Exporting movie for IDVD.

I have been posting some recent problems I'm having with dropped frames when viewing on timelime in FCE 2.0.3. I am now encountering a dialog box "file: I/O error" when I try to export the project as a Quicktime file for use in IDVD. I can find nothing in my manual on what an I/O error is. I can't seem to be able to export the project at all now. I have recently moved up to FCE 2(with Tiger), I was using FCE1 (Panther) before and rarely had problems. Has anyone encountered this problem? Thanks, Dave.

Tom,
I have tried exporting the project both ways--as self-contained and not self-contained. The timeline is rendered and mixed down. I'm exporting to the same hard drive as FCE is on(I have only one).
I have been having problems playing the project from the timeline as well. It locks up, drops frames, and then continues. It could be that these two problems are somehow related. I recently upgraded to FCE 2 from 1, and upgraded from panther to tiger. Not sure if this has somnethging to do with it. I have been trying to get Apple Help...but they don't know a lot about Final Cut. They say I have enough RAM(1gb).

  • Nightmares exporting 16:9 movie for iDVD

I keep running into the same problem at the end of my projects. I'm editing in PAL 16:9 in FCE, and everything looks great on screen. I want to export the movie into iDVD. If I use the standard Export-> Quicktime option it keeps ending up in 3:4. This seems to happen with every export I do no matter what options I choose!
I've managed to export it into a DV file win 16:9 format, and it plays in widescreen in QTPro and in funder preview, and this has worked in iDVD, but it doesn't import the chapter markers, which I really want to have. (I am using 16:9 iDVD templates and have checked the project is in 16:9).
I've spent hours today trying to get the movie to export right and work in iDVD and can't get a perfect solution. Can anyone give me the right settings once and for all?!?!
    Thanks

  • Export parameters for iDVD compatibility

    Hi everybody,
I export some keynote presentation with sound capture to quicktime.
When I collected several of those exports, I'd love to create a DVD with iDVD.
When I drop the generated quicktime movies onto iDVD, iDVD will re-encode them to a proper iDVD format for burning.
I noticed that when I use Share->Transfer to... -> iDVD, Keynote generates a quicktime movie that is included in iDVD but that does NOT require a new encoding of the movie.
My question is: Which Keynote quicktime export parameters should I use in Keynote to prevent re-encoding in iDVD? (codec, format, speed, throughput, etc. are they all important?)
    Many thanks for your help.

  • Preparing my FCP Quicktime movie for iDVD

Hi out there, can someone please explaine in detail what I have to do to a FCP Quicktime movie to prepare it for iDVD. Its 12 minutes long and 4.8GB. I tried putting it as is into iDVD and burning a DVD and the quality was bad. I presume I have to put it through Compressor?

How did you export the movie in the first place? Did you choose Quicktime Movie or Quicktime Conversion?

  • How do I prepare a FCP Quicktime movie for iDVD?

Hi out there, can someone please explaine in detail what I have to do to a FCP Quicktime movie to prepare it for iDVD. Its 12 minutes long and 4.8GB. I tried putting it as is into iDVD and burning a DVD and the quality was bad. Do I have to put it through Compressor? Or, should I make a different kind of Quicktime movie?

Compressor is a program and you want to use it to convert your movie into an mpeg file and an ac3 file. 2 files to drop into your DVD program. Now, I haven't used iDVD so i don't know what it's asking for but. DVDSP is really easy to use if you just wan tto make a DVD without a menu. this requires an mpeg2 file and ac3. this you can make in compressor. in FCP have your timeline with your sequence in it active. FILE>EXPORT>USING COMPRESSOR. in compressor you can use the DVD 90 minute setting to make these two files. you have to check the manual cause it's different on how to do this with diff versions.
once you have your files drop them in DVD SP asset box then drag them in the timeline. delete the menue blue box right click the green track box, select 'first play' build/burn button at the top and you're on your way.
sorry if this seems confusing, but dvd technology is funky. idvd is great for making easy template menus but if you want to just make a playable dvd wihtout menus, DVD SP is the way to go.

