External Harddrives disconnecting on their own

Ok, so, I've got this very goofy problem where I have 2 seperate external hard drives that disconnect themselves from the usb all on their own. So basically what happens is I'll be working and then get the error pop up to make sure I eject my external device blah blah blah.... Does any one know what is causing this? is it software or is there something royally messed up with my usb ports?
thanks,
James

I would first contact  Seagate's tech support for a possible solution. If that doesn't prove successful then I would try a different product or consider building your own.
Basic Backup
Get an external drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
Carbon Copy Cloner
Data Backup
Deja Vu
Silver Keeper
Retrospect
Super Flexible File Synchronizer
SuperDuper!
Synchronize Pro! X
Synk Pro
Synk Standard
Tri-Backup
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on backup and restore.  Also read How to Back Up and Restore Your Files.
Although you can buy a complete external drive system, you can also put one together if you are so inclined.  It's relatively easy and only requires a Phillips head screwdriver (typically.)  You can purchase hard drives separately.  This gives you an opportunity to shop for the best prices on a hard drive of your choice.  Reliable brands include Seagate, Hitachi, Western Digital, Toshiba, and Fujitsu.  You can find reviews and benchmarks on many drives at Storage Review.
Enclosures for FireWire and USB are readily available.  You can find only FireWire enclosures, only USB enclosures, and enclosures that feature multiple ports.  I would stress getting enclosures that use the Oxford chipsets especially for Firewire drives (911, 921, 922, for example.)  You can find enclosures at places such as;
Cool Drives
OWC
WiebeTech
Firewire Direct
California Drives
NewEgg
All you need do is remove a case cover, mount the hard drive in the enclosure and connect the cables, then re-attach the case cover.  Usually the only tool required is a small or medium Phillips screwdriver.

  • Firewire drives disconnect on their own

I've tried setting up two different Firewire 800 drives (1 Maxtor MyBook Pro II and two LaCie d2 Quadras). With both the drives aren't recognized right away. I have to reset the bus on the computer first.
Once each was recognized, they would disconnect at from what I can tell are random times, throwing up warnings that disks weren't disconnected properly and that data may have been lost. This happens with minutes of initially connecting to the disk. The disk will reconnect automatically a few minutes later, only to disconnect again in a few minutes.
Both the computer and the LaCie drives have up-to-date firmware. I returned the Maxtor because I thought it was faulty.
    Help. Thanks, Bob

I undid the RAID and things were stable for a few weeks. Then, when I tried to set the screen saver to display pictures from one of my Firewire 800 drives (I have 2, daisy chained), the disconnecting / reconnecting started again.
    Would appreciate any insights.
Here's an excerpt from the system log showing disconnect, reconnect, disconnect:

  • External Harddrives Disconnect Spontaneously

I am quite lost with this bug.
I am using either of two external HD [LaCie Triple 120 GB; WesternDigital My Book Pro 250GB] using either Silverkeeper 1.1.4 or Retrospect 6.1 for backup.
Now, when I connect either of those HD, they will eject themselves spontaneously. I will get a message that I had not correctly removed the drive and some documents or folders could be dammaged, but nil else.
As I am using two different FW800 cables and two different mains power supplies, I feel the bug somehow is with my MacOS 10.4.8 copy.
    Any ideas?
    PowerBook G4 1.25 GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

In summary, the problem seems to lie with the FW400/800 sockets on the right side of my notebook. The same HDs work perfectly when connected via a FW-PCMCIA card on my PB.
The suggested solution would be a mainboard replacement. But I already have a mainboard replacement from Apple when a memory slot went dead after a warranty repair in an Apple certified workshop. As the cost is high and replacing the main board seems technically demanding, I have opted for a permanent FW-PCMCIA BusCard.
    Disappointing but true.

Having issues with my MacBook. Even when the internet is disconnected, apps are still closing and opening on their own. I sometimes do not have control over my cursor.....any suggestions?

