Exporting to tape - partial movie?

Is it possible to export only a portion of a movie to DV tape in my camera? For example, suppose I have a 2 hour movie that I want to burn to dvd. But I also want to make a digital master tape on 2 one hour mini dv tapes. Can this be done?
I know that I could work around it by temporarily moving an hour's worth of clips to the clip pane. However, in this particular case there are a large number of transitions, color clips and audio clips thus making this exercise difficult if not impossible.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Stehen,
I used to do this before I had a DVCAM deck.
All you have to do is tick output to extrnl device or camera in prefferences, click on the timeline where you want to the playhead to start from, press record on the camera press play in imovie & away you go! I always leave a few seconds before & after the part you want on tape. Make sure you see a picture on the camera LCD to confirm that the signal is getting through.

  • Can't export to tape...HELP PLEASE

    Hi,
I can't seem to export my sequence to tape on my Sony DCR-PC8E PAL camcorder.
I select select File -> export -> export to tape
It says it is ready; starts the camera recording automatically; but the camcorder screen remains blue and no signal is recorded.
The camcorder says 'DV IN' on the screen.
Sending a sequence to tape from windows movie maker works fine.
    Capturing from tape works fine.
Anyone got any ideas on how to make this work?
    Thanks D.

    Solved
You have to change the playback settings in the sequence settings for each sequence.

  • Cannot export to tape from CS4

I have PPro CS4 connected by firewire to either a Canon HV 30 MiniDV camera or a Sony GV-D1000 Mini DV deck.  (I've tried both).
I am trying to export my project to MiniDV tape.  I have succeeded in the past but for some reason now can't do it.
I select "Export to tape" in PPro and all seem to go smoothly, the device being controlled from the PPro device controller and the tape starting to roll.  It's just that no image appears in the screen on the HV30 or GV-D1000, and nothing is recorded.  I am following the instructions for each device regarding recording via this method.  It just seems no data is being sent from the PC to the device.
Options in Edit - Preferences - Device Control are set for the approrpriate PAL system and device.
I can record from the device onto my PC using the same firewire port and cable.
    I'm using Windows 7.
    12Gb RAM
    i7 chip
    ATI Radeon HD5870 graphics card
    Can anyone help, please?

Thanks again, Ann, but as mentioned in my "Dropping frames during capture" thread, this has already been tried and failed.
The following things have been tried and have all failed to prevent, roughly every minute or so during capture or export, two or three seconds of interference which results in lots of dropped frames during capture or a blank screen during export:
    Different firewire cables
Different programs:  PPro CS4; Pr Elements 9, Windows Live Movie Maker
    Capturing to different hard discs
    Capturing to external hard disc
    Closing every non-essential process
    Detaching every non-essential peripheral
Switching off all other electronic devices in that part of the house, phone included
Capturing from/exporting to different devices from different makers
    Changing the firewire driver
I think it's either the firewire driver on Windows 64 bit, (althouhg I've treid changing it) or a problem with the graphics card.
The firewire slot is not in a card by itself, but part of a panel of many slots and plugholes at the back of my PC - USBs, minijacks, firewire etc  I have no further slots available for a separate firewire card.
The only solution I can see is to save the project as a huge AVI file, transfer that to my lap top, make a movie out of it with Windows Live Movie Maker, and export from there.

  • Render and record, export to tape question?

    Hi,
I have finished a ten minute HDV project.
I now want to export to tape. (HDV Sony V1e) When I hit export - tape then hit the render and record box. This then brings up the Export to HDV (transcoding to HDV) box.
The problem I have is that 10 min project trancodes for about ten minutes then just goes back to the render and record dialogue box, without the exporting to tape.
I then tried exporting a smaller chunk (25seconds) and this renders in about three minutes and exports fine!!
So, I think my camera etc is fine.
Why won't my ten min movie render and record?
Sometimes it does give me a low memory warning too. I have set the preference from performance to memory already.
    Please help!
    thanks
    scott

    Hi Scott,
I am having this very same problem.
Did you manage to solve it? If so, how??
I've been trying to figure it out for the past 5 days and it's driving me crazy!!!
I exported a 3 minutes sequence and it exported to tape fine. But when I tried to do the entire film - 55 minutes - it began the 'transcoding' then just stopped and went back to the 'render and record' pop up without any error message or anything.
I am trying to get from CS3 to a Sony HDV deck.
    Thanks,
    Alicia