  • 16:9 Export Problem for iDVD

I need to export a project shot on a Panasonic HVX-200 using the P2 cards. For a standard def DVD I down converted the footage from 720 24p to 720x480, 23.98 fps, anamorphic 16:9 sequence. When I export using Quicktime Export I alway get a movie that is squeezed. I have tried the Anamporphic settings. I have tried Custom and selecting anamorphic and neither of these work.
Something to note: In my FCP Canvas window my video doesn't appear with a letterbox in a square frame but it has the correct aspect ratio.
    What am I doing wrong?
    I am using FCP 4.5.
    Thanks for the help.
    cja

Google for a droplet called anamorphicizer. Run the export from FCP thru that and take THAT movie to iDVD.
This is just a script that does this, I think... open the exported file in QT player and Apple-J... then click on presentation tab (I think) and change something on the bottom of that to CLEAN.
Sorry -- I'm trying to do this off the top of my head.

  • What export method for iDVD?

    Hi,
Apologies if this is posted elsewhere, but if it is I can't find it.
I need to use iDVD to author a DVD using a PPro CS3 project. "Why don't you use Encore?" I hear you say. Don't ask. Encore is not an option and I have to submit the DVD to the client today.
My project is PAL HDV 1440x1080i. iDVD does not import MPEG1 or MPEG2, and when I try to export a Quicktime movie using the Media Encoder the quality is consistently terrible. I tried exporting to Microsoft AVI, but it is incredibly slow (estimated time 4 hours for an 8-minute project doesn't sound right).
Please can someone point me in the right direction for correct export settings for a high-quality Quicktime or AVI movie which I can import into iDVD.
    Thanks.

exactly, jim. in my period of temporary insanity trying to get the project submitted in time, i had forgotten about the limitations of dvd.
on another topic altogether i've had a peek at the thread on film look and the dv2film website. nice one. on my project i needed to remove an unintended vignette effect from about 8 clips but the process just seemed too daunting. one of these days...

  • Best export settings for iDVD?

Is there something better than "Share to Large"?
Last night I tried an export to QT as DV ("best quality", 1440x1080, interlaced 4:3) and this produced hideous results when encoded onto the DVD. Very jagged edges. Surprising, since the exported movie was gorgeous before encoding. Results like this may be what causes so many posts here about poor quality. Share to Large gave much, much better results.
I have a 3-disk project I've completed that I'm generally happy with. But I've been wondering if I could tweak up the quality a bit by exporting the iMovie project to something other than the "Share to Large" approach. That produces amazingly good results for the level of compression it achieves (about 20:1).
uh oh: I found another check box that told QT to de-interlace the source video. Not sure what effect this had.

I've finally completed my testing of various exports from iMovie 09 followed by a burn to DVD using iDVD at "Professional". DVD images were evaluated both when viewed on the Mac's DVD player and and finished DVDs were viewed on my Sony blu-ray player and Panasonic plasma TV (720p). I found no example where the disk viewed on the TV was any different than the disk image previewed on the Mac.
Bottom line - From now on I'll be using a QT export H264 at 1440x1080 when time allows, and 720x540 when I need it a little faster. Export to H264 takes much longer than exporting to AIC, but it's worth it in my testing.
In all my testing it was hard to find anything that looked better than the iMovie Share-to-Media Browser-Large option. My SD video footage looked pretty much the same no matter what I did; it was the photos that were more affected by export choice. DV and AIC were clearly inferior, giving pixelated titles, jagged, wiggly edges and so on.
Photos in the hi-rez H264 output, when viewed at double size on the Mac, were clearly sharper than the standard "large" output. I can't swear I can see the resolution difference on my TV (50", viewed from 12 feet), although I can tell the two resolutions are somewhat different when there is panning. I think the slightly sharper hi-res image actually wiggles a bit more.
I've set my blu-ray player sends a 720p image to the plasma (the most it can display). Is my progressive-vs-interlaced setup the reason why I'm getting a better result with H264 than AIC? I thought the latter was the "recommended" choice but it's very poor for my use. On the other hand, most other folks I might give a DVD to are still using old-school equipment. Should I be previewing results on an interlaced system?

