External Video Problem

Macbook Pro (late 2008) connected to 24' LED Display. Final Cut Pro Studio 2. Final cut A/V settings for external video to LED display. Mirror on desktop checked. LED display is connected and black but I get no playback in the display. All frames, single frames, nothing. When I use motion and the LED display is selected as my external video, playback is perfectly synced in the viewer and display. All other programs allow me to use the LED display as my monitor except FCP. Why? I posted this before but got no answer. I have searched and searched. DVcreator.net, creativecow.net. etc....Nobody seems to know why I am not getting external playback in my LED display. I have trashed prefs, I have reinstalled the entire box set. Nothing. Anyone have any idea?
Thanks in advance.

Yes, it is a computer monitor (like I said Apple 24' LED Display) but its not DVI. The new Macbooks have that new mini display port. That is how it is connected. These new LED monitors were designed specifically for the new macbooks. You are correct about the " Digital Desktop Preview" part BUT a second display can be used as an external monitor via the external video settings (as long as you monitor audio from the built in audio). I have an AJA IO and I use that with my G5 edit bay and I am currently looking into the new Matrox MXO2 for my Macbook but the point is this works but only when I do as I said in my last reply. If I was editing video for NTSC viewing, of course I would use an I/O and monitor it on a NTSC monitor but considering a bulk of my editing is for the web and 720p, why not use a second display for monitoring? This is how I have gotten playback so far,
create new project, select "Digital Cinema Desktop Preview-Full Screen", import a video file that does not match the sequence settings. When I drag a clip to the timeline, choose NOT to change sequence settings to match the clip when it pops up. Then render the clip and I get synced playback in the viewer and LED display in fullscreen (but not with the preview slug). What is strange, if I export the rendered clip, re-import it and place it in the matched up sequence, my initial problem occurs. Unlimited RT is off (tried on as well). I have tried everything. The only reason I am **** bent on getting this to work is when I first got the computer and display, this WORKED!!! Perfectly. I imported HD mov files from an SD card and used the settings I am using now and had no problem what so ever. Then one day (only thing I can think of that changed was an OS security update) it just decided to NOT work. I believe it is a sequence/project setting problem or the fact that the media isn't logged, it is just imported. I'm trying to make a custom setting to fix this but no luck at the moment yet. If someone has the exact same setup as me please tell me you have the same problem and I don't have a hardware issue.....hmmmm In fact, I'm going to switch to the other lesser internal video card and see if that works.

  • Problem With External Video

I am currently running Final Cut Pro 5.1.2 on OS X 10.4.8. I am having some serious issues trying to get Final Cut to display the timelines video out to my TV. I have my Canon GL2 connected via FireWire, and set it up so the DV input plays as the audio/video. It then goes out to the TV via some standard RCA jacks. I have done this before, no problem.
    The settings are as follows:
    External Video: All Frames
Video Playback: Apple FireWire NTSC (720x480)
    Audio Playback: Audio Follows Video
Sequence Preset: DV NTSC 48 kHz
Capture Preset: DV NTSC 48 kHz
Device Control Preset: FireWire NTSC Basic
If I turn the camera off, the output shows it as 'missing'. I can import using the camera so I know its connected correctly with the FireWire. I can see playback on the TV if I watch the tape, so I know that too is connected correctly.

Its funny you should reply, I was just looking through my posts, and was reading a response you left months ago when I asked a question, then I came back to this post and there you were again! Thanks, I fiddled with the camera for a bit and finally did something to get it to show up. Marked as solved.

  • Scrubbing problems with external video turned on

I recently upgraded to Tiger and using FCP vers 4.5. When my external video is on and viewing on my NTSC monitor, I have a very irritating problem. Whenever I use the keyboard to play in reverse or scrub by holding down the J and K keys at the same time for slow play, the image stutters and drops frames. Also, the Viewer or Canvas display will also periodically black out for a second or two. When I scrub with the mouse, I don't see this problem. It's only when using the keyboard.
When I turn off external video, everything is fine. I've never had this problem in the past with my system. The only thing that's changed is Tiger and Quicktime 7 Pro. I have done all the upgrades and threw away all FCP preference files.
I'm stumped. Anyone else having the same problem?
By the way, video plays fine when in external video mode. Laid off a project last night, no issues or dropped frames.