  • Premiere Pro CS5 Not exportting to tape on TWO different Computers!!! HELP

I had a prior post in january with a new desktop having problems exporting to tape. when it would export a blue screen would come up at random times breaking up the recording. almost like the camera was losing signal with the computer.
Im capturing and exporting using a Canon XHG1 HDV camera.
Both the Laptop (sony vpcf11x) and Desktop (custom with intel sandybridge motherboard) can CAPTURE tapes fine. but export causes problems on BOTH machines.
Both of my computers (a laptop and desktop use the Intel i7 chipset.
I have a Third desktop (gateway something or other) that ive been using Sony Vegas to Export to tape and it WORKS EVERYTIME! with the same Camera and Firewire Cable.
Itried installing Sony Vegas onto the new Desktop to export and I get the SAME problem that I get with Exporting with Premiere.
has anyone else heard of these problems? it is really starting to irritate me. with everything ive done, it has to be something with Adobe. how can i have the same problem on two different computers?

Here are more specific information with my system and settings for you to see. I also included a video of my workflow and showing you what exactly is happening on export.
    Project Settings:
    Capture Format DV
Video Rendering and Playback: Mercury Playback Engine Software only
    Sequence Settings:
    DV NTSC
    29.97 fps
    720x480
    Aspect Ratio 16:9
    30fps Drop-Frame Timecode
    Playback Settings:
Desktop Video Display during playback checked box
    External Device: DV_29.97 720x480i
    Aspect Ration Conversion: Hardware Only
    External Device Audio
Export: external device DV: 29.97 720x480i
Disable video output when in the background is not checked
    Export to tape settings:
    Activate recording device is checked
assemble timecode, delay movie start, and preroll _ frames (none are checked)
abort after _ dropped frames (not checked)
    report dropped frames (not checked)
render audio before video (is checked)
I render out the video to one file (on my desktop).
then import the clip into a new sequence with the above settings.
    file>export>tape>
then it begins recording and drops out like the camera loses signal.
    this is really frusterating.

  • I need to capture while continuing to edit and export to tape, bad idea?

Is it possible to use a different capture program (other than iMovie) to capture DV footage while I continue to do cuts only editing with Final Cut and perhaps even exporting to tape through a different deck on a Dual 2.0 G5 with two hard drives? I understand that I need a program that captures the clip as a QT movie at 48 kHz.
I need to do this in order to justify moving from a linear edit system for news.
What would be the recommended system capable of this?
    17 PowerBook 1.33 GHz   Mac OS X (10.3.7)

Licensing issues prevent us from just dumping our feeds onto one server and then connecting it to all the edit bays with Gigabit. But cost is a big factor for us since we are small. One machine at a time is what we can do since it's all new to us and unproven, really. Prove that it can be faster, then, we can move to put a G5 in every edit bay. Right now the editors can record a feed of several stories and continue to edit in the bay. They order the feed, then hit record and go back to work.
Only one deck isn't a problem, the importing will come from a router going thru a DV bridge. But just as long as we can import while we continue to do some cuts only editing, no effects, no filters while we import. No need to export at the same time, tho that would be cool if ever possible.
Once all the stories are done for the show, we will export, perhaps just play back off FCP during the show, easier for the tape op to just hit the spacebar I guess.
basically the question is, what bare bones capture utility will grab our 48kHz DV footage and give us enough CPU left that it won't crash when we go back to editing?

  • Export to tape in FCP X

Output to tape in FCP X.  I host and produce a broadcast TV program.  I want to move up to FCP X from FCE.  Two of my stations only accept tape.  Has anyone developed a plug-in or work around to export to tape in FCP X?

If you happen to use any of Blackmagic Designs I/O hardware stuff, Intensity, Ultrastudio ... with perhaps a Thunderbolt connection .... you get their software suite as a Bonus.
There you have a "Tool" called Media Express, that has it's own Log & Capture, Playback and Edit to Tape capacities. It understands all ProRes flavors and DV-DVCPRO/HD and even plain H.264.
It comes free with any of the interfaces, you can even download on their support page the "Desktop Video" Suite for a look.
    Just follow their lead ...
BTW : AJA also has something equivalent. Hardware & Software.

