Extended vs Journaled?  and Upgrading from OS X 10.2.9 to combined 10.2.11

I've purchased a MS Office 2004 which I wish to install on both my G4 and on my MacBook.
The directions say that the Hard drive should be formatted in the default format of Extended HFS+.
Checked both my computers and they say Journaled HFS+.
Is that the same thing or do I have a problem?
Also - I'd like to upgrade both to 10.4.11. Can/Should I do that in both cases from Software Update Combined or is there somewhere on apple's site I can/should download the combination from?
My external hd is not working so I can't back up my G4 and I don't yet have an external hd for my MacBook (I assume I need a separate one for each computer?)
I'm having my G4 external bootable HD checked and if the problem is in the case, the little gizmos it plugs into at one end of the case, can I just purchase a new one and move this hard drive to the new case so I can keep my data?

HFS+ is the same as extended. Journaling is an added feature and it doesn't make a difference in your case. [Mac OS X: About file system journaling|http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107249]

Yes, as long as the connector type inside is the same, e.g. IDE/ATA.
Updating
Certain steps appear to minimize the risk of an update producing problems.
Number one is to make sure you have a clone backup of your computer in case you do need to back out of it again. This is the only guaranteed way of not having to worry about the results of an update.
Some like to boot from their installer discs or an external backup and verify (and if necessary repair) their internal drives as well as drive permissions. This is done with Disk Utility. You can verify a drive while booted from the same drive but sometimes this produces spurious errors. Repairing a drive (if necessary) has to be done while booted from another disk. Permissions repair can, and is probably best, done when booted from your internal drive.

You can also go to the step of booting into safe mode to do the install.

[Safe Boot takes longer than normal startup|http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107394]
I like to download the update onto my computer and install it from there rather than let Software Update do it. I know a few people who had problems with doing the update via software updater found a manual install to work.
Repair permissions again afterward.
It also helps to only install one update at a time and to run the computer for a while to make sure it is behaving well.
The more cautious even like to unplug third party peripherals (see [comment by BDaqua|http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=9040746#9040746]).
Almost all of the above steps (except backup) have been questioned as to necessity because probably many people have done successful updates without doing them. I say they can't hurt, they can very likely do good (especially if your computer isn't regularly maintained), so why not do them to be safe.

I upgraded my iBook G4 from 384MBytes to 640Mbytes and upgraded from Tiger to Leopard.
After a few weeks the HDD failed. I bought a new disk, installed it and trued to install Leopard, but the  install fails reporting "insufficient memory".
I assume the installation requires more memory than the OS actually needs to be able to run.
I need Tiger install CD/DVD so I can install Tiger first and then upgrade to Leopard.

Call Apple Customer Support 1-800-767-2775, provide the Serial Number and specifications of the Mac, and for a reasonable fee, they will supply a replacement set of system discs (if available).
The discs will be for the original version of the OS that was pre-installed when the Mac was manufactured.
You need much more RAM than that.

  • Can I keep BootCamp as is and upgrade from Tiger to Leopard?

Just about to move to Leopard, and wondering if I can just leave my BootCamp as is and will it work with Leopard. I've got BootCamp 1.3 and will upgrade to 1.4 - but then want to install Leopard. OK I'm guessing I can leave it and then install the version of BootCamp which (I believe) comes with Leopard-- and which (I believe) is no longer a "Beta", rather a standard issue version.
    Any comments appreciated.
    Thanks,

    Friday 26 October 2007

I have a problem after upgrading to Leopard.
I was using BC 1.2 as I forgot to update the drivers to the latest version then, before 26th Oct.
I bought and upgraded to Leopard today and whenever I boot into Windows XP, 10 seconds into the XP desktop a small (it doesnt fill up the whole screen) "blue screen of death" pops up in the middle for a split second (not enough time for me to tell what the error msg was) and the system restarts itself.
I have tried thrice so fast and still am not successful in performing tasks in XP. I play games mostly in XP.
    Anyone has encountered this?

