External table configuration

I am getting the data file as the following format, can I use an external table for this
or is there any other aproach for this to read from Oracle
FIELD_START
col1
col2
col3
FIELD_START
DATA_START
123|1234|4567
ABC|DEFG|HIJKL
MNOP|QERSTUVW|XYZ
DATA_END

Hi,
yes, you may do this with external tables.
I recommed using the file import wizard in owb and sample data.
Use comma seperated format.
You have to skip the first 6 lines.
You have to exclude lines starting with DATA_END.

Carsten.

  • Error on External Serrvice Configuration Page NW 20047s SP10

    Hi All,
I am working on CAF developement. I was trying to develop an CAF application using External Service. I used SAP ECC 5.0 server to import a RFC functional module. It was successfully imported in NWDS. Also it got successfully deployed on the Server NW2004s SP10. But when i opened external service configuration page -> service registery it gave me a null pointer exception.
To solve the problem, i removed the RFC functional module from NWDS and
re-deployed the same application, but the error is still there.
One solution i got is to undeploy the application from the server. After doing this I was able to get the External service configuration page -> service registery without any error. BUT WHEN I DEPLOY THE SAME APPLICATION REMOVING THE RFC THE ERROR IS COMMING AGAIN.
I think there must be some entry on the server which stores the External services imported on the NW 2004s server.
    Please Help. ITS VERY URGENT
    thanks in advance,

  • External Table Security with OBIEE 11G is not working properly.

    Hello Everyone,
we just upgraded for OBIEE from 10G to 11G.
not what we had in 10G for object level and data level security is that we were using "External table" and LDAP Authentication.
Now for User we are capturing Groups in that table, so basically we have Group-level security.
so in that case we are creating Groups in External Table, RPD & Catalog.
Now we upgraded OBIEE to 11G, there we have totally different concept for security.
So here in what we have to do to implement the same concept. because we have created the Application Roles in Admin Console and Groups in Enterprise Manager with same name, and assigned same Groups to same Application Role.
now while applying security in frontend we can catalog groups options too!!! so do we have to create the same groups in catalog too?? and while applying the security to catalog which one do we need to use? "Application Role" OR "Catalog Groups"???
    Thanking You..

In the error it is showing that file expense_categories.csv in SOURCE_LOCATION not found but I am 100% sure that file is very much there.
Is anybody face the same issue?
Do we need to configure something before loading data from a flat file from OWB Client?
    Any help would higly appreciable.
    Regards,
    Manmohan Sharma

    Hi Detlef / Gowtham,
Now I am able to fetch data from flat files from OWB Server as well as OWB Client.
One way I have achieved as suggested by you
    1) Creating location on the OWB Client
    2) Samples the files at client
    3) Created & Configured external table
    4) Copy all flat files on OWB Server
    5) Updated the location which I created at the client.
    Other way
    1) Creating location on the OWB Client
    2) Samples the files at client
    3) Created & Configured external table
    4) Copied flat files on the sever in same drive & directory . like if my all flat files are on C:\data at OWB Client then I copied flat file C:\data on the OWB Server. But this is feasible for Non-Windows.
    Hence my problem solved.
    Thanks a lot.
    Regards,
    Manmohan

  • Error in Deploying External Table

    Hi,
I am using OWB 10.2g version to create a database. While deploying the external table, I got the following message:
"TSS_15MIN_EX     ErrMsgKey     VLD-0180: A default location is required for external tables."
Could you help me in solving this issue?
    Thanks,
    Vipul

    Hi Sutirtha,
I tried to double click on the external table (in the Control Center) but nothing happens. I could only right click and select the only highlighted "Configure" option. In the configure option, only the following file locations turn up that all uses default file location:
    Bad File Location
    Discard file location
    Log file location
To give you a head start, It is the first time that we are deploying these tables as we are in a process of migrating the server to a different machine. In our current server, all these external tables are probably in C:\ or directed in C:\ but we have changed the path to D:\ in the new server. Do you think it has to do something while we import the metadata?
    Thanks,
    Vipul

  • External table in Oracle 10g and Windows server 2003 problem

I'm having a problem accessing an external table in an Oracle 10g and Windows 2003 server environment. The disk is remote (mapped) to the server. It's the usual access errors, kup-04001 or kup-04063.
I have the [seemingly] exact same setup in an Oracle 9i and Windows 2000 server environment which works perfectly. Services run as local SYSTEM and SYSTEM has full permissions on the disk. Directories exist and so do the permissions to the directories.
In the Oracle 10g and Windows 2003 environment, services run as local SYSTEM and SYSTEM has full permissions on the mapped disk. Directories exist and so do the permissions to the directories.
This obviously effects mappings, deployments, etc.
Does anyone know if something changed in either the db or the os?
    Thank you,
    Michael