  • Export to Tape (Serial) With 708 Captions

    Hi there,
I am using blackmagic Decklink card to output video to a sony HDCAM machine. The recording must have 708 captioning. I have including a MacCaption (MCC) file on the sequence timeline. According to the MacCatpion site this is required for 708 captioning. In the program monitor I have it set to 708 Captionin and everything displays correctly. Upon export to tape there are no visible captions in the SDI output of the Black Magic Decklink card (this is verified using a tektronix scope)
Is there anyone that has succesfully exported 708 captioning to tape?
    Thanks in advance

Were you able to get this resolved? I am having a similar issue. Though I have explored a few other scenarios.
I embedded .mov ProRes HD file with captions and brought it into Premiere with the same results of the 708 don't show up on playback and output via our HD-SDI caption encoder box. Though the one result that did allow for me to output correct captions on 608/708 was when I digitized show that has embedded captions. I put the digitized file in the timeline and output that, and the captions came through. The issue seems to be with both:
    1. Embedding an mov with DTV 608/708 and outputting via HD-SDI
    2. Using an MCC file in the timeline to output to tape via HD-SDI
I have used both Blackmagic extreme 3d and AJA ioXT with VANC turned on with both, and both don't output 708. For clarification the 608 shows up fine when I output, but the 708 are garbled and don't output to tape.

  • Export to tape mt2 files

Please advise how to export to tape in premiere pro 1.5.1 HDV content as it does not recognise the canon HV20.
But, will export to tapre in Premiere Elements 4 without a problem ? ie., after you Import the file into Elements 4 ?
Why cannot Adobe tech answer this problem. Incidentaly Sony Vegas Platinum9 Software does it perfectly and does recognise the canon HV 20 ?

    Hi Harm,
I am of the old school, if nothing is broken don't fix it. ( which means I
probably should have upgraded long ago)but, we do not use multiple cameras.
    Still using a Dell 8400 Dimension 3.2Ghz @800fsb 2Gb Ram & 2 Big hard
drives.Hyper-threading and Multi Processor PC with 128mb ATI Radeon X300 and
it has been working very well for 4-5 years using Premiere Pro 1.5.1
Cineform HD Upgrade, with Panasonic 3ccd video cameras and now Canon HV20 as
well as Canon EOS 5D Mark II. Where the Import of the (Quicktime  mov. files
from this camera when placed on the timeline will not run without rendering.
And if I am working with 30 minutes of 1920 x 1080p  clips it will take 4-5
hours to render, let alone transcode.
But, when it does it's thing, the export to Tape in HD is perfect, so no
    problems there.
My son who is in the Web & Video business has run into the same problem with
his Final Cut Pro editing.( I believe they have put an upograde out now,
    finally).
I am just trying to find a quicker way of doing things. We are basically
photographers so the 5D Mark II  is more than ideal for what we do even
better than the Hasselblads + video.
    Thanks,
    Bob.

  • Help - How to export to tape?

A little background.....I used to a lot of work in iMovie6 HD. When I bought my Mac with iMovie 08, I hated it, so I downloaded iMovie6 again. I then bought Final Cut Express, which is wonderful, but too complex for me. Recently, largely for image stabilization and themes, I bought iMovie 09. I currently use a Sony MiniDV camcorder, which I love.
I'm a young parent with very limited time to edit - so I would now like to do most of my work in iMovie 09 - despite its shortcomings. But when my projects are completed, I would like to export them back to my DV tapes for a good, non hard drive backup. This is also the easiest way to play them on my plasma & saves me having to burn a dvd. Of course, it appears that iMovie 09 does not support this feature.
So what is the best way for me to export to tape from iMovie 09 projects with the smallest amount of quality loss. I imagine I can export it to either FCE or iMovie6 - but am not sure what is best. I also am not up to snuff on settings and how to do it if I do it via quicktime, etc. Any thoughts on the best way to do this would be great.
    MANY THANKS!
    jake

    Hi(Bonjour)!
I would go with the import of your iMovie 9 project into FCE 4.
    See this tutorial:
    http://movies.apple.com/movies/us/apple/finalcutexpress/2007/finalcutexpresstutorial_importfromimovier640-10cie.mov
Once converted into FCE, use the print to tape command.
I don't think that iMovie HD 6 could open iMovie 9 project, but you can ask on iMovie 9 Forum.

  • Why can't I export a Medium/Large movie?

    Hi,
Newbie here - be kind. I'm just joining clips to upload to youtube. I don't need to splice anything. I am having the following issues:
    1. When you put your clips in iMovie, is there a way to display the accompanying file name? Or since I don't need to splice anything, can I just display the clips in a text list format? It would make things a lot easier in terms of makin sure I'm putting the clips in the correct chronological order.
    2. When I try exporting the movie, the option for "Medium" and "Large" is greyed out. All I can export is mini, which is terrible resolution. My source clips are from a Sony HDD camcorder and are 720x480. Any idea why I can't export a higher resolution movie?
Thanks. I really appreciate any help out there.

