External Drive Formatting Problems - Please Help!

I formatted an external drive (just a 1gb memory stick, i intend on formatting an external hard drive i have coming in the post in the same way. This is to test that it will work) with 2 partitions.
Half in HFS+ for my storing documents from my intel imac and the other in FAT32 to use as a windows partition to store documents from my windows laptop.
(I know that FAT32 works with both but FAT32 has a 4gb transfer limit and is general untrustworthy - if possible i'd rather format the windows partition in NTFC if possible?)
I'm doing the formatting/partitioning in apples disk utility and it appears everything works fine, my mac detect both partitions as separate drives as its supposed to.
However, when i then insert the drive into my windows laptop it detects the drive and tells me that it needs to be formatted, i say yes... and it formats the whole thing as FAT32, whereas i want half FAT32 (or preferably NTFC) and half HFS+.
I tried formatting half as HFS+ and half as 'free space' (again with apple disk utility) then inserting it into the windows laptop, it asks me to format it and it formats just the HFS+ side into FAT32 and the 'free space' stays that way.
Does anyone have any solutions to this?
Any help would be MUCh appreciated.

In Disk Utility, when you partition (tab) again, click on "Options..." at the bottom, then change it to Master Boot Record so your PC is happy.
MacFuse 2.0 can read, write and create NTFS and other foreign formats.

Disk Utility defaults to GPT and puts small 200MB GUID, adds an EFI partition for each user volume, and those are what probably confuses Windows, especially XP.

Transferring files from iMac to External Drive issues. Please help

I have a 500gb Western Digital external hard-drive. I began using it on a PC, but got a Mac a couple of months ago. There are a couple of problems that I am encountering. First of all, the folders that I had on my external drive (music, movies etc.) are all locked, and no matter what I try on the Mac, I cannot unlock them.
That really did not cause too much of an issue, because I would just drag them onto the drive, and put them in the proper folders when I connected it to a Windows machine.
However, recently when I try to transfer an album from the Mac to the external, I get an error message that says:
The finder cannot complete the operation because some data in "Song/Album.mp3" could not be read or written. (error code -36)
Basically my two questions are how do I unlock the folders on my external drive, and what is causing this error to start all of a sudden?
Any help would be appreciated

Open up Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility. Select your external drive on the left then under the Erase tab select MS-DOS(FAT) as your volume format. Keep in mind that re-formatting your drive will erase all of the data so make sure you have it all backed up on your computer before you re-format.

Hard Drive/Space Problem, please help!

My laptop has been acting strangely since the start of this year. I've had it for five years now & it started popping up "Start up disk is full" message. But I really don't keep a lot of stuff, few pictures, one movie, few family videos & old essays/powerpoints.
But anyways I started cleaning up stuff, but the Available data went from 1.62 GB to 1.4 GB & then slightly higher & now stopped 1.33 GB.
Is this a virus? What should I do?
Any suggestions would help so much. Thank you in advance.

Do yourself a huge favour. Get an external drive and make a back up. Do this immediately because you are in danger of losing everything on your laptop. Your hard drive is already in distress.

Hard drive detection problem - PLEASE HELP!!!!

I'm about at my wits end with this problem. One of my drives crashed over the weekend, and since then the replacement drive never gets detected. When I have the second drive installed, my computer never gets past the "Verifying DMI Pool Data", then says disk boot failure. When I take out the second drive, my computer boots fine. I've tried different jumper settings, thinking maybe i looked at the diagram backwards, disconnecting my DVD drive and putting the hard disk on the secondary IDE, and installing the new drive as the master and installing Windows on it, with the old drive as the slave. Nothing has worked. As soon as I connect a second hard drive, I get a disk boot failure. I've checked the boot priority a hundred times, and it's correct. In case it was a power supply problem, I removed everything except the two hard drives and some RAM, and that didn't fix anything. I'm lost as to where to go from here. My computer works fine without the second drive, but I need the second drive for gaming.
I'm now thinking it may be the motherboard, because a couple things have happened over the last month. First, all of a sudden I got a CMOS checksum error, then about a week and a half ago the onboard NIC died. And when I installed the updated drivers and flashed the BIOS, on restart I received an error message saying something was wrong with the overclocking settings and had been reset to the default values. The problem with that is I never overclock anything.
I'm not even sure the old drive actually crashed anymore. I heard clicking coming from the computer, and when I all of a sudden lost access to the drive, I assumed it crashed. But now that I am unable to get the brand new drive to work, I'm thinking I need to get a new motherboard. I'm trying to avoid that as long as I can though because this one is only 5 months old.
Would a possible solution be to just leave the master on IDE, and buy a SATA drive to use as a second disk? Or does mixing IDE and SATA cause issues?

Does the 2nd HD work then, were you able to boot up and install Windows?
Does BIOS detect it?
Have you tried a new IDE cable?
Make sure that all the pins are properly in and not loose in the molex connector to the HD.
Have you tried using the new drive alone on IDE-1 or 2?
Have you tried clearing CMOS? remove P/S AC cord, press case power button a few times to drain remaining power then clearing CMOS buy way of the jumper.