    Thank you for your reply.
Your proposal is the standard solution. As a matter of fact, that's how it is on my "old" system. Server "A" Oracle services are started by SYSTEM. Server "B" Oracle services are started by SYSTEM and is where the flat files reside. SYSTEM has full permissions on a disk local to Server "B". Database directoriies defined on Server "A" point to Server "B" remote disk. External Tables on Server "A" are defined with directories that point to Server "B" remote (mapped) disk. I have no problems with this configuration.
I'm having a problem acheiving the same configuration with Oracle 10g and Windows 2003. I guess I'm baffled over the fact it isn't working the same way as my "old" environment. Why shouldn't it? Oracle (and you) want me to start services as a specific user. It shouldn't have to be that way unless something changed in the way the database makes calls to the os or if Microsoft slipped something in with one of it's numerous security patches.

  • External Table : property name="oracle.kv.parentKey"

    Hi,
Base on external table example in version 2.0.23, I have major key + minor key as follow:
    /user/user<i>@example.com/-/info/
When I changed the property oracle.kv.parentKey in the config file to be full majorKey instead of one part of the major key, there is no results
    For example:
when the value of this property is: /user (the default in the example) - I got all KV pairs starting with /user prefix
but when I configure it to: /user/[email protected] which is the full majorKey I didn't get answers at all (although the KV exists).
Does this property support only first part of majorKey or may I misunderstand the concept?
    Thanks in advanced,
    YosiK

    Hi YosiK,
The parentKey value in this context is treated the same as parentKey argument to the KVStore.storeIterator() methods. As described in the javadoc for those API calls:
parentKey - the parent key whose "child" KV pairs are to be fetched. It may be null to fetch all keys in the store. If non-null, the major key path must be a partial path and the minor key path must be empty.
So, in fact, the parentKey MUST NOT be a complete major key - it must be partial. There must be majorKey components following the parentKey that is specified. The subRange argument does interacts with this though. In the example, if you leave parentKey as "/user" but add a subRange parameter with value
"I/[email protected]/[email protected]/I" you would achieve the result that I think you originally anticipated.

  • Issue in External Table Authentication and Authorization in OBIEE11G

    Hello Gurus,
Can anyone help me how to configure External Table Authentication and Authorization in OBIEE11g through weblogic server not like in 10g style(Through INIT Blocks).
I've followed the (Doc ID 1338007.1) document. But when i'm restart the Managed servers and Admin servers after configuring the SQLAuthenticator all my services are showing down.
I already raised the SR (SR 3-6286054151) on this issue. But still i didn't get any reply from them.
Can anyone help me out on this issue or can anyone me send the document for "how to configure External Table Authentication and Authorization in OBIEE11g" . It's really appreciate for your quick response.
    my mail ID [email protected]
    Thanks,

    Hi John,
    Thanks for your quick response.
We configured "ReadOnlySQL Provider" by following the Oracle's white paper(Doc ID 1338007.1) Please find the below steps what we configured in weblogic console.
    1. Created the Data Source
    2. In the data source specified the Database driver--> *Oracle's Driver Thin for service connections: Versions:9.0.1 and later.
    3. Defined the connection Properties .
    4. Selected targets as Admin server and bi_server.
    Then Activate changes
    5. Created new provider by using ReadOnlySQL Authenticator
    6. In the provider specific tab we given the SQL statements and saved it.
    7. Restarted the Admin and Managed servers.
After restarted the services when we open the Enterprise Manager page all the services are showed as Undefined - means red.
Apart from that we followed your suggested link http://askjohnobiee.blogspot.com/2012/09/how-to-oid-authentication-with-groups.html
For External table authentication do we need to configure BISQLAuthenticator or ReadOnlySQLAuthenticator ?
If we configure BISQLAuthenticator we just import Groups from database to Console application. Then how can it Authenticated to the User ?
Please let me know your ideas on this.
    Thanks,
    Syam

  • Headers appear in external table

I have defined several external tables over text files that have been built in the same way - in excel, then saved as a csv file.
Most of them work fine but there is one that always returns the column headers as data. I cant understand how this happens for this one file when they are all built in the the same way. I have checked the ddl for the external tables and they are equivalent.
I realise I could set it to skip 1 row but I am loathe to do that because if this is some sort of bug then it may be resolved later resulting in the first row of data being lost - a problem that may not become obvious until found by end users.
I have tried rebuilding from scratch and get the same result.
Has anyone else faced this situation?

