Faces/JSF vs Forms Application ?

Hi All,
I need to compare Forms based application with Faces/JSF based application, in term of performance.
(The fact of proprietary vs open standard is not the consideration)
Could any body please give comments on the points below :
1) Initial Load, Forms has heavy initial load, can I say that Faces/JSF has much lighter initial Load ?
2) Response Time, Faces/JSF has better response time than Formss ?
3) Bandwidth Requirement, Faces/JSF need less bandwidth than Forms ?
Thank you for your help,
xtanto

Its a pretty difficult question to answer since generally speaking they target different styles of application.
As a general observation - being a "thin" client - JSF will be faster in that there is no initial download like Forms has with the Forms JAR file. Forms will also load e JVM which takes time as well...
Response time is a difficult one as well since you tend, again, to have different expectation with the different UI technologies...
I guess what we really need to do is get to the bottom of why you asking the question; if you are about to make a development decision there may be other factors which weight more heavily.

  • Calling Java screens from Oracle Forms application

I am working with a client that has a large Oracle forms application. Since rewriting the entire application in Java is not an option at this time, the strategic direction is that any new modules that are to be created for the application are to be done in Java and called from the Forms menu. The decision as to what tool to use to develop the Java modules is still under debate. What is the best (most seamless) way to do this...calling a Java screen from a Forms application? If anyone has any experience in this, or can direct me to some literature on it, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

This is a web app in Forms/Reports 10g R2 running off Oracle AS and an Oracle db. The challenge for us is that the direction is that any new enhancements (screens) are to be built using Java (in either ADF Faces or Swing, another point for debate later) and then called from the Forms app. The business client is only paying for the enhancement. They don't care about moving off Forms to Java, so any extra work on the part of IT to do this, has to be fairly minimal and doable within the project budget. The movement to Java is an IT direction. Is there a way to do this without having to build a java framework for the entire Forms application (which I assume would take some time and involve retesting the entire app)?

  • Dynamic User Authentication in JSF, ADF BC Application

I have developed a JSF, ADF BC Application using JDeveloper 10.1.3.3. My application consists of jspx pages and I also have to integrate some existing oracle forms with it using OraFormsFaces library.
I have successfully used custom DBProcLogin Module by Frank to authenticate the users with the help of a stored procedure and user credentials stored in database tables.
During integrating Oracle Forms I realised that some of these oracle forms use get_application_property(username) to retreive connected user information. All of the users which are stored in database tables are also oracle users with the same credentials as stored in database tables. The existing oracle forms based application was connecting to Oracle every time with different provided user credentials each time and therefore returning correct (required) user name information.
Now since I have used DBProcLogin Module in new ADF application, when I run it, user is successfully authenticated but get_application_property(username) in the existing oracle forms returns the user name that application module is using to connect with the database. To make it work correctly, I want my ADF application to connect to oracle database with different user each time.
I have searched and seen topics such as, Dynamic JDBC Credentials, Database Proxy Users etc. But I am confused with the width and depth of this much information available. Therefore, I thought I may get some advice from the experts present in the forum that which of the techniques will go best with my application.
Keeping in view the scenario that I have provided, can someone please guide me to the best suitable technique and the related information/documentation?
    Thanks in advance,
    Amir

    Hi,
the whitepaper you reference is written by the expert on this subject. Samples are posted by the same author: http://radio.weblogs.com/0118231/stories/2004/09/23/notYetDocumentedAdfSampleApplications.html
Note that what you try to do will create a dedicated connection for Forms and ADF, which means that 100 users will have 200 database connections open.

  • Struts-faces & JSF commandLink bug in RI 1.1

    Hello,
There was a bug with JSF, multiple forms and commandLink as discussed in thread: http://forum.java.sun.com/thread.jsp?thread=526788&forum=427.
This bug is now fixed for JSF h:form form type.
I personnally use Struts and JSF with the struts-faces JAR and this issue is still not fixed when you create a form using the s:form tag, in fact as long as there is a s:form on the page the commandLinks do not work the same way as first reported for pure JSF apps.
Will this be fixed anytime soon in the struts-faces library? I hope so because I do need it.
    Thanks

  • Is it possible to Run a JSF 2.0 application under Websphere v7.0?

Has anyone succeeded in deploying and running a JSF 2.0 application under Websphere v7 ?
I was able to do this in 10 minutes using Eclipse 3.5 and Tomcat 6.0.
However, it seems tedious to do it under Websphere.
I would like to know if some of you have done it and how you did it.
    Thanks

Default Session Language :- American English
    Is the above correct ?
Do we need to perform any steps to so that we can see the responsibilites in english.Change the session language to Japanese and check then.

  • SSO protected Forms application fails with an OID error.