Oh my goodness I'm having the same problem! Recently I upgraded to Quicktime 7.0.3 but did some Security Updates as well and thought I was up the creek. I'm on FCP 4.5, OS X 10.3.9 and noticed the same backwards stuttering. Thank you so much for putting your solution on there, I will try it first thing when I get to work tomorrow!

  • External monitor: problem to enable video output

    Hello,
I try to use an external monitor.
I usually use it by a camcorder and a Firewire PAL in FCP without any problem.
In Color, if I go in User preferences, Video output is set on disabled and the others (for example Digital Cinema preview or Firewire Pal) are all gray and I cannot set them.
    Thank you for your help.

    Luca,
Please refer to the included documentation. Color does not and will not send external video through firewire to any device, save one, and that is the Aja IO HD and then that device is limited to standard definition video only.
This "issue" has also been well covered in this and other forums: you need an input/output card manufactured by [Aja|http://www.aja.com/html/products_macintosh.html] or by [Blackmagic Designs|http://www.blackmagic-design.com/products>.

  • External Video Playback Problem

When viewing material in the source viewer playback on my external monitor randomly freezes. The playback on my edit display is fine, only the external playback has issues. This started happening after upgrading to 7.
Content is DV and timeline and external display set to match.
    Using ATI Radeon X1900 XT.

HELP... My external video freezes when ever I use my external 1920x1080 monitor. Everything was fine prior the upgrade to FCP 7.0.1 or maybe even 7.0 The previous thread said this is a known issue. Do you have any links to Apple addressing this problem or is Apple aware there is a problem? It started happening to my system back in middle of 2009. I thought the solution would be to upgraded my video card from a 256 NVIDIA P345 to ATI RADEON 1900 with 512 ram. This made it less jerkey but the problem is still very hard to live with. Can anyone shed some light on this issue? Thanks in advance.

  • Problems with external video

    Hello,
I am trying to record video to my mini DV camera, something I have done many times before, and for some reason i can't!
My settings are all as they should be (or so I think) in NTSC 24, view all frames. The computer does recognize my device. I even have tried to capture and it does it. It plays, it just won't record.
The most annoying thing is that the camera monitor does show a still frame from the video in FCP but when I press spacebar (am trying to record from playback) it doesn't play the video only the audio then when I stop it it shows another frame again.
I have 512 RAM. Too little, I know, but like I said it has worked before and it should work again.
I'm getting a headache, any help is welcome
    thanks
    IBook G4   Mac OS X (10.3.5)

The External video has been in 'all frames' from the start.
I also tried the resizing but didn't work.
The very strange thing is that I can see the images in the camera when I move the playhead in the Timeline. But after pressing space bar the image freezes in the camera even if it plays in the canvas.
I know it must be something simple, I just can't figure it out.
    thanks

  • Handshake Problem with external video

I have a 13-inch, Aluminum, Late 2008 MacBook. After upgrading to Mountain Lion I cannot get my mac to connect with any external video device: projector or TV. My mac can't detect the external device even when I go to "Detect Device" In System Pref.

How many months must pass before apple addresses this, this has been a known issue since July at least. Every display in my place has issues with this nonsense, and the only real solution has been to downgrade back to Lion. I can only do this with my home machine as my work laptop must remain updated to match the work system. This sort of thing drives me so crazy I can't even begin to voice my anger, why did I pay this company to upgrade my technology when all it did was force my monitors to go dark?

