ExternalInterface.call URL string limit

I am using ExternalInterface.call and i found out that
recursive calling will not work .........and passing all the data
in one call
is also giving me a problem with string limits...........ANY
IDEAS please?

Yes. Make a function in JavaScript that uses the
"GetVariable" method.
(READ HERE:

...and call it from the external interface. Put your 'string
data content' in a variable and read it from JavaScript.

  • ExternalInterface.call String parameter length limit???

    Is there a String length limit to the amount of chars a
    String can contain when passed as a parameter to
    ExternalInterface.call()?
    Also, are there any chars that ExternalInterface.call()
    cannot serialize in a string?? Like \n, \t ...etc.
    The livedocs don't answer these questions.

    thanks for your reply but i just figured it out.
    ExternalInterface.call("jsFunc", longString);
    There is seems to be no char limit that i came across cause i
    was able to shove 2K in there.
    The problem is the newlines in the string, they must get
    messed up during serialization. Just make sure you clean the string
    of newlines like so:
    longString = longString.split("\r").join("
    ").split("\n").join(" ");
    ExternalInterface.call("jsFunc", longString);
    works fine......

  • ExternalInterface Call Javascript Array to AS2 throwing undefined error

    I need to pass various (tracking) IDs to a .swf.  the IDs are in an array like this =
    <script type="text/javascript">
    function getImpID() {
    var medID={impID:'12345',pvID:'677890',exID:'654332'};
    return medID;
    function thisMovie(banner) {
        if (navigator.appName.indexOf("Microsoft") != -1) {
            return window[banner]
        else {
            return document[banner]
    window.onload=getImpID;
    </script>
    Right now the AS2 I have is:
    import flash.external.*;
    System.security.allowDomain(sourceDomain)
    var allID:String = ExternalInterface.call.apply("getImpID");
    function getIDs(){
              var impID:Number;
              var pvID:Number;
              var exID:Number;
              var id_arr:Array = allID.split(",");
        _root.id_test.text = impID;
    getIDs();
    Basically what I need is to split the three ID's from the javascript so that I can append them with various URL clickTags in the AS.  Main issue I have is the 'undefined' error, so I'm going out on a limb here that the AS2 I have doesn't do anything right now of value.  Biggest head scratcher for me is, if I have the IDs in an array in the javascript (medID) how to get them not only properly into Flash but to separate them into their separate IDs.
    Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!

    Forgot to reply, your guidance helped in solving the riddle =
    actionscript:
    function idTag(){
              getID = Object(ExternalInterface.call("getImpID"));
              getID.toString();
      //_root.id_test.text = getID;
    idTag();
    javascript
    <script type="text/javascript">
    function getImpID() {
              var getID=['impID=8910424942498409873&pvID=8910423767061585831'];
              thisMovie("banner").getID;
              return getID;
    function thisMovie(movieName) {
        if (navigator.appName.indexOf("Microsoft") != -1) {
            return window[movieName]
        else {
            return document[movieName]
    </script>
    worked like a charm!