I don't know what the exact trick is that OWB does,
but when you sample the file you use for the external
table and tell OWB to use the first row for the
header names, it won't use the first line as a data
line, even though there's nothing to be found in the
external table definition that indicates that.Hi,
that's no trick. If you sample the file and use the first row for column names the first row only disapears in the wizard. The resulting external table definition doesn't contain a skip row statement in this case automatically. The reason why you don't recognize this is because per default the loader writes no bad files. So the header row is normally ignored (because it doesn't match the structure) and you don't find it in the external table. If you will configure your external tables based on a file with an header and a skip parameter = 0 to produce a bad file (Bad File Name = file.bad) you will find the header row in this bad file then.
The only right way ist to configure the skip parameter - not to repress the resulting errors.
In this special file I guess the header matches the structure of the external table, so it isn't ignored but loaded into the external table.

    Detlef

  • Skipping header in external table...

Is it possible to define an external table within OWB to skip the first few rows of a file? I haven't been able to find anything in the configuration of an external table that allows you to skip lines.
If it is not available, will it be be added to OWB in the future?
    I am running OWB 9.2.0.2.8
    Thanks

I think I have found a bug in OWB. I keep losing the number of rows to skip in external tables.
I defined a File to skip the first three rows then created an external table based on the File. When I deployed the external table, "SKIP 3" was generated. Later, I made some configuration changes to the external table (setup a BAD file/location, set it to trim the fields, load Nulls, etc). When I redeployed the external table, "SKIP 3" was missing.
Then I did an MDL export of the File. In the MDL file, "SkipRecords" was 0. I changed it to 3, and then imported the MDL back into OWB (match by UOID, replace existing). Then when I redeployed the external table, "SKIP 3" was back in the definition.
Is this a known issue? Is it fixed in the latest version? I am using OWB 9.2.0.2.8.
    Thanks!

  • More than one flat files with same external table

Is it possible to create external table in owb associated with more than one file ie to generate code like LOCATION ( FILE1,FILE2) in create table ddl.

    Hi,
Yes, you can add multiple files by using the configuration of the external table, and create many instances of 'files'. Every 'file' you specify requires you to specify a location and a file name.
For more details, please review chapter 5 of the user's guide (http://www.oracle.com/technology/documentation/warehouse.html), page 5-15.
    Hope this helps.

  • External Table Performance and Sizing

    Hi,
Can anyone tell me anything about best practices for external tables?
I have an application that writes structured log data to flat files. The size of these files can be configured and when the size limit is reached, they are rolled over. The data itself is queriable via an external table in oracle. Every so often the data is migrated (materialized) to a normal database table so it can be indexed, etc. and to keep the external file size down.
    My questions are:
<ol><li>     is there an optimum file size for an external table (overall size / number of rows) - by that, I suppose I mean, is there a limit where performance degrades significantly rather than constantly?
    </li>
<li>is it better to have one large file mapped to the external table or multiple smaller ones mapped to the same table? e.g. does oracle do some parallel work on multiple smaller files at the same time which might improve things?
    </li>
    </ol>
If there are any resources discussing these issues, that would be great - or if there is any performance data for external tables in this respect, I would love to see it.
    Many thanks,
    Dave

    Hi Dave
is there an optimum file size for an external table (overall size / number of rows) - by
that, I suppose I mean, is there a limit where performance degrades significantly rather
than constantly?AFAIK there is no such limit. In other words, access time is proportional to the size (number of rows).
is it better to have one large file mapped to the external table or multiple smaller ones
mapped to the same table? e.g. does oracle do some parallel work on multiple smaller
files at the same time which might improve things? The DOP of a parallel query on an external table is limited by the number of files. Therefore, to use parallel processing, more than one file is needed.

  • Can we bind a single external table with multiple files in OWB 11g?

    Hi,
I wanted to ask if it is possible to bind an external table with multiple source files at same or different locations? Or an external table has to be bound to a single source file and a single location.
    Thanks in advance,
    Ann.
Edited by: Ann on Oct 8, 2010 9:38 AM

    Hi Ann,
Can you please help me out by telling me the steps to accomplish this. Right click on the external table in project tree, from the menu choose Configure,
then in opened Configuration Properties dialog window right clock on Data Files node and choose from menu Create -
you will get new record for file - specify Data File Name property
Also link from OWB user guide