There are several possible causes for this issue. Please take each of the following steps that you haven't already tried until it's resolved. Some may not be apply in your case.
    1. Follow the instructions in this support article, and also this one, if applicable. A damaged or defective AC adapter could be the cause, even if it's the right kind.
    2. Open the Bluetooth preference pane in System Preferences and delete all pointing devices other than the trackpad, if applicable. Disconnect any USB pointing devices. By a "pointing device," I mean a peripheral that moves the cursor, such as a trackpad, mouse, trackball, or graphics tablet. A plain keyboard is not a pointing device.
    3. Start up in safe mode and test, preferably without launching any third-party applications. If you don't have the problem in safe mode, but it comes back when you restart as usual, stop here and post your results. Do the same if you can't start in safe mode. If there was no difference in safe mode, go on to the next step.
    4. Reset the System Management Controller.
    5. If you're using a Bluetooth trackpad, investigate potential sources of interference, including USB 3 devices.
    6. A swollen battery in a portable computer can impinge on the trackpad from below and cause erratic behavior. If you have trouble clicking the trackpad, this is likely the reason. The battery must be replaced without delay.
    7. Press down all four corners of the trackpad at once and release. If there's any effect, it's likely to be temporary, and the unit needs to be serviced or replaced.
    8. There's a report that a (possibly defective) Thunderbolt Ethernet adapter can cause the built-in trackpad of a MacBook to  behave erratically. If you're using such an adapter, disconnect it and test.
    9. There's also a report of erratic cursor movements caused by an external display that was connected but not turned on.
    10. If none of the above applies, or if you have another reason to think that your computer is being remotely controlled, remove it from the network by turning off Wi-Fi (or your Wi-Fi access point), disconnecting from a Bluetooth network link, and unplugging the Ethernet cable or USB modem, whichever is applicable. If the cursor movements stop at once, you should suspect an intrusion.
    11. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine and/or external trackpad tested.

  • External Hard Drive Keeps Disconnecting on its own

Ive been working on a rather large project on Final Cut Pro for some time now and my SeaGate 1tb FreeAgent external hard drive im using keeps disconnecting on me, this makes it impossible to export large files because it will disconnect before they have enough time to finish the export. Some times the hard drive will stay connected for almost an hour, but usually it will disconnect at around 30 minutes.
Ive tried setting the Energy Saver setting so neither my computer or my display will go to sleep, ever. Ive checked the  external harddrive itself with disk utility several times and its always fine. Ive tried different cables, unpluging other unused usb and firewire cables, Ive upgraded my ram, just about everything i can find it the forums, and still no luck. I have other hard drives that i use that work fine.  What solutions are out there? Please help.
Im using a Intel Imac 24th 2.16 Core 2 Duo with 2.5 GB of Ram.

I would first contact  Seagate's tech support for a possible solution. If that doesn't prove successful then I would try a different product or consider building your own.

  • Giving users control of their own distribution list control to add or remove external email addresses from their list

We are a Exchange 2010 SP3 shop, we have distribution groups (with over 200 email addresses ) from another email system which has only external email addresses (i.e [email protected] [email protected]  and so on …..)
We want to import these groups into exchange. we called microsoft, they said create mail contacts for each address and put those in a Distribution Group.  I know this will work.
Our goal is to have the user create / maintain / add / remove external their own email addresses  (Not the IT department)
There must be many companies whose requirements match ours. Are there third party tools that would handle creation of distribution list?
Any constructive advice would be greatly appreciated ! THank you

I wouldn't give the ability to create contacts to everyone in the environment because it will become mess at some point of time and IT will have to jump to control it
anyway so why don’t from the start...
I would give this to certain people like Leads or Managers of the groups under certain IT Policy so it will be still under control and people
will think before asking their superior to create them and someone gets responsibility to manage these contacts...

  • Double backup two MacBook Pros each physically connected to their own external disks?

We have two MacBook Pros 17" (an early 2008 and a late 2011) connected by WiFi, both running OSX 10.9.3 and each physically connected to their own My Book external disks.  After I started the first MacBook Pro's backup to add the second MacBook Pro's external disk, I couldn't set up the second MacBook Pro's backup to add the first MacBook Pro's external disk.  Each of these My Book external disks had previously been used for backing up each MacBook Pros.  None of the help pages helped.

On the computer to which the drives are connect enable File Sharing via Sharing preferences. Select the drives you want shared and CTRL- or RIGHT-click then select Get Info from the contextual menu. In the upper pane is a checkbox labeled "Shared." Check the box to enable sharing the device.
On the other computer select Connect to Server from the Finder's Go menu. Click on the Browse button to locate the shared computer. Double-click on the icon which should bring up a login dialog. Log into the admin account of the shared computer using the Registered User button. You will then be prompted for the admin password of the account. Enter it and click on the OK button. This should connect you and provide access to the shared computer and devices connected to it that have been marked as shared.
For more help select Mac Help from the Finder's Help menu and search for "file sharing."