  • Problem with ExternalInterface.call and Internet Explorer

    Hi, I´m developing a site, (
    www.gen-studio.com/avelart2
    ), and I´m using a swf to display a set of thumbs that when
    clicked show an item and its description on the browser, those
    items might be images or video, everything works fine with the
    images.
    And actually it works fine with the videos too, when using
    Firefox, but when I test the page on Internet explorer it just
    doesn’t work!
    On principle let me describe how it´s supposed to work,
    a thumbnail when clicked sends an id number to javaScript using
    ExternalInterface.call(“myFunction”,myId); -I´m
    using AS3 for the swf´s-
    the javaScript file has already loaded (ever since$(
    document).ready) a XML file which uses to match the id with a file
    and the description, if the item to show it´s a video, then it
    creates a variable which holds a string with the proper html to
    embed a swf (a swf movie player that resides just next to the HTML
    file), when loaded, the swf movie player uses
    ExternalInterface.call() to ask for the source of the video that
    has to play, and that function is as follows:
    setVideo: function(){
    alert("hola");
    return comun.miVideo;
    (The alert(“hola”); is just to test that the
    function is being called), which it is, but it returns null as a
    value instead of the proper string, and this happens only on
    internet Explorer, but works correctly on Firefox.
    I´ve been reading all day about the subject and found a
    few interesting things, which though have made me narrow my
    problem, they haven´t just provided me with a solution, what I
    found so far:
    -I must have in account flash security issues: Checked (my
    actionScript follows:)
    import fl.video.*;
    import flash.external.ExternalInterface;
    flash.system.Security.allowDomain("*");
    var vid:FLVPlayback = this.miPlayer;
    vid.source =
    flash.external.ExternalInterface.call("comun.setVideo");
    -ExternalInterface and Internet explorer don´t work
    properly when tested locally: Checked (I have a server on my PC and
    I´m testing the site as well in the above direction).
    -The object tag holding the swf must have a proper id
    attribute: Checked.
    -It´s super important the way the object tag is formed:
    Checked, and I also tested the tag separately (I put it directly in
    the HTML instead of adding it via javaScript) and it worked as
    expected in both Firefox and Internet Explorer, which leads me to
    believe:
    -I read somewhere that if you add the object tag by using
    innerHTML or appendChild, returning values from javaScript to swf
    won´t work, but I couldn´t find an explanation nor a
    solution.
    Well, as I said now I´ve been looking all day for an
    answer, so I really hope you can help me or give me some advice on
    the subject, thank you so much for your time!

    Hi! it solved itself !! (nahh, I wish), but it indeed had a
    solution, it was something quite simple, and I don´t really
    understand why it was not working in the first place, but here is
    the thing:
    I´m learning jquery and this is the first proyect
    I´m officially using it, so I was using
    $('#myDIV').append("string"); to embed the swf, (and it was working
    perfectly on Firefox), so since I had narrowed my problem to those
    lines, I decided to try some good-old-fashioned-javaScript and
    changed it for: var myDiv =
    document.getElementById('thatParticularDiv'); myDiv.innerHTML =
    ('string'); and it worked both in Firefox and IE !!!!!! :)
    I´m quite happy about it, and if someone knows
    what´s the issue with my jquery approach I would love to hear
    it. THANKS !!

  • String limit does not appear in result list

    Hello
    I have a sequence file with a sequence call "String limit test". After running the sequence from a process model, the "Limits" container does not appear in the result list of the main sequence. I have checkec the IncludeInReport flag for the Limits container, still I don't see it.
    Basically I need this information after calling the MainSequence in the client file, in order to create a report file. How to inclide the variable in the ResultList[]?
    Madottati

    Madottati,
    All the data from Step.Result will be copied to Locals.ResultList. Limits container for the step is outside Result container and hence is not copied to the ResultList. IncludeInReport flag affects only properties that are in a result list or that TestStand copies to a result list.
    http://www.ni.com/white-paper/8289/en/ contains more details about what properties gets added to the Result List.
    You can use Additional Results feature toa add Limits container to the ResultList.

  • How to call URL to collect user input ?

    Hi all,
    I am writing a Swing applications and at some points, I need to call a URL (external web page) to collect user input. It invokes passing certain parameters to web page so that the web page can be displayed in some certain form. After the user input all data in web page, press "submit", my Swing application needs to get the input back. I suppose that calling URL is trivial but how can I get the input back ? Any input will be greatly appreicated.
    Note: the web page will be displayed in one JFrame but it may not related to this problem.
    C.K.

    response.sendRediresc("http://.......);
    public void sendRedirect(java.lang.String location)
                      throws java.io.IOException
        Sends a temporary redirect response to the client using the specified redirect location URL. This method can accept relative URLs; the servlet container must convert the relative URL to an absolute URL before sending the response to the client. If the location is relative without a leading '/' the container interprets it as relative to the current request URI. If the location is relative with a leading '/' the container interprets it as relative to the servlet container root.
        If the response has already been committed, this method throws an IllegalStateException. After using this method, the response should be considered to be committed and should not be written to.
        Parameters:
            location - the redirect location URL
        Throws:
            java.io.IOException - If an input or output exception occurs
            java.lang.IllegalStateException - If the response was committed or if a partial URL is given and cannot be converted into a valid URL