  • Mini DVI to VGA Adapter Video Problem

This year at Randolph-Macon College we replaced the Math lab Emac computers with IMac G5 Intel machines. The laboratory has an NEC model MT1050 projector with a manufacturer’s date of August 2002. We can not seem to get rid of ever present scan lines. We can slow them down and speed them up by adjusting resolution and refresh rates, but nothing will remove them. We are connecting the IMac to the projector via the Apple Mini-DVI to VGA Adapter. It is specifically designed for use with the iMac (Intel Core Duo), and the adapter connects to the Mini-DVI port of the computer and the VGA end of the adapter to an external VGA monitor or projector.
Troubleshooting the problem we have swapped IMac Intel computers with no luck, but we still have to use the Apple Mini-DVI to VGA Adapter. When we hook the projector to a Intel Mac Book Pro, we have to use a different adapter, but then it works perfectly. In fact, everything we try using other adapters works fine, it’s just when we use the Apple Mini-DVI to VGA Adapter that we experience the video problem.
Has anyone experienced this problem and if so, have you been able to remedy it?
iMac (Intel Core Duo)   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

I don't have much to suggest, except to ask if you can try with a different mini-DVI to VGA adapter. (i.e. do you have more than one on hand to make sure yours isn't just defective?) Make sure it is firmly seated into the iMac.
I use the same adapter to provide an extended desktop on an old CRT monitor and the display is great.

  • T400 - Video problems and a long wait for repair...

    Hi,
I'd just like to state my experience with Lenovo Customer Support for a video problem with my T400.  Bottom line, as of today, it's been around 27 business days that it's been with Lenovo, and 41 days total since it's failed on me, and nobody, including Lenovo Customer Support, seems to know what its status is exactly, except that they're waiting on a part which has no ETA.
In July 2009, I bought a T400, a 2764CTO version with the switchable graphics between the internal intel graphics and the ATI GPU.
All was well until February 1st, 2010, when the LCD sudden wouldn't work.  Well, it would work, but the screen was very very dim, even with the display maxed out on brightness.  You would have literally bring your nose to the screen in order to even make out any text or images - definitely unusable.  However, if you hooked up an external monitor via the video output, the T400 would display video output properly that way.  When I did this, I noticed that the switchable graphics option wasn't there any more - couldn't switch to the ATI GPU.  Based on this, I figured it must be a video card or LCD issue, or a combination of both.
So, I called Lenovo Customer Support (CS) at 1-800-565-3344, since I'm up here in Canada, and I initially was issued a case number of 41JRFSD, and I agreed to send it to a local Lenovo Repair Centre.  Oops, my bad, I made a mistake using the locator tool I was told to use at bplocator.lenovo.com, and thought the Centre was relatively close.  Not quite.  So, I called Lenovo CS again, and they issued me with a new case number, 40KWSYF, and said they'd send a box for return to depot.  And within 2 days, Feb 2nd or 3rd, I got a Purolator courier return box.  That's fast service!  Pleased, I put my T400 in according to instructions, and I sent it off.
Fast forward to about mid-February.  I called Lenovo CS, and apparently there was a delay - the depot needed a part that wasn't in stock. Fine, I know these things can happen - I'll wait.
Fast forward to March 1st.  I talk to a Lenovo CS rep, and it appears that the part needed has arrived, and they've put a rush order to get the computer back to me. Great!
Fast forward to March 8th, still no computer.  I talk to another Lenovo CS rep... strange, there's no update.  The issue gets escalated to the Depot managers.
Fast forward to March 12th.  Still no word on my T400's status.  An email fron CS has been sent to the depot.  Not even the CS reps know what's going on.  The rep I talk to figures there should be a response by the end of the day.
Fast forward to today, March 13th, 4:50pm Pacific Time.  I just finish talking to Lenovo CS, there's been no response from the depot.  Apparently there's a part that they're waiting on for repairs, but there's no ETA on it.  Is it the same part that I've waiting on all this time?  Is it a new one?  I don't know.
At this point, I've been told to send an email explaining my situation, and I've also been told to talk to Scott the next time I call CS on Monday after 3pm Eastern.  I have to stress that the Lenovo Customer Support Reps I've talked to have all been very sympathetic and have been courteous, helpful, and professional - something I appreciate from having worked in Customer Support myself.  But the bottom line remains: my computer's not back to me.
So, my questions to the community here: is my experience here typical?  Is there any hope of my seeing my computer back, or even at least just the hard drive?  I've used Lenovo computers for work for the past 7 years, and it was my good work experiences that led me to buying a Lenovo for home use.  However, it's been a while since I've been without my T400, and I was hoping to get my taxes done on the computer too, since they're due at the end of March.  I'll reserve judgement on Lenovo until I get my computer back, but at this point, all I can say is... I'm disappointed.
If you're reading this, I'll let you judge my experience for youself.  I'll update my case as it progresses.
    Thanks!