  • I'm having problems with thunderbolt adaptor for seagate 3tb external hdd. faults include drive disconnecting on its own etc

im having problems with a new thunderbolt adaptor bought for seagate ext drive 3tb.
It came with some software which i installed but the drive disconnects on its own etc.

There is a whole lot of bad going on there.
There are problems both drive errors and USB errors.  I don't believe it.
I have a hunch the drive is starving for power.
USB devices are supposed to function all the way down to 4.25V.  Not all do.
USB ports are supposed to be able to deliver 4.25V at the end of the cable at 500mA.  Not all do.
USB 2.0 devices are not supposed to draw more than 100mA unless they negotiate for more.  Some violate that.
USB 2.0 devices are never supposed to draw more than 500mA. Some violate that.  Especially disk drives.
My guess is that your drive is drawing excess current and the voltage drop through the port and cable are dropping you below 4.25; or at least below the voltage that your drive goes "Tango Uniform"[1].   Does your drive have the option for external power?  If so try it.  Following up on wtx's comment;  USB 3.0 is capable of delivering more power.   Also, some drives have used a cable that violates just about every aspect of the USB specification:  A "Y" cable that plugs into two host ports to provide more power to the guest.  I despise this solution with every fiber of my electrical engineering existence; never-the-less, you might try one.

  • Firewire external harddrives mounting issues

I searched and have not found any helpful(to me) info on the problems with firewire harddrives not mounting. Just for the info, I have a 320G dual connection Western Digital my book premium edition external hard drive. as others, it won't mount via firewire, but will vis USB. It doesn't show up in system profiler or Disk Utility either When it's connected via firewire. I had suggestions to disconnect, unplug and shut down the harddrive and the imac. wait several minutes, and restart and reconnect. That did nothing. Should I return this harddrive for another brand? I want to keep it as I picked it up dirt cheap on sale, and with rebates, instant savings, etc. it was only $109. And no I don't want to just use it with USB, I want firewire.

    Hi Tcimac
It is often difficult to determine a users' specific knowledge level after a few posts.
There are folks that come here looking for help that have never had a computer, and if they did, perhaps someone else like a child or grandchild got them up and running and they are left to their own devices when troubleshooting.
I am sure that those to whom that article was directed do not feel like those are simple steps at all and are often very thankful for the document.
Be thankful for what you do know. Do not forget that to some your question may be equally received-

  • Can somebody please please help me! External harddrive not readable due to dumb mistake!

What is quite possibly one of the dumbest decisions i ever made in my life, I disconnected my external harddrive from my imac & plugged it into a laptop that has Windows 7 to trasfer footage from there to my imac more quicker. I clciked an option that allowed me to assign a letter to it to it can be read by the laptop (however, I would of needed to format the harddrive which I thankfully didn't). Please understand that erasing the entire harddrive is NOT an option! I am a filmmaker & I have so many years of work on there, including videos, music, & documents.
When the computer starts up I get hit with "The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer"! I tried Disk Utiity & even though it recognizes the drive's existence, I cannot repair or mount...nor can I access any of the files! I also tried Diskwarrior & got "directory cannot be rebuilt, the file system is unsupported".
If theres anything you guys can do to help me, please do so. My life was on that harddrive & losing it would be the most devistating thing I could ever experience. A movie I finished not too long ago...is also on that harddrive. I'll send you a full video completely thanking you for your help!

Call a professional data recovery service such as DriveSavers. Their services are very expensive, but without backups, you have no choice but to pay whatever they ask.

  • Need Help setting up a Fully-Accessible External Harddrive on Network.

Alright Ladies and Gentlmen of the Apple Support Forums,
I'm fairly new to servers in general - but I thought I'd be able to figure this one out on my own...I guess I was wrong
I am the tech head of a video studio that needs to share a single 12 TB external 3.0 drive on the entire network. I want all to be able to read, write, and delete as easy as possible.
    Here's what I have:
    - 20mb/s UP and 20 mb/s DOWN coming from Northstate into my modem.
    - I have my modem connected to my new Airport Express.
    - I have connected my airport express to my Mac Mini server (new).
    - I also have it connected to a 24 port netgear switch.
    - My switch is connected to about 11 stations across the studio.
    - My LaCie 12TB drive is connected via USB 3.0 to the mac mini and is available to view in the "shared" finder window for all computers. In other words, everyone CAN see it.
    - I have set everyone up with their own username and password to connect to the server. I have set permissions through the server (file sharing) to allow all users to Read & Write to the external Harddrive.
    My problem:
It seems as though any file or folder created by one computer is not accessable by another computer - and vice versa. One user has NO permission to write or copy a file into a folder that another user has created on the external drive.
    My needs:
I really want this to work freely. I want all users to be able to write, read, and delete any file or folder on the External HDD through the network. I don't want to have to set every folder created on the external to sharing or have to manage permissions at all.
Ladies and Gentlemen! What am I doing wrong?!

