F:convertNumber min/maxFractionDigits as EL not working

I've got some code wherre it appears that the f:convertNumber tag is igvnoring the minFractionDigits and maxFractionDigits:

<f:convertNumber minFractionDigits="#{contributedAmount.currency.defaultFractionDigits}"
maxFractionDigits="#{contributedAmount.currency.defaultFractionDigits}"/>
</h:inputText>
<h:outputText value="#{contributedAmount.currency.defaultFractionDigits}"/>When this runs, I get no fraction digits at all. In our backend, contributedAmount.amount returns a BigDecimal, and contributedAmount.currency reuturns a java.util.Currency. According to the API the minFractionDigits attribute can be an EL expression as long as it evaluates to a int - which Currency.getDefaultFractionDigits() returns.
When I change the convertNumber tag to have hardcoded minFractionDigits="2" and maxFractionDigits="2", it works fine. Is there some other rule about using EL to determine the value of the tag attributes that I'm not aware of?

I beleive it's 1.2_06. Is there a way to tell from the contents rather than the jar name? The env was created by someone else. Thanks.