  • GetConnection(String URL) vs. (String URL, String user, String password)

    Hi,
    would have a question referring to the documention at http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E11882_01/appdev.112/e13995/oracle/jdbc/OracleDriver.html where the forms of getConnection are described.
    I would like to convert from using a signature that takes the URL, user name, and password as separate parameters to using a signature that takes the URL, user name, and password all as part of a URL parameter.
    While I was able to successfully connect to my database using the form getConnection(String URL, String, user, String password); I am not able to achieve the same when using getConnection(String URL).
    Here are the code snippets, maybe someone can point out the reason why the second approach is not working?
    approach 1 - working fine
    String driver = "oracle.jdbc.driver.OracleDriver";
    try {
              Class.forName(driver);
              } catch(java.lang.ClassNotFoundException e) {
              String connectionURL = "jdbc:oracle:thin:@localhost:1521:PMT";
              String pgUser = "\"James.Smith@000\"";
              String pgPwd = "\"js\"";
         try {
                   Connection conn = DriverManager.getConnection(connectionURL, pgUser, pgPwd);
    approach 2 - error: java.sql.SQLException: The Network Adapter could not establish the connection
    String driver = "oracle.jdbc.driver.OracleDriver";
    try {
              Class.forName(driver);
              } catch(java.lang.ClassNotFoundException e) {
    String connectionURL = "jdbc:oracle:thin:\"James.Smith@000\"/\"js\"@localhost:1521:PMT";
         try {
                   Connection conn = DriverManager.getConnection(connectionURL);
    Thanks a lot in advance
    Kind regards
    Thomas

    Let me get this clear.
    You want a login dialog.
    Some program calls the dialog and waits untile user respond
    once the user press ok or cancel it reutrn the users input to the caller.
    You can do this directly using JFrame
    but you can do it wil JDialog if you use it as aModal dialog.
    it will look like this
    class LogInDialog  extends JDialog implements ActionListener{
       String value;
       public LogInDialog(){
          setModel(true);
        // This is what you invoke
        public String loadDialog(){
            setVisible(true);
            return value;
        public void actionListener(..... e){
            if (e.getSource() == bCancel)
               value = null;
            else if (e.getSource() == bOk)
               value = //generate the string
            dispose();
    }

  • URL openStream problem. URL String length

    Hi,
    My problem is about length of the url string. I'm simply creating a URL and trying to call openStream() to get content. But if the length of url string exceeds 118 characters, I'm getting an exception. It says Server returned Http response code 505.
    If I try the same url string in a browser it's working.
    Thanks for all replies in advance...

    the problem solved, it was about white space not length... I didn't notice the white space there sorry!

  • ExternalInterface.call() problem

    Hi,
    My first problem was the random activation of the pop up
    blocker in Fierfox when I use navigateToURL("url", "_blank").
    I found a solution
    there,
    but unfortunaly this solution didn't work for me.
    The solution is to use ExternalInterface.call for opening a
    new window without the popup blocker, but I cannot use the solution
    if I don't put in my HTML page <param name="allowScriptAccess"
    value="always" />. If I don't put this parametre I cannot use
    ExternalInterface.call.
    You'll say, why you don't put this parametre? It's because a
    lot of person use this application, and they are able to integrate
    it into there web site, unfortunaly I cannot control if they put
    the parametre allowScriptAccess.
    So I'd like to know if it's possible to use
    ExternalInterface.call without the parametre.
    Thanks

  • Encoding URL String inside a .JAD file

    hi,
    Can you guys please kindly teach me on how to encode a URL String(eg. MIDlet-Server-URL: http://123.123.123.1) into the MIDlet .JAD file so that my MIDlet can use the getAppProperty() to get the URL String value.
    I heard about this once but I do not know how to add the value into my .JAD file and implement the getAppProperty() into my MIDlet source code.
    Thanks alot.
    Warmest regards,
    Qingyan

    Application-specific attributes don't begin with "MIDlet-", so use something like "Server-URL" rather than "MIDlet-Server-URL". In your JAD file, you would include
    Server-URL: http://123.123.123.1
    In your code, you would then call getAppProperty("Server-URL") to get the URL. getAppProperty() is a method of the MIDlet class, so you could call getAppProperty() from your MIDlet's constructor.

