Extracting secured content?

I know this might be a touchy question, but I thought I'd ask it anyhow. More fool I .
I recently needed to extract high-resolution images from a PDF document that was secured against Page Extraction. This was a public filing with a local municipality (so the information was unambiguously free) obtained from that municipality, but the company that filed the electronic version chose to secure it. There's no question in my mind that I should have had full access to the images. Furthermore, I was on a deadline, so attempting to get a better format from the original source was not viable.
What's the best approach here?
On a very short timeframe, I ended up blowing up the images on a very large screen and taking screenshots. Lame but adequate.
Looking a second time more recently, I see that if I open the PDF in Preview.app and choose Export as PDF, it removes those restrictions, and then I can extract the images using Acrobat Pro.
Is there a better way? I'm always way of using Preview in any kind of critical workflow.
One imagines I could print to Postscript from Acrobat Pro and then Distill. I don't know that this would be better, and I could imagine I'd have to fight to defeat security encoding in the Postscript, if memory is a proper guide.
I guess I could patch pdftk to help me remove passwords. I could use ghostscript to do so. I could use qpdf.
I dunno.
Tangent:
Another problem I ended up with was how to extract an image that was stitched together from two rectangular portions (top and bottom). It would have been nice to select the two with the Edit Object tool and hit Edit Image, but that doesn't work. I can get them both in Illustrator as seperate images but that's not helpful. I can Save as Image the whole page and crop it in Photoshop. But ultimately easiest seemed to extract the two images and recomposit them in Photoshop. Which just seemed wrong. Thoughts?

Dave: I certainly respect the forum moderators' preference to not discuss certain techniques, but your justification is incorrect
Sorry, but irrespective of the assumed status of the document, bypassing copyright protection measures is a breach of DMCA s1201.
That may be true, but the document in question is not copyrighted. It is in the public domain. As such, the Digital Millenium Copyright Act does not apply, and it is not a 17 USC 1201 circumvention. Indeed, §1201(a) is quite explicit:
(A) No person shall circumvent a technological measure that effectively controls access to a work protected under this title.
Public domain documents are not such works. And in this municipality, such documents are public domain.
In answer to your second question about image fragments, there is a Preflight fixup to detect and merge them.
Thanks.

How to extract the content of a mail message?
the message does not contain any attachments or images.

Message.getContent() does not return headers for a simple text/plain
message. If you're getting headers, something else is wrong.
Also, casting the result to String should work.
Most likely the message really isn't a simple text/plain message.
Provide more details and we'll help you figure out what you're

  • How to extract the content of a user uploaded txt file in web dynpro?

    Hi,
I'm working on a java web dynpro component. This component consists of document upload field, where users should be able to upload .txt documents. These uploaded text documents should then be somehow read, and thir content displayed. I am already able to upload documents using the upload field, and store it in the context, but I'm still not able to extract the content of these text documents for displaying.
Does anyone have any suggestions of how I could do this?
Any help will be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks!

    Hi Alain,
You can do through this document on how to upload/download files in Webdynpro.
Once you have the uploaded file in your context if you are storing it as a byte array then convert it to a string using the String constructor String(byte[] bytes)  and then you can store this string in an attribute of type String which could be bound to a UI element (TextArea) to display the contents.
If you are using an IWDResource then you will get an inputstream from which you can read the data and convert it to a string for display as mentioned above.
    Hope this helps.

Btw. Why do you need to do it. You do know that you can add jars to the classpath and read resources from them without extracting the file?

  • Remove 'Page Extraction' security restriction in PDF generated by ADS

    Hello Experts,
I am currently working on a SAP CRM project where we are using Adobe Document Services (ADS) to generate some PDF documents from SAP.
I have an issue with the Page Extraction security restriction associated to PDF generated by ADS.
This cause a problem to us since we are expecting the PDF to be processed by Streamserve later on. Streamserve is then 'converting' the PDF in its proprietary format (.lxf) and is preparing a Post Script file for our printing partner.
I have understood that Streamserve cannot processed our PDF because of the Page Extraction restriction (out from ADS, value is set to Not Allowed by default).
I have seen the following posts in SDN:
Page extraction property in PDF document  is set to 'not allowed'
    Document Restriction Interactive Form
I am then getting concerned since it does not look as straightforward as I would have expected.
--> Can anyone confirm if there is a way to set the Page Extraction restriction as Allowed?
Via ADS configuration? Via code? Via some work in SAP (SFP, output device config...)?
In the above SDN posts, I can read things about buying a policy server, using Adobe Acrobat Pro or Reader Extensions.
Does anyone have a clear cut?
    Thanks a lot.
    Brice.

