External drive partitioning problem

while trying to resize partition on my external drive with disk utility I get a message:
Partition failed with the error:
Filesystem resize support required, such as HFS+ with Journaling enabled
Disk format is Mac OS Extended (Journaled) - isn`t it HFS+? Then, what am I doing wrong? It is important to me not to loose my data

Finally solved the mystery. Obviously, it would not be in the Help section, even though I had followed the directions exactly. Once I typed in the Size: 70GB, I then had to click on the left hand grey, partition box. At that moment, the box enlarged and the 70GB did not change in the Size window. How is one supposed to know to do all of that????
Anyway, it worked.
By the way, the Apricon Enclosures came and the setup was extremely easy. Took about 5 minutes and it was a Firewire External Drive. I got very good support, getting answers by email and phone in hours, not days. They are even sending me a cable that was missing. No Problem.
Now, I will work through the SuperDuper program. In corresponding with them, they suggested strongly that I Clone, and not Image the drive.

External Drive Partition Problem

Hello,
I have a 120gig external HD partitioned into three. Two of the partitions mount just fine. However, only recently the 'second partition' does not mount - you should know a couple of weeks ago in order to consolidate my music I changed the settings on the 'second partition' to read-only so that my music would not be copied into that 'second partition'. This is because my music library spans several drives.
However, I have been able to mount it in disk-util and it says it is verified and repaired (nothing wrong). However, the 'second partition' does not show up on the desktop, nor is it 'bolded' in the list along with the other two partitions.
What to do? Any helpful advice is most welcome from anyone???

Yes, I am choosing Mount from the Disk Util. However, when i do, it Mounts, but does not appear on my desktop - therefore I cannot gain access to its contents. I am using itunes - I lock the "second partition" in order to avoid its contents being copied over (consolidated) to another music folder.

Pondini, I beseech thee....Time Machine won't back up external drive partitions

Pondini (or anyone else that would like to help),
I am running Mac OS X 10.7.5. At my edit bay, we utilize a Facilis Terrablock 24D for storage, which connects to our system via fibre cables. Before upgrading to 10.7.5, Time Machine would back up all of our drive partitions on the Terrablock. Since the upgrade, Time Machine still recognizes the drives, we can add or subtract files from the drives, and it appears to make and save the changes, but when Time Machine backs up, it will only back up the local hard drive. No error messages come up. It just does its thing but only for the local HD.
All of the drive partitions are Mac OS Extended Journaled. All of the permissions seem to be in order.
I have contacted Facilis and their technical support claims that they never tested their products with Time Machine (as they sell their own backup equipment) but in theory that it should work.
I'm not sure what other information you might need but please let me know and I'll do my best. I was wondering if anyone else has come across an issue like this? Thank you for your time.

That's quite strange.
TM does that if you try to back up a USB Thumb drive (I've filed a bug report), but this is the first I've heard of it under any other circumstances. Then again, I don't recall a post by anyone trying to back up from a drive connected this way.
If a drive isn't formatted for a Mac (ie, FAT32, ExFat, NTFS, etc), Time Machine cannot back it up, and will list it in gray on the exclusion list (same as the backup drive), and won't let you remove it from the list, so it's clear.
This sounds like a "cousin" of the way it treats a thumb drive, so sure seems like a bug. TM will back up USB, FireWire, and Thunderbolt drives without a problem, if they're formatted right.
If you have any Macs under 90 days old, or covered by AppleCare, a call to them is free, and the best way to get a quick answer (you may have to escalate to a "specialist" however, and it still may take a few days for something unusual). Otherwise it's $50 U.S.
An alternative is to file a Bug Report, per the green box in Reporting a Problem to Apple. That most likely won't get a response for quite a while, though.
Sorry, wish I had a fix!