    If EI calls eval it should be able to resolve the object-path. However, this doesn't seem to be the case. Also note that my parameter is an array, so this probably wouldn't work, even if the syntax did.
    Anyway, I tested your syntax in my PDF, and it showed the same behaviour as before (i.e. the function in which the EI-call was placed could not be executed, and acrobat claimed there was no such function). It didn't work with my normal function, and not even with a simple console.println-statement that way. So in PDFs it definitely doesn't work like that.
    But thanks for the suggestion!

  • Japanese Characters working as URL parameters, turning to question marks when in URL string itself

    I'm having some trouble getting coldfusion to see japanese
    characters in the URL string.
    To clarify, if I have something like this:
    http://my.domain.com/index.cfm?categorylevel0=Search&categorylevel1=%E3%82%A2%E3%82%B8%E3% 82%A2%E3%83%BB%E3%83%93%E3%82%B8%E3%83%8D%E3%82%B9%E9%96%8B%E7%99%BA
    All of my code works correctly and the server is able to pass
    the japanese characters to the database and retrieve the correct
    data.
    If I have this instead:
    http://my.domain.com/index.cfm/Search/%E3%82%A2%E3%82%B8%E3%82%A2%E3%83%BB%E3%83%93%E3%82% B8%E3%83%8D%E3%82%B9%E9%96%8B%E7%99%BA
    My script (which works fine with English characters) parses
    CGI variables and converts these to the same URL parameters that I
    had in the first URL using a loop and a CFSET url.etc..
    In the first example, looking at the CF debug info shows me
    what I expect to see:
    URL Parameters:
    CATEGORYLEVEL0=Search
    CATEGORYLEVEL1=アジア・ビジネス開発
    In the second example it shows me this:
    URL Parameters:
    CATEGORYLEVEL0=Search
    CATEGORYLEVEL1=???·??????
    Can anyone suggest means for debugging this? I'm not sure if
    this is a CF problem, an IIS problem, a JRUN problem or something
    else altogether that causes it to lose the characters if they are
    in the URL string but NOT as a parameter.

    My suggestion was that you test with the
    first url, not the second. However, I can see a source of
    confusion. I overlooked your delimiter, "/". It should be "?" and
    "=" in this case. With these modifications, we get
    <cfif Len(cgi.query_string) neq 0>
    <cfset i = 1>
    <cfloop list="#cgi.query_string#" delimiters="&"
    index="currentcatname">
    <cfoutput>categorylevel#i# =
    #ListGetAt(currentcatname,2,"=")#</cfoutput><br>
    <cfset i = i + 1>
    </cfloop>
    If it is a failing of Coldfusion, the above test should fail,
    too.
    Now, an adaptation of the same test to your second url.
    <cfset url2 = "
    http://my.domain.com/index.cfm/Search/%E3%82%A2%E3%82%B8%E3%82%A2%E3%83%BB%E3%83%93%E3%82% B8%E3%83%8D%E3%82%B9%E9%96%8B%E7%99%BA">
    <cfset query_str =
    ListGetAt(replacenocase(url2,".cfm/","?"),2,"?")>
    <cfif Len(query_str) neq 0>
    <cfset i = 1>
    <cfloop list="#query_str#" delimiters="/"
    index="currentcatname">
    <cfoutput>categorylevel#i# =
    #currentcatname#</cfoutput><br>
    <cfset i = i + 1>
    </cfloop>