    Hello everyone,
I have a fresh install of Oracle Application Server 10.1.2 on RedHat Enterprise Linux 4. No patches were installed yet.
I've setup Forms to use the Single Sign-On server (SSO). Then created a user with a Resource Access Descriptor (RAD) in the Oracle Internet Directory (OID). I can successfully use the Forms application when I'm not using the SSO.
However, problems arise when I set the Forms application to use SSO. Once I get authenticated, the application.log files fills up with the following lines:
07/05/08 16:30:38 formsweb: In getUserId method: caught oracle.ldap.util.AccessDeniedException: General Error when performing search: getExtendedProperties [LDAP: error code 50 - Insufficient Access Rights]

While $ORACLE_HOME/ldap/log I see some new log files created which also contain erros. Such a log file is oidldapd01s3739.log and contains these lines:
    BEGIN
    2007/05/08:14:37:13 * ServerWorker (REG):7 * ConnID:194 * OpId:5235 * OpName:modify
    ERROR * gslsbzCheckDupAttrValinEntry : Normlztn failed for "cn=Logical Application Group, orclApplicationCommonName=formsApp_osielle.notarius.com_47F26490FB4311DB8F3BBF0DDB09B635, cn=forms, cn=Products, cn=OracleContext"
    END
I've RTFM a lot about this but I still can't find a way to fix this. I've found some info in Metalink Note 360341.1 "In Getuserid Method: Caught Error When Logging Into Forms With SSO Enabled". Unfortunately, my formsweb.cfg file is already setup as the workaround that it proposes, so that doesn't help.
It seems like the attribute "orclresourceviewers" does not get created when the RAD is generated? One of you (Sandeep I believe) suggested that it may have to do with a lack of an OID Index and that I should use catalog.sh to fix this. I unfortunately don't know how to proceed.
I've also opened a TAR, but Oracle Support doesn't seem to understand what's going on.
    Any ideas anyone?
    Many thanks,
    David

    Hi everyone,
Alright, I solved the problem. It seems like the OID is very very very picky with the formsweb.cfg syntax. Especially with the quotes: don't use them!
For example, I had set the oid_formsid & formsid_group_dn values between double-quotes. Removing them fixed the error.
Here's an RCS output from the modifications.

    ,dialog_type => null
    ,select_file => null
    3.
    filename := client_get_file_name ('','','','Select a file to Upload ',null,TRUE);
On using the above, I DO get a file open box. However, after browsing and selecting a file, I am getting the error message:
WUO-709 [OleFunctions.get_obj_property_args()] Unable to get Property: Open; Exception com.jacob.com.ComFailException: Can't map name to dispid: Open
I have checked the documentation on 'WUO-709' but cannot seem to figure out why it's not working.
Sorry for the lengthy description. Would greatly appreciate help on this.

I forgot to mention that in the modified code, I am supplying 'filename' as:
    filename := client_get_file_name ('','','','Select a file to Upload ',null,TRUE);
    args := Client_OLE2.CREATE_ARGLIST;
    Client_OLE2.add_arg(args, filename);

  • Forms application returns "ORA-01403 no data found" exception on Windows 7

    Hi everyone,
I am currently involved in an application compatibility project for an O/S migration from Windows XP to Windows 7.
We have a legacy Oracle Dev6i P18 Forms application that has been working perfectly on Windows XP for the last decade or so. When we installed the same application on Windows 7, it returned a pop-up error message with the text: "ORA-01403 no data found" when performing a certain operation (clicking on a Submit button in a specific form). The same operation works successfully on Windows XP displaying the message "Submit has been successful".
This error is well documented and the solution involves adding an exception handler to the faulting SQL statement(s) in order to handle the ORA-01403 exception. Unfortunately, the application is composed of compiled forms (.FMX) and we no longer have the source code so I can't implement this solution.
I ran a file comparison utility (WinDiff from the Windows SDK) and confirmed that all the files in the application folder and the Oracle Dev6i P18 folder are identical on both the Windows XP and Windows 7 systems.
I enabled tracing in SQLNet.ORA by configuring TRACE_LEVEL_CLIENT=SUPPORT (I know, too verbose) and other related settings on both systems and have uploaded the traces to my SkyDrive for public viewing:
    http://sdrv.ms/10BNYtI
The traces show that the "ORA-01403" exception occurs many times on both Windows XP and Windows 7 systems as a result of various SQL statements being executed, for instance:
    SELECT TASK_ID,TASK_DETAIL_STATUS,ASSIGNED_DATE FROM TASK_DETAILS WHERE TASK_ID = :b1 AND TASK_DETAIL_STATUS = (SELECT ID FROM V_TASK_STATUS WHERE ABBREVIATION = 'PLANNED' ) FOR UPDATE OF TASK_DETAIL_STATUS,ASSIGNED_DATE
    UPDATE TASK_DETAILS SET ASSIGNED_DATE=NTMS_UTIL.GET_SERVER_DATE,TASK_DETAIL_STATUS=(SELECT ID FROM V_TASK_STATUS WHERE ABBREVIATION = 'ASSIGNED' ) WHERE ROWID = :b1
    ORA-01403: no data found.
So the same error happens on both Windows XP and Windows 7.
On Windows XP, the error is somehow handled, and does not cause the "Submit" operation to fail.
On Windows 7, however, the error bubbles to the surface and is displayed to the user, thus halting the "Submit" operation.