  • What's the best settings to Export movie for smaller file sizes?

Hi, I've been working on some helmet cam footage which was taken with Xvidmpeg4.avi and was advised to convert it to dvavi for editing in PrE, this created a huge file to work with, the original footage was 206mb and the finished edited dvavi file is now 1.56gb, what settings can I use to export the movie with a much smaller file size, but hopefully try to retain some quality, to upload to places like Vimeo? I thought I would try to export it in the same as the original footage Xvidmpeg4.avi thinking this might compress it again to something like the 206mb of the original and the original was good quality footage, but PrE just hangs up with a box stating 'Xvid Status (Not Responding)' and when I try to cancel that the whole thing crashes and closes? So when I go to File > Export > Movie, what would be the best settings in:
    General > File Type ?
    Video > Compressor
lots of options under compressor if I select the file type as Microsoft AVI, so I'm guessing something under that would compress it to a smaller file size but what, I could spend all night trying different settings so hoping for some advice?
Or, if I'm completely in the wrong place for the settings and should be doing something else please tell me?
    Thanks, Gav

Thanks for the replies, but to me it's still confusing - simply because there are so many settings, if I go to Share/Personal Computer I'm then presented with a whole load of settings
    NTSC Flash Video
    MPEG
    DVAVI
    Windows Media
    QuickTime
and under each of those is a lot more advanced settings?
I'm guessing I wouldn't use flash or quicktime, so which of the others would I use and what are the advanced settings to use as I can't find anything that is .wmv or .mov
What I've done with other videos that I've exported from PrE as dvavi is then to put it through Windows Movie Maker, Publish Movie, This Computer, then put the settings to Windows Media DVD Quality (PAL) (3.0 Mps) - this seemed to be the only setting that reduced the file size considerably but still had good quality, but it's still about twice the original file size?
This all seems long winded to me, open original file, convert original file, output another file, then output the file again in something else which then results in loss of quality and a larger file than the original? I'm ending up with lots of files, was hoping just to edit in Premiere then export/publish that edited clip and that would be it, then upload to the net.
Is it not possible to just edit my original footage and save it, just like you would with something like a word document, should I be using something else and not Premiere?
    Thanks.

  • Best export format for iDVD

I am compiling a movie in QT Pro from lots of various different iMovie projects. This will then be imported to iDVD. Is the best export setting from iMovie "large", or is there something better I should use?
(I have QT Pro) and have tried QT export with "compressor:none" and the files are great quality but unfeasible large).

I'll be honest .... I'm still shooting MiniDv tape on an old Sony 3 chip TRV900 and importing into iMovie as well as FCP via Firewire. I guess my age is starting to show. I have not yet taken the AVCHD plunge so the advice I can offer you is limited.
Anyway, so essentially you are shooting in AVCHD with the final objective of burning that to a Dvd. Is this correct? Per apple's help menu at least .... this format should work. I'm sure you've read it but I will post it here for reference purposes only.

  • HDV captured create movie for iDVD, lot of jitter and jagged interlace play

Not sure what I'm doing wrong. I wanted to downconvert from HDV capture / edit, and then just create a standard video dvd for normal tv playback. Picture looks like it will be outstanding, but any movement results in horrible jitter and jagged edges. What am I doing wrong?

Wow thanks for quick reply. Apologies I didn't give full info.
I am viewing DVD on TV - well a plasma being played via DVD on PS3.
BUT, DVPRO50 is the only output that shows a "smooth" movie, if I playback on the canvas at 50% the interlace line are gone due to the scaling BUT the movie plays jumpy, so the DVPRo50 method is the only way I can get a smooth pan for example, every other method just gives a jumpy playback on DVD.
iDVD is set to Production quality, when I do a QT movie direct to iDVD without the DVPRO50, the quality is better but the movie is jumpy.
The movie is also 47 minutes long - it's quite big, file produced is about 19GB.
Also I understand about getting HD quality and BlueRay disk etc, but I would expect to get DVD quality from iDVD, doing the DVPRO50 conversion makes it pretty bad. but smooth!
As I said the anooying things is when I exported to MP4 on quicktime at 1080 HD and 18000kbps and 29.97 it also plays smooth for a short bursts of a few seconds (albeit jumping every second to 25 -> 29.97 issues), in 25 fps it's just blurry and jumpy. (playback on PS3)
    Thanks