I am having the same problem!! I have imported files that were .mov (though they were converted from VHS tapes I imported). I am thinking it is because the quality of the VHS was not good enough to export into a medium to large format. (Although when I plug the VCR into the TV the picture is clear) I don't know why it can go in as an mp4 or mov and can't also export as such. I really haven't done much to them except add some transitions and a couple of songs. I am afraid once I put them into iDVD, the picture will be very pixellated, even though it was clear with the original VHS.

  • Exporting to Tape...

    Hello Guys,
I have tried exporting an edited video to tape on my Sony Z5 camera from Adobe Premiere Pro CS5 and cannot see anything on the tape on playback except a Blue screen showing on the camcorder view finder. (This is with the "Aspect Ratio Conversion" set to "Hardware if supported on the Play settings).
However on re-setting the "Aspect Ratio Conversion" to "None", it then shows only still images of the clips of on the camcorder view finder as I move CTI across the timeline but does not export anything.
That is even though on both occasions, "Export to Tape" pop up window showed it was recorded.
Kindly let me know what could be wrong
    Regards,
    Francis.

    Thanks Colin,
It has worked now. That was going to give me a little headache otherwise...I'm sure you probably sensed I'm a newbie to PR CS5.
Anyway, just to find out when one can actually use the option, "Renderer: Mercury Playback Engine GPU Acceleration"?
Also, to check, if the hardware MPE and DV don't go, do the hardware MPE go with HDV? Never mind if the question seems rediculuous...bare with lme.

  • CS3, exporting to tape has problems with more than two video tracks

Well, not quite, but that's the best I could do in the subject line.
I record multiple performances and edit scenes from among them.  At times, this results in three or four video tracks on the timeline at once.  Each track is 100% opaque, so only the top Enabled track shows.  By Enabling or Disabling the various tracks, I can get the sequence I want.
And the sequence plays back fine in the Monitor window.  But when I try to Export it to tape, as soon as I get to such a place, the image hiccups around the same small number of frames (think of the video equivalent of an audio sample).
It's not the number of video tracks.  I can add Image Mattes on a third video track operating on the two below.  I can add any number of titles on different tracks.  They need to render, but then they export to tape perfectly.
What's different about three or more .avi tracks, even when they are Disabled?

Thanks, Jim, for your reply to this and other threads.  (Warning:  I had two other questions — been saving them up for awhile — that I'll post shortly.  It was too late already last night).
    > AVIs need to be "read" from the hard drive and can create a bottleneck depending on certain conditions.
Agreed, but unless there is partial opacity in the top Enabled track, only one track at a time is exported.  And in the cases I cited, the unused clips were Disabled.  No need for Premiere to read them at all.  I assume the state of each clip is part of the Project.
Ah well, I was only curious if I was missing something obvious, or perhaps it was a known bug that would be addressed.  Apparently the additional resources needed for tape export push Premiere over some edge.  Remember, I can watch (even Preview) the sequence in the Monitor window without seeing this artifact.
    > Render before exporting to tape is SOP.  Go with that.
Naturally.  And I do.  And if I didn't, Premiere would do it for me automatically before opening the Export to Tape window.
Thanks again.  On to the next thread.

  • How to export to tape

Hi, i have camera panasonic dvpro200, and fcpx, with the FW, I edit my movie and i like to export it to tape thro the fw, but it not work, why

You can't export to tape with FCP X  .  .  .  it just doesn't do it.
The future of video shooting is on non-linear storage devices not linear tapes.
FCP X reflects this fact and caters mainly for such cameras.
We are lucky that Apple has permitted us to even import from a tape camera.

  • Any 3rd Party Application(s) to export to tape?

Heya guys. Hope production has been treating you all well. I'm kind of in a jam here where for some reason both my sony dv decks have stopped working via firewire. I currently need a third party application(if one exists) that can export a ProRes file to DV Tape. I'm about to go through the pain of reinstalling FCS 7, but I've asked a friend to come by with his cam for me to export a program to tape. I reinstalled my OS as a last ditch effort to see if that was the problem, sadly, it wasn't. So I can only conclude that my decks are... swabed.

That's strange then Nick. Almost all my timelines are in a different codec setting. I just figured FCP just plays em back through DV signal which is why all these years I've been able to export my ProRes timeline to mini DV tapes. Premier Pro did it as well...H.264 is another story. Been trying to switch over to FCPX lately so I don't wanna have to reinstall FCP 7 if I don't have to... or Premier for that matter. I don't mind converting the clips to DV but the question still remains, do you guys have any apps to export to tape?