  • If I skip Lion and upgrade from Snow Leopard, will there be a price difference?

I know you can upgrade from the most recent Snow Leopard to Mountion Lion. However, I have heard I may get change more if I don't upgrade from Lion first. My question is, is it true?

    No.

  • Extended monitor problem after upgrade from Snow Leopard

Upon upgrading Mac Pro (09) from Snow Leopard, I can only get a black screen on my extended desktop monitor.  I can see the mouse cursor, but nothing else.  I am not using Full Screen.  Any suggestions? The extended monitor is a SyncMaster 943. thanks.

After reading about kernel panics on this machine, I should also report that the MacPro has two Nvidia GT120's.  I have not upgraded the driver manually and have not had a kernel panic (yet).  Just the black screen on actually two extended desktop monitors.

  • Metadevices and Upgrade from Solaris 2.6 to 8

    Hello,
I want upgrade my current Solaris system from 2.6 to 8. My filesystem are mirrored metadevices including root partion. Are there any problems during upgrade? Did anybody recommend to detach metadevices and mirrors?
    Thanks in advance
    Ivette

The wikipedia page on solaris http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solaris_(operating_system) shows the changes in the system as newer versions came out. I'd highly suggest getting a test box and setting up Solaris 10 on it, and getting a feel for the new install and in particular, ZFS. It's been a number of years since I last used 2.6, but Solaris 10 is vastly better in many ways, including stability. With ZFS you also don't have to use fsck. The best features of Solaris 10 are the new ZFS file system, zones, snapshots, and the new services (rather than rc scripts). If you are going to set up Solaris 10, it's best to immediately start with bootable ZFS file systems rather than trying to upgrade your UFS file systems later. Security is also vastly improved over 2.6, as well as not having to use the old OpenWindows. Also find out what changes you'll need to make to have your old apps run, with all the changes in libraries and stuff since then.

  • Can I switch credit cards and upgrade from the "Basic 30 day opt out trial" to the full version?

It seems the free trial does not allow me to create an HTML web form.  To test the HTML web forms I must pay $0.99 for the 30 opt-out trial...
I want to test an HTML web form on FormsCentral for a few weeks to "kick the tires".  But I work for a City government that requires leaping through bureauracratic hurdles to purchase online with a credit card.
So I am considering using my own personal credit card for the trial, and then opting-out.
If my testing goes well and once I get the purchase requisition processed by the City bean counters, I plan to re-enroll using the City P-Card as the credit card.
    Question:
Can I save the HTML web forms created during the 30 day opt-out trial and somehow transfer them into the new Employer funded FormsCentral account?  Or can I somehow reinstate the original account I opted out of, and apply a different credit card for that account?

    Hi;
I'll do my best to answer your questions.
First, the "Free" Formscentral account does allow you to create HTML web forms, that is the basis of the product and the Free level account gives you most of the HTML forms creation tools to explore.  This page goes into more detail of what you get with the Free versus paid plans:  https://www.acrobat.com/formscentral/en/features/compare-plans.html
I'd recommend kicking the tires in the Free account and exploring the list of features you'd get by upgrading.
If you sign up for a "Basic 30 day opt out trial" you should be able to manage your account/subscription information here:
    ) Go to https://www.adobe.com/account/my-products-services.html#MyServicesHeader
) Sign in using the AdobeID for your account
) On this page you should see your FormsCentral subscription listed and it will show how long until it expires and allow you to manage the account and billing information there.
If for whatever reason you needed to create a new account after approval from the bean counters you could share any forms that you created in the original account with the new account and then "Duplicate" the forms, you would lose the original URL to the form (each form would get a new URL when they were duplicated) but the form would be identical and you can duplicate with the responses.  Another option is to "Export design file" from the first account and then import that into the new account.
I hope that answers your questions, feel free to ask follow up.
    Thanks,
    Josh

  • Improvements for Nikon and upgrading from 3.6

I read on another forum that version 4's camera profiles for the Nikon D3 and D700 have improved to prevent the "too bright" problem. Are these profiles available without a full upgrade to version 4? Also, I purchased version 3.4 last summer, and I'm guessing I would have to pay an upgrade fee to move up to version 4. True?