Seagate External drive formatting problems

I'm having issues with a brand new seagate drive that I've just bought. It's a 750Gb USB 2.0/Firewire drive. It came in the box formatted as MS-DOS. So, I went into disk utility and tried to format it as a Mac-OS (Extended) (Journaled) drive....but, everytime that I try that, the action script at the bottom of the window says something about "such and such drive's partitions are not in incriments of 4k"....then it proceeds to seem to do nothing.....just sit there "thinking" for hours. It never makes any progress in re-formatting the drive. I let it sit for about 6 hours yesterday and it didn't do anything.
So, today, I tried formatting it as a Unix drive....that worked fine. Then, I tried formatting it as a MS-DOS drive, and that worked fine. But I still can't format it as a Mac drive. Any suggestions? Thanks very much.

You need to re-partition the drive.
Basic Hard Drive Preparation
1. Open Disk Utility in the Utilities folder. If this is the only drive in the computer then you will first need to boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. After the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.)
2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Set the number of partitions from the dropdown menu (use 1 partition unless you wish to make more.) Click on the Options button. Select GUID partition scheme for Intel Macs or APM scheme for PPC Macs. Click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled, if supported.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the volume(s) mount on the Desktop.
4. Quit DU or repeat process for other new drives.

Table format problem - Please help

Here is what I am trying to do:
I have a set of documents in xml fomrat following the docbook standard. In these documents there are too types of table. The standard table with its element tag TABLE and an informal table with element tag INFORMALTABLE.
When these are opened and my format file and EDD applied I want the Standard Tables to have a blue shaded header and the Informal Tables to have a grey shaded header. I have created the appropriate table templates. I cannot figure a way via the EDD to specify the table format type that works. When I open an xml and apply the edd and the format all the tables open using the table format that is first in the list.
What can I do to the EDD to achieve my goal?

It is the format that is used when a new table is created, whether the new table is created interactively by the user or by opening an SGML or XML document. Initial table formats do not affect existing tables. The user is free to choose another format if desired.

    R/w rules are not context sensitive so that if you are using a tgroup element within FM, they will not be able to help. The definition of tgroup in your EDD can set an initial table format of Format A if the tgroup is within the table element and Format B if the tgroup is within informaltable. Just make sure you have imported the EDD into the template before opening the XML document. As you've noticed, if you open the XML document and then import the EDD, the tables already exist and their format is not affected.

Hard drive installation problem, please help

I installed a new hard drive and get a prompt:
"No bootable device -- insert boot disk and press any key"
I then insert the Mac OS install disk 1 and press a key and nothing happens -- it stays at the above prompt. What do I need to do?

Try holding the "c" key while booting with the Mac OSX disc already in... I believe that's the key to boot from CD. Maybe it's changed but worth a try.

External HD suddenly "unreadable" - PLEASE HELP!

Im in total panic mode right now, so I'll try and provide all the information exactly as I remember it.
Last night, I wanted to move some things off my 350GB Maxtor (model escapes me at the moment, I'm at work...) to a DVD. The External HD is connected by USB to my iMac G5. iTunes gets all its files off this External. I selected a large video folder, and told it to archive. It didn't appear to be doing anything, so I cancelled and tried again. I put a blank DVD in, and got a 'this disc is unreadable' message. I figured my DVD drive was going (sometimes Ive had problems with the laser error messages), so I tried to eject the disc, and it wouldn't. I stopped trying to archive the video and re-started the computer. The disc went in fine, and I attempted to start archiving the large video folder again. I kept getting an error message saying that it was unable to archive, so I finally gave up and went to bed.
I woke up, and plugged my iPhone in to sync it before I got in the shower. When I got back, my screensaver had froze on an image, and I had to manually turn the computer off and back on. When I turned it on, the External HD never showed up on the desktop. I unplugged the power on the External HD and plugged it back in. I was met with a "This disc is not readable." and the options to Ignore, Cancel or Initialize.
I restarted numerous times, attempted plugging it into all USB ports, same message everywhere. When I hit Initialize, the disc manager showed it recognized the External drive formatted for the Mac - but the title I called the drive wasn't showing up.
If there is ANYTHING anyone can think of that may help me, I would be the most thankful person alive. This drive has YEARS worth of music, movies and personal videos on it. I really am having a hard time believing that all this stuff is GONE from the drive, but I'm at a total loss right now, and any suggestions would just be amazing. Thank you.