    Hi all,
So, an update with some good news: my computer is finally back!
After a total of over 40 business days (just over 2 months) I finally have my T400 back at home, working again!
According to the spec sheets, the repair depot had to replace: the systemboard/planar, display/LCD panel, LCD cable, PC card, bluetooth, and the inverter.  BIOS/Embedded controller was also updated, along with the regular diagnostics to ensure everything was working properly.
I give Lenovo credit though: they got the final parts to repair the computer on Monday, April 5th, and shipped my computer back to me for the next day (today, April 6th).  That's fast service, once repaired!
However, my case spans over 4 screens of updates and repair depot orders of parts.
Also, it took me over 10 calls to Lenovo's Customer Service, plus an escalation to a higher-level manager after 1 month had passed, to get progress updates and ETAs for repair.
Lenovo called me only once to give me an update, and that was the manager whom my issue was escalated to: all the other times, I called Lenovo for an update.
The story doesn't end here, however:
In talking to Customer Support, they told me that Sales might be able to sell me an extended warranty at a discount, given the issues I had.  And indeed, after talking to Sales, they offered me a 1 year warranty extension at a price of just over $100 CDN, plus tax.  This is a sale price, compared to the regular retail of $129.  Unfortunately, they can't sell me just one month.
At this point, I refused their offer, and again escalated to a manager to request an extension of exactly 1 month on my existing warranty.  I figure 1 month delay in repairs, that's plausible - crap happens, and while most repairs take 5-10 business days, I can understand it can sometimes go higher.  Two months though....  My request for a warranty extension is being considered by the manager it was escalated to.
So, one last question for you folks reading this: am I being unreasonable, talking to Lenovo support one more time to request a 1 month extension of my warranty, given the length of time it's taken for repairs?  I'll post the response Lenovo will give me tomorrow, as they've said they'll do.
One thing for sure: Lenovo's response will definitely influence my choice of brand from whom to buy a new computer (and it will influence the choice of my friends who've heard my issues, and maybe yours too).  My particular repair problem may not come up often, but if it does happen to you, I'd be happy to know of your experience.
Thanks for sticking with me through the drama!

  • Timeline and External Video issues

Have an issue with output. My external video is not showing up to play from the timeline. I am getting neither audio or video. Have checked all firewire ports, used 2 different monitors, 2 different decks, 2 different firewire cable and even tried it without the external hard drive. It shows in the view menu that all frames are checked and the output is set to the correct monitor. Refreshing the external devices does not work either. Ran FCP Rescue. Still did not fix the problem. The Canvas window is sized to fit in the window. Capturing video and audio works great. Just output and monitoring it while editing. Can I get an answer. It is the latest FCP, 6.0.2. Is this a problem with the new quicktime 7.3.1?
This is an emergency. Any help would be appreciated.

You can't monitor SD without a 3rd party card.
Perhaps you mean the material is DV?
You don't send DV material directly to a monitor - you send it out via firewire to some sort of DV/analog conversion then to a monitor.
Perhaps your post was not clear?

  • Why does a Safe Boot fix my video problem?

After visiting my local Genius Bar twice (and getting two different answers), I erased and reinstalled Snow Leopard 10.6 on my late-2006 "white plastic" iMac.
I reinstalled the version of SL that came with the iMac, then upgraded it twice to OS 10.6.8. Software Updater says all of my OS components are up-to-date.
My video-corruption problems ("ghosting", "tearing", pixelation of icon, then the kernel CRASHES within 20 minutes) appear when I boot normally. But they permanently disappear when I reboot into the Safe Mode!
I've search Apple.com and every other site I can find without a clear answer to this:
What extensions, StartUp items, software daemons or gremlins DO NOT load in Safe Mode? Shouldn't one of them be the cause of my problem? Or does Safe Boot work on a hardware-level, too?
This happens on ALL accounts, both Admin and regular users. No external devices are connected except the wired mouse and wired keyboard.
I've zapped the PRAM three times, and I've unplugged it for hours. Disk Utility shows everything is good, too. There's about 50 gigs left on the internal 750 GB hard drive.
The so-called "Geniuses" both ran their Triage OS off an external drive and my iMac hardware passed ALL of their tests. One said it just needed a reinstall (a free fix!!), and the other said my video card is bad ($800, and I have to use an outside repair shop).
Can someone give me an idea how to proceed? I've been working in Safe Mode for days, but that prevents me from using: Sound, my home network, fonts, Preview, editing in iPhoto, etc.
    Thanks.