External Drive Partition, Lost Files

As the title suggests, I made a mistake that "erased" all my files on a backup external hard drive, after splitting a partition in two and installing Mac OS X Leopard on the new partition. I use quotes in "erased" because the data itself is still there, but the access to it isn't anymore. Before thinking about using recovery software and going through the harsh process of churning through hundreds of GB of data to recover files that could be corrupted in the end, I wanted to seek the opinions of more knowledgeable people to see if there are alternative solutions that could be more simple.
Here's my situation and all the steps that lead to my current state. I have a iMac with Core 2 Duo Intel processor, 2.66 GHz, 2 GB of RAM and an internal hard drive of 320 GB, with Mac OS X Leopard (10.5.8) installed. For backup and temporary transfer of files, I use an external USB hard drive, a Seagate FreeAgent with 500 GB (500 billion bytes = 465 GB actually).
I wanted to boot from my external hard drive to do some maintenance on my iMac's hard drive. So I used Disk Utility to split the current partition (the only one) on my external drive. The drive had 465 GB, give or take, with approximately 50GB free. The other partition to be created was 10GB. I know this is the kind of delicate operation that should be done with caution, but Disk Utility was saying explicitly that "this partition will not be erased", refering to the big partition that will become approximately 455 GB, the one that contains all my files. I say to myself, okay, that is safe.
Now, here comes the thing that I'm not 100% sure about. At this point, I don't know if the big partition was already erased. Both partitions (455GB and 10GB) always mounted on the desktop just fine. I was probably just "presuming" that everything went fine.
Then I proceeded to install Mac OS X Leopard from the installation DVD on the small 10GB partition, which went fine. It's only at this moment that I realised that my big partition was empty. Shortly after, I set the permissions of the big partition to read-only, assuming it would minimize further damage.
That's about it. At this point, my first thought was, what exactly just happened? In my mind, playing with one partition should not affect the other ones, but apparently, something did anyway, for a reason that is beyond my knowledge. Right now, I'm still wondering what operation did do the damage, the partition split or the installation of Mac OS X? Why would any of these operations erase the big partition?
And here's another important point to ponder. Before the partition split, my external hard drive was formatted as APM, Apple Partition Map. After the split, or after the Mac OS X installation (which one, I don't know), the partition scheme had changed to GUID. Maybe this is the key to solve the problem.
I know that my data is still intact, at least in most part, and I know that the file structure (B-Tree information, and stuff like that) seems to be intact (completely or partially) as well, because I visualized some sectors of my drive with a tool called iBored, and I recognized some folder and file names.
That's all the details I can provide. Right now, I feel like any low-level operation on my external drive is like defusing a bomb. One little mistake, and boom! So I prefer to do nothing until I can get some advice from others.

I had the EXACT same issue last night.
Today, I downloaded Disk Drill and it is scanning and recovering my lost files from my external hard drive.

I thought I was going to have a heart attack when none of my files showed up on my Finder and I did not have a clue what I was going to do as my hard drive has practically my whole life on there!
As we speak, disk drill is in the process of scanning my hard drive and locating lost files.
Next step is to recover the files..

External drive disconnection problem.

How do you go about keeping external drives connected when the computer goes to sleep? I have eexternal drives connected to both the iMac and Macbook Pro, When they go to sleep, somehow the dirves get disconnected sith "disk not ejected properly" messages. This happened some with Mountain Lion, but all the time with Mavericks. I have Seagate drives on the iMac, and a WD My Passport on the laptop.

I was also facing this problem for a long time.
I tried many ways to get this thing rid off..
In my case i was using a WD external hard disc which was NTFS windows partitioned.
So i was using TUXERA which is a 3rd party app to enable write access with this NTFS Drive.
I simply uninstalled this app, and the disk eject was Successful.

Choosing an External drive partition scheme

I have a 1 TB LaCie drive that I am currently using with a MBR partition scheme. It has two partitions: one for time machine and one for windows.
What I want is to use this drive to hold my time machine back ups in one partition for Lion, which I am about to switch to and install on the iMac internal drive, my windows stuff in one partition, and a third partition in which I would put a clone (CCC) of my current internal drive (Snow Leopard) that I could boot from when desired. This would enable me to run Lion normally from the iMac's internal drive, switch to the windows partition (holding down the option key when powering on) on occasion when I want to work in a windows only app, and using the same option key on power on trick, boot into Snow Leopard when I need to use old, apps that won't run on Lion.
For this, I assume that I should use the GUID partition scheme. Am I right? Is there a better way to accomplish my goal?

Just a cautionary word about putting all your backups on the same drive: hard drives fail - they all do; some sooner than others....... I have several partitions on mine; however, I have three external drives, so everything is backed up x 3 (redundancy is good for backups).
Having said that, I don't run Windows, so I can't help with that part; for an external to be bootable with a Mac, yes, you need GUID partition scheme. It's also a great idea to put a bootable clone of your Snow Leopard install on one just in case - that is the easiest way to revert if a major problem arises. I've heard there are some external drives which cannot boot a Mac, so make sure yours is. And, you may want to have another partition for your new (not yet installed) Lion install...... so I think I just made you run out of available space on your external

External drive partition is recognized but won't mount.

I've searched the support forum and I can't seem to find this problem... MacBook Pro 2.5Ghz Intel Core2Duo. External LaCie 500GB drive. I bought TechTool Pro 5 last week to clean this external drive out and repartition. I did a 7 pass erase, surface scan, and repartitioned the drive. Everything went smoothly and no errors occurred. So, I attempted to change the Icon for one of the partitions. Ever since then, the volume will not mount to the desktop, therefore will is not available in Finder. Using Disk Utility, the volume is there and will verify and checks out without needing repair. Using Tech Tool to rebuild the volume checks out as well. I'm stumped!! Any ideas? I'm sure it's some silly thing I've just never heard of, but I don't have any ideas left in me. Thanks for any info.