    Hello,
I don´t know how to make this work. I would open the OSS message for this and want SAP to give a workaround or say clearly this cannot be done. Well... in one of the mentioned threads it is mentioned that SAP said this is the right behavior but there was not a word about if that can be changed.
    Otto
p.s.: probably it would be better for you to send only RAW data (i mean only XML data) and make the partner work with it. If the PDF is converted to "something" by a machine, then you don´t need PDF (what is a user GUI), to send only the data should suffice, or not?

  • Is there any addon (or somthing else) to SIMULATE ie9s "display only secure content"

i tried https everywhere and forcing with no script fruitlessly
since firefox does not display a detailed message, here is a screen shot from chrome: http://image.bayimg.com/baadpaaee.jpg
here the OFFICIAL answer from m$: "This message is telling you that there may be both secure and non-secure content on the page. Secure and non-secure content, or mixed content, means that a webpage is trying to display elements using BOTH secure (HTTPS/SSL) and non-secure (HTTP) web server connections. This OFTEN happens with online stores or financial sites that display IMAGES, banners, or scripts that are coming from a server that is not secured. The risk of displaying mixed content is that a non-secure webpage or script might be able to access information from the secure content."
certain thumbnails of close friend notifications and app requests NULLIFY the encryption and firefox doesnt padlock unlike chrome
so how to FILTER unencrypted info FROM the encrypted :)
"An attacker can replace any unprotected, unsecure HTTP content on an otherwise secure, HTTPS page with a “poisoned” version. For example, when you visit https://www.youtube.com with different browsers and a man-in-the-middle attacker present, you’ll see different results. Most other browsers just show the unprotected content automatically, allowing a spoofing or information disclosure attack"
    this pees me out :D

Hmm, well, many hours later, I have a Greasemonkey userscript that clears many insecure elements, but it doesn't work on scripts. By the time I edit or delete the script tag, Firefox has already requested the script. So I think it will take a real add-on.

  • Is it possible to extract the contents of any PDF file using Adobe PDF SDK?

Is it possible to extract the contents of any PDF file using Adobe PDF SDK?
For Example: There is one pdf file. Let us say xxx.pdf with 32 pages. I am interested in only in a topic present at 10th page. Can I extract this information and save it into another pdf file (means new pdf file)?

    Thanks Irosenth,
I am actually interested in extract the page and create a new PDF with that page. But still there is a catch that on which basis the page needs to extract either on PAGE number OR on Bookmark basis.
But here in this scenario assume I am looking for the PDF file, now I want to save only page 5. How can I extract page 5 automatically/programmatuically? Or in simple word how can I get the reference link of page 5?
Here I am not getting clear picture that Do I need both SDK Adobe & Acrobat to achieve this requirement. And more over you have mentioned that SDK itself is free. But on Adobe side it is mentioned that it is available by license only with this I have another doubt: To work my desktop/system application with Adobe PDF library, this library needs to distribute with the application. So in this case will it be chargeable for each and every deployment.
Could you please provide me the link from where I can download the SDK? So that I can do some excerise with SDK to figure out the exact flow of functionality to work with my application.

  • Accessing secured content area view from JPDK

Is it possible to access the secured content are views from JPDK?
For example if I am logged on as user USER1 in Portal, is it then possible to access WWSBR_ALL_ITEMS as USER1?

    hi,
You can access Content Area APIs from any user using JDBC calls. But, you may have to grant 'EXECUTE' privileges on those procedures (& SELECT privilege if its a DB object like Table, VIEW).
If you are using PL/SQL procedures in your application, you can directly access them through PL/SQL calls, otherwise you have to use JDBC.

  • Only Secure Content is diplayed message in IE 9

    Hi,
We are using windows 2008 R2 servers and Windows 7 Sp1 Enterprise clients.
The Windows 7 clients are using IE 9.0.25 256 bit.
On one of our external trusted websites we get "Only secure content is displayed" message. When we click on "Show all content", it then displays another message saying the "web browser needs to resend the information you've
previously submitted". It then has two boxes cancel or retry. If we select retry, it kicks us out of the website. So basically, I want to disable this message for the trusted sites zone, so that it displays mixed content by default.
I have followed the info from this previous post, although it is for ie 8:
    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/forums/windowsserver/en-US/cbdd4449-58b3-4154-9c8a-d4c72d0a89da/https-error-in-ie8
    Which says to amend the following group policy: Computer Configuration\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Internet Explorer\Internet Control Panel\Security Page\Internet Zone\Display mixed content\Enabled\Options\Enable
I have done this and confirmed it has taken the setting by looking at the IE trusted zone custom settings and also the web page is in the trusted sites zone , but I still get the message. Is there any other group policy that I can alter?
Is there a difference between ie8 and ie9 for this setting?
I have even tried adding this for the user config as well, but it still displays the message and it won't let us go any further into the purchasing system.
    Thanks