    Hi, Mike,
    Thanks for the quick reply.
I read the linked post about QE, but I don't see how it could help me troubleshoot my problem. Could you clarify: is QE a piece of "software" (that is, a file -- like an extension)?
If QE IS a piece of software that is disabled in a Safe Boot, I should be able to move it to my Desktop and restart. If my video problem is eliminated, the QE software is the problem, right?
But then, if my problem is caused by a file/extension, why would the problem occur (and be eliminated in a Safe Boot) right after I re-installed the OS? Shouldn't all the System software be pristine right after re-installation? But since it's NOT fixed by the re-installation, it seems like a hardware problem -- like the expensive video card. That's what's confusing me.
So, I'm proceeding as if the problem is caused by a file being loaded into memory and I'm trying to disable the items that don't load in Safe Boot Mode one-at-a-time. I just need a specific list of what those items are (and their locations on my hard drive).
In OS/9, I used Conflict Catcher to do this automatically, but I haven't found an OSX app to do the same. So I'm trying to do it manually.
Please excuse my layman's terms. Any help is appreciated.

  • Linking to external video in Captivate 7

I develop video-based training. Each slide includes mostly video. I've been successfully embedding f4v videos into Captivate projects for some time but video quality and file size issues make it necessary to begin linking to videos on external servers.
I've tried a number of options without success.
I create a video event, choose the url option, and add the url from the uploaded video. The only usable server choice is the Adobe Media Streaming Service. I've tested the videos on different servers including Amazon since the troubleshooting advice alerted me that only Adobe partners servers will be recognized. The project previews and the progress bar moves as if the video is playing but only the background file is visible. I tried all the preview options - no luck.
I decided to try the YouTube widget. I uploaded test videos to YouTube, inserted the Interaction widget and added the url, etc. This option results in a successful preview only when I choose the html 5 output in web browser option. Captivate will successfully publish the project but I get "Java Script Error unable to acquire LMS, API content, may not play properly" messages.
The published file performs like all of the unsuccessful previews. The file loads and acts as if the videos are playing in that the progress bar moves but there is no video, just the slide background image. I tried different output settings like just SWF, just html5, both SWF and html5, different versions of the flash player, etc. I also added the output folder to the Flash Global Security settings in case it was a permissions issue.
I'm working on a mac so I emailed a zipped file to my PC and tried to open in Internet Explorer to see if the file might play on a different system or browser - same outcome - no luck.
Making external video work is critical to my work and use of Captivate so I'm hoping there's something I'm missing or misunderstanding about what I need to do.
Any help or advice will be appreciated.

I'm continuing to have problems with the YouTube widget. My client sent me YouTube links and when I copied and pasted the new links into the Captivate file and the published and uploaded the file, the links didn't work.
To review, I uploaded video files to YouTube and used the interactions widget to insert the linked videos. The videos which I uploaded can be previewed in html5 in web browser but not in any other way. When I publish this file and view the file on my system on my browser (Safari) the file opens but the videos do not play. However, when I upload to my ftp site and open the file from there, the linked YouTube videos play.
So this led me to believe that I have a file that will work at least in html5 output. But when I replace the original YouTube links that I uploaded with new links provided by my client the videos preview in html5 in web browser mode but do not play on my system or when uploaded to my ftp site. All of the videos (mine and my clients) play in YouTube and preview in html5 mode.
Additionally, when I ouput the html5 file, the quiz doesn't work properly. The radio buttons don't appear on screen so when answers are selected the user has no way of knowing their selections have been accepted. Oddly, the quiz is registering answers since when you submit there is a brief flash during which you can see the buttons but they quickly disappear and results are tallied accurately at the end. But the quiz is unusable without user feedback for selections. You can view this performance beginning on the sixth slide (the beginning of the quiz).