Try unplugging and then replugging the drive, and then reset the PRAM. Let us know if this helps,

So i have a X-Fi Fatalty Platnum Champion Ed. and a computer with Windows 7.
I've searched the web and i found many people saying that the card it's working and perfectly compatible so i would like to exclude this option as far as the problems that i'm having.
So, right out of the box i've placed the front panel in with the ribbon cable and the power connected to it, then i connected the other end of the ribbon cable and finally placed the card in one of the PCI slots i have free.
Now, when i start my PC, i don't hear any particolar "beep messages" but nothing will come on the screen, in few words my PC will not boot at all. I can hear the HDD spinning, everything sounds normal except for that "little" problem.
So, i re-did all the connections thinking that maybe i did something wrong, but following the instruction i did exactly as told. So i tried again to power up the computer and i've noticed that the X-Fi logo is lit up (red light) and.. I don't really know if that means something or it's just something aside that doesn't really matter.. But, what is it's The PCI card is broken or there's something else?
I did try to disable the sound card (integrated mobo sound) from the BIOS but that didn't change anything. I did try all the software options but this looks like more of an hardware problem (please correct me if i'm wrong and/or i've missed something).
There's something that popped up in my mind.. the PSU. I noticed that i have a 300W PSU (mm.. low, isn't it's)?and i was wondering if that's enough or i need a more powerful one.. and if that's may be the case for the PCI to not work at all causing all i've already explained above. I mean.. It seems like i've installed a dead peripheral and that's impeding the computer to start up..
I don't know.. I need clarification and help, PLEASE.

Look at the beta thread sticked above but good luck waiting for a new driver. That beta driver has been there since January and although better than the normal driver it is still crap.
All the boot type issues are with the SSD but if you getting in game crashes etc... under windows 8 that is simply that the driver stinks.

Music Server Can't See External Drive Formatted for WIN with Disk Utility.

Is there any reason an external drive formatted for WIN (MS-DOS(FAT)/FAT32 or NTFS w/ NTFS-3G/MacFUSE) with Disk Utility would not work for intended purpose? I have a music server (Bryston BDP-1) that uses an attached USB drive for storage/playback of music and can only read FAT32 or NTFS formatted drives. I've tried both and neither is readable by the BDP-1, yet I have no problem reading/writing to the supplied 2GB Thumb Drive (FAT32), as well as another 2GB Thumb Drive (FAT32). Get Info shows; "FAT32" for all drives formatted as such.
Note: From what I'm told the BDP-1 uses a scaled down version of Linux for it's OS. Isn't that UNIX? Shouldn't it be compatible (Read/Write) with other platforms (i.e, Mac)? Bryston says the reason they use it because it's Open-Source. Does Linux only work FAT32 or NTFS?
I do have Fusion/XP, also access to WIN PC's, but I just hate to use it when I shouldn't have to. It makes no sense why the drive can't be read by the BDP-1 when formatted for WIN under OS X.
And there was one other issue, after the third try to format fro WIN the external drive suddenly began making faint clicking sounds instead of a spinning drive sound only when plugged into BDP-1 USB port. But it works fine when connected to iMac FW.

990fxa gd80 raid 0 problem please help me i am begging you

so i will start with my set up
990fxa dg80 mb
fx 8350 cpu
780ti
8 gig of ram
256 hdd
2x samsung 850 evo
750 hybrid drive
So at this stage all my data is on the 750 hdd and the disk is stored away. my problem started with me buyng 2 mx100 256 ssds . If my bios is set to ide or ahci they work fine i had my windows instaled on 1 of them all woks fine. Once i switch my bios to raid ( before i set up my raid 0) boot up win 7 instalation i do not see any drives ( i know is normal) load the drivers for the raid controler (sb950 for w7 as it says in themanual) and only my 256 hdd shows up but not the ssds . Than i set them up in ld raid 0 same problem . Tryed on another 2 mbs ... 1 same and a gygabite same problem. So i was sure there is a problem with ssds. I got rid of them got 2 new 850 evo 250 gb same problem. please help me i am so desparate i am willing to pay woth body organs for help

I..have a few questions...
1. You set BIOS to the RAID mode, and under that option there's a Board SATA RAID ROM, do you set it as Legacy ROM?
2. Did you enter Ctrl+F to initialize the drives/Delete Array(If they're used SSDs) and create RAID0?
3. Is your Win7 64 bit or 32 bit?
4. I assume it's 64 bit, did you copy the W764 folder for driver loading?

Ok, I have read the sun site and downloaded the JDK and saved it to disk in the C:\ drive.
However I still get the same error so I think I must be very stupid and I think the computer knows that.

My pages is showing error while opening a document in microsoft word format. Please help

While trying to open documents in microsoft word format, pages is showing an error. It is unable to complete the task and is requesting me to reopen pages but then no response. However I am able to work on pages format. Please help.

When you open a Word document in Pages, it is translated into the internal .pages document format — and you are no longer working in the original Word document format. This translation also occurs in reverse when exporting a document back to Word. When you open a Word document in Pages, if it has issues with the translation (missing font characteristics, other issues), it will open a warning dialog box and display these issues for you.
If however, you prefer to always work in the native Word document format, and not risk translation issues, then you should be using MS Word in Office for Mac 2011 with the latest update.

External drive format to be used as iTunes library and media folder

Hi everyone, I want to transffer my iTunes to an external drive, do I need to format my external drive to Extended Journal or will an Appleshare be alright? Thanks!

I only asked because I read that if you transfer you iPhoto Library you need to have your external drive formatted to Extended Journal so I thought that it might be the same for iTunes. And I only read the post after I started to transfer the iTunes to an external drive. Thanks again!