Thank you. I'm well aware that adding an exception handler is the classic solution to the ORA-01403 error. However, like I mentioned in my original post, I don't have the source code. All I have are the compiled .FMX forms so I can't implement such a solution:

i trying using host command on local/client application .. and it is working ...
but when i try on server application (EBS - UNIX) it does not working ...
    thanks ..

Are you using Forms 6i in client/server mode or web deployed? I'm not sure what you mean by 'try on server application"
Remember that when using a web deployed architecture, a host command will execute the command on the Forms application server, NOT on the client.
To execute host commands on the client you would have to use WebUtil, but that's not available for Forms 6i. Perhaps there are PJC's out there that can do it for you, but I don't want to get in all those details without me knowing if it is relevant for you.

  • Deploying forms application on Oracle Application Server 10g on Solaris

    Hi Guys,
We have to deploy our forms application on Application Server 10g on Solaris platform.
I understand we have to specify the hosting directory in the formsweb.cfg file from where forms will be picked up.
    Now the query is -
We have a directory structure, we want to keep the directory structure intact as every directory contains forms and reports executables belonging to that module.
So can I mention the parent directory structure as launching directory and still the forms will be picked and hosted as web forms when user tries to access the form via a link, the forms executables being in inidividual directories inside the parent directory?
    - Hosting Directory (formsweb.cfg entry)
      - Sub Directory1
          - Form1
          - Form2
      - Sub Directory2
          - Form3
          - Form4
      - Sub Directory3
          - Form5
          - Form6I hope I am able to put my query across in accurate way.
    Thanks!
    Av.

    Hi FormsEleven,
When you say you can do this or you have done for demo then considering following directory structure if I have two forms having common form names how it will be resolved?
Or how the url to access these forms will be?
As shown in the following structure consider we have Form1 in sub directory1 as well as in sub-directory2 then how the link to access these forms will be?
    - Hosting Directory (formsweb.cfg entry)
      - Sub Directory1
          - Form1
          - Form2
      - Sub Directory2
          - Form1
          - Form4
      - Sub Directory3
          - Form5
          - Form6

  • Help with httpd.conf redirect to our Forms Application

Hello. We are running Oracle Application Server 10g Release 2 (10.1.2) Forms & Reports services on a Windows 2003 x64 server. I'm having a difficult time trying to get the default Oracle iAS homepage to redirect to our forms application installed on the same server. For example, we access our server homepage at http://db1. We access our forms app at http://db1/forms/frmservlet?form=C:\forms\execs\app.fmx. In httpd.conf I've tried the following:
    1. Redirect / http://db1/forms/frmservlet?form=C:\forms\execs\app.fmx
When accessing http://db1, the following error is returned:
FRM-92130: Registry is either missing, or contains invalid, entry for Dispatcher...
The error returned in Internet Explorer 7 is:
    java.lang.ClassFormatError: oracle/forms/engine/Main (Bad magic number)
This also breaks the form URL.
    2. I also tried this at the end of httpd.conf:
    RewriteEngine On
    RewriteRule ^/(.*)$ http://db1/forms/frmservlet?form=C:\forms\execs\app.fmx
When accessing http://db1, the server appears to be stuck in a loop. I think the problem is that the redirect is happening on all occurrences that contain "db1". So then a user enters http://db1, the redirection happens. But after the redirection, the new URL contains "db1" and the redirection happens again and keeps looping.
Any help resolving this issue is greatly appreciated.
    -Al

    Summary:
I fixed the "Bad magic number" error by modifying the client's JInitiator configuration to not use Browser Settings for Proxies.
    Issue:
JInitiator running in Internet Explorer displays the following error: "java.lang.ClassFormatError: oracle/forms/engine/Main (Bad magic number)”
    Details:
In my case, only external users connecting via a Proxy Server were having this issue.
    Solution:
    •     Open "JInitiator Control Panel":
    Start --> Settings --> Control Panel --> JInitiator 1.3.1.22
    •     Open [Proxies] tab; Uncheck the “Use Browser Settings” checkbox.