Are html5 output files compatible with Learning Management Systems? Is there a way to use the YouTube widget in SWF output files?

  • ITunes / Quicktime Video Problems With Windows VISTA

I took up Windows Vista as soon as it was available and initially had no problems with iTunes. Then later, video clips (those purchased from iTunes and those I had converted myself) started stuttering / freezing and eventually crashing iTunes and finally I lost audio as well.
Ayyway to cut a long story short, I have uninstalled / re-installed Vista now about eight times for problems with installing drivers for USB devices (I've finally solved all these problems). After the last install the first program I installed was iTunes, tried video and it worked flawlessly. Then, each time I added a hardware device or program I would restart Vista and retry iTunes video.
The first item I added was a USB thumb drive (as I had on all previous occasions to take advantage of Vista's 'Ready Boost'). The thumb drive is a 'Sony 2GB micro vault tiny', and meets the transfer speed requirements for 'Ready Boost', as soon as I had set the drive up for 'Ready Boost' I started having the same problems with iTunes video and Quicktime.
Removed the thumb drive, restarted iTunes and had flawless video playback again. Have tried this over and over with the same result.
So my question is, has anyone else had video playback problems with iTunes / Vista and found similar problems. Trying to tie down whether this is a compatability problem with 'Ready Boost' or the thumb drive used. I have also tried a Sandisk Titanium 2GB with the same result.
I am not sure exactly how 'Ready Boost' works, I thought it added memory that was used to cache page files to the thumb drive instead of to the HDD making a faster seek /access time? Which should make things faster. Another article I read today was talking about 'Ready Boost' being an affordable extension to RAM, in this case I could understand the problem as I would think the access to a USB 2.0 thumbdrive would be slower than that to RAM.
Any help appreciated, but I guess my bottom line is anytime I want to watch video on iTunes, I just pull the USB thumb drive .
PC Pentium 4   Other OS   Windows Vista Home Premium

I have the same stuttering video issues with iTunes and Vista. While I have used a thumb drive to transfer files (not Sony) I have not yet messed with Ready boost. I have seen several others complain about the video problem, perhaps they will chime in as well. Unfortunately, your solution doesn't work for me. I pretty much ignore iTunes, waiting for the next version (only god knows when it will be released).
I do have an external firewire drive connected, I'll disconnect later today and see if that has any affect.

  • External video doesn't play but only shows still frame (some times).

When trying to view a clip or sequence on my external video monitor (NTSC via firewire through Sony converter box) and only for some of my projects, I cannot get the video to play. It displays a single frame and then updates when I stop playing a clip on the desktop. I've selected "all frames" in the External video option, but I cannot get it to play real time. This only happens with certain clips or sequences. Any ideas what's up?

I've been having this same issue. I'm pretty sure it has to do with one of my sequence settings. I have no issues when I'm playing back an SD project but when I try to playback an HD project to an SD monitor I encounter thsi problem where it stays locked on the last frame I paused at. I'm using a Blackmagic Decklink Extreme HD and attempting to playback over composite.

  • Imac iSight external video adapter

My original display on the iMac iSight is damaged. I noticed the external video port and may I assume that I could use it to run it that way. But the problem is figuring which adapter to use.  Somewhere is mentioned PN M9321 G/A and PN 9320 G/A but when I go to the store to purchase it it does not say that it is suitable for my PPC iMac. It does say that is suitable for intel I Mac. If anyone would please let me know what is to do.
    Thanks in advance

After a search in two different directions, I found some information on what may be the correct VGA adapter for mirroring the internal display to an external; a page link and a product number. Appears to be obsoleted, but a call to Apple (main online store, or local Apple Store) should let you know if you'll be looking for used online, etc. Could be there is a new part number for this, or perhaps some authorized reseller has old stock? or a lucky find.
The adapter in question probably fit a few different models of that vintage, so someone online may have one if it truly is obsoleted. Some look similar but do not work the same.