Underlying the Mac OS is unix. By default when a file or folder is created, it is owned by that user. Other users don't have read/write permissions.
I suggest reading a bit about unix permissions work.
Unix assigns permissions for 3 categories for each file and folder. Self, group, and other (think of other like the permissions you would want a complete stranger to have).
If all your users are members of the same group, you can use unix permissions to allow anyone in the group to have r/w permissions. You'd first need to define a group, and then assign all the users to that group.
Lastly, you'd want to associate all the existing files you already have to that group.

  • External HardDrive Compatible? help!

Hi guys i intend to get an external enclosure and a normal harddrive and convert it to an external harddrive myself. I want to know what harddrive should i get and what would i need to do to make it compatible with both mac and pc? how should i format it to be able to use freely on both windows and mac? thanks!!

    Hello,
Hi thanks for the fantastic replies !! that is all
the info that i will be needing.
You're welcome. Glad you found our answers helpful.
    One last question
mates ! i purchased my Imac G5 just weeks before they
introduced the intel duo processor Imac G5
(Grrrrrrrr) and i was wondering if it is possible to
change the processer to the intel processor?
    Unfortunately, no.
The processor is not the only part that is different. Basically, they are two entirely different computers. The processor you use, determines the rest of the components used in a computer.
So, to use an Intel processor, you also need supporting hardware that recognizes that processor and can work with it. The supporting hardware must be familiar with, and know how to handle, that processors method of moving information around. And, the supporting hardware has to deliver information in a method that is expected by that processor. So, there are a lot of custom chips inside the computer that are specific to the processor being used.
The same is true even in the PC world. If you use an Intel processor, then you pick a chipset and other support chips that work with the Intel processor. If you use an AMD processor, then you pick a chipset and other supporting hardware that will work with the AMD processor.
So, even there you cannot usually swap processors of different brands.
Now, there have been exceptions among 3rd-party main board manufacturers. Some have specifically chosen components that will support any processor in previous years. So, there have been main boards that would support using your choice of AMD, Intel, IBM, Cyrix, etc. processors.
But, those processors all used the same socket style at the time, and were of similar technology.
These days each processor manufacturer is using their own socket type, and their designs are significantly different.
And, in your particular case, the difference between a PowerPC processor and an Intel processor is so significant that you simply cannot make that substitution. The rest of the supporting hardware would have to be changed as well. And, that just isn't possible on your system without starting at the beginning and redesigning the whole logic board again.
So, in your case, you do need to purchase a new computer if you want to move to the Intel processor.
My work requires me to use both windows and Mac so i
intend to upgrade to intel core and install bootcamp.
Any advises for me? will it be extremely expensive??
You could use Virtual PC on your current Mac. But, because it works through emulating the entire PC (including emulating an Intel processor) it works very slowly. It's still quite usable. But, more intensive tasks can take a while to complete. Simple tasks are executed almost as fast as a real PC.
But, if you want to run Windows at full speed, then you'll want a real Intel processor. In that case, it's not necessarily going to be too expensive. It all depends on your budget.
At the base-line, you can get a Mac Mini CoreSolo for around $600 (before upgrades are accounted for). And, the CoreDuo model starts around $800.
But, those will probably "feel" slower than your current system. So, you'll probably want either an iMac CoreDuo or a Mac Pro.
If you want a iMac CoreDuo, I'd wait a little bit for the upcoming improvement in processors and possibly other specs. Apple tends to keep the price pretty consistent. So, you can usually get them starting around $1300 before upgrades (such as memory).
And, if you are on a really tight budget, watch Apple's refurbished site. You can get refurbished Macs a lot cheaper than the new ones. They come with the same warranty, and you can save several hundred dollars.
I saved about $600 on my last refurb purchase. Of course, actual savings will depend on the model you choose, the timing of the purchase, and the specs you need.
I timed my refurb purchase with the introduction of a new model, so I got it a bit cheaper because it was a refurb version of a prior model instead of a refurb of a current model. That will affect the price a little bit.
You can find the refurb site by going to Apple's online store. Then, once it loads, you'll see a red tag in the lower-right of the page that says "Save".
You can also try this link:
    http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/6294000/wo/7C4xZ 73Fpc983ZulJQOjoQ5aF0F/3.0.0.19.1.0.8.7.1.0.1.1
The machines available change by the hour (or minute sometimes). So, if the machine you want isn't there when you look, check back frequently and watch for it to become available. Remember, these are limited to actual supply, so the models available will change as they are sold.
    I hope this helps.