Thanks, Lee. I just got a new PC and did a fresh 3.6 install, so they should be there. I was playing with it last night and didn't quite see the v4 camera profiles. I'll check again. Is there a way to remove/disable the v2/v3 versions so I don't have to sift through them?

  • Migrate to New PC and Upgrade from PSE7 to PSE9 - How do I Restore Catalog?

    Hello,
I recently bought a new PC.  To migrate, I copied all of my data files (including 50GBs of images) to the new PC HDD.  I also performed a full backup of my two PSE7 catalogs I want to migrate.
I installed PSE9 on the new machine.  When I restore from my PSE7 backup file, will it recognize the source file images already present on the HDD and only restore the catalog metadata or will the PSE9 create a new copy resulting in two copies of the same file?
    I appreciate the help.

Apologies for butting into this thread. I have a similar problem. I have just acquired a new PC and I'm trying to migrate my PSE7 program and some 15,000 images into the new PC. Unfortunately I was ignorant of the Elements Backup process and have always simply backed up my image files from Windows Explorer, as with all my other types of data, onto external drives.
I installed PSE7 onto the new desktop and dragged the image folders and contents across from a Windows Explorer window onto the blank PSE Organiser pane. PSE then imported all the images into Organiser but only a small proportion came across with their tags. No categories or sub-categories transferred with the images.
Having realised I'd done things entirely the wrong way I then started to read the Help (typical male - read the instructions AFTER you've screwed up!) I found out how to import the category/sub-category structure and have done that, but it's simply appeared as a list under the heading "Imported Keyword Tags" which isn't tidy. The bigger problem is that most of the images have lost their basic keyword tags and there are way too many to go through and re-tag!
So what's the best way out of this mess? I could perhaps delete the whole catalogue (I have just one) from the new PC's PSE7 (leaving the images still on the hard drive) and do a Back-up in PSE7 on the old PC and then attempt to "restore" this to the new PC - but will this create a second edition of all my images on the new PC's hard drive?
Do I have to go right back to square one and delete the image files from the new PC hard drive and do a full Backup on the old machine and Restore on the new one (having first deleted the Catalogue from the new PC)?

  • How do I purchase and upgrade from 12 to 13?

I have purchased PE 12 and I want to upgrade to PE 13. How do I go about doing that? Thank you.

    Glenn Bailey
Premiere Elements has always been a standalone program.
If you can show proof of owner of an earlier version of Premiere Elements that should make you eligible for discounted pricing "Upgrade" vs "Full". Those terms relate to pricing and to proof of ownership of an earlier version rather than to a fullest of content of the program that you are purchasing.
So, my take on your situation would be that you will need to purchase Premiere Elements 13 Mac.
Just in case note, you cannot open Premiere Elements Windows project files to Premiere Elements Mac and vice versa.
Glad to learn that Premiere Elements 13 is working well in your computer environment.
Please let me know if you need any further information on this.
    Best wishes

  • Consumables and upgrades from LaserJet 6Lse

I have a LaserJet 6Lse that has given many yrs of faithful service.  It needs toner and I'm having difficulty locating some.  Only non-HP products seem to be available online.
How long does HP support their products and how long are consumables generally made available?
If I retire it,  how difficult will it be to  replace it with another  LaserJet with scanner that will work hardwired to a desktop running XP and wirelessly with a laptop with Windows 7?

Consumables should be available for many years. I am suprised that there is none for your model but it is past end of life support and one of the older models out there.
I usually don't recommend third party supplies, but it is your only option here if you don't want a new printer.
There are many new affordable printers which will work wireless and provide years of usage.
You can look at the new models here.
