG files that have already been created and are stored locally on my computer. I found that the only way to solve this is to add a few pixel columns of white/empty space to my images so the right side frame line in the images (created by Adobe Illustrator) appear.
Having to alter my images first before placing them in InDesign is obviously not the best or the correct solution.
Does anyone have any ideas what might be causing this problem and how to correct it? Maybe there's a setting somewhere for image frames that needs to be adjusted?

    Hello again Willi,
    1. I'm using CS6 Version 8.0
    2. Umm... well, I'm VERY embarrassed to say Windows XP (my company is purchasing a new computer for me - I'm using what they have on hand at the moment...).
    3. The graphics are coming from Adobe Illustrator installed on a separate Windows 7 computer. I have a graphic designer colleague who creates images for the installation manuals I put together.
    4. Actually just this morning yet another colleague pointed out that PDF was the better format to use. Yet again I'm VERY embarrassed to say that I used to use Microsoft PowerPoint to create these manuals, and PowerPoint can't import PDF images. I'm trying hard to work with more professional software! That's why my colleague sent me PNG images.
    5. Here's a screenshot below. Remember I'm the guy who asked you that user manuals question in the other thread.
To explain: the first step's image is in PDF format. The image's border appears fine. The second step's image is in PNG format, and yes, not only does the quality appear to be poorer, but even worse is the fact that the right side border is cut off. This is the same for the same image in JPG format. The other steps don't have images - they're just empty image frames with strokes specified in InDesign.
Sure, we can use PDFs from now on, but still, the fact that other formats have this issue is bothersome. In Microsoft PowerPoint this wasn't an issue. Any idea?

  • Events Created in iCal get cut off Below the Screen

For the last few versions, iCal has had a problem with Event windows going below the screen; when this happens, users can no longer see what they are typing in the Event. I was able to duplicate this problem on every current Mac model in an Apple Store, so it is not a hardware issue, or an issue with screen size. Models tested include all MacBook Pros, Macbook, MacBook Air, iMac, Mac Pro with 24" Display, and Mac Pro with 30" Cinema Display. The problem was also reproduced by Apple Support.
I use a MacBook Pro 15" with a display resolution of 1440 x 900. All software is up to date. (Mac OS 10.6.1, and iCal 4.0, Build 1362). Here are the steps to reproduce the problem:
    1) Set the System Preferences for the Dock to 'Automatically hide and show the Dock', to get it out of the way.
    2) In iCal 'Month View', create a new Event in any day on the bottom row of the calendar.
    3) The easiest way to duplicate the problem is to type about 7 lines of text in the 'note' section.
If more than 7 lines total (in Event Description and 'note' sections) are entered, the bottom of the Event pop-up window goes below the screen and is obscured. This means that if you are typing something in the 'note' section, you cannot see what you are typing. Also, the 'Done' button can no longer be accessed when you are finished.
NOTE: When you leave the Event, then come back to edit it again, the window often moves up, eliminating the cut-off problem, but this does not always happen.
Here are the two problems that need to be fixed in order for the user to be able to view what is being typed, and to access the 'Done' button when finished:
    1) The Event Description window (at the top of the Event) currently will stop moving the bottom down after typing 4 lines, and then begins to scroll upward, in order to save space. However, at this point, the 'Done' button has already disappeared below the screen. This needs to changed so that the 'Done' button never goes below the bottom edge of the screen.
    2) When typing in the 'note' window of the Event, a vertical bar eventually appears on the right, but only after the bottom lines of text have disappeared below the screen. The data ABOVE the note window begins to scroll up, but the bottom area of the note remains obscured, so users cannot see what they are typing. Moving the bar up and down still does not let users see what they are typing below the screen. The 'note' window needs to be changed to scroll like the Event Description window does, and not have the 'Done' button go below the bottom edge of the screen.
NOTE: A similar problem happens in Day View and Week View, when listed Events start going below the bottom edge of the screen. They do not scroll either, and everything past a certain point cannot be viewed. Scrolling would solve this problem as well. In the absence of scrolling, the only way around that problem currently, is to cut Events from that day and paste them into another day. Then you can see the rest of the Events.
So, anyone else out there notice these problems or have an explanation for them?

  • AVI to DVD using iDVD cuts off sides of the movie

I have various avi movies and while trying to burn them to DVD using iDVD I have been experiencing the following problem: The left, right, top and bottom of the movie are cut off (imagine putting two layers of duct tape on you screen making your screen smaller and then watching a movie on it).
I have a widescreen TV and have tried both the widescreen and standard format with little success. The only difference in on the standard version I can see the entire menu (in the wide screen version, oddly enough, the screen is cut off).
Is there something on iDVD I can do to adjust the ratio to shrink the movie to fit the screen, or do I have to format the movie somehow before bringing it into iDVD.
I appreciate any advice or help anyone can offer.

The problem with that is the green screen I get if I add it to the slide show.
That's the first time I've heard of that. Thanks for the feedback. There's are two possible workarounds if you want to try them:
1 - open the movie in Quicktime Player and export as full quality DV and use that in the slideshow.
2 - if you've installed Perian on your Mac uninstall it, save the iDVD project as a disk image and see if the green is still there or not.
There's a third way, with Quicktime Pro and an Applescript, to mask the movie so that it will be in the TV Safe area. If you find you want to try post back.

  • Sides of Keynote presentation cut off when exported to iDVD

    Hi,
I have a keynote presentation with the slides set to 800X600 that I am trying to burn to a DVD. I am able to burn fine but when it plays on my DVD player and CRT Samsung TV, the sides of the slides are cut off so that the first and last letters of many lines are not viewable. I also tried on a friend's TV with the same results The DVD looks fine when playing on my iMac but it's widescreen.
I first tried exporting the keynote presentation as a quicktime movie set to full quality 800X600. The next time I exported to iDVD which first exported to a quicktime movie with a size of 720X540. I thought that would fix it but that presentation also has the sides cut off. The iDVD project is using a standard 4:3 aspect ration. Should I try a widescreen project or won't that make more of the slide disappear. Any help would be much apprecitated.

Your problem is that while on a monitor, you can see the entire picture. Any DVD player connected to a standard television is going to show, at most, 90% of the image...some may only show 80%. This is due to something called Overscan on televisions. To account for this overscan, you have to make sure that as you're creating your presentation, you have nothing near the edges.
A good rule of thumb is to create an area that's 80% of the size of your presentation (in 4:3 resolutions, widescreen, you only have to worry about the right and left) and, as you're creating, keep dropping this shape onto your presentation slides to make sure you're inside it. Then, you'll be pretty sure that even on the worst televisions, all you information will show.