In Disk Utility, when you select that volume in the "sidebar", under the "File" menu is the "Mount ..." menu item available? If so, what happens if you invoke it?
I'm not suggesting that you use this approach every time, but it might provide additional information that would help others solve your problem.

Format External Drive Partitioned OSX extended and FAT32

I am new to the concept of partitioning a drive and have found information mentioning that disk utility has a MS-DOS option for partitioning a drive. I do not have this as a drop down choice in my Disk Utility options. I have read that this is format equivalent to FAT32. I would like to partition this drive half OSX extended and half FAT32. How do I get the drop down choice and is this possible.

Thank you Limnos for all your help. Last night I tried again and it worked! I’ not totally sure on what I did right but:
• Both volumes on the new ext. driver were HFS (from my last attempt the other day) so I looked into a simple erase of one partition/volume into a different format, but DU did not offer a way of erasing it into MS-DOS(FAT32). But I think I did a simple HFS erase anyway of the volume I wanted to format to FAT32. There was nothing “in” that volume because this was a new external drive but I figured it could not hurt anything.
• So then, I think I went back to Partition, locked the partition/volume that I wanted to keep in HFS+ for my Mac files, and (re)partitioned the other just erased volume to MS-DOS. I think I did it under the MBR option.
• It worked! Not sure why but my Mac recognized both volumes one as HFS, the other as FAT32. Maybe someone will find this useful some day!!
• Then, I hooked up the drive to my work Dell, the Dell found only the FAT32 drive (as expected), and I executed a short simple easy command I found on ehow.com (search for ‘convert FAT32 to NTFS’) to make that volume NTFS.

Time machine back up failed on my external drive & more problems

I'd be grateful for any help.
I have a G-TECH 1TB external drive (7 months old) and decided to use that with Time machine to back up my files. I hadn't used the drive for about 4 months but it had worked fine the last time I used it. I connected it to Time Machine and a back up failure message of some kind appeared. Since then the drive is unusable... I'm lucky if I can get the drive to mount ("the disk you inserted is not readable by this computer)" yet I can't reformat it - disk utility can't erase or partition it. It throws up a variety of error messages (can't unmount drive & resource busy are a couple) which usually ends with the spinning ball of death. Tonight I spent my hard earned money on Disk Warrior, which appeared to check and rebuild file systems and the drive mount now mounts but I still can't reformat it or use it in any way. Have now spend hours trying to mount and reformat it and it's driving me mad...

Did you let it do that? If not, nothing was changed!
The drive is still under guarantee - can they really fail this quickly?
Sure, a few drives from any production run will be D.O.A, and a few others will fail very quickly, as with nearly any manufactured product.
But you don't know yet whether the drive is bad. If you didn't let DW replace the directory, run it again and do so.
If it's still troublesome, try the other things in my last post before deciding it's the drive.

How do I Install OSX to an External Drive Partition?

I have an external FW800 drive that I've made two partitions on. One partition I want to install OSX to, for external booting; the other partition is just for storage. I'm trying to use the SNL install disk but It's not installing, it just stalls out. I must be doing something wrong.

Is the external drive prepped correctly?
Drive Preparation
1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
Steps 4-6 are optional but should be used on a drive that has never been formatted before, if the format type is not Mac OS Extended, if the partition scheme has been changed, or if a different operating system (not OS X) has been installed on the drive.
When formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer. Complete the OS X installation.
Or you can clone your current system to the partition:
Clone using Restore Option of Disk Utility
Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
Select the destination volume from the left side list.
Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
Check the box labeled Erase destination.
Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the external drive. Source means the internal startup drive.

External Drive Formatting Problems - Please Help!

I formatted an external drive (just a 1gb memory stick, i intend on formatting an external hard drive i have coming in the post in the same way. This is to test that it will work) with 2 partitions.
Half in HFS+ for my storing documents from my intel imac and the other in FAT32 to use as a windows partition to store documents from my windows laptop.
(I know that FAT32 works with both but FAT32 has a 4gb transfer limit and is general untrustworthy - if possible i'd rather format the windows partition in NTFC if possible?)
I'm doing the formatting/partitioning in apples disk utility and it appears everything works fine, my mac detect both partitions as separate drives as its supposed to.
However, when i then insert the drive into my windows laptop it detects the drive and tells me that it needs to be formatted, i say yes... and it formats the whole thing as FAT32, whereas i want half FAT32 (or preferably NTFC) and half HFS+.
I tried formatting half as HFS+ and half as 'free space' (again with apple disk utility) then inserting it into the windows laptop, it asks me to format it and it formats just the HFS+ side into FAT32 and the 'free space' stays that way.
Does anyone have any solutions to this?
Any help would be MUCh appreciated.