  • Transfer Music to External Harddrive on 9.0

Hello. I'm trying to free up some space on my computer, so I want to transfer my music library onto an external Harddrive. Since I don't have the consolidate option with Itunes 9.0 is there any other way to do it?

You can move, copy, delete, or create new files and folders in your device memory or
on the memory card. If you organise your files into their own folders, it might help you
    find the files in future.
Select Menu > Applications > Gallery.
    Create a new folder
In the folder where you want to create a sub-folder, select Options > Add folder.
Copy or move a file to a folder
Select and hold the file, and from the pop-up menu, select the appropriate option
its handy to also give your memo card a name
If  i have helped at all a click on the white star below would be nice thanks.

  • External harddrive questions

I have a WD My Passport 320 GB for Mac and I just saved a 20 Gb folder to it. In addition, I deleted (command+backspace) a few older folders I had stored there.
The only thing left should be a 20 GB folder. However, when I select Get Info, it says:
Used 54 GB (should say 20)
Available 265 GB (should say about 300)
I have several questions about this:
    1. Why does the file size not update?
    2. How can I make it update? (Does it help if I Securely Empty the trash can?)
    3. Does this mean that only 265 GB is available?
And followup... I went to Disk Utility to consider Erasing the external harddrive and selected Security Option 2: Zero Out Data. Then I went to Erase Free Space and got started but as it was going to take 5 hours I quit the application...
    4. Would this be a good idea and exactly what should I select - have never used DU before...
There is Erase Free Space or just Erase... I can resave my folder again in needed, so I could delete all of it if that's better.
    5. Which security option should I use?
    6. Did I mess up my current folder by briefly getting it started, for 10s or so, and then quitting?
    Any help most welcome!

If the files you trashed were on the WD external, then yes, it will have to be connected to the computer when you empty the Trash. Every drive has its own Trash folder on it, and that folder won't be emptied unless the drive containing it is connected to the computer when you choose the Empty Trash command.
Yes, you should run the Repair Disk command in Disk Utility before you empty the Trash. That will enable DU to make sure all the files on the external drive, including those in the Trash, are correctly identified and their locations on the disk are known accurately before anything is actually deleted from the drive's directory.
Don't erase the drive unless you want to lose the 20GB folder you just copied to it. And if you do want to erase the drive, don't bother with the Write Zeroes option unless you have unusual security requirements or you suspect the drive has hardware problems. The Write Zeroes command can also be run overnight if you do have a good reason for running it.

  • External harddrive for Mac G5

    Hi
I would like to get an external firewire harddrive for my mac G5 any sugestions out there.
    Kindest Regards
    Joe

This reply may not be very popular, but here goes...
I usually watch the Sunday paper for circulars from places like CompUSA, Staples, Office Max, ect. If you look at the sale section, you can normally find Firewire external cases. I have built five of these and the cost has been minimal. The nicest cases, in my opinion, are two Acom Data cases I found at CompUSA for $29.99. They came with Firewire (400) cables too! In these two cases, I mounted a Maxtor Diamondmax 10 300GB drive and a Maxtor Diamondmax 9 200GB drive. So, with these two drives I have almost 500GB of storage. I believe I paid $79.99 (after instant savings and mail-in rebates) for the 300GB drive (at Staples, I believe). So, for $110 I have a 300GB external Firewire drive. The drive is fast and I can boot my machine from it.
My daughter needed a drive for her iMac about 6 months ago. I bought a 40GB Maxtor mechanism for $20 on eBay. I found a Firewird case for $20, also on eBay. I think it cost me less than $5 to ship each item to me. So, for less than $50, she has a 40GB external Firewird drive.
Just last week, my son needed a new drive. Office Depot had a special in their circular on a 100GB Maxtor Diamondmax 10 drive. After all of the rebates, the drive mechanism's cost is $19.95. I found an old Firewire case in the garage and now he has a 100GB external Firewire drive.
If you don't forsee the need to boot from the drive, you could buy a case that only has a USB 2.0 interface. These are actually more readibly available and usually less expensive.
I don't know why more people don't put their own drives together. It's really easy and saves lots of money.