  • Exporting movie to idvd, titles cut off

After searching other users problems w/this issue I've tried switching the movie aspect to 4:3 (standard), no luck. Title/captions that are in the upper left, lower right get cut off. In idvd you can use the tv safe area to help you avoid problems like this, but there isn't one (is there?) in imovie.
ONCE exported to idvd is there a way to shift the captions/titles over, so they are completely visible?
OR do I have to go back to the movie & re do all the captions/titles?
    thanks!

  • Exporting movie for the web

I have a one minute, forty second trailer for my movie that I want to put on our website. I need to export the trailer from my Final Cut Pro timeline and give it to my web guy in a form that can be used for viewers with Windows Media Player. Any ideas on what the best way is to do this? Thanks!

Analog out from DVD player to your DV device (camcorder, VTR or converter) then Firewire from the DV device to your Mac. In FCP, set device contol to "Non-Controllable Device" and use Capture Now.<<</div>
Sorry ... posted to the wrong question!
To answer your question, if you want to do it on a Mac, you'll need to make the purchase. But if you have a Windows system, you can download the free Windows Media Encoder from Microsoft. Lay the movie off to tape then connect your camcorder or VTR to your Windows system and you can encode in RT for free!

  • Exporting movie for use on Powerpoint - Windows

Does anybody know what settings I should use if I want to use a movie footage on Windows Powerpoint (it is for a friends presentation tomorrow). It is a 8min film. Tried Mpeg 4 - After 30mins it was estimating 500 mins!!! Would another (quicker) encoding format work? Thanks

    Hi Gwyn,
to my knowledge you HAVE to choose the avi container in the QT expert settings... ppt is a bit sensitive with "alien" imports.......
additionally, I would ask your friend, what size/resolution is needed... that makes the files smaller..., don't choose a too high framerate, probably 15fps is enough... ppt needs all resources of the PC, no air left for a smooth video...
500min for a mpeg4 is way too long... you're sure, you didn't incidently choose h264...? that needs indeed DAYS for encoding... , and doesn't work on most PCs......

  • Exporting movie for iTunes - need 8 channels of audio

I'm putting a feature film I edited in FCP X on iTunes for sale/rent. The specs Apple requires are:
    Single QT movie with audio
    ProRes 422 (HQ) codec
    LPCM audio
    16 or 24 bit
    48Khz
    Ch.1 Left (Front)
    Ch.2 Right (Front)
    Ch.3 Center
    Ch.4 LFE
    Ch.5 Left Surround
    Ch.6 Right Surround
Ch.7 & 8 Left Total / Right Total (Stereo Pair)
I looked at the Master File Share preset in FCP X and it only allows 5.1 sound.
So I went into Compressor and looked under the audio options and there is an "SMPTE DTV (L R C LFE Ls Rs Lt Rt)" preset in the pop-up menu. I set up the video with ProRes 422 (HQ) and the Audio with the SMPTE DTV preset, rendered out a range from FCP X and the resulting QT file has no audio. When I render the same range out with another Share preset, I get the audio.
Does anyone have any experience with FCP X and iTunes?
    Thanks!
    Scot

    Hi Scott,
it looks that you might be able to help me one again. I need to create an XDCAM HD422 mov with 8 audio tracks:
    1 Front Left
    2 Front Right
    3 Centre
    4 LFE
    5 Surround left
    6 Surround right
    7 stereo down mix left
    8 stereo down mix right
I have eight mono wav files with all channels above but I am not sure how to create the correct file. In the project properties I can only select 51.1 or stereo. What do I need to do to add the stereo stems and create an XDCAM HD422 mov with 8 audio tracks?