In Disk Utility, when you partition (tab) again, click on "Options..." at the bottom, then change it to Master Boot Record so your PC is happy.
MacFuse 2.0 can read, write and create NTFS and other foreign formats.

Disk Utility defaults to GPT and puts small 200MB GUID, adds an EFI partition for each user volume, and those are what probably confuses Windows, especially XP.

External Drive Partitions Corrupt

I have an external hard drive with 3 partitions. Lately, seemingly at random, the partitions are becoming unmountable (usually one per day). Running Disk Utility always repairs the partition without issue. Its very annoying. Any suggestions?

I just noticed that when this happens if I simply unplug the external drive's USB cable and plug it back in, the partitions all mount properly. The only way to mount them without unplugging is to "repair" them.

IMovie 6 Why? audio extract, copy file to external drive, delete problems

Why are these problems occuring in iMovie '06
+the remaining clip, after an audio extract, no longer has audio, and the extraction does not only extract the selected clip, but the whole movie
+copy and paste an iMovie (.iMovieProject) file 10.66G to a 30G external drive results in "error code 1309" and fails to finish copying
+a 10.66G movie where about 99 percent of the clip was deleted still reads as 10.66G even though the clip is only 26 seconds long.

Welcome to iMovie Discussions ..premature posting of question, methinks. (..without, perhaps, having searched for or read any previous discussion of these or similar topics..)
a - This is the iMovie HD (version 5) Discussion ..there's a separate area for iMovie HD 6 ..but I'll still be happy to answer your questions!
1 - When audio is "extracted", the original clip is simply muted, and a copy of the original audio from it is pasted into a separate audio track below the video. Normally, you'd select an individual clip (or clips) from which to extract (Copy) the audio. If nothing specific is selected, then everything may be extracted.
2 - An external drive must be formatted as 'Mac OS Extended' or HFS+ for iMovie to be able to work with files stored there. It may be formatted in PC (Windows) FAT 32 format, and there may be a file size limit in that format which is incompatible with your Mac operating system. See this page of error codes, where "error -1309 fileBoundsErr: file's EOF offset mark or size is too big" ..that means that the End Of File marker is incompatible with what's being copied. Googling will find other info, such as this discussion, which prompts a handy reminder that your external drive must be connected by FireWire, not by USB, for you to be able to edit and play via the external drive: a USB connection isn't consistently fast enough for playing video.
3 - When you delete part of a clip, in iMovie HD (any version) all the rest of the material is still saved, in case you want to Undelete, or make other alterations which need still having access to the original material. [ This is part of the enhanced "non-destructive editing" which was recently introduced into iMovie. In previous versions, when you deleted something, it was irretrievable! ] That's why the full 10.66GB remains. You could 'Share' (Export) just that 26 sec clip to DV, then re-import it as a new clip, and you could then delete the entire original clip, thus regaining the full 10.66GB of space.
So it's not a premature release: it's a considered, robust, thoughtful release, which now incorporates several solid features which make it more reliable than some previous releases.
Once you get to know how - and why - it works the way it does, you may be glad that it does work as it does.
There are still some bugs in it - many to do with "rendering" ..the rewriting of adjusted video, particularly of adjusted still photos within iMovie - but don't judge it just on a quick first glance!
Hope you find it works for you ..it's a great program, I think.

External Drive Reading Problem

So,
I'm transferring files to my Mac using a FreeAgent Drive by SeaGate. I click on the external drive button and I see the files, but when I click on them, they disappear. I view the files on my other machine, they open up with no problem. What gives? I'm assuming that this is a setting problem since they are viewable on the other comp. What gives? Any Settings I need to tweak?

If your Mac were older, it would probably work fine. Before 10.4, the Mac would have treated it as a "foreign" file system and mounted it and read it just fine.
In 10.4, the advent of the Intel Macs meant that you could now boot from Windows-formatted drives, and Windows formats were now "native".
I know the history, but I do not know the implications of Windows formatting. It should be FAT-32, but I don't understand what the Mac is trying to do with it that would make the Icons jump around or disappear.
There is a hint that there may be trouble in this document. It suggests that when you want to copy a bunch of Windows documents, you put them in one Folder on your Windows machine, then copy that one Folder, then open it when it gets to your Mac. I think the key is that the files are hidden in folders, so that exactly which Icon they should have, and where they should be in the window cannot cause confusion.

External drive boot problem

I have a Verbatim USB external drive plugged into my iMac used for backups with time machine. When I start the computer it immediately stops at a blank white screen. If I turn the computer off and unplug the external drive and restart it works fine. Is there anyway to make the computer boot with the external drive plugged in?

Open Sys preferences then Startup disk and select your internal drive and click Restart then again restart from the drop down that Drops Down.
Once you have done that and the system restarts shut it down and connect the external then start it back up. It should now go to the internal drive automatically.
If it doesn't then you have some other problem which may be a hardware problem. Post back with your results.
